elcome to Madrid, the
world capital of dentistry
for the next four days. We
have been very excited about the
prospect of holding this groundbreaking event in Spain since we first
announced it at last year’s World
Dental Congress in Poznán in Poland.

delivering a truly exceptional choice
of lectures in every field of modern
dentistry. This year’s World Oral Health
Forum and Forum of the FDI Science
Committee focus respectively on
global periodontal health and antimicrobial resistance. Both events are
open to all congress participants.

The theme of “Bringing the world
together to improve oral health” is especially relevant. It reflects what the
FDI World Dental Federation has been
doing since 1900, when it held its first
international event to sort and simplify the complicated laws and customs governing world dentistry in order to move the profession forward.

Those interested in the latest technologies, equipment, material and oral
hygiene products will find them on display at the nearly 5,000 m2 dental exhibition, featuring well over 200 booths
of national and international manufacturers and suppliers. It is worthwhile to
remember that products compliant
with national standards and regulations in Spain are compliant throughout the European Union, the world’s
largest market for dental products, services and procedures, with over 500
million customers.

The FDI serves as the official representative body of more than one million dentists worldwide, through more
than 200 national member associations and specialist groups in some
130 countries. For more than 100
years, the World Dental Congress has
been the FDI’s flagship event to promote the exchange of knowledge and
experience, challenge preconceived
ideas and widen perceptions.
In 2017, we can boast a scientific
programme featuring 130 world-famous experts from over 30 countries,

There are six national pavilions: Brazil, the People’s Republic of China, India, the Republic of Korea, the UK and
the US. Also, naturally, I encourage you
to visit the FDI pavilion to find out
more about our World Oral Health Day
2018 campaign, being launched here
in Madrid, and gain special insights
into the FDI’s work and the latest news
about our projects worldwide.

I sincerely hope that congress participants will have the opportunity to
visit regions of Madrid and of Spain,
which is one of the world’s prime tourist destinations owing to its rich and
varied cultural and natural heritage
and architectural splendours, not forgetting some of the world’s best
beaches. For those who have not already registered, on-site registration is
still open.

mundo. Para aquellos que aún no se
han inscrito, la inscripción en el centro
de convenciones ya está abierta.

lighting the importance of the twoway relationship between oral health
and general health.

What is the international role of dentistry?
The profession is governed by the
national regulations established by
each country; however, all dental professionals have a common goal: to ensure good oral health for all our patients based on strictly medical criteria. I am referring first to prevention,
but also to treatment, that is making
an adequate diagnosis and following
up with the most appropriate medical
and therapeutic treatment in each
case. Our role in society is to guarantee the oral health of the population,
and we should not lose sight of this.

What makes Madrid so popular for
event organisers and participants?
Madrid is a spectacular city, and an
ideal place to organise a congress of
this kind. This is mainly due to its location in the heart of Europe, its pleasant climate, cosmopolitan image,
beauty and history. In addition, it is a
modern and safe capital that is well
connected and offers many possibilities for tourism: enjoying the famous
Spanish tapas downtown, walking
and exploring its streets, monuments
and museums, or attending one of
the great sporting events, such as a
Real Madrid or Atlético football
match. The options for experiencing
Madrid are endless, but we will additionally be offering a social programme that will meet the expectations of all attendees. We have all the
ingredients to make the congress a
success, so I encourage all dentists
and clinic staff to come to Madrid.

What are recent advances?
The importance of common risk
factors and a comprehensive approach to non-communicable diseases. Owing to this, several events are
planned for the scientific programme
of the congress that will address the

relationship between oral health and
general health. As the slogan for the
FDI’s World Oral Health Day 2016 said,
“Healthy mouth. Healthy body.”, there
is an undeniable relationship between
oral health and general health, and it
is our role to convey to the community
that good oral health is very important to help prevent other pathologies
that affect other parts of the body.
What are the challenges in dentistry,
oral health and public health?
The greatest challenge we face is
being able to incorporate dentistry as
a full right in the Spanish public health
sector so that the oral health of citizens is seen in a comprehensive way
and with the participation of all health
sectors. Only in this way can we universalise oral health, which is one of
our objectives as health professionals.

a criterios estrictamente médicos.
No
se arrepentirán.

committees, national dental associations and other organisations.
This year’s crop includes six new

Many FDI policy statements are the
result of projects carried out by the
FDI Science Committee, Dental Practice Committee and Public Health
Committee, sometimes in collaboration with entities such as the World
Health Organization.
“The science of dentistry is continually evolving and FDI policy statements should always reflect the latest
thinking based on the latest research
and development,” said Science Committee Chair Dr Harry-Sam Selikowitz,
from Norway. “Developing new texts
to address new issues and keeping
current texts up to date is one of the
pillars of our committee work.”
“Policy statements are one of the
FDI’s greatest contributions to world
dentistry and have a practical role to
play in supporting national regulations in many parts of the world,”
added Dental Practice Committee
Chair Dr Michael Sereny, from Germany. “Dentists are practical people
and need practical advice—and this is
what we are providing in our policy
statements.”
“FDI’s role has always been to
share knowledge and experience
among members of the dental community to support and advocate the
development of effective national
public oral health policies,” said Public
Health Committee Chair Jo Frencken,
from the Netherlands. “Policy statements evolve from debate among
dentists from around the world and
thus constitute an international consensus.”

servicios de salud oral y a obtener
mayor prioridad para la salud oral en
la agenda nacional e internacional de
salud.

The OHO is a new tool designed
by the FDI to measure perceptions
and realities in dental practices. It
was first piloted two years ago in Germany, Mexico and the Netherlands.
Owing to its great success, it is being
rolled out in ten countries as part of
an official FDI research programme,
being carried out by national dental
associations and involving between
20 and 70 dental practices per
country.
The results of the research will contribute to advocacy for better oral
health services and giving higher priority to oral health on the national and
international health agendas. In addition, participating dental practices will
receive regular updates on the oral
health and dental visiting trends of
their patients.
The updates include graphs and
statistics on how patients rate their
oral health, why they do not visit the
dentist more often, and the interac-

Clínica Vilaboa in Spain: “Prophylaxis is
the main way that conditions like
peri-implantitis can be prevented”
Entrevista: “La profilaxis es la
mejor manera para prevenir muchas
enfermedades como la periimplantitis”

T

raditionally, becoming a dentist
in Spain was a lengthy process.
Students used to be required to
first obtain a qualification in medicine
before they could even undergo dental training. Since 1986, however,
these restrictions have been eased,
and dentists are now able to practise
with a European Union-recognised
degree in dentistry. As a result, the
country is now home to around 35,000
dentists and over 14,000 dental hy-

Beatriz Vilaboa: Education is
something that we like to do with time
and care. We take the time to explain to
our patients what the best toothbrush
and interdental brush are for them to
use. We provide them with the best
possible tools for them to achieve oral
health.
José Manuel Reuss: We understand now that we have to work with
patients as a team. We can no longer

them. We have specific interdental
brushes for implant restorations and
different-sized interdental brushes to
maintain gingival health even in areas
difficult to access.
We also now know that a good
toothbrush with soft bristles is the best
tool for achieving long-term success for
implants. A toothbrush that does not
harm the teeth or the soft tissue and

that is easy to use is the best tool for lifelong oral health.
Débora Reuss: When a patient
leaves our office, he or she has three
tools: a toothbrush, good interdental
brushes and, of course, dental floss.
These help the patient to maintain
good oral health and thereby avoid the
development of conditions like gingivitis and periodontitis.

What do you think about CURAPROX
products?
José Manuel Reuss: Products that
are easy to use help us progress in our
treatments quicker and provide patients with the tools to easily establish a
positive home care dental regimen.
CURAPROX’s products are often gentler
than other products, and this meant
that it went against the general trend of
the market for the past few years. HowAD

gienists, almost all of whom operate
as private practitioners owing to
Spain’s low level of public-funded oral
healthcare.
Located in the Salamanca district of
Madrid, Spain’s capital, Clínica Vilaboa
was founded more than 30 years ago
by Drs Beatriz and Débora Vilaboa.
With polished hardwood floors and a
stylishly minimalist interior, the practice’s aesthetic emphasis is immediately evident. A pioneer in aesthetic
dentistry when first established, the
multilingual clinic has since expanded
its focus to include endodontics, oral
surgery and all kinds of restorative
dentistry. World Dental Daily spoke
with the practice owners, as well as
practice dentists Drs Débora and José
Manuel Reuss, about the clinic’s approach to prevention and the general
state of the Spanish dental industry.
World Dental Daily: How do you educate your patients and talk to them
about oral hygiene?
Débora Vilaboa: I spend more time
today talking about hygiene and attitude with my patients than explaining
what procedure I will be performing.
That is something that the patients
value and are very receptive to, and it
provides many benefits to them. It also
helps to establish a long-term relationship that is built on trust and understanding, one that is more health-oriented than tooth-focused.

simply provide treatment. We have to
spend extra time educating them, motivating them on how they can maintain and preserve their oral health,
which is ultimately their responsibility.
What is the state of dental health in
Spain? How good is your patients’ oral
hygiene? Have you seen an increase in
caries or periodontal disease among
your patients?
Beatriz Vilaboa: In our office, we
are seeing much better oral health—a
decrease in caries and periodontal disease, which is very good news. This has
not just come out of the blue, though. It
is a result of continued education, year
after year, by dentists and hygienists
alike.
Débora Vilaboa: Our goal is to
have a positive impact on a patient’s life
and health. When the patient realises
the power that lies in his or her own
hands, he or she is often very willing to
use it. It is simply that we have often underestimated the effectiveness of educating our patients, of empowering
them. Doing so pays off in the long
term.
What oral healthcare products do you
usually recommend for home care?
José Manuel Reuss: Nowadays, we
have tools that are much more suitable
for specific requirements—instruments
that patients find easy to handle and
use, which is essential for motivating

About OHO
OHO uses a mobile App to collect data in dental practices
and develop knowledge on oral health and dental care
worldwide. It will be used to advocate for improved oral
health services and greater attention for oral health.
Participating dentists get regular updates on oral health
and dental visiting trends of their patients and those of their
country. These include graphs and statistics of key findings:
• How do patients rate their oral health?
• Why don't patients visit dental practices more often?
• What are the interactions between dental visits, oral
health status, behaviours, quality of life, etc.?

ever, this softness is extremely beneficial, as it helps to prevent damage to tissue and teeth.

T

país acoge actualmente a unos 35.000

World Dental Daily: ¿Cómo educas a
tus pacientes?

¿Has
observado un aumento de caries y de
enfermedades periodontales entre tus
pacientes?
dental. Si no consiguen mantener una
buena salud bucal, pueden desarrollar
enfermedades como gingivitis y periodontitis.
¿Qué opinas de los productos
CURAPROX?
nuestros tratamientos y proporciona a
