FDI to break records in Istanbul
| World Dental Congress 2024 featuring over 277 key speakers in ten parallel session halls.

A

pivotal event in the dental
industry calendar, the FDI
World Dental Congress is
poised to make a triumphant return
to Istanbul in Türkiye from 12 to
15 September. This year’s congress
(FDIWDC24) will be held at two venues:
the Istanbul Congress Center (ICC)
and the Istanbul Lütfi Kırdar Inter
national Convention and Exhibition
Centre (ICEC). These venues are con
veniently connected within Istanbul’s
“congress valley”, offering a unique
backdrop for four days of learning,
networking and innovation.
This year’s theme, “Bridging
Innovation and Perfection”, aptly

captures the congress’s mission to
advance the science and practice of
dentistry. This flagship event of FDI
promises to strengthen ties and
foster collaboration within the global
oral health community. Co-hosted
with the Turkish Dental Association,
FDIWDC24 will once again transform
Istanbul into a hub of dental excel
lence, having last hosted the event
in 2013. That congress brought
together over 16,000 participants,
including exhibition visitors and more
than 7,000 registrants for the scien
tific programme to discuss crucial
oral and public health issues.

Promoting knowledge
and expertise
FDIWDC24 promises to be a
landmark event, featuring over
150 sessions and offering a remarkable
144 continuing education credits.
Dental professionals will have the
opportunity to learn from leading
experts and stay abreast of the latest
technologies and advancements in
dentistry. The event’s comprehen
sive four-day scientific programme
will be presented in parallel sessions across several halls, allowing
attendees to immerse themselves

trends in dentistry.

Key topics include:
• multidisciplinary treatment approaches;
• c linical dilemmas and decision-making;
•o
 vercoming of failures and risk
assessment;
• measuring of success in dental
practice;
• anterior aesthetics and managing
of complications; and
• the impact of artificial intelligence
(AI) on the future of dentistry.
The meticulously crafted pro
gramme includes international
and local tracks, FDI-led sessions,
meet-the-expert events and hands-on

courses. There will also be a dedi
cated track for members of the
dental team, featuring abstract

presentations through e-posters

and free communications. [See the

Highlighting digital
innovations and young voices
A key highlight of this year’s
congress is a symposium hosted by
the Digital Dentistry Society, focusing
on the transformative effects of digital
technologies on implant dentistry
and other areas of prosthodontics.
Spearheaded by well-known experts
Prof. Simona Tecco and Drs Henriette
Lerner, Francesco Mangano, Carlo

Mangano and Giuseppe Luongo,
the session promises a timely explo
ration of innovations shaping the
profession’s future.
In addition, the Young Dentists
Forum offers a dynamic platform
for emerging voices in dentistry.
Dr Miguel Stanley will lead a 3-hour
session titled “Leadership in dentistry:
Mindset for success”, intended for
young dental professionals and
students. The two-day programme
also includes a question-and-answer
session, providing an unparalleled
opportunity for young dentists, students
and industry representatives to
engage in meaningful dialogue and
exchange ideas. [Read more about the

Revolutionising
dentistry with AI
A pivotal FDI-led session on AI in
dentistry will offer a comprehensive
overview of AI applications within the
field. Attendees will be introduced to
AI-driven precision dentistry and the
latest AI solutions tailored for dental
practices. The session will delve into AI
technologies in dental image analysis,
evaluating their capabilities, strengths
and limitations. It will also explore the
impact of natural language processing,
exemplified by large language models
such as ChatGPT, on dental education,
addressing ensuing educational, social
and ethical challenges. Esteemed experts
Prof. Falk Schwendicke, Prof. Reinhilde
Jacobs and Dr Sergio E. Uribe will lead
this insightful session.

Showcasing
the latest industry trends
The congress will host a vast dental
exhibition across the ICC and ICEC ven
ues, featuring about 150 exhibitors who
have confirmed their attendance. This
exhibition promises to be a melting pot
of innovation, showcasing the latest
advancements and trends in dental tech
nology and practice. Attendees will have
the opportunity to interact with indus
try leaders and explore state-of-the-art
products and solutions.

and “not for profit” or “formal”

and “informal”. The private sector for oral healthcare includes
all private actors within the
oral healthcare workforce (e.g.
general dentists, periodontists,
hygienists), pharmaceutical and
medical product manufacturers,
educational and training insti
tutions, oral health institutions
and donors.
Partnerships for health, especially between actors in the public and private health sectors,
can raise the visibility of an
unmet need, enhance coordination, facilitate funds and other
resources for low-resource settings and provide platforms for
increased impact. Unfortunately,
although recent policy initiatives
recognise the importance of
private sector involvement in
the global oral health agenda,
a comprehensive understanding
of its role has been lacking.
FDI has taken concrete steps to
address this gap.

In March 2023, FDI published a
report to highlight how industry
actors can effectively help accelerate the delivery of optimal oral
health for all, especially by engaging in multi-stakeholder collaborations. The report was developed
through a consultative process
involving representatives of industry, WHO, academia and civil
society under the guidance of
FDI’s Vision 2030 Implementation
and Monitoring Expert Group. It is
available in English, French and
Spanish.
Partnerships for oral health
will also be at the centre of some
discussions at FDIWDC24. Under
the theme “Partnerships and
alliances to bridge the oral
healthcare gap”, the 2024 World
Oral Health Forum will bring
together speakers representing
governments, national dental
associations, WHO, the health
workforce and other industry
actors to discuss the strengths

of the different actors in the oral
healthcare system and how they
can be leveraged to achieve
optimal oral health for all. Join
FDI President Dr Greg Chadwick
and other distinguished speakers for the forum on Saturday,
14 September, from 9:00 to 11:00.
The session will take place in the
Hisar hall on the Rumeli mezzanine
floor of ICEC.
Similarly, FDI has joined forces
with fellow member organisations
of the World Health Professions
Alliance in organising a session
on interprofessional collaboration. The speakers, representing
the world’s dentists, doctors,
pharmacists,   physiotherapists
and industry, will discuss the importance of collaborating across
health disciplines. “Reforming
health systems through inter
professional collaboration” will take
place on Saturday, 14 September,
from 11:30 to 12:30 in the
Hisar hall.

A world with optimal oral health
| Integrating oral health into universal health coverage.

I

Poor oral health can lead to
systemic conditions such as
cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and systemic health issues
can worsen oral conditions. This
interconnectedness highlights
the need for comprehensive
care to improve patient outcomes.
FDI’s Vision 2030 and WHO’s
oral health strategy are providing
crucial guidance to policymakers
globally. These initiatives aim to
alleviate the global burden of
oral disease by emphasising prevention and ensuring universal
access to oral health services.

n recent years, oral health has
gained significant momentum
within the global health
agenda, highlighted by the World
Health Organization’s (WHO’s)
Global Strategy and Action Plan
on Oral Health 2023–2030. This
recognition reflects a growing
understanding that oral health
is integral to overall well-being.
FDI’s Vision 2030 aligns with these
developments, emphasising the
need for integration.

Integrating oral healthcare into
general healthcare is essential for
improving access to dental services, enhancing cost-effectiveness
and achieving better patient outcomes. As global health organisations advocate for this integration,
it is important for policymakers and
health professionals to collaborate
to ensure better health for all.
We cordially invite you to
attend the following sessions at
FDIWDC24:

Additionally, they advocate for
the integration of oral healthcare
into primary healthcare systems.
Implementing integrated measures is critical to achieving
universal health coverage and
ensuring that all people can
access essential healthcare services without facing financial
hardship.

Over the years, FDI has
launched numerous initiatives to
support its Vision 2030, such as
the Whole Mouth Health, Whole
Body Health and Educational
Module for Other Healthcare
Professionals projects. More information is available on the
FDI website at fdiworlddental.org/
projects.

At FDIWDC24, a range of
sessions will focus on integrated
care, interprofessional collab
oration and universal health
coverage. Attendees are invited
to take part in these sessions
to learn how health profes
sionals can advance the vision
of a world with optimal oral
health.

interview

“FDI’s Oral Health Observatory project
came at a crucial time for Lebanon”
| An interview with Dr Dany Daou.
Iveta Ramonaite, Dental Tribune International

Dr Daou, what challenges does
Lebanon face regarding access to
oral healthcare and its utilisation
in the country?
Lebanon is grappling with multi
ple crises spanning politics, security
and economics, which have an im
pact on various industries, including
the oral and general health indus
tries. Since the Beirut explosion in
2020, financial constraints have be
come the primary barrier to access
ing dental care. It is important to
note that Lebanon does not face
a shortage of dentists. However,
the high cost of dental treatment
relative to the population’s fi
nancial status remains the main
obstacle to dental care and is

part of overall well-being. Time con
straints also play a role, and patients
place considerable importance on
the ethical standards and personal
qualities of their dentists.

| Dr Dany Daou is a faculty member
and the coordinator of the master’s
programme in dental public health
in the Faculty of D
 ental Medicine at
the Lebanese University in Beirut.
c oupled with a lack of social health
insurance coverage.
Recent studies have highlighted
additional factors, beyond financial
constraints, that contribute to the
non-utilisation of dental care. These
factors include human elements
and personal preferences. A signifi
cant portion of the population lack
sufficient education on oral health,
leading many to underestimate the
necessity of regular dental visits and
the importance of oral health as

Lebanon is one of 12 countries
participating in FDI’s OHO project
to collect standardised data on
oral health. Could you share some
insights about the project and its
outcomes in Lebanon?
FDI’s OHO project came at a cru
cial time for Lebanon. It was initiated
in 2019 in Lebanon, and we com
pleted data collection in early 2020,
just as the crisis began. The signi
ficance of this project lies in its
provision of previously unavailable
data on Lebanon’s oral health status.
Although practice-based, the data
serves as an excellent interim mea
sure until a comprehensive national
survey can be conducted. It offers
a solid foundation for developing
strategies and actions that are geared
towards multilevel and community-
level interventions. Additionally, this
data is a valuable resource for advocacy
efforts in Lebanon.
The project involved 26 dentists
from five administrative provinces
who recruited around 800 patients.
The results covered several areas:

patient-reported oral and general
health, patient-reported oral health-
related behaviour and dentist-
reported patient oral health status.
The data found that one-third of
patients felt that their oral health
issues had a negative impact on

their overall life satisfaction. It also
disclosed that nearly 38% of patients
consumed foods and drinks high
in sugar daily. According to data
gained from dental professionals,
there was an average of four carious
teeth per patient, and 41% of patients
had gingivitis.
The results of this OHO study,
which was conducted by FDI in col
laboration with the Lebanese Dental
Association, were alarming and shed
light on the poor oral health pre
valent among the Lebanese. Given
the deteriorating economic situation
in Lebanon, it is expected that the
current circumstances are now sig
nificantly worse. Therefore, there is
an urgent need to implement a new
strategy to combat this disease and
improve oral health in Lebanon.
What plans are in place to improve
oral health in Lebanon?
Unfortunately, amid the multi
tude of challenges Lebanon is fac
ing, oral health does not rank high

on the political agenda. To address
this issue, it is essential to launch
new initiatives.
One such initiative involves
a collaborative effort between a
dedicated team and FDI to develop
a new strategy for Lebanon that
aligns with FDI’s Vision 2030 and the
World Health Organization’s oral
health strategy. It aims to unify all
segmented efforts, creating a com
prehensive and effective plan to
improve oral health in the country.
Grounded in OHO data, the strategy
will serve as a powerful tool for oral
health advocacy.
Meanwhile, some initiatives are
bridging the gap, particularly those
led by the Lebanese Dental Asso
ciation and the dental public health
departments at dental faculties in
Lebanon. These efforts are crucial
for maintaining and improving
oral health standards until the new
comprehensive strategy can be fully
implemented.

Editorial note: A sessions about the
Oral Health Observatory project will take
place on Friday, 13 September, from
09:00 to 10:00. The session will take place
in the Hamidiye hall on the B2 floor of ICC.

“The oral health needs of older adults have
changed considerably in the last years”
| An interview with Prof. Gerry McKenna.
Iveta Ramonaite, Dental Tribune International

P

rof. Gerry McKenna is a faculty
member in the School of Medi
cine, Dentistry and Biomedical
Sciences at Queen’s University Belfast,
where he leads oral health services
research and geriatric dentistry
within the Centre for Public Health.
In this interview, he sheds light on
the evolving oral health needs and
treatment expectations of older adults
and discusses the importance of tai
loring dental services for the growing
ageing population. He also highlights
several initiatives aimed at addressing
the unique oral health challenges of
older adults.
Prof. McKenna, why is it crucial for
dental services to be adapted to
meet the needs of older people?
The oral health needs of older
adults have changed considerably in
the last years. Instead of the traditional
picture of older adults with no re
maining natural teeth and complete
replacement dentures, we now have a
partially dentate older population.
It is also notable that the treat
ment expectations of older adults

have changed considerably, and
they now expect conservative
forms of dentistry to ensure that
they retain their natural teeth,
ideally for the rest of their lives.
While it is very positive that older
adults are preserving more and
more natural teeth, we need to
understand that looking after
natural teeth in this population
is challenging. We know that, as
people get older, they are more
likely to develop chronic dental
disease, including periodontal dis
ease, tooth wear and, most com
monly, dental caries, particularly
on root surfaces. It is therefore
essential for dental services to pro
vide effective prevention for older
adults that will help prevent these
dental diseases and ensure that
natural teeth remain functional for
as long as possible.
How does the Oral Health for an
Ageing Population (OHAP) project
assist older individuals in achieving
healthy longevity?
The OHAP project is dedicated
to developing resources to help

older adults achieve good oral
health. We understand that older
adults are a heterogeneous group
with different needs. The project
has developed a series of guides
and information leaflets for oral
healthcare professionals, carers and
patients to provide them with
practical advice on how to maintain
and prevent dental disease in older
adults. We truly hope that these
resources will prove helpful in pre
venting dental disease.
What plans does the OHAP project
have to address future needs and
trends in the oral health of ageing
populations?
The OHAP project has devel
oped numerous resources, and
we are now actively considering
the best medium to share these
with oral healthcare professionals,
carers and patients themselves.
We want to ensure that they are
readily available and accessible,
and it seems that having them on
line might be more effective than
distributing paper-based informa
tion guides. We also want to ensure

The session will present the
project’s progress to date. We will
give an overview of the importance
of good oral health for older adults
and share some of the resources that
we have developed. These include
the FDI Frailty Guide for dentists and
other healthcare professionals to
assess older adults’ level of oral frailty.
This guide enables practitioners to
determine the patient’s dependency
level and risk of oral frailty, followed
by targeted prevention advice.

will be presenting the progress
on FDI’s Oral Health for an

developed.

We will also provide details on

outlines regular oral function exer
cises for older adults. These exercises
are designed to help maintain oral
health and prevent signs of oral func
tional decline. I hope that attendees
will find this session informative.

BeautiBond Xtreme by SHOFU: Etch, prime and bond in one step
Minimum film thickness,
maximum aesthetics
Owing to its special viscosity, BeautiBond Xtreme adapts
very well to surfaces and can be
applied economically and precisely. The adhesive film is only
about 5  μm thick, making this
adhesive with no filler and no
HEMA formulation the system
of choice, particularly for minimally invasive dentistry. Even in
cavities that are small, shallow
or close to the gingiva, it leaves
enough space for highly aesthetic
restorations that are reliably
bonded and indiscernible in the
visible zone.

| The trend in the development
of adhesive systems is towards
increased bond strength and
simplified clinical use. In pursuit
of these goals, SHOFU developed
BeautiBond Xtreme, a powerful
light-curing, self-etch all-in-one
universal adhesive for bonding
direct and indirect restorations.
A truly multitalented adhesive
When reliable bonding is
needed, BeautiBond Xtreme
will play to its strengths. An
innovative acid-resistant silane
coupling agent makes the
chemical composition highly
stable—and the product requires no additional primer.
This chemistry reliably bonds
a wide variety of restorative
materials—composites, precious
and non-precious alloys, glass-
ceramics, alumina and zirconia—
to enamel and dentine. Whether
dentine surfaces are wet or
dry, BeautiBond Xtreme bonds
equally well under both con
ditions.
Besides bonding direct and
indirect restorations made of
light-cured composites, BeautiBond

Xtreme can be used to repair
fractured restorations and seal
tooth preparations, for example.
For all etching techniques
BeautiBond Xtreme adapts
to users’ needs. Irrespective of
whether they are using a self-
etching, total-etching or selective-
etching technique, BeautiBond
Xtreme provides a dependable
bond.

BeautiBond Xtreme is designed to etch, prime and bond
quickly and reliably in one step,
making it an effective and durable alternative to multi-bottle
a dhesive systems.
Inconvenient work steps,
such as shaking or mixing and
repeated application, have been
eliminated to facilitate fast and
dependable bonding.

Storable without refrigeration
BeautiBond Xtreme does
not require special storage. The
adhesive is stable and can be
stored at temperatures between
1  °C and 25  °C without degradation. It does not have to warm
up to room temperature before use and can be used
immediately.
New ergonomic bottle design
The dispensing bottle has
been improved in terms of ergo-

nomics to allow opening, dispensing and closing with just
one hand. The special nozzle
design with smooth surfaces
and edges has been matched to
the viscosity of the material to
deliver very small drops. A 5  ml
bottle provides approximately
260 drops. This ensures economical dispensing and only minimal
loss of material.
BeautiBond Xtreme
and B
 EAUTIFIL,
an unbeatable team
BeautiBond Xtreme can be
ideally combined with the
proven direct composite restorative products of the BEAUTIFIL
family. Whether used with the
injectable BEAUTIFIL Flow Plus X,
the low-shrinkage, paste-like
BEAUTIFIL II LS or the bulk-fill
system BEAUTIFIL-Bulk, BeautiBond
Xtreme reliably bonds the
restorations to the tooth structure.

“Prevention is often under-represented
at dental shows”
| An interview with Curaden’s Dr Ana Bokuchava on transforming oral health.

D

r Ana Bokuchava is a dentist and the international
marketing manager for
Swiss prevention pioneer Curaden.
In this interview, she shares the
company’s vision on advancing
oral health at FDIWDC24 and
how prioritising prevention remains a challenge in modern
dentistry.

Dr Ana Bokuchava, is it still
a challenge to grab people’s
attention with prevention?
The problem with prevention
is that it seems too easy. Prevention is the most important element of maintaining good oral
health but also the one that
seems most basic. At Curaden,
we aim to change the narrative
around prevention with our
iTOP method, which focuses on
perfect individual prophylaxis.
We train dentists and hygienists
to become real leaders in prevention who can coach their
patients to perfect oral health
in turn.

Dr Ana Bokuchava is an ex
perienced professional in the
dental industry.

Earlier this year, Curaden also
presented The Gentle Guide to
Oral Health and Human Happiness
guide, which shows how we are
uniting thousands of dental
professionals who share our
mission to transform oral healthcare through prevention. In the
guide, 40 global experts share
their insights on prioritising
prevention, supported by the
latest research and World Health
Organization policies.
What can visitors expect at the
Curaden booth?
Prevention is often under-
represented at dental shows.
At FDIWDC24, we will therefore
offer a comprehensive blend of
sorely needed preventive education and the products that
go along with that. What dental
professionals increasingly need
are the tools and knowledge to
promote health and happiness
and maintain a healthy mouth.
Our products are designed
around four key pillars: being
attractive, accepted, effective
and safe.
At the Curaden booth, visitors
will find our typically vibrant,
colourful displays, as well as our
latest innovation: Aligner Foam,
designed to protect and enhance

oral health for aligner users,
orthodontic treatment and daily
oral care. We’ll also be show
casing the Hydrosonic pro
toothbrush, offering a free travel
set and providing educational
insights on our products. I’ll be
there to present and share
details about the Aligner Foam
and more.
What is your favourite product?
My favourite product is
Curaprox’s CS 5460 toothbrush,
a nostalgic choice from my
early days as a practising dentist.
I remember its yellow handle
with blue bristles and how its
5,460 soft filaments felt on my
gums. It was a game-changer.
Over the years, I’ve discovered
many fantastic products, like our
interdental brushes and unique
calibration system. Today, the
Aligner Foam too has a special
place in my heart. It’s hard
to choose just one favourite,
as each product contributes
uniquely to our mission of
improving oral health.

interview

“Our contributions play a crucial role
in a
 dvancing FDI’s vision and ensuring
that its impact is felt worldwide”
| An interview with Prof. Lakshman Samaranayake.
Iveta Ramonaite & Fraser Macdonald, Dental Tribune International

A

journal’s growing reputation and
impact within the dental community. Furthermore, the number of
article downloads has experienced
a substantial increase of nearly
50% over the last three years.
This trend suggests a strong and
growing interest in the journal’s
content. These achievements underscore the journal’s commitment
to excellence and its ability to
provide valuable and sought-after
research and information to its
readership.

s the flagship scientific
journal of FDI World Dental
Federation, the International
Dental Journal (IDJ) plays a crucial
role in advancing and embodying
the values and objectives of the
organisation. Over recent years,

the journal has enjoyed a vigorous
increase in its readership and academic impact owing to a forward-
thinking approach to embracing
the latest developments in dentistry. Dental Tribune International
spoke with the journal’s editor-inchief, Prof. Lakshman Samaranayake, about the continued success
of the publication and how he sees
it contributing directly to advancing
the goals of FDI.
Prof. Samaranayake, could you
tell us about your journey as
editor-in-chief of IDJ?
Thank you for inviting me to this
interview. I am delighted to share with
you the substantial progress of IDJ
since I took over as the editor-in-chief
in January 2021. For example, the journal’s impact factor increased by over
24% to 3.2 during this period, and more
importantly, we are now a top-quartile
journal in the general dentistry sector
of the Clarivate rankings.
Of course, this is due to the remarkable team effort of the editorial
board, FDI leadership and our publishing company, Elsevier. We should
also not forget my predecessors,
who prepared this path for us.

Prior to accepting this position,
I was editor-in-chief of the Journal
of Investigative and Clinical Dentistry
for a decade and had written over
400 publications. In addition, I was
a chair of the FDI Science Com
mittee and a councillor of FDI.
This wide range of experience has
helped me develop IDJ so that it is
now positioned in the top echelons
of dentistry journals.

| As editor-in-chief of the IDJ since 2021, Prof. Lakshman Samaranayake has played a crucial role in the
journal’s increased readership and improved academic ranking.
How has IDJ contributed to global
oral health, particularly since it
became an open-access journal
in 2021?
The implementation of an open-
access policy for IDJ has been a
truly transformative development
with important consequences. This
policy ensures that IDJ is now accessible to anyone with an internet
connection, regardless of their lo
cation in the world. This significant
shift from the previous pay-per-view
policy has removed barriers that
previously made the journal in
accessible to many of our colleagues,
especially those in developing
regions.
A recent poll conducted among
the regional member organisations
demonstrates that a significant
number of them now regularly
read the journal. This indicates
that our efforts are putting into
practice the ethos of FDI, namely,
to make valuable dental research

and information available to a
wider audience. By embracing
the open-access policy, we are
effectively fulfilling FDI’s vision

and mission to the fullest extent
possible.
What are the main topics and
research areas covered by IDJ,

and how do they align with the
journal’s aims?
Currently, the content of each
journal issue is divided into five
subsections: practice-related research, international public health,
interprofessional education and
practice, science and technology in
dentistry, and artificial intelligence (AI)
in dentistry.
Prior to my tenure as editor-inchief, IDJ had established a reputation as a journal that focused on
community dentistry. However,
this approach had limitations,
as it excluded the publication of
contemporary technological advancements in dentistry. Recognising this, I have worked to make
the journal more inclusive and
broader in spectrum, allowing for
the publication of cutting-edge
research across various areas of
dentistry in addition to public
health issues.

For instance, we recently introduced the subsection dedicated to

14

2024.world-dental-congress.org

AI in dentistry, which complements
the section on science and technology in dentistry that was introduced last year. This pioneering
step sets IDJ apart as the first dental
journal to incorporate such a specialised focus on AI. By embracing
emerging topics and research developments, I believe that we are
at the forefront of the generation
of valuable insights for the dental
community.
What significant milestones and
achievements has IDJ reached in
its over 70 years of continuous
publication?
IDJ has a rich history, originally
serving as a means of disseminating information on FDI activities
over 73 years ago. Over time, it has
evolved into a publication that features peer-reviewed scientific articles
relevant to international public
health as well as informative articles
aimed at clinicians.
Notably, in the past two years,
IDJ has made significant progress
in its ranking among dentistry
publications. In 2023, it moved up
from the third quartile to the
second quartile. This year, it has
achieved an even higher ranking,
and it is now placed within the top
quartile as the 25th journal out of
157 dentistry journals. This signi
ficant improvement reflects the

How does IDJ support FDI’s vision
of a world with optimal oral health,
and how does it contribute to
FDI’s broader goals in international advocacy and oral health
promotion?
As discussed earlier, our strategic mission is closely aligned with
FDI’s vison, as we aim to be an
impactful journal that promotes
diversity, equity and inclusivity
while also championing the interdisciplinarity of oral and dental
research. One notable example of
this can be seen in the expansion
of our editorial board over the past
three years. Initially, we had 31 editors,
representing only nine countries.
However, we have since grown
to include 80 colleagues from
25 countries. Combined with our
open access policy, this significant
increase in diversity has resulted
in a greater utility of the journal,
as evidenced by an almost twofold
rise in article downloads. This
achievement serves as a testament
to our commitment to aligning with
FDI’s vision of a world with optimal
oral health.
I firmly believe that, through our
efforts in disseminating knowledge
and our advocacy role in highlighting the annual FDI events, we serve
as ambassadors, reaching all corners of the globe. Our contributions
play a crucial role in advancing FDI’s
vision and ensuring that its impact
is felt worldwide.

Editorial note: An IDJ session will take
place on Saturday, 14 September, from
09:00 to 11:00. The session will take
place in the Hamidiye hall on the
B2 floor of ICC.

“In the past two years, IDJ has made significant

rogress in its ranking among dentistry publications.”

for the faint-hearted however!
By rail, the Turkish railways authority has regular train schedules
between Istanbul and Hungary,
Romania, Moldova, Greece and
Bulgaria; however, these are
long-distance trains that often
take a considerable time.

Getting to and

Transportation by taxi is available from both airports to the congress venues, and the estimated
travel time is 55 minutes from Istanbul Airport (European side) and
50 minutes from Sabiha Gökçen
International Airport (Asian side).
If using the train, take the
M2 Yenikapı–Hacıosman metro
line and get off at Osmanbey or
Taksim stations to easily access
the conference centres. Direct bus
transportation options to Harbiye
are available from various central
districts, including Taksim, Eminönü

and Mecidiyeköy. The congress
location is only a 2-minute walk
from the bus stop in front of TRT
Istanbul Radio. Finally, the Besiktas–
Harbiye minibus is accessible from
Besiktas ferry terminal, which connects to Harbiye Avenue (Harbiye
C
 addesi). The congress location
is approximately a 3-minute walk
from the Harbiye minibus stop.
