The international flavor of the event is inescapable, with the flags of various represented countries providing a commanding presence in the Crystal Palace — the soaring, 15-story glass atrium welcoming attendees to the Jacob K. Dr. James Doundoulakis, a prosthodontist and cosmetic dentistry specialist with private practices in New York City and Greenwich, Conn., will take over the reins of GNYDM in January 2020, replacing Dr. Lauro Medrano-Saldaña, the first Latino dentist elected president of this dental organization. It’s a fittingly big welcome by a meeting that continues to post its own soaring numbers: Last year the meeting welcomed 52,320 registrants, among which 20,187 were dentists, 3,949 were hygienists, 5,206 were dental assistants and 2,319 were office administrators, according to meeting organizers. The numbers confirm the meeting’s reputation as a source of education and insight for the entire dental team — including those in the lab, with the Dental Laboratory Technician four-day conference returning for its third year. Other sector conferences running parallel with the overall meeting include the 3-D Printing & Digital Dentistry Conference; the World Implant Expo; Global Orthodontic Conference; the New York State Academy of Gen- eral Dentistry Public Health Conference; the second Pediatric Dentistry Summit; the Sleep Apnea Symposium; and the International Oral Cancer Symposium. Consolidating all of these sectors in the meeting’s expansive exhibit hall are 1,700 booths staffed by top talent from the world’s most renowned dental companies and organizations. Regardless of specialization or special interest, attendees can experience the industry’s most up-to-date and innovative technologies, methods, products and procedures. Also among the exhibit hall’s many highlights is the 425-seat Live Dentistry arena, featuring top clinicians performing real-time procedures with patient volunteers. Sessions are scheduled throughout the four days, including today’s three sessions on “Simplifying Posterior 3 Composites,” “Successful Options for In-Office Whitening” and “Today’s Digital Implant Workflow.” Also on today’s agenda are sessions associated with the “All-Day Botox and Facial Fillers Seminar/ Workshop,” the “Women Dentists Leadership Conference: Roadmap for Success” and the “Hispanic Dental Association Program.” From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today is the “Scientific Poster Session” by residents, post-graduate dentists, dental students, dental hygienists students and international presenters. One C.E. credit can be earned through attendance at the poster sessions, which are located outside of the special events hall on Lower Level 1. With the opening of the exhibit hall, Sunday is always a big day at the GNYDM, but it’s also just a hint, with three more big days yet to come. AD[4] => from page one 4 GREATEST from page 1 7 helped organize the world’s first Consensus Conference on State of the Science on Implant Dentistry and is the co-author of the consumer reference book “The Perfect Smile: The Complete Guide to Cosmetic Dentistry.” Asked about what changes he would implement as GNYDM general chairman, Doundoulakis said, “First and foremost, if it’s not broke, don’t fix it. “GNDYM is the greatest dental meeting in the world. We have a winning formula,” he said. “We want to continue that formula, and on top of that, we want to expand to new horizons. And, of course, every year we want to promote the latest, the greatest, the fastest and the most successful and predictable techniques and equipment for the dental professionals and dental specialists.” Doundoulakis added, “We are going to expand next year our dental implant program, our esthetic program and start new programs, including a special needs program for patients who require advanced care, above and beyond their dental needs.” Regarding international attendees, who are a growing part of parAD A cover of one of the books authored by Dr. James Doundoulakis 5 ticipants, Doundoulakis said large numbers come from Latin America. The general chairman-elect said: “My vision is to make the Greater New York Dental Meeting even more accessible to the international dental community. Latin American dentists have been attending, but we would like to expand our opportunities to dentists Greater New York Dental Meeting — Dec. 1, 2019 who practice in Europe, Africa and Asia. But, as I said, we have many predictable and successful programs that GNYDM has had for multiple years, and we are going to continue those programs and continue to make them a success. We hope everyone will strongly consider attending the meeting, not only this year but in 2020 and 2021, when I will be general chairman of the GNDYM.” Regarding opportunities for European, African and Asian dentists to attend GNYDM, the implant dentistry specialist said: “We have many events throughout the week that we offer our attendees at the Jacob Javits, which is one of the largest convention centers in the country. One of the reasons we don’t have as many tours as some of the other meetings around the country have is that we are in one of the most exciting cities in the world. We have great shows, great theater, great museums, great restaurants — we offer New York as our backdrop. Our attendees come to the best meeting in the U.S., maybe one of the best in the world, and you also have New York City to visit.” Costs, however, can be a barrier for dentists from developing countries, because New York is an expensive city. Doundoulakis said that GNYDM has “38 affiliated hotels, and half of them give us prices that are well under the average New York hotel room rate, and they can accommodate two-to-three individuals per room, so the cost per night is manageable for a visit to New York.” Regarding his plans to expand the World Dental Implant Congress, which is part of GNYDM, the chairman elect said that having been past president of the Academy of Osseointegration, he has collaborated with all dental implant associations. “We offer courses with lectures by very well-known educators, the costs at our meeting are less per program than at other venues, and we offer a huge exhibit space for all the dental community, not only for dental implant specialists,” he said. Doundoulakis concluded by saying: “We are looking forward to greeting everybody who comes to enjoy New York City, to enjoy the education and the exhibit space at GNYDM. You won’t be disappointed. As one of the largest meetings in the U.S., I can assure you, not just personally, but like all the attendees who have been to this meeting will stand behind me and say, that it is one of the best experiences for the dental community in the world.”[5] => [6] => 6 exhibitors Greater New York Dental Meeting — Dec. 1, 2019 Now’s the time to buy 430 Torque handpieces Stop by booth No. 3407 for the current promotion The 430 Torque high-speed handpieces. (Photos/ José Antonio Rosario for Dental Tribune) 5 By Javier de Pisón, Managing Editor, Dental Tribune Latin America n In the crowded field of dental events, where many can look alike, the expertly organized 2019 Glidewell Dental Symposium is a rare treat that plays by its own rules. More than a thousand dentists seemed to agree when they met Nov. 8-9 in Orlando, Fla., at the Hilton Bonnet Creek & Waldorf Astoria hotel for the third annual Glidewell Dental Symposium. Praised for its clinical, educational and networking values, the symposium offered interesting lectures, short and to the point, which allowed for the inclusion of up to 14 speakers per day. Meanwhile, the Panel Discussion sessions allowed attendees to ask questions to speakers immediately following presentations, providing a direct and interactive communication platform between attendees and experts. In his opening remarks, Jim Glidewell, president and CEO of Glidewell Laboratories and Glidewell Dental, described how he founded at his home, almost 50 years ago, what is now “the largest dental laboratory in the world with a staff of 5,000 employees.” The CEO of the Newport Beach, Calif.-based company, added that Glidewell has also “become very large in research and development” and in finding ways to provide less expensive crowns for patients of all economic strata. “We are trying to do crowns for everybody,” he said. While the company has evolved into a leader in the development of cutting-edge dental materials, products and digital design systems like “glidewell.io,” this didn’t stop Jim Glidewell from walking around the exhibit area all day, where he made himself readily available to attendees who wanted to ask him questions, another sign of how different the Glidewell Dental Symposium is from other dental events. Neil Park, vice president for clinical affairs and editor of Glidewell’s “Chairside” magazine, jump-started the symposium with a summary of the event’s scientific program, including lectures by dental leaders, such as Jack Hahn, Carrie Webber, Paresh B. Patel, Anamaria Muresan, Randolph R. Resnik and David Hochberg, among others. Lectures were complemented by an intensive program of hands-on workshops. The issues discussed provide a clear picture of the forward-thinking way in which Glidewell approaches dentistry. They included varied top- Above, a view of the exhibit area at the 2019 Glidewell Dental Symposium. 3 At left, Glidewell President and CEO Jim Glidewell, with his wife, Parvina, at the 2019 Glidewell Dental Symposium. 5 Here in New York For more information on any Glidewell technology or products, or to check out dates for the next Glidewell Dental Symposium, stop by booth No. 4414. ics, such as “Mill it Chairside or Send it to the Lab?”, “Digital Dentistry: Much More Than Crowns,” “Getting Your Patients to Say ‘Yes’ to Big Cases,” “Full-Arch Implant Restorations for GPs” and “The Emergency Implant,” by Keynote Speaker Jack Hahn, known for his Hahn Implants System. Attendee Ivan Quintana, who practices in Sacramento, Calif., and participates in many dental meetings and events, said: “I have never seen such high-quality speakers in one day.” Quintana praised the presentations, saying that they were “very scientific and didn’t mention sponsor companies, like they do at other events.” Tampa, Fla.-based clinician Nicolas Nieto agreed, saying it was an “excellent” event. “It’s well-organized, and the topics discussed were very good.” As for the products on exhibit, he said he liked “the new bone-graft regenerative materials” of the Newport Biologics line. The exhibit area showcased a large array of materials, products and advanced new technologies. Account manager Jesse Hernandez explained the digital design system “glidewell. io,” which he calls Glidewell’s newest innovation in digital technology. “It allows clinicians to provide same-day dentistry, along with the most reliable materials, like BruxZir, which is the number one zirconia on the market right now,” he said. This advanced design software seamlessly integrates data input from the intraoral scanner, guides the clinician step-by-step through the digital design process of the restoration and suggests the best material to mill it in the most efficient way, he said. All of this can be accomplished in two hours, according to Hernandez, who added the system is very intuitive and easy to use. Advances in the new material BruxZir Esthetic Solid Zirconia allow this material to be used in the esthetic zone due to its high translucency. However, at the same time, it’s also strong enough to be placed in the posterior zone of the mouth. Clinicians, in fact “can do threeand four-unit bridges without fear of fracture or that it would not blend in with the surrounding teeth,” said Muresan, clinical research director at Glidewell. This type of zirconia, which comes sandblasted from the lab, can also be manufactured thin enough so it’s not bulky on the teeth, she said, but strong enough so it can be placed without the worry of fracture, if applying with strong pressure. The use in the esthetic zone of BruxZir Esthetic is due in large part to the inclusion of yttrium, a material that adds a natural-looking translucency to zirconia. According to Muresan, results of a three-year clinical trial show high esthetics in the anterior zone, durability and also an easier and more reliable procedure for bonding. Materials like obsidian ceramics, the Hahn Implants System and a line of products to reduce snoring and obstructive sleep apnea, like the Silent Nite mouthguard, were also presented at the symposium.[13] => [14] => exhibitors 14 Greater New York Dental Meeting — Dec. 1, 2019 STELLAR materials at the forefront of implant surgery By TAUB Products Staff n All-on-X immediate and delayed load full-arch guided surgeries have become the pinnacle procedure in implant full-mouth smile reconstruction. Full-arch guided surgeries offer a patient with an otherwise non-existent smile the ability to have a confidence-inspiring smile with excellent occlusion and alignment, according to TAUB products. A guided surgery is not inexpensive for the patient; it has a price tag that causes the patient to expect the very best components and materials are used for the very best results. If the patient must return to the office due to PMMA denture fractures at the cylinder interface during the middle of the healing phase, not only is the patient upset, but the labor and time to fix the issue and reseat the healing denture will seriously affect the overall profit, patient confidence, doctor confidence in material resin choice and predictable outcomes of the procedure, TAUB asserts. STELLAR DC Acrylic is a revolutionary, dual-cure PMMA pick-up and conversion resin with excellent cure speed and unsurpassed durability over other pick-up resin used for All-on-X denture pick-ups and conversions, according to the company. It can speed up the pick-up and conversion time by more than 30 minutes. STELLAR offers extreme, “rock hard” durability and won’t fracture during the healing phase, when used as directed, TAUB states. It provides the fastest production time of any acrylic, has no shrinkage, has no polymerization heat during cure and causes no tension after cure, according to the company. Officially launching at this year’s GNYDM, STELLAR Attachment is specially formulated for picking up “locator” overdenture attachments. Utilizing very similar technology to STELLAR DC Acrylic, our STELLAR Attachment offers a four-minute selfset time. This offers clinicians ample working time to position and pick-up multiple overdenture attachments at once. “The STELLAR family of PMMA Acrylics are a game changer for pick-up and conversions of immediate load temporary restorations and locator overdenture attachments,” said Jordan Taub, vice president, TAUB Products. “Using our chemistry and technology, the CDT, super GP and periodontist now have an ultradurable, fast setting, no heat, no shrinkage acrylic that dramatically reduces production times.” TAUB is well known for FUSIONZr Dual Cure Zirconia Cement and an implant restorative system consisting of three products that solve many issues when placing cement and screw-retained implant restorations: GoCHx Gel Syringeable Chlorhexidine, Liquid Magic Resin Barrier abutment access plug and ZERO-G Bio-Implant Cement. There are no cords, no console and no long tubing. The entire device fits in the palm of your hand. It is actually smaller and lighter than many traditional syringes. It allows dentists to give slow, consistent injections, thereby reducing patient discomfort and pain. It’s common knowledge that many patients fear going to the dentist, and the No. 1 reason why is they fear getting injections. That fear may be the result of a bad experience or it may be because many injections hurt. They hurt because many dentists deliver an entire cartridge of anesthetic in less than 20 seconds. Local anesthetics are acidic, and delivering anesthetic quickly stings. It’s like squirting some lemon juice on a cut. Slowing down an injection allows the body to raise the pH of the anesthetic, thereby reducing the sting. Dental injections can also be painful and damage tissue because of pressure variations. A human hand just can’t maintain even pressure in the same way that a computer-controlled device can. Too much pressure and the patient will experience pain. Using the Dentapen will improve the patient experience by providing more comfortable and consistent injections, according to the company. With a Dentapen, dentists can focus more on the patient and less on their technique. The intuitive design of the Dentapen means there is no steep learning curve. It isn’t necessary to adapt a technique to the device, but rather the device allows a dentist to use the same techniques as a standard syringe but improves upon the result. Assembling and operating the Dentapen is simple, according to the company. There are two choices of grips that allow you to hold it like a traditional syringe or like a pen. It accommodates standard dental anesthetic cartridges and needles — no need for special proprietary supplies. It offers three speeds and two modes, making it easy to choose the right options for each type of injection. The Dentapen was designed with patient comfort and safety in mind. That is why it includes automatic aspiration. To aspirate, simply activate the flow by pressing down on the finger grip, and stop the flow by pressing it a second time. The plunger will retract a little, creating the negative pressure needed for aspiration, and then return to its starting position. Every time the flow is stopped, aspiration will occur. Here in New York To learn more about the Dentapen, stop by the Septodont booth, No. 3219. The Dentapen can be held like a syringe or like a pen and is probably smaller than you might think. Shiffman, DDS n Snoring and sleep-disordered breathing affects millions of Americans, both adults and children.1,2 The signs and symptoms are the result of partial or complete collapse of the upper airway during sleep.3 The structures involved in our protocol include the soft palate, uvula and the base of the tongue.4 The goal of the treatment is to decrease the amount of blockage of the upper airway.5 Dentists are in a great position to help screen and, in many cases, treat these problems with airway health management. The gold standard for the treatment of sleep-disordered breathing is the CPAP-type device. Following that, in 1981, was the introduction of mandibular advancement devices (MAD). Both of these treatment modalities show a reduction in compliance over time and significant side effects. However, the NIGHTLASE ™ Snoring and Sleep Apnea Reduction Therapy protocol is a unique approach to treatment using the Fotona Lightwalker dental laser with a proprietary protocol and handpiece. Another positive benefit is the 24-hour-a-day improvement in nasal breathing vs. CPAP and MAD. NIGHTLASE uses the photothermal capabilities of the Fotona Lightwalker laser to convert and initiate the formation of new and more elastic collagen.6 The target mucosal tissues are the oropharynx, soft palate and uvula. The proprietary “Smooth Mode” pulse characteristics create a non-ablative heat generation that initiates the conversion of existing collagen to more elastic and organized forms and also initiates “neocollagenesis,” the creation of new collagen. The effect of the laser energy as it penetrates (by transmission) deeper into the tissues is a low-level photobiomodulation that directly affects the fibroblast cells and has been found to stimulate protein production from quiescent cells.7 This process results in a visible elevation of the soft palate and uvula Here in New York To learn more about the NIGHTLASE Snoring and Sleep Apnea Reduction Therapy protocol and the Fotona Lightwalker dental laser, stop by booth No. 3433. NIGHTLASE therapy is indicated for cases when the patient has been diagnosed with chronic snoring, UARS or mild to moderate sleep apnea and either cannot or chooses not to wear a MAD appliance or CPAP device. It can also be used in cotherapy with those devices. NIGHTLASE has a significant success rate in producing a positive change in sleep patterns. Research published by Miracki and Visintin8 has shown that it can reduce and attenuate snoring and provides an effective non-invasive modality to lessen the effects of obstructive sleep apnea. NIGHTLASE therapy is not a permanent alteration and lasts from six to 12 months and is easily touched up at follow-up appointments. We consider NIGHTLASE to be another tool in our treatment “toolbox,” giving us more options and the possibility of better results when used in combination with MADs and CPAP for those patients who may not get adequate improvements from those therapies alone.
