Scandinavia’s largest dental show invites all to 2013 edition
New products and technologies on display at Stockholmsmässan
 Sweden’s largest dental show
once again invites dentists, technicians and other dental staff from
Scandinavia and beyond to learn
about the latest dental products
and technologies in dentistry. The
three-day event, to be held at the
Stockholmsmässan fairground in
Älvsjö in the capital of Sweden, is
being organised by the Swedish
Dental Association in collaboration
with the Swedish Dental Trade
Association, and will showcase the
latest equipment and materials
available to dental professionals today.
This year will see TV gladiator
Johan “Plexus” Oldenmark as a special guest discussing the benefits of
oral health in children and adolescents. According to the organisers,
he will also be moderating a dental

fashion show organised by students and staff from the Karolinska
Institutet’s dental school in Huddinge near Stockholm.
More than 10,000 visitors are expected for this year’s meeting,
which takes place every autumn.
Last year’s edition in Gothenburg
attracted over 13,000 attendees,
the majority of whom came from
Scandinavia. Swedental 2013 will
focus on aesthetic aspects in dental
treatment that have gained increasing significance in dentistry in recent years. Besides clinical methods in this field, there will be discussions on the ethics and social issues
related to aesthetic treatment.
New products for treatment outcomes that are more predictable
and an improved workflow in den-

tal practices and laboratories will
be presented at the industry exhibition, which is supported by 180
sponsors this year. Among others,
Finnish dental equipment manufacturer Planmeca has announced
that it will be showcasing its latest
tools for a complete digital workflow. Furthermore, Danish dental
solutions provider 3Shape will
have its recently launched TRIOS
intra-oral scanning system on display. Among other products, new
systems for endodontic treatment,
as well as restorative materials,
will be presented by VDW and
GC Nordic.
On Friday at the AfterDent party,
to be held at the entrance of the exhibition hall, visitors to the show
will be able to meet with friends,
partners and colleagues in a re-

(DTI/Photo courtesy of Stockholmmässan, Sweden)

laxed atmosphere. Drink tickets
will be available at SEK48, which
will equal one beer, a glass of wine
or a cider, according to the organisers. Entertainment will be provided
by Swedish singers Magnus Carlsson and Nanne Grönvall.
First held in 1973, Swedental has
become the leading forum and
trade fair for the dental industry in

Scandinavia. More information
about the meeting, parallel scientific sessions, and exhibition is
available on its website, www.swedental.org. The organisers have
launched an application for mobile
devices and tablet computers that
is aimed at giving visitors quick access to event-related information
both ahead of and during the
show.

Dental market in Europe
increases with more sales
achieved online

 Overall sales of dental equipment
in Europe increased last year, according to a market study by the Association of European Dental Dealers (ADDE) and Federation of the
European Dental Industry (FIDE).
Sales of consumables remained at
the same level in 2012, it also found.
In contrast to the steadily declining number of direct sales, email
and web sales increased continuously in nearly all the countries examined. Among these, Denmark
was ahead of France and Great
Britain as the fastest growing dental market in Europe. With respect
to 2012, it was found that despite a
slight increase in the number of
practicing dentists in Europe, the
number of dental technicians has
not grown. The number of dental
practices and labs has actually decreased, signaling a nearly uniform trend toward consolidation
across the continent.

gum disease, as well as the shifting
focus of dental professionals from
treatment to prevention.
Growth in this market will be
driven by a rising demand for preventive dental care products, including fluoride gels, prophylactic
pastes and dental sealants, owing
to an increasing awareness of the
likely implications of untreated
dental diseases. Worldwide, a
greater number of dentists are fo-

cusing on preventive dentistry,
which is aimed at reducing the
need for dental treatment, such as
extractions or fillings, by adopting
preventive measures and reducing
the costs associated with these procedures at the same time.
The report includes statistics
from the US, Canada, Japan, Europe, Asia-Pacific and Latin America, and provides annual estimates
and forecasts for the period 2010

through 2018. Given the number
of governmental interventions encouraging preventive treatment
among children and low-income
families in particular, the US represents the single largest market
worldwide. The Asia-Pacific market is expected to exhibit the
strongest growth, with a compound annual growth rate of 4 per
cent over the period.
In addition, the report profiles

While the number of graduates
in dental medicine in Europe declined significantly in comparison
to 2011, the same was considerably
higher in the US. Nevertheless, the
ratio of practicing dentists to patients remained unchanged.
FIDE and ADDE have been collaborating since 1998 and together
publish an annual market study of
the European dental industry.
Along with figures on customers
and end-consumers, the report
also covers sales values for the
main product categories such as
dental equipment, consumables,
implants and CAD/CAM, as well as
data on distribution channels, information about current European
VAT rates and their influence on
the dental market.

CAD/CAM and growth factors—
Key areas of dental innovation
By Dr Nilesh R. Parmar, UK

Dentistry has come a long way
since our colleagues were forced to
use foot powered drills and mix
amalgam from its bare components. Modern day dental equipment and materials are at the cutting edge of medical and dental
innovation, and it’s trade shows
such as the International Dental
Show (IDS) where the develop-

is now almost universally used in
the fabrication of dental implant
abutments and bars, reducing construction times, designs and fit.
Dentists are now beginning to use
chairside CAD/CAM devices to restore dental implants without the
need for any impressions.

CBCT 3-D scanners and
CAD/CAM integration
Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans are now commonplace in dentistry, particularly in
implant dentistry where Grondahl
(2007) found that 40 per cent of all
CBCT scans were taken for implant
treatment. Where 3-D scans were
reaching a shortfall was in actually
relaying the information obtained
into the mouth during the surgical
procedure. One recent innovation
has been to overlay scans of the patient’s own teeth and soft tissues
onto the CBCT scan data. This gives
an accurate representation of the
hard and soft tissues and their relationship to each other. For exam-

study model and then wax up the
ideal final restoration contour, ensuring some barium sulfate within
the wax in order for it to show up in
the scan. This was both costly and
time consuming. Recent developments have allowed one to take an

stand the proposed work and its execution.
Taking this one step further,
guided implant surgery now allows us to not only plan implant
placement using ideal restora-

ments of the future are announced.
Modern dentists no longer have
merely a straight probe and a dental drill at their disposal. We now
have scans, 3-D images, growth factors and an almost unlimited
choice of materials available to
use.
In writing this piece, I made a
tough decision to focus on what
I believe to be key areas of dental
innovation. It is in these areas of
imaging, CAD/CAM technology
and growth factors that I believe
are going to be important in the
dental surgery of the future.

“The popularity of chairside CAD/CAM
units has never been greater.”
ple, an implant can be planned in
the implant software with the angulation of the implant taking into
account the ideal position of the final crown, which can also be
shown in the CBCT scan.
In order to do this previously,
the dentist would have to make a

intra-oral scan using a suitable device, such as a CEREC or iTero machine, and overlay this with the
CBCT scan. No models, no wax ups;
the procedure is almost instant and
can be done with the patient in the
chair. As a patient education tool,
this visual format is invaluable, allowing patients to fully under-

tively driven protocols, but actually allows us to make a guided surgical stent, made in-house or by a
lab, and place the implant through
the stent. Studies have found that
this is an accurate treatment
modality that can be reliably executed. Flapless surgery with immediate temporisation has the ability
to revolutionise the patient journey and help us to meet their expectations.

CAD/CAM
Facial scanners

Computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing has
had a presence in dentistry for
nearly 20 years. However, it is only
in the last ten years that developments have really made a difference in the reliability, ease of use
and functionality of these devices.
We now have CAD/CAM machines
(e.g., CEREC, iTero, Lava) that can
scan an entire arch, design and fabricate all-ceramic restorations in
the practice. The popularity of
chairside CAD/CAM units has
never been greater. The materials
that we are able to use in conjunction with CAD/CAM scanners have
gone from monolithic, one shade
blocks to multi-layered, all-ceramic, lithium-disilicate constructions that can be sintered and finalised in as little as 15 minutes.
The appearance of these
restorations, although still needing a well-trained (and artistic) dentist, could be said to be on par with
certain lab-based fabrications
whilst maintaining the advantages
of being a chairside single visit
restoration. CAD/CAM technology

A small but rapidly developing
area of digital dentistry is facial
scanners. These are in their infancy at the moment, with a lot of
companies still trying to iron out
the bugs in the machines. Their potential applications in the field of
plastic surgery, facial aesthetics,
orthodontics, implant surgery and
orthognathic surgery are endless.

Fig. 2

I have been fortunate to see a
prototype facial scanner from
Sirona and even managed to have
my face scanned (Figs. 1 & 2). The
detail achievable with these units
is impressive. Once this information is combined with 3-D scans,
teeth scans and jaw articulation, a
fully working and movable representation of the patient’s head can
be compiled on the computer
screen. Allowing for treatment
planning and assessment to be carried out without any need to see the
patient. One application of this
may be in developing countries,
where various experts from
around the world can examine
complicated facial reconstruction

cases without them actually seeing
the patient. As already mentioned,
the opportunities for patient education are huge, and with procedures such as plastic surgery and
orthognathic surgery being so difficult to properly consent for, facial
scanners will greatly aid clinicians.

Growth factors
Available for a long time in medicine and dentistry, growth factors
have been the reserve of PhD students and professors until recently. The resurgence of the usage
of platelet rich plasma (PRP) has
come about with added research
showing that using PRP can
greatly improve osteoblast proliferation (Parmar 2009) and accelerate soft-tissue healing. Companies
are now offering clinical courses
for dentists to make, produce and
use PRP in their own surgeries
within 15 to 30 minutes. The main
advantage of PRP is that it’s free; is
obtained from the patients’ own
blood, thus removing the risk of rejection; and can be made in vast
quantities. As more research is
published, coupled with simpler
production kits, PRP use will increase in all aspects of invasive
dental surgery.
The above is just a short description of what is being developed for
the future. Dentistry has never
been so intertwined with technology. The next ten years will prove
to be exciting and I eagerly await to
hear, see and use the new technologies that are being developed today.

International mercury treaty signed
Minamata Convention bans products, Agrees to amalgam phase-down
 Certain products containing
mercury will be banned from 2020,
according to a new international
treaty signed by governments in
Minamata in Japan last week. The
regulations apply to the production and trade of batteries, cosmet-

ics and fluorescence lamps containing the toxic material, among
other products. Amalgam dental
fillings are not affected by the ban.
However, the treaty agreed on a
number of provisions on the phas-

ing down of the controversial dental material. The Convention,
which was proceeded by five intergovernmental negotiation rounds
and set in place for adoption at a
meeting in Geneva in January, was
signed by 87 countries.

Governments
now have three
years to develop and
implement national
strategies to reduce
or eliminate the production and indus

Dental associations reacted positively to the decision, which will
permit the use of amalgam as a
restorative dental material for the
years to come. Dr Stuart Johnston
from the British Dental Association, who took part in the negotiations on behalf of the FDI World
Dental Federation, commented:
“We are delighted that the Minamata Convention allows the dental
profession continued access to a
key restorative material. Dental
amalgam is safe and effective: it
has been in use for over 150 years
and no studies have demonstrated
any harm to human health.”
He said that despite amalgam
not being banned by the treaty,
however, the dental profession is
committed to phasing down the
use of the material through the prevention of dental diseases, the development of alternative materials
and effective amalgam management. Guidelines in this respect for
professionals, health officials and
the public are currently being compiled and will be released by the organisation soon. The initial steps
have already been taken with a pilot project launched recently by
the FDI in partnership with the
United Nations Environment Programme in East Africa that aims to
train professionals in the country
on managing and recycling amalgam waste more effectively.

Flexibilitet

Amalgam remains one of the
most widely used restorative
materials worldwide. Particularly
in developing countries, it is often
the only affordable means of treating dental caries, despite the availability of other methods, such as
atraumatic restorative treatment.
Unfortunately, it is also a significant
source of mercury pollution. Recent
national tests conducted in Pakistan, for example, found that levels
in urban dental hospitals and practices were up to 20 times higher
than acceptable levels, which was
considered largely due to poor amalgam waste management.

Flexibilitet på en helt ny nivå. NYA A-dec 400 ger dig chansen att välja en

According to estimates by the

Dental professionals in Europe
targeted by perio awareness campaign
n Periodontal disease is a major
public health issue that should be
addressed increasingly by the medical and dental communities, the
European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) and the American
Academy of Periodontology (AAP)
have stated in a joint manifesto. In
order to convey this message to
more dentists, the EFP recently
launched an international awareness campaign aimed at more than
300,000 professionals in Europe.

Besides the manifesto, the campaign will provide information
through regularly updated online
dossiers, video documentaries and
other promotional activities. A
seven-minute clip was presented to

the public in Monaco and is already
available on video-sharing platforms like YouTube.
In addition to the EFP member
associations, the campaign has
received support from dental

con.sumables provider ColgatePalmolive’s GABA and other professional dental bodies. Owing to these
partnerships, the campaign will be
presented at most of the national
member events throughout the

The EFP currently consists of
28 national periodontal associations
that boast a combined membership
of over 13,000 professionals. Besides

Profs. Niklas Lang, Mariano Sanz and
Maurizio Tonetti discussing the results of the
EFP/AAP workshop in Monaco.

Kicked off at the recent international symposium of the Swiss Osteology Foundation in Monaco in
May, the Outreach Campaign aims
to highlight both the relationship between periodontal and systematic
diseases, as well as the importance
of periodontitis prevention. According to the manifesto, which has been
available on the organisation’s website since March, there is convincing
evidence from a large number of
studies that periodontitis may increase the risk of developing diabetes or cardiovascular disease, and
may lead to adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as preterm birth or low
birth weight. Other systemic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or
certain kinds of cancers are also
thought to be influenced by periodontal inflammation.
In light of this evidence, dental
professionals will have to fundamentally change the perception of their responsibilities as
providers of general health, the
manifesto states. Multidisciplinary
approaches through collaboration
between dental and medical communities, as well as within the dental communities, will have to be
developed further to meet future patients’ needs.
The content of the manifesto is
based on recommendations made
during a joint EFP/APA workshop,
which took place in Spain in November last year and drew 80 experts in
the field. The workshop was held under the leadership of Profs. Mariano
Sanz from Spain, Maurizio Tonetti
from Italy, and Niklas Lang from the
University of Hong Kong’s Faculty of
Dentistry. Among other measures, it
recommends thorough periodontal
evaluation of patients presenting
with signs of systematic diseases by
dentists. It also calls for more clinical
trials and studies researching the effects of periodontal therapy on several disease factors in different populations in order to obtain additional
reliable scientific data on these issues.

European dental implant market
limited by financial uncertainty

Swedental Stockholm 2013

Countries in Eastern Europe poised for highest growth
By Carmen Chan, Canada
The dental implant market, consisting of implants, abutments, and
other devices, in Europe was valued
AD

at approximately US$ 1.6 billion in
2012. Until the end of the year, the
market will continue to contract
slightly. It is expected to recover,
however, and reach a value of just
under US$ 2.3 billion by 2021.
Germany reigns as the largest
market, worth over US$ 300 million in 2012—almost the equivalent
of France and Spain combined.
Overall, these two countries have
the lowest growth rates, with both
suffering from either low GDP
growth or high unemployment
rates along with overall concerns
regarding unsustainable national
debt levels.
Demand for dental implant
treatment continues to be fuelled
by the ageing population. The US
Census Bureau forecasts that the
population aged 65 and older in Europe’s seven key markets will grow
at an average compound annual
growth rate of approximately 1.5 %
until 2021, whereas the total population will only grow at approximately 0.3 % per year. As people
age, their oral health tends to deteriorate, resulting in edentulism, for
which implant restoration is increasingly becoming a recommended treatment option.
For most European patients,
dental implant procedures are considered elective and need to be
paid out-of-pocket by patients. As a
result, financial considerations are
among the most important factors
influencing patients’ decision to
undergo these treatments. The unstable economy has resulted in increased patient hesitance to seek
dental implant treatment and in
higher preference for lower-risk
and less-costly traditional procedures and products, such as traditional loading (instead of immediate functional loading) and screwretained abutments (over cementretained ones).
Aside from the economy, countries such as Sweden and the
Netherlands have experienced
drastic shifts due to changes in government reimbursement. In the
past year, both countries’ markets
have suffered declines due to governments proposing changes to reimbursement. This uncertainty regarding dental implant treatment
coverage has fuelled physician and
patient reluctance to perform and
undergo procedures.
The current dental implant market is defined by a never-ending
number of competitors in the marketplace. Competition will become
increasingly fierce with the recent
merger of DENTSPLY Friadent and
Astra Tech Dental to form
DENTSPLY Implants, placing the
company in direct competition
with market leader Straumann for

High growth expected for biomaterials in Sweden
Boasted by implant procedures, the overall market will reach €287 million (US$ 375 million) in 2021
According to a recently published report, the ageing population and the growing awareness of
available dental treatment options
will contribute to a strong expansion of the European market for
dental biomaterials. Their use will
increase significantly alongside
dental implant procedures up to
2021. Revenues are expected to
grow to over € 287 million (US$ 375
million).

In particular, they expect
Geistlich to remain the leader in
the bone-graft substitute segment,
which continues to generate the
greatest revenue in the European
dental biomaterial market. With

the top spot. While physicians and
other competitors still perceive the
two as separate brands, DENTSPLY
Implants’ wider product portfolio
and greater focus on the implant
business will likely change this.
Furthermore, smaller competitors
are currently penetrating the market with a strategy that focuses on
offering products at lower costs to
entice dentists, which is especially
attractive in times of economic uncertainty.
The most growth for the dental
implant market will stem from
Eastern European countries that
are relatively underdeveloped.
These countries tend to have the
lowest implant and procedural
costs, which are attractive to patients who reside in neighbouring
countries. In particular, the Czech
Republic, Hungary and Poland will
benefit the most from patients travelling to these countries to undergo
dental implant therapy.
Tapered implants are gaining
popularity, especially as older dentists retire and are replaced by recent graduates. CAD/CAM custommilled abutments are expected to
experience the strongest growth
among all product categories in the
dental implant segment, stemming
from high demand for aesthetic
restorations. Despite slower adoption rates in the next couple of
years, growth rates will accelerate
with economic recovery.

in Canada.

regard to tissue-regeneration products, Straumann continues to be
the only significant competitor.
The high price of dental procedures was identified as one of the
main factors hindering growth.

Owing to economic concerns, patients, especially in countries with
a slow market growth such as Italy
and Spain, are more likely to cancel
or postpone expensive treatments.
However, Sweden is expected to experience the fastest growth in den-

tal biomaterials, as dental implant
procedures are partially reimbursed in the country.
The report was issued by the
Millennium Research Group, a
Canadian market intelligence

provider. It contains comprehensive data and analysis on the current state of the market for dental
biomaterials in France, Germany,
Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland
and the UK across a ten-year period.

VDW PRESENTS COMPLETE SYSTEM FOR ENDO
The RECIPROC system for root
canal preparation with one single instrument has been a success for the
manufacturer VDW. In addition to
root canal preparation, the system
has also shown very effective in removing gutta-percha and carrierbased filling during retreatment.
Owing to the design of the instrument and the reciprocating movement, the R25 is able to efficiently re-

move filling material and safely
reach working length without the
use of solvents. If the canal then
needs to be further enlarged, additional instrument sizes are available
in the RECIPROC system.
Retreatment with RECIPROC is
safe, easy and time-saving, the company said. The system includes the
VDW.GOLD RECIPROC motor, with

Swedental Stockholm 2013

which all major instrument systems can be controlled. Simultaneous
length control can be activated at all times during
preparation. In addition, it
can be combined with the
Apical Auto Stop, which
brings the motor to a halt
when the apex is reached.
A real novelty, according to VDW, is the RECI-

PROC REVERSE comfort function which
indicates when to
switch to a brushing
file motion in order to
facilitate further apical progression.
Obturation is convenient with GUTTAFUSION for RECIPROC.
The obturators of this
new carrier-based sys-

tem come with a stable core made of
crosslinked gutta-percha, coated
with flowable gutta-percha, a combination caters for a warm, three-dimensional and dense canal filling in
one application. The three obturator
sizes correspond to the instrument
sizes R25, R40 and R50.

OPEN CAD/CAM
SOLUTIONS
In order to complete its offer in
industry-leading dental equipment and software, Planmeca has
recently introduced a full range of
open CAD/CAM solutions. From
high-precision desktop milling
units to sophisticated CAD software and digital impression scanners, they include all tools that are
required for open CAD/CAM dentistry, the Finish company said.

According to Planmeca, the
quick and accurate digital impression scanner Planmeca PlanScan
provides real-time digital impressions from one-tooth to full-arch
scans, which can be sent to any dental lab for CAD work. It is also the
first unit-integrated impression
scanner. Available as a standalone
version, the Planmeca PlanScan
can also be connected to a laptop,
for example. The new open CAD
software suite for easy 3-D design,
has been integrated in the Planmeca Romexis software as a perfect tool for designing prosthetic
works from individual inlays to
full-arch bridges and abutments. Final designs can then be sent to Planmeca PlanMill 40, a new 4-axis
milling unit designed for glass ceramic and other material works.
For dental laboratories, Planmeca also offers a fast and maintenance-free desktop lab scanner for
scanning plaster casts with the
Planmeca PlanScan Lab. Final designs can be processed with Planmeca PlanMill 50, an accurate 5axis milling machine designed for
dental labs or ordered fast and reliable from Planmeca’s CAD/CAM

EVERX POSTERIOR
With everX Posterior, GC has developed a glass-fibre reinforced
composite that is said to provide
new options for restoring extensive
cavities and preventing crack propagation into filling materials and
tooth structure. According to the
company, the material meets the
growing demand for an economical
alternative restorative for extensive cavities and can be used for

restoring enamel and dentin when
combined with a conventional composite like G-ænial Posterior.
A special structure with particularly short fibres prevent cracks
and fractures that can occur in the
filling, one of the main reasons for
failure of composite and amalgam
restorations. The longevity of everX
Posterior restorations is due its high
fracture toughness values that are
equal to dentin and almost 100 per

cent as high as
those exhibited
by other composites. In addition,
the high bond
strength with both
the overlaying composite and underlying tooth structure allows reliable restorations,
the company said.
everX Posterior is particularly indicated for strengthening direct

13

composite
restorations
in extensive
posterior
cavities and
as such, enables more extensive defects to be
treated immediately and directly
chairside. These include restorations of cavities with three or more
surfaces, cavities with missing
cusps, deep cavities (including class
I and II cavities as well as endodon-

tically treated teeth) and cavities remaining after removing amalgam
as well as cavities indicated for onlays/inlays. GC said that in order to
achieve optimum aesthetics and
wear resistance, everX Posterior
must be overlaid with a light-curing
universal composite such as the
own G-ænial product family

According to A-dec, the new
A-dec 400 provides dental teams
with an option for a truly ambidextrous configuration to accommodate individual preferences. The
Radius delivery and support modules quickly and easily rotate
around the chair for complete
left/right compatibility. To elevate
treatment room proficiency and
enhance doctor access to the patient, A-dec 400 optimises ergonomics with an ultra-thin
backrest and positioning
of controls and ancillaries, while eliminating unnecessary movement.

The new A-dec 400 is also designed with well-placed mounting
locations for the delivery system
and support-side modules. Therefore, doctors are able to Radiusmount a monitor, light, control, cuspidor, and assistant’s arm. The
front-mounting location offers flexibility for limited space, while also
providing excellent ergonomics for
operators who prefer side delivery.
Aside from mounting locations,
doctors are able to choose from Adec’s three dental light offerings
and specify factory-installed ancillaries that can be integrated into
the delivery system and pre-wired
for the touchpad controls.
The structure of the new chair
exceeds industry standards for
strength, rated for a 400-lb. maximum patient load, A-dec said. In addition, the new armrest design
gives patients a particularly
sturdy and secure grab point. For
customisable styling, doctors can
choose between sleek seamless
upholstery and plush sewn upholstery. A-dec’s wide range of designer colour options lend themselves to the A-dec 400 chair’s contemporary aesthetic and robust
design elements.

Stockholm awaits to excite visitors of Swedental
The City of Stockholm is often
identified as one of the world’s
most exciting urban areas.
Strengthening its position as the
most attractive city in Scandinavia
for business travellers and
tourists, the city has set another

achievement in 2012 with over
10,5 million overnight stays in commercial forms of accommodation.
Foreign visitors accounted for one
third of these stays with people
from Germany, Britain, the USA
and Norway topping the list.

The city indeed attracts today an
intercontinental set of visitors, who

est sense, both contemporary and
traditional, has been and is an important part of the city’s lifestyle.
Many of the Swedish and international brand stores can be found in
Stockholm’s oldest department
store PUB. For those interested
modern interior design, stores such
as Asplund and Nordiska Galleriet,
as well as shops that offer classic
Swedish design and furniture like
Svenskt Tenn with Josef Frank textiles are the places to be. The best of
Sweden’s famous crystal can be
found at Orrefors/Kosta Boda’s concept store and Nordiska Kristall,
among other places. For food lovers,
the markets and food halls at Hötorgshallen and Östermalmshallen
are must-see destinations. The
Östermalm district is also home to
Stockholm’s most exclusive antiques precinct, with fine art, crafts
and classic design from several centuries. The large auction houses are
also here, and viewings as well as
auctions are big events in autumn
and spring.
Stockholm has always been an
important centre for commerce
and trade. The city originally rose
to prominence as member of the
Hanseatic League with strong economic and cultural ties to prosperous cities like Hamburg, Danzig,
Reval, modern-day Tallinn and
Riga. The earliest mention of Stockholm in writing dates back to 1252,
when the mines in Bergslagen
made it an important site in the
iron trade. It is also said to have
been founded by Birger Jarl, in order to protect Sweden from sea invasion by foreign navies, and to
stop the pillage of towns such as
Sigtuna on Lake Mälaren. In Norse
sagas, the location appears as Agnafit, named after legendary king
Agne, who gained glory in the Finish wars, but was betrayed and
hanged by his wife Skjalf for having killed her father.
Parts of the city’s history are
preserved in the Old Town (Gamla
Stan) and the tiny adjacent island
of Riddarholmen. The Royal Palace
is standing there serving as offices
for the Royal family and is used by
the king to perform his duties as
Sweden’s head of state. It has 609
rooms and is one of the largest
royal palaces in the world that is
still in use for its original purpose.
Unlike the Buckingham Palace in
London, the Royal Palace is open to
the public and hosts a selection of
museums like the Royal Armoury

south of the Södermalm district in
Stockholm.

The Old Town is also home to the
Nobel Museum (Nobelmuseet) and
the House of Nobility (Riddarhuset). From there, it is a beautiful walk to the picturesque street,
Fjällgatan, over in the Södermalm
(Söder) district, a separate island
with stunning views across the
city. It is also called SOFO similar to
the famous SOHO districts in London and New York, has become
home to entrepreneurs that have
developed new types of shopping
experiences by combining fashion,
design, cafés and galleries, all in
the same place. Today, many of
Sweden’s talented young fashion
and product designers are represented with their own stores.

There are also towns nearby
of particular historical and cultural interest, such as Uppsala,
Strängnäs and Sigtuna, and idyllic
communities like Trosa, Norrtälje,
Vaxholm and Mariefred with
Gripsholm Castle, one of the most
impressive monuments to Sweden’s period as a superpower in the
17th century.

Stockholm is built on many islands and there are lots of bridges
and water. On one side of the city is
the Baltic and on the other is Lake
Mälaren. Unlike most European
capitals, Stockholm makes it easy
for you to combine big-city life with
countryside excursions and adventures of every possible kind, even
during a brief visit. On all sides, the
city is surrounded by pristine natural environments and interesting
cultural landscapes. Within half an
hour by public transport, visitors
can access places of great beauty,
devoid of all signs of city life. Kungliga Djurgården is such an island
consisting mainly of parkland, with
enough to keep visitors busy for
days. There is Skansen, for instance, an open-air museum presenting historical Sweden, and the
Vasa Museum that exhibits the remains of warship Vasa, which sank
in Stockholm on her maiden voyage
in 1628. Until today, the ship is one
of Sweden’s most popular tourist attractions and, as of 2007, has attracted more than 25 million visitors.
Most unique and spectacular of
all is the Stockholm Archipelago—
a vast, fan shaped maritime world
of more than 30,000 islands, of
which only about a thousand are
inhabited. In the summer, it is a paradise for sailors and other boaters
from all over northern Europe, but
it is also accessible to visitors travelling by public transport.
The selection of day trips is outstanding. An hour by bus, local
train or car will take one to any of
the several island communities.
From Stockholm city centre, you
can take both short or long journeys by boat to see a small part of
the Archipelago and some of the islands.
A different option is to depart
from central Stockholm on one of
the classic white ferries, many from
the 19th and early 20th centuries,
and instead of going into the Archipelago and the Baltic, you can go
into Lake Mälaren. Both the Drottningholm Palace, home of the Royal
family, with its a famous park and
theatre and the remnants of the
Viking settlement at Birka on the island of Björkö, are located in Lake
Mälaren. They are also both on the
UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
Another UNESCO World Heritage destination is Skogskyrkogår-

Skeppsholmen is another centrally located island that is rich in
art and culture. It features the Modern Museum (Moderna museet),
one of the world’s foremost museums for 20th century art, with the
Swedish Museum of Architecture
(Arkitekturmuseet) in the same
building, not to mention the extraordinary Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities (Ostasiatiska
museet). The adjacent island,
Blasieholmen, has Nationalmuseum (the National Museum), with

its first rate collection of Scandinavian and European painting and
sculpture and a permanent exhibition of Swedish design. To the west,
rising above the water is Stockholm’s iconic Stadshuset (City
Hall), venue for the Nobel Banquet,
which takes place on 10 December
every year.
On Djurgården, younger visitors will love Junibacken with its
storybook worlds by the children’s
author, Astrid Lindgren. Thielska

Galleriet (the Thielska Gallery)
and Prince Eugen’s Waldermarsudde are two outstanding art museums, housed in former private
palaces and famous for their collections of Scandinavian paintings
and sculptures from the period
around 1900. The imposing Nordic
Museum (Nordiska museet), often
mistaken by visitors for the Royal
Palace, is another leading international museum for Scandinavian
culture and history. All three museums are situated on Djurgården.
