(Photo/today Staff file photo) 5 Make plans to attend the Toothfairy Gala in June n After so much time apart, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 21st Annual Toothfairy Gala and BC Dental Association Awards is bringing everyone together for a celebration this June. The event will take place Saturday, June 11, at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. It will begin with a champagne reception at 6 p.m., followed by a fourcourse dinner, complemented by a selection of fine wines, at 7 p.m. The annual Toothfairy Gala includes an award ceremony to honour the accomplishments of dentists throughout the province while also featuring fundraising initiatives in support of Save a Smile (SAS). Since 1991, the SAS program has been supporting BC children in need of urgent dental care. SAS is a community-based direct care program that works in partnership with dental public health staff across BC to assist children from low-income families. In addition to providing urgent treatment through private practice dentists, dental public health staff also provide parent education to prevent dental problems from recurring. Net proceeds from the Toothfairy Gala are the main source of funding for SAS. This event along with annual contributions from BC dentists support the SAS program fund in partnership with the Alec Gunning Save a Smile Endowment Fund, which was established by the estate of Dr. Alec Gunning, a Victoria dentist who believed strongly in early dental care for young children. The Toothfairy Gala fundraising activities include a silent auction and a cake auction. To learn more or to purchase tickets, visit www.pdconf.com/tfg2022. Championed by CDHA and sponsored by SENSODYNE, the Dental Hygiene Superhero competition runs until May 17 and celebrates dental hygienists who educate and empower their clients to embrace the “oral health for total health” motto. “The superhero competition is a great way to share your experiences with us and to recognize the impact your dental hygienist has had on PDC from page 1 7 log in with the same user name and password. The dozens of virtual sessions are divided into three categories: Practice excellence, clinical excellence and personal development. There are many educational offerings to choose from. Among them are “Cannabis, Opioids, Dentistry,” presented by Clifford Pau, which covers the pharmacology of cannabis, methods of recreational consumption and clinical considerations. This session also explores the mechanism of pain, the efficacy of opioid as an analgesic and alternative therapeutic choices. “Emerging & Re-emerging Diseases: Pathogens Don’t Sleep,” presented by Nancy Dewhirst, explores resistant pathogens, biofilm diseases and pathogens with pandemic potential. Attendees will learn how to find weak links in dental safety techniques and About CDHA your oral and overall health,” says Wendy Stewart, CDHA president. “As a dental hygienist, I am always so proud to hear stories about how dental hygienists make differences in people’s lives.” During the past four years, more than 3,200 dental hygienists have been nominated by employers, clients or colleagues. In 2022, the organization hopes to exceed 2021’s 778 nominations. Nominees are evaluated on their client focus, empowerment through education, accountability, leadership, integrity, respect and compassion. Nominate your dental hygienist superhero at www.dentalhygiene canada.ca/healthcaresuperhero. CDHA is the collective national voice of more than 30,200 dental hygienists in Canada, directly representing 21,000 individual members, including students. Since 1963, CDHA has worked to advance the profession and promote the importance of oral health. Dental hygiene is the sixth largest regulated health profession in Canada with professionals working in a variety of settings, including independent dental hygiene practice, with people of all ages, addressing issues related to oral health. For more information on oral health, visit www.dentalhygiene canada.ca. compare options to prepare, manage and respond to exposures. “Offensive Dentistry,” presented by Brian Novy, is about caries risk assessment. Now that oral healthcare is armed with salivary diagnostics and bioactive materials, it’s time to rethink strategies, Novy explains. One of the meeting’s biggest educational highlights is a live, handson virtual course, “Performing Predictable Endodontic Treatment With Protaper Ultimate,” presented by Dr. Gary Glassman on April 1 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. PST. This course, which unlike the others is available only on the date and time specified, addresses breakthrough concepts. It details the skills necessary for acquiring the expertise and confidence to perform the highest quality endodontics while focusing on dentin preservation. Participants will become familiar with the use of the “apex last” approach to canal shaping using Pro- taper Ultimate, a new rotary nickeltitanium instrumentation system available from Dentsply Sirona, cosponsor of the event. In addition to the many educational offerings, there are also fun things to do on the PDC Virtual website. “Gamification” is an online scavenger hunt. Codes are hidden throughout the virtual event platform and in social media posts, and you also earn points for every session check-in form you complete. Enter the codes you find into the gamification tab, collect points and choose from a collection of prizes. A personalized “virtual swag bag” from PDC’s virtual exhibitors is being delivered to each registered attendee’s email inbox. Each content card includes an exclusive discount or offer from a participating company. You’re also invited to participate in PDC’s virtual photo booth, located in the online lobby. To participate, simply take a picture and share it. Consistency in action is just what it sounds like. Do the same thing every time, no matter what the circumstances surrounding that action might suggest otherwise. Some call it being steadfast, others stubborn, but consistency in action alone misses the mark. Consistency in motivation, however, is what separates leaders in orthodontics from those left wondering why the world changed around them. As computing technology and AI capabilities change the dental industry — just as they have changed nearly every industry we interact with — the people and organizations committed to motivational consistency have evolved along with it. Limiting what has changed about dentistry to the past two years is During the PDC Virtual To learn more about DentalMonitoring, stop by the booth in the virtual exhibit hall or go online to dental-monitoring. com. (Photo/Provided by DentalMonitoring) 5 to miss the point: The industry was always going to change, even as recent changes were made out of necessity. Remote monitoring technology has advanced to the point where dental professionals can reliably trust smartphones and capable monitoring software to expand their practices beyond what was conventionally fea- sible. With advanced remote monitoring comes the possibility for practices and organizations to adjust how they provide care for their patients, offering better treatment experience and more touch points for the provider, without sacrificing consistency in their motivation to treat patients effectively and to keep their practice healthy. Without question, the change being made today by leading providers will reshape what it means to provide care to patients in the most effective, convenient and practical manner possible. Before remote monitoring solutions were available, it was Keep your chin up and neck straight with Infinity VUE By Designs for Vision Staff n Designs for Vision has several new and innovative products, including the Infinity VUE, Panoramic Field and REVEAL. Designed to provide a straightforward approach to ergonomics, Infinity VUE loupes are available from Designs for Vision in 3.0x and 3.5x magnification. Infinity VUE (Vision Up Ergonomics) keeps your chin up, your neck straight and your eyes forward while viewing the magnified oral cavity. You need to try these loupes on to see (and feel) the difference in your posture. During the PDC Virtual You can see the Visible Difference yourself by visiting Designs for Vision in the virtual exhibit hall, or you can contact the company to arrange a visit in your office at (800) 345-4009 or info@ dvimail.com. The new patented Panoramic Field Loupes (US pat. 8928975B2) represent the most significant advancement in telescope design in more than 100 years, according to the company. The viewable areas are twice as large as prismatic expanded field designed loupes and up to five times greater inconceivable to monitor a patient’s clear aligner or braces treatment every single week — but now it is, and patients can enjoy the benefit of making only necessary in-practice visits while providers can leverage the optimized chair time in any way they see fit. For some, that might mean bringing on more patients. For others, it might mean reducing time in office without having to take on fewer patients. But for all, it means leveraging technology to reaffirm their motivation for why they began a profession in dental care. To be consistent is a question of why, not how. And when paired with a digital solutions partner committed to always finding how to best leverage emerging technologies for the betterment of dental practices, there’s only one question left to ask: Where will DentalMonitoring take your practice? Infinity VUE loupes, one of many innovations from Designs for Vision, are designed to help improve posture. (Photo/ Provided by Designs for Vision) 3 than Galilean loupes. Panoramic Field loupes provide unprecedented field of view, clarity, definition and color. Designs for Vision is also offering REVEAL (US pat. 10215977B1), which provides hands-free and fluorescence-enhanced theragnosis (FET). REVEAL supplies the visual information to support decision making and facilitate proper treatment options in cariology, oral hygiene, periodontology-implantology and restorative dentistry. Another Designs for Vision product is the patented (US pat. 8,851,709 & RE46,463) intuitive response tech- nology of the Micro IR HDi headlight. The patented IR feature allows you to operate the headlight with handsfree operation. Onboard biometrics sense the position of the headlight to turn the light on when you are working and turn the light off when you look up. Designs for Vision’s WireLess headlights free you from being tethered to a battery pack. The simple modular designs uncouple the headlights from a specific frame or single pair of loupes.
