Digital photography plays a key role in documenting treatments. With the right camera in their hands, team members can help increase the patient’s acceptance and practice’s profitability. The EyeSpecial C-III camera from Shofu captures stellar images for case documentation, diagnosis and treatment planning, patient communica- tion and education. Equipped with dental-specific, pre-programmed shooting modes, the EyeSpecial C-III enables clinicians and their team members to efficiently navigate through photography tasks without the need of extensive photography experience. For instance, in order to achieve orthodontic photographs with Shofu’s camera, the operator will select a button corresponding to FACE MODE to capture extraoral images. In a similar fashion, an operator will choose STANDARD MODE to capture anterior and buccal intraoral photographs, and MIRROR MODE to accomplish the occlusal pictures. Here in Toronto For an EyeSpecial demonstration and to learn how it can improve communication with your dental laboratory and patients, visit Shofu in booth No. 419. For every step of an orthodontic photo series, the EyeSpecial C-III will automatically set the appropriate f-stop, aperture and focal length to deliver an ideal photograph, leaving the camera’s operator to simply select a suitable mode. Incorporating intuitive functions tailored specifically for dentistry, the EyeSpecial C-III is designed to handle clinical applica- tions without requiring retrofitted add-ons. When combined with a draw/edit function, which allows for making notes directly on images, this attribute is of an immense value for an effective treatment evaluation or a discussion about the progress or challenges associated with the modality. Engineered to provide functionality, the ultralight (weighing ca. 1lb) EyeSpecial C-III complies with infection control protocols. By Tricia Osuna, RDH, BSDH, FAADH n As the dental profession has come to realize that undiagnosed and untreated injuries caused by ergonomically unsound practices are often the cause of physical pain and early retirement, there have been numerous strategies employed to prevent such injuries. Today’s dental professionals are trained to provide dental therapy in a seated position, which varies from earlier training that allowed for standing only. The incidence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among dental professionals has increased noticeably in recent years. Because dental treatments often involve working in awkward positions and holding those positions for extended periods of time, many MSDs, especially those involving the neck and shoulders, result from what is known as Prolonged Static Posture (PSP). In addition, the application of a high percentage of Maximum Voluntary Contraction (MVC) of muscles required for many procedures also contributes greatly to the high incidence of MSDs. To address these problems, such things as improved lighting, magnification and chairs that support proper posture have been introduced. Now, another technology, free motion elbow supports, has emerged to add to the resources available to protect us. Free-motion elbow supports encourage proper working posture and enable you to work from an ergonomically optimal position. They are a key component in the reduction of work-related musculoskeletal disorders of the back, shoulders and neck among dental professionals. And because this support is applied at the elbow, it also enables you to avoid the excessive wrist flexion that frequently leads to carpal tunnel syndrome, which can be a serious deterrent to the success of your career. Look to the science A comprehensive study published by ASSTSAS1 used electromyography (EMG) to measure the actual amount of force exerted during the performance of key dental activities. The study measured hygienists’ levels of stress when performing under their normal working conditions and using equipment, postures and techniques they had become accustomed to. The study found that even when ideal posture was maintained during work, significant muscle stress was observed without the use of freemotion elbow supports. It then followed up those results by testing the same group of hygienists after they had been retrained and provided with seating that made use of gel-padded free-motion elbow supports to reduce specific types of stress. The results of this study demonstrate that a combination of changes in work habits and posture, coupled with the use of seating equipped with freemotion elbow supports, significantly reduces the stress of PSPs and the percentage of MVC of muscles required to perform dental work. Because the study used EMG devices attached to its subjects to directly measure the stress exerted on specific muscles during the performance of dental tasks, it provides direct evidence based on physiological measurements rather than questionnaires and observation alone in support of its conclusions about the best ways to dramatically reduce MSDs and their associated negative consequences. Consider Posiflex Design Dental professionals should strongly consider acquiring and using the freemotion elbow supports as part of their normal work procedure. If the dental practice is considering the purchase of new operator’s chairs, such movable supports are available on chairs manufactured by Posiflex Design. If operators are currently using satisfactory seating that provides adjustable lumbar support and a seat that can be tilted to the ideal angle, or if no plans to procure other new seating are imminent, then the freemotion elbow supports can be purchased separately and installed on any make or model of operator’s chair. Ask your local dealer. For more information on Posiflex free-motion elbow supports, you can visit the company at booth No. 903 on the ASM18 exhibit floor, or telephone the company at (888) 767-4353. Next-generation laser enables new procedures, reduces complications Restoring a fixedbridge abutment with advanced endo/perio bone destruction using TwinLight periodontal and PIPS endodontic treatment Fig. 1 By Steven Abernathy, DDS Jonesboro, Ark. n Periodontal tissue regeneration has been demonstrated to be promoted either when the Nd:YAG laser or Er:YAG laser is being used individually as an adjunct to mechanical therapy. The same or presumably even better result is expected when both laser therapies are performed in combination using the TwinLight® protocol. My clinical experience confirms this conclusion: Bone regeneration is observed as one of the positive outcomes of the LightWalker ® laser TwinLight treatment. In this paper, I report on one of my more difficult cases, in which the periodontal TwinLight laser treatment was additionally combined in tandem with the endodontic PIPS® laser treatment, both exclusively available with the LightWalker dental laser. Radiographs taken before and three-years post-op demonstrate significant bone regeneration. My clinical experience confirms the conclusion of a recently published five-year retrospective study that concluded that bone regeneration is observed as one of the positive outcomes of the TwinLight treatment. The tooth was the distal abutment of a four-unit fixed partial denture. The patient’s chief complaint was soreness to chewing pressure and a chronic dull ache on the left side of his jaw. A single appointment of 1.5 hours included PIPS laser endo, TwinLight periodontal treatment and bridge repair. Fig. 3 Conclusion It is the author’s contention that the success of this case can be attributed largely to the gentle nature of the TwinLight and PIPS treatments available in tandem with the Fotona LightWalker laser. Traditional root-canal treatments and periodontal surgery both create a great deal of mechanical stress on the periodontium as endodontic instruments engage dentin within the canals, and scalers and ultrasonic instruments debride and root plane the diseased cementum. Laser energy does not create mechanical stress, and its bactericidal nature as it works within the canals and on the perio defect is an additional benefit. The radiographs taken before and three-years post-op demonstrate significant bone regeneration following the combined TwinLight laser periodontal treatment.[11] => [12] => [13] => [14] => exhibitors 14 2018 ASM — April 27, 2018 Position yourself for life with ExamVision loupes, lights By SYNCA Staff n Surprisingly, not all loupes are designed and manufactured for equal ergonomic benefits. Senior Myobrace Educator Jessica Maidman notes that ‘Children respond much better to learning from new and interesting technologies.’ The Myobrace Activities App is available on multiple platforms. (Image/Myofunctional Research) Technology changing patient education n Technological advancements are perpetual catalysts for changes that continue to transform the way we operate on a daily basis. For progressive practitioners, the constant wave of new technology provides an auspicious opportunity to increase prosperity and experience substantial benefits in other areas. For decades, dental practitioners have been pigeonholed to tediously repetitious practices such as the monotonous treatment of caries and removal of plaque buildup. Despite this, the prevalence of malocclusion in modern children is approaching 100 percent and this growing incidence is enabling dentists to widen their scope of practice with the prospect of providing biological-based orthodontic treatment for children. Additionally, the recognition of sleep-related breathing disorders in dental patients is increas- ing, with recent research finding a relationship between the prevalence of malocclusion and dysfunctional breathing.1 With this in mind, practitioners looking to diversify their pediatric treatment options in the increasingly competitive market that is modern dentistry should consider the benefits modern technology can offer. The implementation of eLearning tools in North American classrooms has produced a generation of students that feels comfortable using screen-based technology for self-directed learning and is appreciative of the low-pressure environment it offers. Senior Myobrace Educator Jessica Maidman is an advocate for patient education through the use of digital learning tools, and she considers the patient’s first encounter with The Myobrace® System an important stepping stone for 5 ongoing education and compliance. “As an educator, I use our Myobrace apps to deliver information to my patient in a child-friendly manner. It helps them understand the causes of their developmental issues, as well as the need for early intervention and corrective treatment,” Maidman said. “I have learned that children respond much better to learning from new and interesting technologies rather than an authoritative figure such as a dentist. The results are much more consistent because the information is being delivered the same way each and every time.” Myofunctional Research Co. (MRC) provides eLearning software in all major digital platforms, enabling simple implementation for almost any practice. Taking advantage of these modern technologies enables any practice to transform into a tech-savvy environment that has an edge over competitors. MRC regularly hosts seminars that provide practitioners with hands-on experience in learning new myofunctional techniques for the treatment of malocclusion, dysfunctional breathing and TMJ disorders as well as the implementation of eLearning tools in almost any practice.
