CT scan of the jaw by selecting onscreen and then tracing three of the
patient’s teeth or other structures (such
as braces or abutments). It’s all done in

n Two years ago, in honour of the
Ontario Dental Association’s 150th
anniversary, the association created
a website detailing the fascinating
and, sometimes alarming, history of
dentistry in Ontario.
Now, as the ODA marks its 152nd
year, the site remains active — and as
interesting as ever.
Did you know anyone, regardless
of training, could call themselves a
dentist? Or that it was common for
the local blacksmith to yank people’s
teeth out? How about that toothpaste
used to be made with sugar? You can
find all sorts of interesting facts in the
evolution of dentistry in Ontario at
https://150.oda.ca.
When the website launched, then
ODA President Dr. Jack McLister said,
“For the past 150 years, Ontario dentists have been committed to educating the public on oral hygiene and
advocating for access to dental care
for everyone in the province. Like
Canada, dentistry has evolved and
progressed tremendously over that
time and the ODA and its members
had a defining role in shaping the dental care standards we enjoy today.”

ODA: Seniors’ dental plan falls short
Ontario’s plan could send seniors into government-run dental facilities for care
n
For years, the Ontario Dental
Association has made it clear that it
wants to work with the province to
make sure Ontarians get the proper
dental care they need. The seniors’
dental plan described in the recent
provincial budget falls short of that
on substance and details.
While the ODA believes there
should be a dental program for Ontario’s low-income seniors, the suggestion from the province appears to be
that seniors should be forced to leave
their current dentist and travel, sometimes long distances, to get treatment
at a government-run institution with
a dental team they don’t know and
who doesn’t know their dental and
medical history.
The budget also doesn’t address
the ongoing issue of the severe funding gap in existing public dental care
programs. The fact is, there are currently four major programs for vulAD
nerable Ontarians (children, families,
people with disabilities, and those
with complex medical conditions)
and none of them are funded properly.
ODA President Dr. David Stevenson said, “Ontario’s dentists have
been working hard to find a funding
solution with the province. Quite
frankly, this government knows dentists are reaching the breaking point
and we are disappointed at this
missed opportunity.”
The ODA is asking the province to
work with it to find solutions for all
government dental care programs so
that we can meet the needs of Ontario’s low-income families and seniors
in a way that works best for them.

The 49th International Dental
Days of Quebec (Journées dentaires
internationales du Québec — JDIQ),
the annual conference of the Ordre
des Dentistes du Québec, will be from
May 25–28 (Saturday through Tuesday) at the Montréal Convention Center
(the Palais des Congrès de Montréal)
in Montréal, Quebec, near the heart
of the old-world charm of historic Old
Montréal.
The annual C.E. and exhibition
event is the annual meeting place for
Quebec dentists and dental-team members, while also attracting attendees
from across the world. With more than
12,000 participants, it is considered the
largest dental conference in Canada.

Dentistes du Québec, representing
approximately 5,300 dentists, is to
ensure the quality of dental services
through high standards of practice
and ethics and to promote oral health
among the people of Quebec.
The C.E. courses feature theoretical
and practical training presented by
renowned speakers from Canada and
around the world. The courses and
workshops focus on topics related to
dental practice, as well as the technical
and scientific advancements that influence the current and future practice of
dentistry.
The meeting’s two-day exhibit
hall will be on Monday and Tuesday,
May 27-28.
JDIQ 2019 marks the third edition
of the CÉLABration event. In collaboration with the Order of Dental Technicians of Quebec, the CÉLABration
meeting provides a full day of sessions
and clinical tables, as well as an exhib-
ition featuring specialized products
and services.
