Getting back to dental
hygiene during the pandemic
By Canadian Dental Hygienists
Association Staff
n
According to a national poll
conducted by Abacus Data for the
Canadian Dental Hygienists Association (CDHA), many Canadians have
delayed professional dental hygiene
care since the COVID-19 pandemic
began.
The poll of 2,000 adults, conducted
between Jan. 15 and 18, revealed that
only four in 10 Canadians have seen
their dental hygienist since March
2020. Thirty-seven percent of those
who haven’t received dental care said
they were deferring all non-essential
appointments; 32 percent were hesitant about the safety of professional
dental hygiene care during the pandemic. The poll has a margin of error
of plus/minus 2.17 percent, 19 times
out of 20.

“These results are concerning,
given how important oral health is to
overall health and well-being,” says
Tiffany Ludwicki, president of CDHA.
“Poor oral health affects our ability to
eat, laugh, speak and smile, and is a
risk factor for serious health complications such as diabetes, respiratory and

heart diseases and stroke.”
As essential primary health care
providers, dental hygienists play a
vital role in preventing and detecting
oral health problems. They examine
your head, neck and mouth at every
dental hygiene appointment, make
referrals when necessary and work
with you to develop individualized
professional and at-home oral care
plans.
Of those poll respondents who have
seen their dental hygienist since last
March, an overwhelming majority

(nine in 10) agree they felt safe during
their appointments and enjoyed the
same level of care or higher.
“Dental and dental hygiene offices
implement strict infection prevention
and control practices,” Ludwicki said.
“Canadians of all ages can rest assured

extremely safe. Dental hygienists are
committed to maintaining a healthy

At last count, there were more than
75 exhibitors in the virtual exhibit
hall, all waiting for you to join them.
Earn 1 C.E. credit by visiting booths

are Eastern).
Access to the exhibit hall will continue through May 31. (If you haven’t
yet registered for the conference, you
can also do that until May 31 at asm.
oda.ca/registration-info/.) You will be
able to use the chat feature as well
from May 8 to 31, but please allow 24

During the live hours, companies
will have staff on hand to answer your
questions.
During this virtual meeting, networking might even be more accessible than an in-person meeting.
Instead of tracking down an exhibitor
or representative in a large convention centre, virtual attendees will
have many opportunities for direct

communication, instant messaging
and impromptu conversations at the
click of a button.
As an extra incentive, many companies are offering a variety of show
specials to ASM21 attendees. Be sure
to click on the Attendee Swag Bag in

deciding where to start upon entering the exhibit floor, here are a few
highlights:
• Air Techniques has a new VentLess Vacuum System series featuring
the Mojave Vent-Less and VacStar
Vent-Less systems. These dental vacuum exhaust air filtration models are
ideal for high-rise buildings, current
offices without vents and any office
that wants to upgrade its vacuum system. Each model has a medical-grade
ULPA filter with a 99.995 percent
retention rate, ensuring it’s safe to

exhaust directly into the mechanical
room.
• Align Technology is featuring
the iTero Element Plus Series, which
expands the company’s portfolio of
iTero Element scanners and imaging
systems to include new solutions that
serve a broader range of the dental
market. The new iTero Element Plus
Series of scanners and imaging systems builds on the success of the
award-winning iTero Element family
and offers all of the existing orthodontic and restorative digital capabilities doctors have come to rely on. It
is available in both cart and mobile

Study: OPTIM 1 Wipes are the only product to
remain wet long enough to meet contact time
By COLTENE SciCan staff
n COLTENE SciCan’s OPTIM 1 is one
of the fastest and most effective onestep cleaner disinfectants and has a
one-minute broad-spectrum contact
time, according to the company.
OPTIM 1 Wipes have excellent wetness, the company asserts, ensuring
complete and fully compliant disinfection with each application. A study
evaluated the length of time surfaces
remain wet after application of different disinfectants commonly used
in dental practices: OPTIM 1 was the
only product that remained wet long
enough to meet its contact time.1
In fact, according to the study,
OPTIM 1 Wipes covered twice as
much surface area compared to leading competitors — saving users time
and money.

What’s ‘contact time’?

Disinfectant product labels indicate
specific contact times — the length
of time disinfectant solution must
be in contact with the target surface
(i.e., keep the surface wet) in order
to achieve the desired disinfection
efficacy.

What’s ‘dry time’?

It’s the time it takes for a disinfectant
to fully dry and/or evaporate on a
surface. A disinfectant’s contact time
should be faster than its dry time. If
a disinfectant evaporates before its
contact time has elapsed, the surface
has not been fully disinfected. That
means, the disinfectant dried up
before it could kill and inactivate the
pathogens on the surface.
When faced with a fast-drying
disinfectant, to ensure the surface is
wet until the contact time is achieved,
users need to wipe the surface down
again as soon as it dries up.
In today’s busy dental practices,
users typically apply a disinfectant
and let it air dry as they move on to
other tasks. They don’t have time to
watch it dry and use a second wipe.
Don’t waste another minute.
