n The last time the Ontario Dental
Association held its Annual Spring
Meeting, back in 2019, the world was
a different place. So it’s fitting that
this year’s meeting, ASM21, comes
equipped to help attendees deal with
the changes in the world and the
profession while also changing the
format of the meeting itself.
For the first time, the ASM will be
all virtual, marking a different look
and feel on the surface. What will

Spend the morning with bestselling author Amanda Lindhout

n Kicking off the Ontario Dental
Association’s Annual Spring Meeting at 8 a.m. Thursday is a keynote
address you won’t soon forget.
As a child, New York Times bestselling author Amanda Lindhout escaped
a violent household by paging through
issues of National Geographic and
imagining herself visiting its exotic
locales.
At age 19, working as a cocktail
waitress, she began saving her tips so
she could travel the globe. Aspiring to
understand the world and live a significant life, she backpacked through
Latin America, Laos, Bangladesh and
India, and emboldened by each adventure, she went on to Sudan, Syria and
Pakistan.
In Afghanistan and Iraq, she carved

help recognize, for the fourth year
in a row, dental hygiene health care
superheroes in communities across
Canada.
Championed by CDHA and sponsored by Sensodyne®, the Dental
Hygiene Superhero competition,
which runs until May 11, celebrates
dental hygienists who educate and
empower their clients to embrace the
“oral health for total health” motto.
“We want to recognize dental
hygienists who are ambassadors of
the profession and model exceptional
client care,” said Tiffany Ludwicki,
CDHA president.
Do you know a dental hygienist
who is focusing on oral health for
disease prevention and overall wellness?
“We want to hear your story about
the dental hygienist who is changing
lives every day with their commitment to improving oral and overall
health,” Ludwicki said.

at 8 a.m. (ET) and running through
Saturday (May 8), ASM21 also promises an improved online learning
platform, networking activities and

There are three different categories of educational sessions taking
place during the meeting. Category 1
(core) courses will be live during the
event and will not be on demand, but
all Category 2 and 3 courses and the
exhibit hall will be available after the
meeting, from May 10 to 31.

recent years, and the organization

Nominees will be evaluated on
their client focus, empowerment
through education, accountability,
leadership, integrity, respect and
compassion.

CDHA is the collective national
voice of 30,219 dental hygienists in
Canada, directly representing 20,000
members, including students. Since
1963, CDHA has worked to advance

the sixth largest regulated health profession in Canada with professionals
working in a variety of settings with
people of all ages.

response rate of four out of five questions (80 percent) within five minutes of the poll and an independent

Category 2 features all clinical
courses, while Category 3 includes
practice management and personal
development sessions.
The virtual exhibits floor also
offers an opportunity for earning C.E.
credits. You can receive one credit for
visiting during each of the dedicated
scheduled times on Thursday, May 6,
and Friday, May 7: 8 to 9:30 a.m., 12:30
to 2:30 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.
The virtual exhibits will have
show specials (be sure to click on
the Attendee Swag Bag in the navigation bar in order to access discount
coupons for use on the exhibits floor)
and company representatives ready
to greet you during the dedicated
exhibit hours via the chat feature in
each booth.
The virtual exhibits will remain
active after the show, from May 8
to 31. The chat function will also be
active, but please allow 24 hours for
an exhibitor to respond during those
dates.

an information desk in the meeting
lobby for show information. It can be

Study: OPTIM 1 Wipes cover twice as
much surface area as competitors

n COLTENE SciCan’s OPTIM 1 is one
of the fastest and most effective onestep cleaner disinfectants and has a
one-minute broad-spectrum contact
time, according to the company.
OPTIM 1 Wipes have excellent wetness, the company asserts, ensuring
complete and fully compliant disinfection with each application. A study
evaluated the length of time surfaces
remain wet after application of different disinfectants commonly used
in dental practices: OPTIM 1 was the
only product that remained wet long
enough to meet its contact time.1
In fact, according to the study,
OPTIM 1 Wipes covered twice as
much surface area compared to leading competitors — saving users time
and money.
What’s ‘contact time’?
Disinfectant product labels indicate
specific contact times — the length
of time disinfectant solution must
be in contact with the target surface
(i.e., keep the surface wet) in order
to achieve the desired disinfection
efficacy.
What’s ‘dry time’?
It’s the time it takes for a disinfectant
to fully dry and/or evaporate on a
surface. A disinfectant’s contact time
should be faster than its dry time. If
a disinfectant evaporates before its
contact time has elapsed, the surface
has not been fully disinfected. That
means, the disinfectant dried up
before it could kill and inactivate the
pathogens on the surface.
When faced with a fast-drying
disinfectant, to ensure the surface is
wet until the contact time is achieved,
users need to wipe the surface down
again as soon as it dries up.
In today’s busy dental practices,
users typically apply a disinfectant
and let it air dry as they move on to
other tasks. They don’t have time to
watch it dry and use a second wipe.
