From now until Saturday, you can reconnect with colleagues and partake in various educational opportunities. It’s all part of the Ontario Dental Association’s Annual Spring Meeting. There are more than 90 speakers on hand, who are presenting a wide range of clinical, practice-management and personal development topics. ODA members can receive up to 18 continuing education credits over the course of the meeting. And while you are on site at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, be sure to visit the exhibit hall because meeting organizers have incorporated numerous attractions that are designed to enhance your experience. Don’t delay, because the marketplace closes at 5:30 p.m. Friday. The hall features hundreds of exhibiting companies offering a wide range of dental products and services. You can watch demonstrations and even “test-drive” the latest innovations. Use the coupon book in your attendee bag to take advantage of a range of show specials. If you stop by the Healthly Eating Zone, located in booth No. 2212, you can savor a variety of food samplings presented by Emily Richards, a professional home economist, bestselling cookbook author and food stylist. Richards is known for creating healthy recipes that are easy for busy people and families to prepare and enjoy together around the kitchen table. The Ontario Dental Association’s Annual Spring Meeting is back this year at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. You can find most courses in the South Building, though you may need to trek to the North Building for some, thanks to an expanded course list. (Photo/Provided by Metro Toronto Convention Centre) 5 Stop by booth No. 346 to sign up for a complimentary assessment that will help you identify ergonomic issues in your practice. You can learn from experts who will equip you with the knowledge and tools to reduce pain and improve health and wellness in your practice. You might also want to stop by the Relaxation Zone, located in booth No. 2142, where you can get a complimentary, 10-minute neck-and-shoulder massage by a professional. This is one of the meeting’s most popular features, because it allows meeting attendees the chance to take time out to decompress and relax with some downtime. Definitely not to be missed is the Smoothie Bar, located in booth No. 2222, where you can get a healthy and refreshing smoothie for free. It gets even better. After you’ve been relaxed and satiated, you can then proceed to the Headshot Salon, in booth No. 1200, for a free professional headshot that you can use in your practice’s literature, website and on social media. Also be sure to check out the ODA Membership Booth, located on the 800 level, outside the show floor, where you can learn about the many ways that the ODA helps to expand your potential. ODA and Canadian Dental Association staff are on hand to answer your questions and ensure that you are getting the most out of your membership. You can learn about the CDSPI Member Assistance Program (MAP). While at the booth you can also reconnect with colleagues and friends, and you can chat with members of the Membership Services and Programs Advisory Committee. Most Canadians also give the current state of oral care for older adults and seniors a poor rating. The poll of 2,200 Canadian residents, conducted between Jan. 7 and 12, revealed that 88 percent would like to see oral health care incorporated into the federal government’s long-awaited national standards for long-term care homes. A majority (more than 50 percent) also recognize that seniors face many challenges when it comes to accessing professional oral health care. As essential primary health care providers, dental hygienists know seniors living in long-term care homes have many unmet oral health needs, which put their overall health at risk. (Photo/Provided by the CDHA) 5 “Untreated oral conditions and diseases can cause pain, discomfort, difficulties chewing and swallowing and are associated with heart and lung diseases, diabetes and stroke,” said CDHA President Wendy Stewart. “We simply cannot continue to ignore the oral health needs of this vulnerable population.” Among CDHA’s urgent recommendations for improving the lives of Canada’s 400,000 residents in long- term care are the addition of dental hygienists to staff care teams across the country. These dental hygienists would be responsible for developing comprehensive oral health care programs for residents as well as oral health education programs for workers. (Source: CDHA) Destination DM, and where your practice is taking you By DentalMonitoring Staff n There are two types of consistency: action and motivation. Consistency in action is just what it sounds like. Some call it being steadfast, others stubborn, but consistency in action alone misses the mark. Consistency in motivation, however, is what separates leaders in orthodontics from those left wondering why the world changed around them. As computing technology and AI capabilities change the dental industry, the people and organizations committed to motivational consistency have evolved along with it. Remote monitoring technology has advanced to the point where dental professionals can reliably trust smartphones and capable monitoring software to expand their practices beyond what was conventionally feasible. With advanced remote monitoring comes the possibility for practices and organizations to adjust how they President/Chief Executive Officer Eric Seid e.seid@dental-tribune.com Group Editor Kristine Colker k.colker@dental-tribune.com Product/Account Manager Humberto Estrada h.estrada@dental-tribune.com Product/Account Manager Maria Kaiser m.kaiser@dental-tribune.com Client Relations Coordinator Lee Colquhoun l.colquhoun@dental-tribune.com Accounting Department Nirmala Singh n.singh@dental-tribune.com Published by Tribune America © 2022 Tribune America, LLC All rights reserved. Without question, the change being made today by leading providers will reshape what it means to provide care to patients in the most effective, convenient and practical manner possible. Before remote monitoring solutions were available, it was inconceivable to monitor a patient’s clear aligner or braces treatment every single week — but now it is, and patients can enjoy the benefit of making only necessary in-practice visits while providers can leverage the optimized chair time in any way they see fit. To be consistent is a question of why, not how. And when paired with a digital solutions partner committed to always finding how to best leverage emerging technologies, there’s only one question left to ask: Where will DentalMonitoring take your practice? today Pacific Dental Conference appears during the Pacific Dental Conference, being held virtually, March 14 to April 12, 2022. According to a study by the University of Oulu in Finland, approximately one in two adults says they are at least somewhat afraid of dental care, and one in 10 says they are very afraid.1 People with dental anxiety are more likely to avoid, cancel or postpone appointments, which can lead to serious oral health consequences requiring more intense treatment or even emergency care. Whether your patients are children or adults, here are three tips to help patients with dental anxiety alleviate their fears: 1. Talk about it. Talk to your patients about their anxiety and what, specifically, they’re anxious about, so you can walk them through what’s going to happen and help them mentally prepare. Also, putting a positive spin on the appointment can help give them a sense of control and diminish their fear. Explain to patients that by getting good dental care now, they can avoid serious dental problems later. 2. Create a calming and friendly office environment. Offering a variety of reading materials in the waiting room, playing soothing music or videos in the treatment room and providing natural lighting can go a long way in easing dental angst. 3. Encourage them to practise good oral hygiene. Practising good oral hygiene helps prevent oral issues in the first place, which will result in not only better check-ups but also fewer follow-up appointments for treatment. At the touch of a button, your patients can switch from one mode to the other for a fast and thorough clean. Simple and easy to use, the SonicFusion 2.0: • Was up to 50 percent more effective for improving gum health vs. string flossing.2 • Removed up to 99.9 percent of plaque biofilm from treated areas.3 The Sonic-Fusion 2.0 is just one more way Waterpik is bringing innovation and simplicity to dental care — and helping to turn dental fear into dental vigilance so that instead of avoiding examinations, your patients will come for regular visits.
