 Foreign companies will have
greater representation in this
year’s International Dental Show
(IDS) in Cologne in Germany.
In addition to the United States,
which still bring the largest number of foreign-based exhibitors to
IDS, large contingents from Korea, Italy and Brazil have announced their participation. Morocco and Singapore are also participating for the first time.
The 33rd IDS will take place
from 24–28 March at the fairground in Cologne. Exhibitors
have announced the introduction of a number of new products
and services in growing sectors
like implantology and prophylaxis to an expected 80,000 visitors from Germany and abroad.
A new navigation system is supposed to help visitors find exactly
what they are looking for. Electronic tickets can still be purchased in advance from the
Koelnmesse online shop.

Prospects for IDS 2009 look promising, they agreed. According to
Dr Martin Rickert, chairman of
the Association of German Dental Manufacturers (VDDI), there

health care sector,” Rickert said
at a press conference in Cologne
in December. “Due to our experiences from the past years, we still

Germany, Japan, and the United States collectively dominated
the global dental supplies market, with over 80 per cent share
of sales in 2008. A recent report
by Global Industry Analysts, Inc.,

USA, has projected the overall market volume to exceed
US$21.8 billion by 2015. The demand for dental products and
services is predicted to remain
healthy due to a growing demand
in cosmetic treatments, new
products that reduce patient discomfort, increased health consciousness, and dental implants.
Growth in the conventional supplies category may be reduced
because of emerging procedures
and technologies that require
fewer supplies and materials.
Although differences exist
between dental markets, rapid
improvement of living standards
has recently induced greater
realisation about the quality
of medical and dental services
in countries such as India and
China. Consequently, these countries are exhibiting an increasing demand for modern and
sophisticated technology and
equipment.

Hybrid anatomy requires

TBR Group presents revolutionary Zirconia-Titanium implants
for better integration in soft and hard tissues
 Dental implants have to
manage a hybrid anatomy because they are replacements
of dental roots and need to integrate both in the hard tissues (bone) and soft tissues
(gingiva). Most of the dental
implants in the market nowadays are made of a single
material, although these two
kinds of issues require different materials. Therefore, the
TBR Group decided to rethink
the definition of a dental implant and to develop a hybrid
system to optimise both the
integration in bone tissue and
gingiva.
The result was the TBR Hybrid implant: a one-stage titanium implant with a zirconia

transgingiva collar. From a
mechanical point of view, this
technology combines the mechanical advantages of titanium in flexion and those of
zirconia in compression which
makes the TBR Hybrid implant system more resistant
than a regular titanium implant.

of studies and publicising

Show Preview IDS Cologne 2009

“IDS has always been a driving force behind the dental market”
Interview with Dr Martin Rickert, Chairman of the Association of German Dental Manufacturers (VDDI e.V.)
Prospects for the 33rd International Dental Show next
month look promising, representatives of the German dental industry have agreed. At
a recent press conference in
Cologne, they also rejected
fears of economic cutbacks due
to the ongoing financial crisis.
According to Dr Martin Rickert,
Chairman of the Association of
German Dental Manufacturers
(VDDI e.V.), there is still a steady
demand for medical and dental
services. Today Editor-in-Chief
Daniel Zimmermann spoke
with Dr Rickert about the current state of the industry and his
expectations for IDS Cologne
2009.
Daniel Zimmermann: Dr
Rickert, the economic valuation of the German dental
market in 2008 was fairly
positive. Has this changed
with the current financial
crisis?
Dr Rickert: Not really. As
you correctly point out, it is predominantly a financial crisis.
The industry’s outlook for 2008
was good and currently there is
a trend towards a stable return
which does not fulfil all our
expectations but still promises
to deliver satisfactory profits.
There are certainly fluctuations in various market segments and world markets that
stem from different influences
and are not attributable to a
single cause.
There have been initial
reports on redundancies in
the United States. Should we
be preparing for cutbacks
or restructuring measures
in Germany as well?
The US health sector differs
from that in Germany and in
most European countries and,
therefore, many private investors have been affected by
the financial crisis. Mass redundancies in key sectors
mean that many people can
no longer contribute towards
company health insurance
schemes in the US. This will
AD

definitely not be the case in
Germany because the statutory health insurance provider
and private health insurance
companies are prepared to
cover the healthcare costs for
their clients in the future. Even
if we are in for job losses in various economic sectors, there
are not likely to be any negative
effects on the German healthcare market.
What positive effects will
IDS have on the industry?
The 33rd IDS will again exhibit a comprehensive range
of modern dental products and
technologies. Visitors will be
able to see and experience an
abundance of new product and
service innovations. Technological developments in the
medical field and our industry’s investment in research
and development continually
produce new and improved
system solutions for dental
practices and laboratories,
which are of great financial interest to dentist and technician
alike.
IDS has always been a driving force behind the dental
market and will remain in this
role in the future. I expect our
partners—dentists, dental technicians, dental hygienists, and
prophylaxis assistants—to be
able to convince patients that
investing in their health is the
best way to secure their own
well-being and quality of life.
Investments in health are investments in one’s own future.
I am confident that despite the
current economic fluctuations
patients will not neglect their
oral health or decide not to
make use of necessary care and
treatment. Falling prices for energy, the commuter tax relief
refund, and private savings assets of around €10 trillion in
Germany ensure the liquidity
of a large portion of the population. Moreover, patients’ demands for health-related services are mostly governed by
acute health problems and the

desire for a return to health and
recuperating quality of life.
Dental implants and automated fabrication of dental
restorations are currently
the fastest growing sectors
in dentistry. Is this boom reflected in the products and
services that are going to be
presented at IDS?
Implant-borne restorations
are in fact one of the fastest
growing sectors, with more
than 700,000 dental implants
placed in Germany last year
and an annual growth-rate of
around 10 to 15 per cent. These
high-quality restorations will
continue to be in demand by

There is no doubt that Germany remains our key market.
It is here that the German dental industry researches and develops new products and services in collaboration with dental institutions at universities,
technical colleges, and training
schools (Meisterschulen). We
need this market in order to introduce products and services
in conjunction with healthcare
providers and users because,
with the high standard of
healthcare, dentistry and dental technology in our country,
these products and services
are considered models for dental practices and laboratories
worldwide.

funding of only 0.46 per cent
after 21 years.
In which markets has the
German dental industry
gained shares in 2008, and
which markets do you regard as difficult to gain access to?
The results of our latest
member questionnaire underline the fact that export figures
in East European markets, especially Russia, and Asian markets have shown a positive
trend. Furthermore, the economic outlook for Latin America has improved remarkably
in the last few months; however, it must be noted that

Dr Martin Rickert (left) speaks at the European press conference in December 2008. (DTI, Daniel Zimmermann)

many patients in the future because they are one of the most
progressive and long-lasting
restorations available. Incidentally, the growth in dental implants in Germany can largely
be attributed to the fact that
the statutory health insurance
scheme has subsidised this
treatment since the introduction of a fixed coverage system
in 2005. IDS will exhibit the entire range of modern implantology systems, presenting both
innovations and developments
in tried-and-tested systems.
What other sectors do you
view as having potential for
growth?
Apart from implantology,
I see the most potential in the
all-porcelain sector, in which
around 25 million restorations
worldwide were fabricated
using CAD/CAM technology.
Modern laser scanners are able
to read more than 100,000 reflecting points a second, and
image-capturing has become
quicker and more precise.
Modern high-performance materials provide the best possible stability for a wide range
of indications and are able to
guarantee biocompatibility at
the same time.
The latest digital fabrication
technology using laser metal
sintering of, mostly precious
metal-free, alloy powders can
now also be considered for
prosthetic restorations. These
dentures stand out because of
their incredibly precise fit and
durability.
German dental industry
export activities again increased by approximately
two per cent in 2007, which
comprises 55 per cent of the
total turnover. Is the domestic market losing its value?

The shift of sales is a result
of an expansion of our market
position overseas disproportionate to growth in the domestic market.
It is important to guarantee
dentists and dental technicians
in the German market acceptable remuneration for their
services. This is the only way to
ensure that young people find
their way into the health service, to prevent professional migration, and to ensure patients
gain access to the latest developments in general dentistry
and dental technology.
German patients have to
carry more medical expenses due to the introduction
of the national health fund.
Is this having an effect on
dentistry as well?
I expect not only an added
burden for the insured, but also
an increase in bureaucracy
that we will all have to tolerate. Calculations by a council
of experts for the national
health fund predict a shortfall
of €440 million in 2009 alone!
I think notable negative
effects are to be expected due
to the revamped dental practitioners’ fee schedule, which
is the new basis for private
dental billing in 2009. In their
calculations, the Association
of German Dentists has concluded that large cutbacks in
salaries could be the outcome
of these regulations. If one
considers that a significant
portion of the annual turnover
in many practices already
comes from patients who pay
out of their own pockets and
are, therefore, essential for
practices’ survival, one cannot
understand why the dental
profession should be content
with a slight increase in re-

growth development in this
market is still at a very low
level. A slight weakening in the
outlook for the North American market has been reported.
Regardless of this, the number
of members who predict an increase in business prospects
for the first half of 2009 is
higher than those who predict
a decline in business prospects.
On average, Western Europe
presents itself as a very stable
market environment and remains one of the most important sales regions for our members in terms of turnover. Onefifth of our members expect
an improvement in their profits within the first half of 2009
compared with the same period last year.
An increasing number of
companies from emerging
markets, such as India and
China, are beginning to gain
market shares. How do you
size up the competition?
It is important to remember
that IDS is also a global marketplace. These countries do not
necessarily come to Germany
to attend IDS, in order to compete in these highly developed
markets. For most companies,
markets in developing countries are of primary importance, as the world’s largest
dental marketplace is a meeting point for suppliers from developing countries and their
consumers from other developing countries. However, this
doesn’t mean they don’t have
anything to offer European consumers.
The German dental industry
has enjoyed an international
reputation as one of the most innovative dental industries. Our
exceptionally high standard of
quality, service-friendly prod-

ucts, and high level of innovation, as well as distinct customer orientation with a high
quality of service, make our
products globally competitive.
We confidently meet the challenge of all competition in any
market worldwide.
During the last two years
you have travelled abroad
to promote IDS in other regions. Can you tell us more
about perceptions of the
show in different parts of
the world?
IDS is THE international
meeting for the dental sector.
For years, it has been an established communication and
marketing platform for the international dental community. This recognition has not
changed very much, as was evident during our several international press conferences last
year held in collaboration with
Koelnmesse subsidiaries in
Japan, China, Russia, and the
United States. Participants consistently displayed much interest in and support for IDS.
We were also given credit for
the high quality of accommodation, careful organisation,
and the show’s international
character.
Only at IDS is such a comprehensive display of the international dentistry market presented—the complete spectrum
of dentistry and dental technology is available to be seen
and experienced. All products
and services that make the
work of dentists easier, help
them work economically, and
provide their patients with the
state-of-the-art in dental technology are available at the
show.
Unlike other international meetings, IDS seems to
grow in popularity each year.
In your opinion, what are
the main factors contributing towards this growth?
IDS has an appealing and
powerful concept that was developed in cooperation with
our partner Koelnmesse. In
particular, the sheer amount
of state-of-the-art innovations
makes IDS the most comprehensive dental exhibition and
one of the liveliest and most
significant marketplaces in the
dental world.
It is important that we plan
this growth carefully to keep
up with market demands. We
do not want the show to expand
too rapidly and possibly outgrow its market.
We already have a high level
of international participation
at IDS from both exhibitors and
visitors. The show is cosmopolitan, the standard of accommodation at the show is exceptionally high, and the efficient organisation behind the
show makes a visit to the show
easy.
Finally, the city of Cologne is
ideally situated in terms of public transport within Germany,
as well as to and from Europe
and the World.
Thank you very much for
the interview!

Global market
exceeds US$21
billion by 2015
The global market for dental supplies is projected to exceed US$21.8 billion by 2015,
a new report by Global Industry Analysts, USA, says.
Demand for dental products
and services remain healthy
due to growing incidence of
cosmetic treatment, new products that reduce patient discomfort, increased health consciousness and growing number of dental implants.
However, growth in the
conventional supplies category may be tempered due
to emerging procedures and
technologies that require fewer supplies and materials.

According to the report,
dental care markets vary
widely across different countries. Rapid growth in living
standards has induced greater realisation about the quality of medical and dental services in countries such as India and China. Consequently,
these countries are exhibiting
soaring demand for modern
and sophisticated technology
and equipment in the dental
market.
United States, Japan, and
Europe collectively dominate
the worldwide dental supplies market, with over 80 per
cent share of sales in 2008.

Most implants found
to be successful
 Dental implants are 98 per
cent successful and cause little
or no bone loss, according to
new research published in the
Journal of Oral Implantology.
Authors Zeev Ormianer, DMD,
and Ady Palty, DMD, reviewed
60 charts of patients who received a total of 267 implants
in two private dental practices
in Israel and Germany.
They found that 98.5 per cent
of the implants survived and
there was no discernable bone
loss in 88 per cent of the implant
sites. The mean follow-up time
was 7.5 years. The study goal
was to determine the level of
bone loss over time at the implant sites in the jaw. A key
clinical issue was not whether
bone loss would occur, but how
AD

much bone loss should be considered normal and acceptable.
Commenting on the findings,
Jamie Lozada, DDS, president
of the American Academy of
Implant Dentistry (AAID), said
the study adds to a growing
body of compelling clinical evidence supporting dental implants as the most successful
method for replacing missing
or compromised teeth.
“With an estimated two of
three Americans having at least
one missing tooth, implants are
becoming the preferred toothreplacement option. Implant
surgery is one of the safest, most
precise and predictable procedures in dentistry,” Lozada
said.

Men drive cosmetic trends
 According to the British
Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry
(BACD), more and more men are
opting for cosmetic dental treatment. Men, who used to account
for 28 per cent of all veneers, now
account for nearly a third of all
procedures. Similarly, men used
to account for less than a fifth
of all orthodontics. They now
represent almost a quarter, with
400 cases this year.
Bridges are another procedure
that has become more popular
with men, who used to account for
42 per cent and now are edging
ever closer to women at 46 per
cent. Overall, orthodontics (which
includes both visible ‘train track’
as well as invisible and removable
braces) has boomed in popularity,
with the number of cases more
than tripling since 2006.
Women are still the big

According to Dr James Goolnik, dentist and BACD board
member, “These results show
that men have become more accepting of cosmetic treatments in
general—reflecting the importance we now place on a healthy
smile. The advent of new procedures, such as the removable
adult braces and more realisticlooking veneers, which require
much less drilling, also means
people are less likely to choose
invasive and irreversible treatments.”
Dr David Bloom, dentist and
president of the BACD, added,
“This audit has highlighted some
very exciting trends, such as an
impressive increase in the number of orthodontic cases. This

Economic fears in the US affect dental care
 With the economy in the
United States declining, preventive dental care can be one of the
first things to go. The correlation
between rising unemployment
and a drop in preventive dental
care, however, is not necessarily
due to people being short of cash,
according to a study in the online edition of Health Services
Research.
The researchers analysed
10 years of information about
visits to dentists’ offices in metropolitan Seattle and Spokane
from Washington Dental Ser-

vices, USA, the largest dental insurer in the state, which covers
roughly one-third of its residents.
They compared this information
to unemployment data from the
Bureau of Labor Statistics and
Washington’s Employment Security Department, and ruled out
other possible explanations for
a correlation.
In the Seattle area, for every
10,000 people who lost their jobs,
there was a 1.2 per cent decrease
in visits to dentists for checkups.
The drop was higher in the
Spokane area, where the same

increase in unemployment was
associated with a 5.95 per cent decrease in preventive visits. This
is notable as the study looked at
people who had dental insurance
that covered routine care.
“We see that high communitylevel unemployment exacts a
psychological toll on individuals,” said lead study author Brian
Quinn. “Even for people who are
working, or who have a working
partner or spouse, there might
be an impact if they’re stressed
about themselves or their significant others losing their jobs.”

Quinn, a program officer for
the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, said the distraction of worrying about not having a job could
make dental care drop off a person’s radar. “During stressful periods, those things that don’t seem
as urgent may be ignored,” he said.
Quinn added that because preventive care is usually cheaper
than tooth repairs, dental plan
administrators and public health
policy makers might want to
promote cleaning and checkups
during periods of high unemployment.

“The Chinese government pays special
attention to the safety of medical products”
Interview with Mr Ma Yun Xiu, President of STD Lab Management
 China is increasingly competing
with dental technicians and laboratories in Europe and the US.
Editor Shelly Yui from our sister
publication Dental Tribune China
met with lab consultant Ma Yun Xiu
during the China Dental Industrial
Summit last year to discuss the
current state and prospects of the
dental lab industry in China.
Shelly Yui: Mr Ma, Chinese
dental labs are often said to offer cheap but low quality services. How do you respond to
these claims?
Ma Yun Xiu: Most Chinese
dental labs I had the chance to
visit have a serious consciousness
for service and product quality.
But contaminated bridges
and crowns from China have
recently appeared in the United States. Are these individual
cases?
I think they are. By now a
majority of dental labs in China
are using raw materials as well
as equipment from high-level
brands in the world, such as
Ivoclar Vivadent, Dentsply or
Shofu. To illustrate this, I can tell
you that almost 90 per cent of ceramic powder used in Chinese
labs is imported from North America, Europe and Japan.

How many dental labs are
there in China right now and to
what extend are they working
with overseas clients?
There are more than
8,000 dental labs of different
sizes in China of which approximately 100 are able to
provide qualified services
for overseas clients. While

“The applications of lasers are only going to expand”
Interview with Graeme Milicich, New Zealand
soft tissue laser treatments
are much less invasive compared with conventional approaches. I do not think there
is another piece of technology
in dentistry that has the ability Erbium lasers have to treat
soft tissue, bone, and tooth
structure, simply by changing
laser-operating parameters.

Graeme Milicich

Lasers have been used in different medical fields for many
years and have revolutionised
many treatments, notably eye
surgery and hair removal. The
technology is also an established aspect of modern dentistry and is widely used in
Europe and the USA. DTI editor Anke Schiemann had a
chance to speak to Graeme
Milicich, who is a fellow, diplomate, and founding board
member of the World Congress
of Minimally Invasive Dentistry (WCMID), prior to the
recent FDI Congress in Stockholm in Sweden.
Anke Schiemann: In a
nutshell, what are the benefits of using laser in clinical dentistry today?
Graeme Milicich: Lasers
have many applications in
clinical dentistry. My research in the last four years focused on the clinical applications of hard tissue Erbium
lasers. The broad range of
laser applications has benefits for both the patient and
the dentist. Many hard and

What is the advantage of
lasers over rotary cutting
instruments, and are there
limits to what a laser can do?
Yes, there are some limitations as to what can be done
with a laser, like the removal
of metal restorations and
crowns. But if you consider
the totality of the types of
treatments offered by general
dentists, these limitations are
far less compared to conventional rotary instrumentation. For example, you could
run into problems with soft
tissue contours or bone levels
associated with a deep cavity
while cutting tooth structure.
With a laser you can remove
both bone and soft tissue by
simply changing a setting, and
are therefore able to complete
the procedure in one appointment—something that cannot
really be done with a highspeed drill. Generally speaking, what can be done with a
drill, scalpel, or bone bur can
also be done with a laser. Additionally, many patients have
a fear of dentistry based on
the sounds and vibrations associated with rotary instruments. These sensations do
not occur with the laser, meaning the patients find treatment much more acceptable.

What role does laser fluorescence detection currently play in the prevention of oral diseases?
With the advent of the KaVo
DIAGNOdent more than ten
years ago, the first general
dentistry application of laser
fluorescence was introduced.
Like with any new technology,
it had to be understood first,
in order to achieve the best
results.
In order to provide patients
with accurate treatment recommendations based on the
results of early cavity detection, an understanding of minimally invasive concepts is essential. Otherwise, the profession can be open to claims of
over treatment. These charges
often derive from a lack of
understanding of the technology, its accurate application,
and the concepts and applications of minimally invasive
techniques. Often, astute clinicians are at the forefront of
the application of new technology and techniques, and
the research literature struggles to keep up with the clinical pioneers. This leads to
a period with a shortage of validation for what eventually
becomes a new and accepted
standard of care. Further developments in the field are
occurring and, as they filter
into general practice, the
standards of diagnosis will
continue to improve. For new
diagnostic technology to be
readily implemented in general practice, it has to be both
cost effective and time efficient.

What are the chances
of treating peri-implantitis
with lasers?
There are many case studies showing excellent results
when treating peri-implantitis with a laser. The laser’s use
for debridement and disinfection gives the competent clinician a tool that previously
wasn’t available. The laser is
safe to use around implants
with little risk of damage to
the implant. Personally, I have
only treated one case of periimplantitis so far, and it was
a complete success.
The use of laser in fields
like endodontics or periodontology is highly controversial. What are the
main issues here?
Once again, competent laser clinicians are ahead of the
research in these fields. Clinical results are being achieved
that are now only beginning
to be validated by research,
and until the research results
are available, use of lasers in
these fields is going to remain
controversial for many. Those
that are using lasers and are
observing the clinical outcomes, have little doubt as
to the efficacy of their treatments. Personally, I have been
involved in research using
the Waterlase (Er,Cr:YSGG) in
endodontics. The ability for
complete debridement of the
canals following conventional
canal preparation using radial
firing tips in a non-ablative
mode is significant, and ad-

dresses the issues of air and
fluid entrapment at the apex
that are associated with conventional techniques used for
final canal debridement and
rinsing.
In your FDI lecture you
talked about new concepts
associated with laser therapy. Can you give our readers a brief overview and explain these concepts?

it requires a mental awareness to slow the motion of the
tip, to allow ablation to occur.
As competence increases, this
phenomenon is used to control ablation rates, without
having to alter laser settings,
by increasing or decreasing
the motion of the tip.
The third concept is focusing and defocusing the beam,
to alter ablation rates without

(DTI/Creation/Shafeev)

The most common complaint from a new user is that
it will not cut fast enough. The
most significant contributor
to slow ablation rates is the
user, not the technology. The
single biggest hurdle a dentist
faces when beginning with
laser is the difference between rotary instrumentation
and lasers. When this is understood, a new laser dentist
can become competent in a
very short time. If these concepts are not well taught, then
the new user will become frustrated and may fail to integrate their new laser into their
treatment regimes.
The first concept is that lasers are end cutting. We have
all become very competent
using rotary instrumentation
and have developed reflex
motions as a result. The natural tendency is to apply these
‘reflexes’ when using a laser
and this leads to frustration
for the new user. When using
a high-speed bur, we tend to
move the bur laterally to extend a cut. This does not work
with a laser because it is
end cutting, not side cutting.
Therefore, the operator needs
to learn a new way of pointing
the laser directly in the direction where a cut needs to be
extended. Anyone who has become competent in the use of
air abrasion masters the use of
a laser very quickly because
the same concepts apply to
both technologies.
The second concept is that
slow is fast. Once again, this
concept is associated with
our reflex motions associated
with using high-speed hand
pieces. We tend to use a fast
painting motion on the surface when contouring a cavity.
Exactly the opposite applies
when using a laser. Ablation
rates are stalled by this rapid
painting motion, and initially

having to change power settings on the laser. This technique, in combination with
slowing or speeding up the
motion of the tip, allows the
operator to finesse ablation
rates to create very smooth
contours.
The final concept is the
clinically observable ablation
threshold. Many new users focus on power settings and how
far the tip should be from the
surface, depending on what
they want to do. Absolute distances in relation to operating
parameters are impossible to
give because there are so
many variables involved, including the tip being used, the
state of the tip, the air/water
ratios, and the surface being
ablated. As a tip is moved towards the tooth, it reaches
a point where the operator
can begin to see the commencement of ablation. This
then gives a reference maximum operating distance in relation to the current settings
and tip being used. New users
are taught to start out of focus
and move towards the tooth
until the clinically observable
ablation threshold is reached.
This distance can range over
several millimetres, depending on the various parameters. Understanding the concept helps new users avoid inadvertent high fluence effects
at the ablation surface.
There are two other issues
that will be dealt with as separate topics in the lecture in
regard to ablation rates in
enamel. This is the area that
new users find most frustrating, because they tend to use
rotary cutting movements
with an end-cutting device.
Firstly, because laser ablation
is a non-contact technique,
magnification is essential. Secondly, enamel ablation rates
are related to the orientation

of the long axis of the enamel
prisms in relation to the plane
of the ablation face. Ablation
rates are 40 per cent greater
when enamel prisms are ablated from their sides, rather
then on their ends. This requires an understanding of
the orientation of the long
axis of enamel prisms in different surfaces of a tooth. The
culmination of this understanding is epitomised in the
time it takes a new user or
a competent laser clinician to
cut a slot preparation, with
a new user often taking more
than three times as long to
complete the same procedure.
Recent research on shorter wavelength lasers or the
so-called blue lasers has
shown them to be effective
in diagnosing cancer cells.
With this in mind, how do
you see the use of the laser
in general dental practice
developing in the years to
come?
Many dentists focused on
minimal intervention have
embraced laser fluorescence
in the diagnosis of demineralisation of tooth structure.
With these new applications,
such cancer screening becomes cost effective and will
become a common part of general dentistry. The main issue
is that laser effects are frequency specific, and as applications develop, this will lead
to a plethora of technology
that becomes difficult for the
clinician to incorporate into
a practice. I envisage, in the
near future, a diode-based
laser that will have multiple,
switchable frequencies that
will allow one unit to accomplish varied tasks that require
different frequencies. As uptake of laser technology increases, costs will decrease,
making it more attractive to
more of the profession.
Do you expect lasers to
be an essential part in
every dental practice in
10 to 15 years?
The multiple applications
of lasers are only going to expand in the future. At the moment, the lasers with the most
clinical applications in one
unit are the Erbium family,
and many dentists have embraced this technology and
are constantly expanding its
clinical applications. If we
look back over 60 years to
the initial introduction of the
high-speed hand piece, there
was initial and significant resistance to the technology,
and it took over 10 years before it was readily accepted
into general practice. Lasers
have had a slower journey,
mainly because of the need for
advanced technology to make
them more applicable in the
field of dentistry and the associated research and development costs that are reflected
in the price of lasers. Taking
the cost of a laser out of the
equation, it is very easy to visualise a laser in every practice in the near future.
Thank you very much for
the interview.

IDS shows current trends Dental implants market
in endodontics
continues to grow
New instrument and tool systems increase success of treatment
 The world’s largest trade fair
for dental medicine and dental
technology offers endodontologists an outstanding opportunity to discuss the technical and
economic aspects of modern
concepts in endodontics in detail with specialists from exhibiting companies. Many of
the innovations created by endodontics experts in the last
few years have been further developed by businesses in the
dental industry, resulting in mature instrument and tool systems. Now lesions of the root
canal are diagnosed and, above
all, treated better. For example,
modern ultrasound imaging
procedures are used to locate
the root canal precisely and
measure its length right to the
apex, as well as to provide exact
control of the file position during preparation. High-resolution intraoral cameras that
are connected to monitors and
which enable documentation
and diagnosis of endodontic
treatments using views of the
root canal are also available.
“The fascinating scientific
and technological advances in
the area of endodontics have
greatly improved the chances
of long-term tooth preservation
and also make this specialist
area one of the significant components of prophylaxis-oriented dentistry,” said Dr Martin
Rickert, Chairman of the VDDI
(Association of German Dental
Manufacturers).
Tooth preservation using endodontic measures has become

which increasingly use electronically controlled torque
limiting or variable oscillations.
This means the files remain intact over their lifetime.

(DTI/Nikola Spasenoski)

increasingly important in modern dentistry with treatments
that have been carried out in
compliance with regulations
achieving success rates—based
on evidence—of between 68 and
85 per cent. The spectrum of
methodologies in conservative
treatment ranges from manual
or mechanical root canal preparation, disinfection and obturation, to the revision of the root
canal should it become necessary and minimally invasive,
microsurgical concepts for the
treatment of particular endoperiodontic lesions.
Dentists have a number of
different options available for
root canal preparation: classic
manual file systems or rotating
instruments, particularly those
made of break-resistant nickeltitanium alloys, as well as timesaving mechanical preparation.
Preparation is carried out safely
through the use of motors,

Root canal rinsing for cleaning and disinfection using effective chemical preparations can
now be supplemented by hydrodynamic procedures. For obturation, as well as the classic
methods, there are modern
sealer adhesives and cements
made of composites, which also
enable resilient post restorations if needed. Fibreglass-reinforced polymer or metal post
systems for stable fixation can
also be used, in addition to
any necessary prosthetic treatments.
For clinically complex problems, endodontologists are offered complete systems that
also contain files with special
geometries for the revision of
treated root canals. As a last resort—for root tip resection, for
example—there are powerful
magnifying glass systems or
surgical microscopes available
for minimally invasive endodontic microsurgery for skilled
experts.
“For dentists that are wanting to start in endodontics as
well as specialists in tooth preservation, a visit to the 33rd International Dental Show is an
exceptional opportunity to become more familiar with the entire spectrum of this fascinating
area,” said Dr Markus Heibach,
Managing Director of the VDDI.

Osseogenesis and stem cell technology find their way into specialty
There is now doubt that implantology has become the
fastest growing sector in dentistry. Within only five years,
the number of implants inserted in Germany has doubled to more than 700,000 per
year. Total annual growth
rates of some 10–15 per cent
also reflect the growing demand of aging patients for
a modern implant-based dental prosthesis.
The development towards
looking after the remaining
teeth has been the result of
immense research and development activities in both
academia and in the dental
industry. At IDS Cologne, dentists and dental technicians
will have the opportunity to
gain a full overview of these
latest concepts regarding implant geometries and materials, as well as the range
of suprastructures currently available. These methods
have become alternatives to
conventional procedures, for
example the sinus-lift.

lutions adapted to the respective indications and enabling
them to choose the right ones
for their practice. Optimised
procedures for preserving the
alveolar process, but also for
augmentation or alveolar distraction osteogenesis are on
display. Another focus will be
on state-of-the-art biotechnological procedures for osseogenesis including adult stem cell
technology. Several manufacturers will be showing their
latest developments for using
bone marrow stem cells and
other osteogenic factors and
their integration in what are referred to as scaffolds (support
membranes). Intramedullary
resorbable rods or membranes,
in some cases made of collagen
or mucous membrane material
are just some of the new topics
to be addressed during IDS.

Furthermore, there has
been progress in the field of
implantological instruments,
such as atraumatic forceps,
that are gentle on alveolar tissue or improved hollow cylinder osteotomes.

Furthermore, state-of-the-art,
high-resolution computer tomographic navigation procedures
for use in combination with cast
laser scans have made their way
into implantology. Used in combination with other high-tech
diagnostic methods, such as digital x-ray, implantologists are
able to receive extremely precise stereo-lithographic drilling
templates that enable the preparation of the implant bed with
the highest precision.

Visitors to the show in
Cologne will also be confronted with a wealth of so-

Implantology specialists will
be presenting their latest curricular projects at the IDS

thereby offering interested
dentists the perfect opportunity to enter and train in this
increasingly important discipline. These include topics
such as dentistry for the elderly, piezo techniques, laser
treatments or topics relating
specifically to prosthetics as
specialist areas within implantology.
A new German-Israeli study found that 98.5 per cent of
all implants are successful
and there was no discernable
bone loss in 88 per cent of the
implant sites they observed.
The study goal was to determine the level of bone loss
over time at the implant sites
in the jaw. A key clinical issue
was not whether bone loss
would occur, but how much
bone loss should be considered normal and acceptable.
“The International Dental
Show, the world’s largest
trade fair for dentistry and
dental technology that will
be taking place in Cologne
from 24 to 28 March 2009, is
the ideal opportunity for
trade visitors from dental
practices and laboratories to
inform themselves comprehensively in discussions with
specialists from exhibiting
companies and experienced
users about the range of modern implant concepts,” says
Dr. Markus Heibach, President of the VDDI.

Independent news for visitors and exhibitors

Although the biggest number
of registered exhibitors will be
still from the fair’s home country,
large numbers are expected from
the United States, Italy, Switzerland, France and the UK. In addition, a growing number of suppliers will be attending from
countries in the European Union,
Middle East, Asia, Australia as
well as North America. “IDS participants can look forward to
the most attractive International
Dental Show ever,” says Oliver P.
Kuhrt, Executive Vice President
of Koelnmesse GmbH. “It’s no ex-

aggeration to say that the entire international dental world
will be in Cologne from 20th to
24th March.”
Over the past two years, the
organiser has extensively modernised the exhibition centre and
enlarged the exhibition space up
to 130,000 square metres. The
Koelnmesse Masterplan for IDS
2007 has also given the halls a
facelift. While a second entrance
area was added in 2005, fair
guests can now use three entrances including the new South
entrance which is near the Koelnmesse/Deutz railway station and
links the fair with downtown
Cologne and all major airports in
the region. The Boulevard, which
was completed in January 2007,
is supposed to shorten walking
distances between the halls and
enable visitors to reach the exhibitors’ stands more quickly.

Distributed free of charge at all points of entry to the trade fair,
within the exhibition halls and in official trade fair hotels, every
visitor gets a comprehensive overview of the constantly growing
trade show.

High performance materials for perfect aesthetics on display
At IDS 2009, dentists and dental technicians
will gain a comprehensive overview of modern
veneers that offer aesthetic improvements, particularly in the area of front teeth, the organiser
Koelnmesse has announced. Products made from
the high-performance ceramic zirconium oxide
and its layered or pressed-ceramic veneers represent one of the most ambitious areas in dental
prosthetics. In the area of aesthetically pleasing
acrylic veneers, materials are also being in development. The latest composite materials do not
offer unknown abrasion strength but also necessary colour fidelity to perfect high-quality substructure constructions.
Veneers can be manufactured from pressed
ceramics, high-fusion veneer ceramics and from
plastic, making this a challenging specialist field

for dentists and technicians. The increasing demand for high performance ceramics, as well as
for alternatives in the field of ceramics or precious
metals blended with the latest synthetic materials, shows that an increasing number of patients
want the best for their oral health and are prepared to invest in it—even going as far as expensive, implant-borne suprastructures that resemble natural teeth in their appearance.

(DTI/Koelnmesse)

Along with the advancements of ceramics,
there have also been almost revolutionary changes in laboratory operations. Until recently, only
large companies could mill substructures out of
zirconium oxide, but now smaller companies and
even practice laboratories can participate in the
developments in all-ceramic, high-performance
materials.

AD

Dr. Markus Heibach, Managing Director of the
VDDI is convinced: “In this current climate of
change, the winners will be those who find out
more now at IDS and understand how to use the
upcoming opportunities strategically for their
business.” Visitors will find all of these new opportunities to be presented in Cologne, and will
be able to use them to make sensible decisions
for their own laboratory or practice, he added.

Prosthetics
a key topic
at IDS
Prosthetics play an increasing role in the future
of dentistry, mainly because the population ages
in most countries. Digital technology is being constantly incorporated into production processes
and through it technicians have improved options
at hand to work more efficiently and establish
new procedures in laboratories. Accurate casting,
however, remains a critical issue. Modern casting
materials offer high precision and processing
security in this process that is crucial for the accuracy of any restoration.

DENTAL EXCELLENCE.
EXPERIENCE IMPACTS STANDARDS.
_
We do not compromise in our development of innovative medical technology products. This is why we place particular value from the
outset on the development of solution-oriented technologies, as well as on a very high degree of user-friendliness in daily medical
routine. The result: Swiss Medical Technology products, utilizing intriguingly unique technology, set new standards in function, design
and ergonomics. Some examples of this innovation include: extraordinarily bright and high-contrast image rendition, two-dimensional
or three-dimensional image presentation, image magnification from 2 to 25 times – combined with ergonomically comfortable
working positions during the majority of treatment activities are only a few of the numerous highlights of Swiss Medical Technology’s
3D-Dentaloscopes. Discover this for yourself – for instance at Swiss Medical Technology at IDS Cologne 2009, Hall 11.1, Booth
D 020. Or make an appointment with us for a personal product demonstration at info@s-m-t.ch. We look forward to meeting you.

Today’s high-tech tooth replacements are of
the highest quality and biocompatible with fullceramic restorations. The high-performance ceramic zirconium oxide in particular is characterised by a broad range of indications and high
aesthetics with practically no visible difference
compared to natural teeth. CAD/CAM processes
are most frequently used to process it, but the
substructure construction can also be done using
traditional wax modelling followed by the CAM
process.
Metallic prosthetic materials have always
been important as bake-on alloys with a high gold
content for crowns and substructures and are
used mainly with the established casting technology. Substructure constructions, however, are increasingly being manufactured without precious
metals—usually as heavy-duty cobalt chromium
alloys or fully biocompatible in titanium using
modern CAD/CAM. Selective laser melting has
been established as the latest alternative digital
production technology. It uses metallic powder
alloys that are usually free from precious metals
for prosthetics. Restorations made with this technology are characterised by their accurate fit
and resilience.

(DTI/Koelnmesse)

With respect to substructure constructions,
crowns and abutments, there are various highand low-fusion veneer ceramics for both the
layering and overpress techniques. In addition,
new abrasion-resistant composite plastics are
also being used now for the aesthetic veneer.
Progress has also been made with the important adhesives used for fixing restorations or
suprastructures. The trend is moving towards
process-safe single-bottle adhesives which have
been shown to perform the same way as classic
bonding materials.

The CAD/CAM Evolution
Computers in practice and laboratory will determine action, Prof.Albert Mehl, Switzerland

Prof. Albert Mehl

Impression-free practice, virtual construction models and
articulation on Windows desktops, biogeneric occlusal surface design with intelligent
software, as well as rapid prototyping, and 3-D printing are
just some of topics increasingly mentioned in lectures
and publications dealing with
CAD/CAM. Already, ‘conven-

and effective measuring techniques developed in the 1990s,
it was possible to adapt 3-D
recording/imaging systems to
the needs of dentistry and simplify their operation. Continued
development of CAD software
enabled a multitude of construction options (Fig. 1) and
an improvement in the quality
of the grinding/milling units.
Economic efficiency, combined
with high quality restorations,
is the current hallmark of
CAD/CAM technology. It is not
only dentists and dental engineers who benefit from standardised and excellently-controlled treatment and manufacturing methods, the patient
does as well.
What is the latest in CAD/
CAM development? Anyone
well acquainted with the field
predicted early on that manufacturing centres would play
a crucial role: high capacity
utilisation, specialised staff,

in milling procedures and, just
recently, in the laser sintering
of metals is often completely
forgotten. The manufacture of
metal restorations (eg, non-precious metals, titanium, or gold
alloys) will thus eventually become a domain of CAD/CAM
technology.
What does the future of
CAD/CAM technology hold?
Intra-oral 3-D measuring will
at least in part make the impression-free practice possible
(Fig. 4). The speed, operation,
and precision of the images
are being continually improved
and the measurement range expanded. Once a 3-D data set of
tooth surfaces has been stored,
a completely novel form of
dental diagnostics can be conducted, by comparing data that
were recorded at different time
points. Thus, quantitative, 3-D
progression control of orthodontic treatment, the analysis
of erosion and abrasion, peri-

Fig. 2: The remaining tooth substance determines the morphology of the occlusal surface in the defect region, largely through, for instance, the position of the cusp tips, the cusp slopes, and the course of fissures. The natural rules governing the biogeneric occlusal surface
can be found through the analysis of many thousands of occlusal surfaces of natural teeth. (DTI/Photo Mehl) — Fig. 3: Using the natural laws thus found, an occlusal surface is calculated that replaces the defect as naturally as possible, by adapting it to the remaining tooth
structure. (DTI/Photo Mehl) — Fig. 4: In the future, intra-oral camera scanners will enable optical impressions of the entire jaw, thus preparing the way for the impression-free practice. (DTI/Photo Wiedhahn)

tional’ CAD/CAM technology is
in use in dental offices and laboratories, and now the next step
in CAD/CAM evolution is anticipated. Only a few years ago,
discussion focused on exactness of fit, the reduced costs
for dentists and patients, and
user-friendliness. The quality
of CAD/CAM restorations was
viewed with cynicism, and only
a few pioneers gave scientific
attention to this technology.
At present, the situation is
quite different. The hesitant
and doubtful attitude towards
computer-manufactured dental
prostheses has been discarded,
and an accepted, standard procedure has taken its place.
Many companies now invest immense resources in the further
development of this technology.
What impelled this rapid
change? On the one hand, the
value of zirconium dioxide ceramic in particular, which can
only be processed with computer-assisted techniques, became evident. This material
made all-ceramic fixed partial
dentures possible for the first
time. Other ceramics, too, exhibited better material properties after automated milling
because the blanks used could
be industrially manufactured
under optimal conditions. On
the other hand, the technology of CAD/CAM systems
has clearly improved. Based
on more powerful computers

centralised material purchasing, and high quality standards
for ‘standard care’ facilitate an
economical throughput, which
in turn enables the amortisation of the investment in highly
developed manufacturing machines, while increasing economic efficiency. Mid-sized and
smaller labs will use their core
competence in the computerassisted manufacture of high
quality, aesthetic restorations
and special fabrication of partial prostheses.
Another important current
trend is the chairside manufacture of inlays, onlays, partial
crowns, and single crowns. The
dentist is this CAD/CAM procedure’s target group. The oneappointment treatment has a
time-saving benefit for the patient and eliminates provisional
restoration, which additionally
minimises the risk of cusp fracture, enamel-margin chipping,
and weakening of the dentine
bond. The biogeneric formation
of occlusal surfaces enables the
reconstruction of missing occlusal surfaces for inlays, onlays,
and partial crowns according to
nature’s designs (Figs. 2, 3).
CAD/CAM and all-ceramics
are often mentioned in conjunction with each other, which
is understandable given the
discussion above, but this
doesn’t represent all the options. The enormous potential

odontal changes, or interventions is possible.
A distinct advantage of computer-assisted procedures over
the conventional wax-up technique also lies in the functional
and morphological occlusal sur-

netic contexts. Virtual articulators can simulate any programmable movement, so that considerably more natural laws and
limits, as well as individual parameters, can be integrated into
the restoration surface than has
been possible up to now.

of dentistry. Through cooperative ventures, universities
and industry can form a useful symbiosis to promote and
shape this exciting development. Until now, CAD/CAM
or computer-assisted dentistry
has not been a central subject

ogy is tremendous, this is certain to change in the next few
years, which in turn will influence the training of dental students and indirectly the treatment possibilities in practices
as well, in the interests of our
patients.

details. According to the
company, the worktop of this
collections looks particularly attractive and has the
sink moulded in one unique
piece.
Their basic Winn collection
was also recently expanded
with Winn Prestige that has a
minimalistic design but at the
same time is functional and
rich in chromatic solutions.
The glass worktop of this
range will be available in
12 different colours, the com-

pany said. They added that it
is the perfect furniture collection to make workplaces look
attractive without investing
too much.
Edarredo is located in Azzano Decimo in Italy. They develop and produce furniture
for dental surgery and laboratory. The company was one
of the first in the dental field
to use CAD/CAM systems for
both manufacturing and the
planning of the dental surgeries and laboratories. They
also first offered steel furniture, as well as furniture elevated from the floor or sterilisation modules mounted
on wheels. The sink over
the top, thus not integrated,
and the patented crystal

Micromotor with LED illumination
 TKD Tekne Dental from
Italy will present its new
brushless micromotor TKD
Definitive Led with LED illumination at IDS Cologne.
Designed for dental professionals who require flexibility and excellent reliability, TKD Definitive LED can
be installed on most dental
units without need for maintenance, the company says.
Without the typically used
carbon brushes the new micromotor will offer high performance, efficiency and extraordinary durability, they
added. The LED illumination is supposed to run over
a time period of 10 years
and provides a “cool” light
which eliminates any chro-

matic distortion of oral tissues.
Smaller in size than other
brushless micromotors, TKD

Definitive Led will be easy to
handle and is suited to frequent use. Designed and built
exclusively at TKD’s research
centre, the standard control

module used with the micromotor is also compact and
simple to install. According to
the company, a wide range of
speeds from 2,000–40,000 rpm
and software allow vector
control over TKD Definitive
Led to ensure simplicity, flexibility and linear functionality.
Since 1969, TKD is supplying the dental sector with
state-of-the-art instruments,
such as micromotors, turbines, couplings, hoses, scalers and curing lights.

CMS Dental introduces
powerful PAD system
AD

PRODUCTS IN TIME FOR THE FUTURE

 The principle behind photo
activated disinfection (PAD) is
the use of a specific light source
to activate a photosensitizer,
which serves as a catalyst in
transforming oxygen molecules
into highly reactive oxygen
specimens, such as negatively
charged oxygen ions and oxygen radicals. As the photosensitizer has an extremely high
affinity to bacterial membranes, the bacteria are instantly destroyed when the reactive oxygen specimens are
formed. The technique is especially useful in the oral cavity as
it disrupts the biofilm in which
the bacteria are embedded.

and pericoronitis. An introkit including two autoclavable covers
for the light head, blunt tips for
surface treatment and long tips
for more profound treatment
and endodontics, will
be available to visitors of IDS for a
budget price
of 999
Euros.

With FotoSan, CMS Dental
from Denmark introduces
a PAD system that is able
to treat a wide range of indications including caries,
endodontics, periodontics,
periimplantitis, gingivitis, FotoSan (DTI/CMS Dental)

The photosensitizer comes in
three different viscosities facilitating the practical applications.
According to the company,
the treatment with FotoSan
lasts only 10 to 30 seconds and
has no side effects.
CMS Dental was founded in
1984 by doctors Jimmie Kert and
Lisbeth Rose. Besides FotoSan,
CMS Dental manufactures the
two obturation systems Soft-Core
Endodontic Obturators and OneStep Obturator, the Flash curing
lights and DioBeam Low Level
Laser. The company is selling
dental pharmaceuticals on the
Danish market since 1995 and focuses on the development of new
therapies and products that benefit both dentists and patients.

 An US leader in soft-tissue
lasers, Zap Lasers, is exhibiting
its family of easy-to-use lasers
for the first time at this year’s
IDS. According to the company,
not only does the exhibition
serve as Zap’s introduction to
the European market, it also
marks the start of the company’s search for more international distributors.
“We sell our lasers direct in
the United States, but work
with a market-expert distributor in some Asian countries,”
says Zap Vice-President of
Sales and Marketing Alex Di
Sessa. “Their expertise has
earned us great growth and
we understand that
to emulate the
same success
in Europe,
we need
a partner
who understands the

European market’s nuances
and needs.”
Zap has been manufacturing
and distributing soft-tissue lasers for more than 10 years and
offers a wide selection of lasers
for both general dentists and
specialists. Since its introduction in the US in May 2008, the
Styla, for example, has become
one of the industry’s best-selling soft-tissue lasers. This first
completely wire-free microlaser
boasts all of the power and functionality of its tabletop counterparts in a 56 gram pen-like design that is 20 times lighter than
any other soft-tissue laser on the
market, the company says.

Styla, and its orthodontic
counterpart, StylaOrtho, is just
the latest in Zap’s line of soft-tissue lasers. This product line up
also includes SoftLase Pro that introduced one of dentistry’s first
touch-screen control interfaces
and voice confirmation features.
Zap’s HygieneLase and OrthoLase have the same touch-screen
convenience and compact size
as SoftLase Pro, and feature presets for the most commonly performed FDA-approved soft-tissue

New ‘impressions’ at Müller-Omicron booth
 Precise impression silicones and
disinfectants will by on display at the
booth of Müller-Omicrom in hall 4.2.
The German company—formed by a
merger between two separate companies two years ago—says to focus not
only on their client’s benefits but also
on improved security of their products. Dentasept AF Plus, for example,
is a high effective concentrate for
cleaning and disinfection that offers
higher value through a concentration
rate of 1 per cent, as well as an extended action spectrum and wider
indication. It is aldehyde and phenol
free and can be used for all dental
instruments. By using an ultrasonic

bath the effectiveness time is 5 min
only.
In the field of impression taking, a
new scannable, addition-curing kneadable silicone for the data entry in
dental laboratories will be introduced.
The gammasil Perfect Tec3D features
special optical reflection activity and,
therefore, suits for the powderless,
optical 3-D registration and data entry
of CAD/CAM and CIM registration.
Easy cutting is allowed through a final
hardness of Shore A95.

Betasil Vario Implant (DTI/Müller-Omicron)

The monophase material betasil
Vario Implant was developed espe-

cially for the requirements of implants and
transfer impressions. The pronounced hydrophilic properties provide for a high and dense
wetting of the surface with detailed reproduction also in a moist oral environment. Accurate
transfer and fixation of the transfer posts are
guaranteed through high precision and coordinated final hardness. Betasil Vario Implant can
be used as tray or syringe material and for other
precision impressions, such as inlay/onlay,
crowns and bridges or functional impressions.
According to the company, the time in the
mouth is only two minutes with a pleasant mint
flavour.

Piezosurgery enters third generation at IDS Cologne
 At IDS 2009 Mectron will
present the new third generation Piezosurgery as well as
new instruments for implant
site preparation with Piezosurgery. The latest, and
maybe most important example of Mectron’s innovative
power is based on the work of
Professor Tomaso Vercellotti,
a specialised dentist and
brother of one of Mectron’s
founders, who had been unhappy for quite some time
with the level of precision and
safety offered by the currently available intra-operative instruments in dental
bone surgery. To overcome
the problem, Vercelotti and
Mectron had been working together on the idea since 1997
to adapt piezo-electric technology to bone surgery applications. The cooperation between the clinician and engineers resulted in the concept

of modulating the
basic ultrasonic vibration with a second, low-frequency
vibration (which is
adapted to the bone
quality) that permits to cut bone efficiently and without
overheating. Clinical trials showed
that the micrometric cut of Piezosurgery allows unsurpassed precision
in dental surgery
while preserving
surrounding soft tissues. It also keeps
the intra-operative
field almost free
from blood.
The first generation of Piezosurgery
was marketed back
in 2001. Today, thou-

sands of specialised
dentists and oral
surgeons use this
revolutionary technique and make the
company by far a
worldwide leader in
ultrasonic bone surgery.

The new generation Piezosurgery will be revealed at IDS (DTI/Mectron)

When Mectron
decided in the 80’s
to go for ultrasonic
units (used at that
time above all for
supragingival scaling), the so-called
m a g n eto s t r i c t i ve
technology which
was then gold standard and still is in
many markets, was
never considered to
be used. The company rather chose
the state-of-the-art
piezo-electric tech-

nology and tried to improve it
to make it completely reliable. One of the critical points
was the mechanical stress
on the ultrasound-generating
transducer in the handpiece,
and Mectron was the first
manufacturer to introduce
transducers made in titanium. It was later adapted by
many of Mectron’s competitors.
Mectron’s technological
contribution to the field of
light curing was possibly
even more decisive. The company had already been leading in the field of conventional halogen lights before it
came out with the world’s
first curing light based on LED
technology. Cordless, powerful and lightweight curing
handpieces with an additional long life-span have revolutionised the polymeriza-

tion habits in many dental offices so that it can be considered today’s standard.
Mectron Medical Technologies is based on the Ligurian
Coast, almost on the seafront
and only half an hour in the
south of Genoa, Italy. It was
founded over 25 years ago
by engineers Fernando Bianchetti and Domenico Vercellott who still are active owners of the company. Mectron
exports to over 70 countries
in the world. Almost 100 employees in R&D, manufacturing and administration are
contributing to this success
story in the Carasco headquarters.

micro motor
As another improvement of the SycoDrill,
SycoTec will be presenting the shortest micro motor for straight and contra-angle dental handpieces SycoSLM at IDS Cologne. The SycoSLM is
on average 50 per cent shorter and 30 per cent
lighter (67 grams) than other electric dental motors. When combined with a contra-angle handpiece, it will provide a balanced distribution of
weight and improved handling, the company said. With only 31.7 mm in
length, the SycoSLM is
also the world’s
smallest micro motor.

SycoSLM with light
(DTI/SycoTec)

The lower weight
of the SycoSLM can relieve the muscles in the fingers for a more relaxed, pleasant
and precise working experience, especially for female dentists. The improved distribution of weight between the
contra-angle handpiece, electric motor and hose
makes the system fell more balanced in the hand.
An integrated LED light with a significantly longer lifetime compared to previous high-pressure
lamps is supposed to provide improved lighting
during treatment procedures.
SycoSLM was designed for integrated media
delivery of spray air, spray water and cooling air.
It also incorporates a non-return valve for spray
water to prevent back-contamination. The rotational speed range of the micro motor lies between
1,000 and 40,000 rpm with a torque of 3 Ncm for
preparations. According to the company, even
when connected to straight and contra-angle
handpieces, SycoSLM operates free of vibrations
and inaudibly. The instrument coupling corresponds to ISO standards and is suitable for all
straight and contra-angle handpieces.
As a Original Equipment Manufacturer, SycoTec provides the micro motor together with
a hose and motor electronical system that can be
connected to treatment units equipped with conventional communication interfaces. Therefore,
only minor adjustments are required prior to
the installation of the device, the company said.
SycoTec also offers technical and aesthetic modifications to the product in line with the specific requirements of the treatment unit manufacturer,
for example, a finish of the product’s surface or a
laser engraving according to individual customer
requirements.

Performance in composites with Kuraray
Kuraray was established in
Kurashiki in Japan in 1926,
and originally involved in the
industrial production of synthetic fibers out of viscose.
As science and society continue to develop, new questions and challenges also
arise for dental materials.
Thus, IDS 2009 will be
the platform for Kuraray’s
new dual-curing, self-adhesive resin cement CLEARFIL
SA Cement being introduced
to the European market.
With the innovative selfetching resin cement CLEARFIL SA Cement, Kuraray Europe was able to create another important benefit for
dental practices. Excess paste
can now be removed in one
piece or in larger bits without much effort. Kuraray’s
unique adhesive monomer
(MDP) ensures a consistent

strong bond strength and
low technical sensitivity. The
high mechanical stability ensures an excellent marginal
seal. The auto-mix syringe
as well as the optional dispensing gun (CLEARFIL DISPENSER) provide a direct and
comfortable way of using
the material without the necessity or mixing. A precise
application—even directly into the root canal—is possible
with the use of the Endo
tip.
According to the company,
CLEARFIL SA Cement can be
used for the adhesive attachment of full ceramic, composite, metal or zirconia crowns,
bridges, inlays and onlays.

The company carried out intensive research and development work, creating a broad
base of experience and technology in the sectors polymer
chemistry, chemical synthesis, and chemical engineer-

ing. Thanks to its technological strength and comprehensive experience, Kuraray has
been able to develop highly
innovative products for many
more selected fields of business such as the dental industry.
In 1978, for example,
the company introduced the
first bonding system CLEARFIL BOND SYSTEM-F to the

market that marked the start
of the age of adhesive dentistry. At the same time,
the company developed the
“total-etch technique” for
enamel and dentin. Today,
Kuraray continues to produce innovative high-quality
products that are supposed
to make history, such as
PANAVIA F 2.0, CLEARFIL
PROTECT BOND, CLEARFIL
SE BOND and ESTENI C&B.

These brands are proof of
Kuraray’s capability to develop solutions for practice as
a result of its pioneering research, the company says.
Kuraray Medical Inc. has
set itself the goal of meeting
demands and requirements
of dentistry to the very best of
its ability, now and in the future. The company aims to ensure that dentists will always
have a reliable partner in this
company by maintaining an
intensive, regular exchange
of information with its customers, through comprehensive research and development, and ongoing training.

Show Preview IDS Cologne 2009

ACTEON Group presentation at IDS Cologne
 The internationally-established dental group ACTEON
will present its product portfolio of electronic equipment,
dental consumables and imaging systems at IDS 2009.
Founded in the early ‘80s, the
SATELEC-PIERRE ROLLAND
group changed its name to
ACTEON in order to federate
under a common banner and
give recognition to the past, as
well as to the brands and personnel of each respective industrial firm and foreign subsidiary it represents today.
ACTEON is ISO 13485-certified and has been designing
and marketing a complete
range of electronic dental
equipment and dental consumables for more than 30
years.

The group is currently organised into three divisions.
The ACTEON Equipment division markets the SATELEC
range and is a world-leading

supplier of piezoelectric generators. It offers a complete
range of electronic equipment
for dentistry including osteotomes, polishers, scalers,
high frequency scalpels, curing lights and autoclaves. The
ACTEON Pharma division manufactures PIERRE ROLLAND
products, notably Expasyl and
Riskontrol and provides a full
selection of dental consumables such as anesthetics,
endo treatment, hygiene and
impression materials. The
ACTEON Imaging division with
SOPRO products has made
a name for itself in intraoral
cameras and has developed
innovative digital radiology
systems.
ACTEON states that its success is mainly thanks to continuous innovation and a constantly growing international
coverage. More than 40 highcaliber pharmacists, biologists, electronics engineers,

mechanics and digital signal
specialists in their research
centers work in close collaboration with university clinicians and dental experts
worldwide to create new treatment protocols.
The 700 employees (50 per
cent outside of France) occupy
six manufacturing sites—in
Bordeaux, Marseilles, Bilbao
in Spain and Tüttlingen in Germany. ACTEON has also eight
subsidiaries and six representative offices in the major international markets of Europe,
Asia, the Middle East, USA,
Latin America and Russia.
For 2009, ACTEON forecasts
a sales turnover of 111 million
Euros with a share of 20 per
cent in France and 80 per cent
internationally.

Harmonic Shades cements Revolutionary composite

 With Harmonic Shades from

before the final cementation.
The new cement will be presented at IDS 2009, the company has announced. Impres-

sion compound (Stents), guttapercha stopping, shellac base
plates, adhesive wax, copal
varnish and silane will be
other products
on display.

Hoffmann Dental
Manufaktur is a renown specialist for high-quality luting
and lining cements on zinc
phosphate basis. The company
started business 117 years ago
with only a hand-fired coke
oven. The first 100 portions of
zinc phosphate cement were

officially traded on 12th February 1892. Up to today the raw
material mixture is filled into
saggers per hand, before a
computer controlled high performance oven burns them to
hard cement blocks. After
burning, a three stage grinding process is needed to
achieve the ideal grain size
distribution. Hardly any
other material has an
equally long and successful clinical record in
dental practice. Only
fine particle cements
with a film thickness of
max. 25 μm are produced.
Hoffmann Dental
Manufaktur has 3,000 sqm
of production area based in
the vibrant heart of the German capital Berlin. They supply dental retailers in 52 countries around the world.

ENAMEL plus HRi (DTI/Micerium)

Micerium from Italy is introducing the ENAMEL plus
HRi system at IDS Cologne.
According to the company,
the system will feature all
benefits of the former ENAMEL plus HFO system but, at
the same time, was improved
up from the delivery syringe
to the material itself.
This new Universal Enamel
shade will be the first composite to match the refractive index of natural enamel.
Therefore, making invisible
margins will be much easier.
It also wears similar to natural tooth structure to al-

low restorations made from
ENAMEL plus HRi ‘age’ at the
same rate as the natural tooth
structure that’s surrounds
it. The new syringe was ergonomically designed and is
clearly marked with the material contents. In addition, the
inside of the syringe barrel
forms now a perfect cylinder
to reduce additional stress on
the material that is being expressed.
With the increasing number of patients who are requesting tooth bleaching or
have already bleached their
teeth, two new lighter shades

of dentin are available to
match even the whitest of
teeth. These shades are UD
0.5 and UD 0. The company
says even with the these
two additional shades, dentist
will still need fewer total
shades with ENAMEL plus
HRi than with other systems
on the market. The system
gives dentists the ability to
easily create restorations of
any shade that are essentially
‘clones’ of natural teeth, they
added.

splitting available. The Chisels come in two diameters of 4 and 7.5 mm and in a straight and
curved version.

The set consists of straight and bayonet/angulated Osteotomes available in six sizes and

Deep chamfer preparation with NTI instruments (DTI/NTI)

Among others, new instruments for optimal
deep chamfer preparations will be on display at
the NTI Kahla booth in hall 11.2. According to
the company, the abrasive-free tip facilitates
contouring the cervical margin and produces
an optimal deep chamfer to meet the requirements for all-porcelain restorations. The diameter 015 of the successful 879SE instrument
additionally facilitates circumferential preparation of premolars and molars and reduces
the time required for preparation. The two
longer instruments will be complemented by
the shorter torpedo shape 878 with diameters
of 012 and 015 that allows optimal deep chamfer preparation even in the dorsal region of the
molars and restricted access to the mouth.
For more than twelve years, NTI-Kahla has
contributed to the improvement of oral health.
The company based in Kahla in Germany is
producing and distributing rotary dental instruments for both dentists and dental technicians. They specially focus on innovative products for processing ceramic materials as well
as rotary instruments that meet the high demands of modern dentistry, such as diamond
instruments, tungsten carbide cutters or polishers.

Introducing SuniRay – from the value leader in digital imaging.

A perfect balance.

Instruments line up (DTI/NTI)

Being an internationally active company,
NTI Kahla now distributes its products in over
90 countries. Direct marketing in Germany
first began in 1998 and has been expanded over
the years to guarantee better service and individual customer care. Advanced production
techniques and permanent monitoring are the
basis for their high-quality products, the company says. Having been the first rotary instruments manufacturer to be certified according
to DIN EN ISO 9001, as well as DIN EN ISO
13485, it is subject to the regulations for manufacturing medical devices, a fact reflected in
the allocation of the CE mark.
NTI Kahla is closely working with universities and master schools in terms of training
courses, professional lectures or long-term
studies to bring forth various products that are
up-to-date and directed at the user’s needs.
