Last day for seminars, workshops and

the 3-D Printing & Digital Dentistry
Conference, the Dental Laboratory
Technician Program, the 10th annual
Premier Dental Hygienists’ Program
and programs provided by the American Dental Assistants Association
and the New York State Association
of Endodontists.
All of this is to say, it’s as big a day
as any of the preceding days of the
event.
Among the highlights are the final
two sessions at the exhibit hall’s 425seat Live Dentistry arena: “Executing
Accurate Aesthetic Dentistry” at 9:45
a.m., and “Guided Implant Surgery”
at 2 p.m.
Each demonstration is worth three

C.E. credits, and neither requires a
tuition fee.
Also, on the exhibit floor, you’re
invited to drop by the Social Media
Café sponsored by Patterson Dental
and Gentle Wave Procedure. Open
from 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m., the Social
Media Café has a primary focus
of helping dental professionals
jump-start their social media presence through advice from experts,
information about new tools and
content and TED Talks by popular
influencers.
The informal structure includes
the opportunity to grab a cup of coffee
or tea and easily interact with fellow
professionals.
The Social Media Café is in booth

Everything winds down tonight
with food, a cash bar, music and dancing at the Wednesday Night Happen-

3
ing, taking place from 6:30–9 p.m.
And, as has long been the case with
the GNYDM schedule, the end of the
meeting coincides with the famous
Rockefeller Center annual tree lighting ceremony on Rockefeller Plaza,
between West 48th and 51st streets
and Fifth and Sixth avenues.
If you’re willing to brave the huge
crowd and gridlocked streets, the
event is free and open to the public
on a first-come, first-served basis.
Keep in mind, though, the ceremony
also airs live on NBC from 8-10 p.m.,
and the tree remains lit daily from
5:30–11:30 p.m.
The tree lighting is a fitting symbolic end to an iconic meeting that
in essence opened with the famed
Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
And that’s the same schedule next
year, too, with the 2020 GNYDM set
for Nov. 27–Dec. 2.

The benefits of bonding meet the
simplicity of traditional cementing
By Dr. Joseph Kim
n
BISCO’s next-generation resin
cement combines the benefits of bonding with the simplicity of a traditional
cementing protocol.
TheraCem is a dual-cured, calciumand fluoride-releasing, self-adhesive
resin cement indicated for luting
crowns, bridges, inlays, onlays and
all types of posts. Delivering a strong
bond to zirconia and most substrates,
along with easy cleanup and high
radiopacity, TheraCem offers clinicians reliable and durable cementation of indirect restorations, according to the company.
The self-adhesive feature means
no etching and no priming or bonding of prepared dental surfaces.
This means greater predictability
in preparations with subgingival

margins, where etchants or bonding
agents may cause bleeding.
With TheraCem, a clean, prepped
dentin or enamel surface is all that
is needed to achieve excellent bond
strengths, with the added benefit
of sustained calcium and fluoride
release. TheraCem also forms a strong
bond to most substrates, including zirconia restorations, without the need
for separate chemical primers.
TheraCem is easy to clean up
with hand instruments and floss.
For deeper subgingival margins,

TheraCem is kind to the gingiva,
although the margins should be thoroughly inspected to ensure complete
removal of excess cement.
Because of innovative chemistry,
TheraCem achieves a high degree of
chemical conversion, which ensures
long-term durability without the need
for refrigeration when it is not being

used. For clinicians, this means that
peace of mind can be nearby and
ready to use in every operatory.
All of these time-saving features
translate to decreased chair time and
frustration for both clinicians and
patients. TheraCem is true simplicity
and durability through cutting-edge
chemistry.

From scan to one-visit delivery:
Moving at the speed of digital
By Glidewell Dental Staff
n Advancements in digital dental
technology were the industry story
for 2019 — and for good reason. CAD/
CAM design tools, intraoral scanners
and chairside milling in dental practices are increasingly giving dentists
the power to provide convenient service and excellent results to their
patients while streamlining their
workflow, cutting costs and maximizing profit.
Those dentists who have already
opened the door to digital dentistry
in the form of digital impressions can
attest to the fact that simply adopting
that one digital change already contains plenty of benefits.
Enter the glidewell.io™ In-Office

As for the scanning part? That’s
where your existing scanner comes
in: glidewell.io connects seamlessly
with iTero Element® intraoral scan-

Element, the process of implementing glidewell.io couldn’t be simpler,
the company asserts. If you’re not
an iTero user, though, don’t despair:
glidewell.io is compatible with, and
can be paired with, any scanner on

Uses for Biodentine include
non-traditional clinics, hospitals,
special needs and community health
By Mark Roettger, DDS, Chief of Dental
Service, University of Minnesota
Medical Center
n
Hospitals, special needs and
community health centers often see
patients who present with advanced
dental needs and complications without insurance or public program dental coverage.
Our goal as dentists should always
be to optimize oral health for all our
patients. Most patients want to save
as many teeth as possible, but the
expense of endodontic treatment and
proper restorative care are beyond
their ability to pay.
This is true for adults and children
alike, but these problems can be especially problematic in children and
adolescents.
Often these patients present with
multiple large carious lesions. Some
are non-restorable but others are. The
best option for restoring a tooth with
a large carious lesion is to maintain
pulp vitality.
Biodentine® is in a new class of
materials that has high biocompatibility and bioactive properties, both
important in saving pulp vitality
while treating large carious lesions.
Biodentine’s bioactivity allows it to
assist the dentin-pulp complex to
form a dentin bridge over areas where
dental caries have breached the dentin and invaded the pulp.
In our hospital dental department,
we have replaced Mineral Trioxide
Aggregate (MTA) products with Biodentine. We have done this because
of Biodentine’s superior handling
properties combined with outcomes
similar or superior to MTA.
Properties that are important to our
hospital practice are set time, sealing
capability, compressive strength and
non-staining formula.
Set times are important in the
hospital practice as patients are often
in the operating room or emergency
department and require exceptional
care in the shortest time possible.
Biodentine has a significant shorter
set time (10 to 12 mins) than MTA (175
mins), allowing you to accomplish
your procedure in a shorter period
of time.
The unique setting reaction of
Biodentine allows for more com-

concomitant periodontal injury. (Photo/Provided by Mark Roettger, DDS)

plete sealing of the material at the
margins.
Another superior property of Biodentine over MTA is compressive
strength. The mechanical strength
of Biodentine at final set is more
than two times greater than MTA,
which allows us greater flexibility

in applications. Finally, the opacifier
used in the formulation of Biodentine
does not contribute to staining as the
formulation of MTA.

Conclusion

Septodont has brought to dentistry
a high-tech dental material that is

very biocompatible and can placed
directly on pulp tissue without toxicity.
Biodentine can be used whenever
dentin is damaged.
Its bioactivity allows Biodentine
to interact with dental tissues to
promote osteo and angiogenic activity, which promotes pulp and tissue
healing.
These properties make Biodentine
ideal for use in restorative dentistry
in deep caries excavation as a direct
or indirect pulp capping material.
The same properties make Biodentine
useful in pediatric dentistry when
doing primary tooth pulpotomies and
permanent tooth apexification procedures.
In endodontics, its bioactivity
makes Biodentine a material of choice
in repairing perforations, treating
resorptions, as a retrograde filling
material and in new endodontic
regeneration procedures.

New hands-free infrared technology
By Designs for Vision Staff
n Designs for Vision is introducing
patented hands-free infrared technology with the WireLess™ IR HDi™ and
the Micro IR HDi headlights.
These headlights feature HDi,
Designs for Vision’s advanced photonic design that provides uniform
light distribution with maximum
intensity. The patent-pending feature
optically focuses the light from the
LED to provide 45 percent more light
with uniform distribution.
The patented IR feature enables
better infection control by letting
practitioners operate the headlight
without touching the system. The IR
headlights use a built-in infrared signal to enable the user to turn the light
on or off simply and safely. Onboard
biometrics sense the position of the
headlight to filter out unintended
signals while working.

DayLite WireLess Mini, providing a
lightweight cordless solution with
light intensity comparable to many
corded headlights. You can choose
high-definition imaging with either
a wired or wireless design to meet
your preference, and any of the HDi
headlights will illuminate the entire
oral cavity.
Designs for Vision’s WireLess
headlights free you from being teth-

ered to a battery pack. The simple
modular designs uncouple the headlights from a specific frame or single
pair of loupes. Prior technology married a cordless light to one pair of
loupes via a cumbersome integration
of the batteries and electronics into
the frame. The compact design of the
LED DayLite WireLess headlights is
independent of any frame/loupes.
The LED DayLite Micro HDi uses

the new high-definition imaging with
a very lightweight headlight in combination with the Micro power pack.
The Micro power pack is the lightest
and smallest power pack. The complete unit includes two power packs,
and each power pack can run up to
10 hours.
Designs for Vision is also featuring the REALITY 5 Star rated Micro
3.5EF Scopes and Micro 4.5EF Scopes
using a revolutionary optical design
that reduces the size of the prismatic
telescope by 50 percent and reduces
the weight by 40 percent while providing an expanded field view of the

Consider the use of non-surgical laser
applications in treatment of facial esthetics
By Harvey S. Shiffman, DDS
n
Erbium Yag and Neodymium
Yag are two of the most researched
wavelengths in medicine and dentistry. Both of these wavelengths
are found in our Fotona Lightwalker

in mucosal tissues and supporting
tissues of the face and lips.

Indications

For patients with age- and lifestylerelated loss of facial volume, elasticity and dryness all caused by loss
of collagen. Also as a preventative
therapy to maintain “young collagen.” Patients who do not want surgical intervention or artificial materials

This is an exciting time to be a DSO
or group practice leader, the ADSO
asserts, and through the cooperation
and support of the community, the
organization is able to share its learnings in order to support the development of this business model.
This year for the first time, the
Summit annual meeting will have
sessions and panels organized into
a variety of tracks to help assist
attendees in determining exactly
which educational opportunities will
be most valuable to them. The 2020
Summit tracks are:
• Leadership
• Growth & Development
• Compliance
• Partnering for Growth
• Human Resources
• Marketing
• Technology
The Partnering for Growth track
will include topics touched upon in
the other six tracks but specifically
from the standpoint of emerging DSOs
in the earliest stages of their growth.

Your new and improved
guide to New York City
What you thought
was old is new again

of the world’s most priceless works
are famously on display in New York
City. What you might not know, however, is that The Museum of Modern
Art — known affectionately to New
Yorkers as the MoMA — has recently
undergone a massive renovation and
expansion, which was unveiled in a
grand reopening on Oct. 21.
Now, masterpieces such as Picasso’s “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon,” van
Gogh’s “The Starry Night” and Monet’s “Water Lilies” are presented in
new galleries, juxtaposed alongside
unexpected works by contemporary
artists.
If you go: MoMA is located at 11 W.
53rd St. It’s open daily from 10 a.m. to
5:30 p.m., except on Fridays when it is
open until 9 p.m. Admission is $25 for
adults and $18 for seniors. Children
get in free. It’s free for everyone on
Fridays starting at 5:30 p.m. Expect
crowds and long lines, especially on
Friday evenings. You can buy tickets
at www.moma.org.
More art: Also not to be missed is
the Metropolitan Museum of Art, at

By Fred Michmershuizen, today Staff
n
New York City is constantly
changing. For visitors, there are more
attractions, more things to see and
do, than ever before. Even many of
the city’s most famous tourist spots,
such as the Empire State Building and
Liberty Island, have been revamped
within the past year!
Therefore if you are in town for the
Greater New York Dental Meeting and
want to do a little sightseeing, you can
have the world at your feet. Read on
for some ideas, and don’t forget your
selfie stick.

The Empire State Building

The Empire State Building — New
York City’s most famous skyscraper,
which is located five blocks due east
from the Javits Center — has completely reimagined its experience
for sightseers. The changes, which
were unveiled this fall, include a new
museum on the second floor. From
there, you can be whisked to the main
observatory on the 86th floor. You can
also visit a completely refurbished
“top deck” observatory, on the 102nd
floor. The views from both levels are
spectacular, especially when the sky
is clear.
If you go: Enter on West 34th Street.
You can visit any time during the day
or even very late at night. Hours are
from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. Prices start at $38
for adults and $32 for children and go
up from there. Advance tickets are
available at www.esbnyc.com. There’s
also an app, called Empire State Building Guide.
Even more views: You can also visit
the Top of the Rock Observation Deck,
at Rockefeller Center, 30 Rockefeller
Plaza, www.topoftherocknyc.com.
There’s also One World Observatory, at the top of One World Trade
Center, www.oneworldobservatory.

Hudson Yards and Vessel

Also located near the Javits Center is
Hudson Yards, a new, modern public
square that includes a shopping mall,
restaurants and live performances,

all amid a cluster of high-rise luxury
apartment buildings. The visual centerpiece of Hudson Yards is called
Vessel, which is an interlocking grid
of staircases that can be climbed or
simply admired from ground level.
This iconic structure, which opened
to the public in March, has quickly
become one of the most photographed
attractions in New York.
If you go: To visit Hudson Yards
from the Javits Center, simply cross
11th Avenue and go right (south). It’s
free to enter Vessel, but you need
tickets, which are given out on a first-

come, first-served basis. You can get
the tickets on site beginning each
day at 9:30 a.m., or go online to www.
hudsonyardsnewyork.com.
A nearby stroll: From Hudson Yards
you can enter The High Line, www.thehighline.org, an elevated rail platform
that has been turned into a public
park. It snakes its way down into the
West Village, offering unmatched
views of urban street life. Winter
hours are daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Museum of Modern Art

If you love art, you know that some

This past May, a new Statue of Liberty Museum, www.statueofliberty
museum.org, opened on Liberty
Island. The museum tells the story of
how the 150-foot copper statue was
conceived and built as a gift from
the French people. On display is the
statue’s original torch, as it appeared
atop the monument in 1886, as well as
copper replicas of Lady Liberty’s face
and foot.
If you go: Admission to the new
Statue of Liberty Museum is free,
but to get there you have to take a
boat from either Battery Park or from
Liberty State Park in New Jersey. Visit
Statue Cruises, www.statuecruises.
com, for tickets and information.
Prices start at $18.50 for adults and
$9 for children.
More bang for your buck: On the
way to Liberty Island, your boat will
also stop at Ellis Island, which also
has a museum. It’s definitely worth
visiting. And be sure to check out the
glorious views of the Lower Manhattan skyline on the way to and from.
