Dr. Andy Brown completes term as FDA president By Florida Dental Association Staff n Florida Dental Association President Dr. Andy Brown is nearing the end of his one-year term. He took the helm during a challenging time, as the nation was in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic and dentistry was making important adjustments in order to safely treat patients. A critical role during his term was ensuring clear communication to members and the public. Brown regularly served as one of the faces of the FDA during media interviews that provided sound advice for patients who may have been nervous about returning to dental offices. In addition, even though he became Dr. Andy Brown, the Florida Dental Association’s outgoing president. 5 an expert at attending and leading Zoom meetings, Brown pushed for a return to normalcy through the implementation of safe and successful in-person FDA meetings. This included board meetings, encouraging an in-person FDC2021 and assisting Dr. Dan Gesek (chair) with planning of the 2021 Florida Mission of Mercy (FLA-MOM) in Jacksonville, which is now scheduled for July after having been postponed twice because of COVID-19. This year marks a special milestone for FLA-MOM because it’s the first time that funding was included in the state budget — an accomplishment that will benefit the 2022 event in Tallahassee. Other key successes during Brown’s term include more fully developing relationships with elected officials and the Board of Dentistry; motivating the FDA staff to achieve record membership numbers; and an expansion of the book of business for FDA Services. He also has maintained meaningful relationships with the district and affiliate dental associations, as well as the American Dental Association. During his year as president, Brown worked to further the FDA’s mission of helping members succeed. Brown will officially pass the gavel to President-elect Dr. Dave Boden on Saturday during the House of Delegates. If you see him during FDC2021 (or any other time), please be sure to thank him for his dedicated service.[5] => Florida Dental Convention — June 24–26, 2021 exhibitors 5 Come expand your vision Check out Designs for Vision in booth No. 21 By Designs for Vision Staff n Designs for Vision will have several loupe and headlight designs on hand for attendees to view here at the Florida Dental Convention. Designs for Vision will also have on hand patented hands-free infrared technology with the WireLess IR HDi and the Micro IR HDi headlights. The headlights’ patented IR feature allows you to operate the headlight without touching the system. The IR headlights use a built-in infrared signal to allow the user to turn the light on or off simply and safely, the company states, and onboard biometrics sense the position of the headlight to filter out unintended signals while working. Additionally, Designs for Vision’s WireLess™ headlights free you from being tethered to a battery pack. The simple modular designs uncouple the headlights from a specific frame or single pair of loupes, and the compact design of the LED DayLite® WireLess headlights are independent of any frame/loupes. Laser esthetics with the LightWalker By Fotona Staff n Did you know that in addition to its advanced dental treatments, the Fotona LightWalker ® laser can also offer patients facial esthetic rejuvenation options? Skin rejuvenation treatments are in high demand, and many are looking for options that naturally enhance, without injectables. Two treatments that fit patients’ needs are SmoothLase,™ a wrinkle reduction treatment for around the mouth, and LipLase,™ a gentle yet effective treatment in providing patients with fuller, enhanced lips. Enabled with unique Fotona pulse characteristics, both SmoothLase and LipLase use the photothermal capabilities of the LightWalker laser to convert and initiate the formation of new and more elastic collagen. Here in Orlando To learn more about the Fotona LightWalker laser and the SmoothLase and LipLase, stop by the Fotona booth, No. 1123. After years of practicing restorative dentistry, Harvey Shiffman, DDS, said: “I noticed that after delivering beautiful smile makeovers, my patients would look in the mirror and point to wrinkles and say, ‘I hate this.’ Fotona’s LightWalker has given me many options for facial rejuvenation, ‘turning back the clock,’ with both intra-oral and extra-oral options to help patients look better, feel better and complete that cosmetic makeover.” How does SmoothLase work? The characteristics of the proprietary non-ablative “Smooth Mode” pulse delivers intense heat to the tissues, simultaneously shrinking and tightening existing collagen bundles while stimulating the creation of new collagen. A specialized handpiece delivers the unique Smooth Mode pulses to the intraoral mucosa. Treating the entirety of the oral cavity results in the tightening of the skin around the mouth and cheeks, leading to significant reduction in nasolabial folds. With LipLase, the laser delivers targeted heat pulses into the lips to stimulate new collaged formation resulting in fuller, more defined and enhanced lips. “The LightWalker is great for facial rejuvenation, which has become a very popular procedure to look and feel younger without undergoing invasive surgical procedures,” Shiffman said.
