More than 400 courses are being offered here at the 2013 Yankee Dental Congress. The Massachusetts Dental Society
— in cooperation with the Connecticut,
Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island
and Vermont dental associations — has
put together an educational program
with some of the country’s leading clinicians.
The theme of this year’s meeting is
“Building Bridges Through Innovation,
Technology, Wellness & Inspiration.”
In the lecture halls, here at the Boston

Convention & Exhibition Center, there is
plenty of inspiration to be found.
In one presentation on Thursday, “New
Opportunities With Vacuum Forming,”
Thomas Zaleske taught attendees how
to recognize the differences between
mouthguard materials and how each is
finished. Keystone Industries supplied
materials for this course.
Course offerings here in Boston continue through Sunday. In addition, there
are also numerous continuing education
opportunities available on the exhibit
hall floor. Pick up the official program or
download the Yankee Dental Congress
app from iTunes for more details.

decreasing cancellations,” says Lisa Frascolla. The company also offers a variety
of helpful templates, as well as training
and marketing tools.
• Camellix (booth No. 721) is offering
a line of products for the treatment and

TRIOS comes to North America
3Shape, a global leader in 3-D scanning
technologies and CAD/CAM software
for dental applications, has declared
“all systems go” for nationwide sales of
its TRIOS® solution in the United States
and Canada.
3Shape has signed up a wide network of
national and local resellers to distribute
TRIOS to dentists, dental specialists, dental schools and more throughout North
America.
According to the company, 3Shape’s
strong distribution foundation has
been carefully constructed to ensure
optimal geographical coverage and fulfillment of 3Shape’s high standards for
customer service and support of its products.
3Shape representatives say TRIOS resellers are all experienced dental supplier professionals and are amply trained
by 3Shape to install and support TRIOS
for customers in local clinics.

Certification and full regulatory
compliance in place
The TRIOS system as a medical device is
continuously developed under the strict
regulations of the FDA and ISO 13485 requirements. 3Shape has passed all final
safety tests and production inspections
required for authorized sales and marketing of the TRIOS system in the United
States.

Closing in on complete digital
workflows between clinic and lab

Here at Yankee

TRIOS enables dentists to rapidly capture the complete intraoral situation and
send the 3-D model directly to the lab. It
does not require pre-spraying the teeth.
The system clinically validates the
impression and includes tools that allow dentists to edit their scans. Labs and
dentists can communicate about the
case using 3-D design visualizations, annotations and messages. The full-digital
workflow is designed to enhance close
collaboration with the lab and allow the
dentist to focus more on treating patients.
By utilizing the lab’s CAD/CAM expertise, along with its wide range of indications and materials possibilities, dentists
can provide their patients with more
treatment options and restorations of
the best possible quality and fit, according to the company.

To see some 3Shape products for yourself,
stop by the company’s booth, No. 2227. For
more information about 3Shape, please refer
to www.3shapedental.com or visit the company on www.facebook.com/3shape.

Spreading the news
In recent months, 3Shape has been touring the United States, demonstrating
TRIOS for dental professionals. According to the company, the success of these
live events affirms the great interest
in this new digital impression solution
throughout the U.S. dental market.
“We are very excited to bring stateof-the-art intraoral scanner technology to the largest dental market in the
world,” said Flemming Thorup, 3Shape’s
president and CEO. “The many North
American labs that are using 3Shape Den-

tal System, or those who order our TRIOS
InBox separately, will be able to connect
with clinics using TRIOS. We believe that
3Shape will soon become a strong brand
in clinics — just as it has in labs.”
In order to further strengthen support and services and closely back up
its partners, 3Shape recently established
a new office near Los Angeles, ensuring
business-hour coverage throughout the
country.

About 3Shape
3Shape is a Danish company specializing in the development and marketing
of 3-D scanners and CAD/CAM software
solutions designed for the creation, processing, analysis and management of
high-quality 3-D data for application
in complex manufacturing processes.
3Shape envisions the age of the “full
digital dental lab,” and its more than 130

developers provide innovation power toward reaching this goal.
3Shape’s solutions aim to empower
dental professionals through automation of real workflows, and its systems
are applied in thousands of labs in more
than 90 countries worldwide. With TRIOS, 3Shape now brings its expertise and
innovation power directly to dentists.
3Shape boosts its distributor support
network with a second-line support
force of more than 30 in-house experts
placed in five support and service centers
around the globe. 3Shape is a privately
held company headquartered in Copenhagen, with the market’s largest team
dedicated to scanner and software development for the dental segment. That
team is based in Denmark and Ukraine
with production facilities in Poland and
business development and support offices in New Jersey and Asia.

cameras and allows the T3i to work with modern wireless macro flashes. Doing
away with the flash power pack and cord results in a lighter, more balanced camera.
The Rebel T3i is an 18-megapixel digital camera that features an articulating LCD
screen and a 1080p HD video mode.
PhotoMed offers two wireless flash options for the T3i as well as two traditional
macro flashes and four macro lens options.

Clinical benefits of the Inclusive
Tooth Replacement Solution
By Darrin W. Wiederhold, DMD, MS,
and Bradley C. Bockhorst, DMD

A hallmark of the most successful
modern clinicians is the ability to strike
a balance between a daily load of 12 to 16
patients and maintaining the same high
standard of care. No easy task when it
comes to implant cases.
Currently, the manufacturer is responsible for the components, the laboratory
for the restoration — after receiving the
impressions. Restoratively, that’s like
erecting a house on an existing foundation, limiting the builder. Proper esthetics requires soft-tissue contouring that
begins at implant placement, making
stock components less than ideal.
With the new Inclusive® Tooth Replacement Solution from Glidewell Laboratories, custom-designed temporary
components allow for immediate provisionalization specific to each patient,
and a matching custom impression
coping communicates the final gingival architecture to the laboratory. Add
the implant, surgical drills, prosthetic
guide, final custom abutment and final BruxZir® Solid Zirconia restoration
(Glidewell), and the clinician receives all
the components necessary to place, provisionalize and restore the implant.
The Inclusive Tooth Replacement Solution supports a streamlined workflow that
ensures predictability and long-term success. Armed with the endgame in mind
and the tools and road map to get there,
experienced and novice clinicians can
place and restore dental implants with
greater confidence than ever before.

For more information about the Inclusive Tooth Replacement Solution, stop by the Glidewell Laboratories booth, No. 1703.

Consultation and data collection
For single-tooth replacement or fullmouth rehabilitation, comprehensive
treatment planning is paramount. You’ll
need:
• Full-arch upper/lower impressions
(PVS)
• Bite registration
• Full-mouth radiographs (panoramic
and CBCT scan, as needed. Note: If you do
not have a CBCT scanner, refer patient to
an imaging center.)
• Shade match of existing dentition
• Preoperative photos
Once you’ve selected a diameter and
length of implant, forward the diagnostic materials (impressions, models,
bite registration, shade, implant size) to
Glidewell for fabrication of the custom
components. The laboratory will pour
and articulate the models and assemble
the components, delivered to you in an
all-inclusive box (Fig. 1):
• Prosthetic guide (Fig. 2a)
• Custom temporary abutment (Fig.2a)

Fig. 2a: Prosthetic guide, custom temporary abutment, BioTemps provisional
crown, custom healing abutment and custom impression coping.

• BioTemps® provisional crown (Glidewell) (Fig. 2a)
• Custom healing abutment (Fig.2a)
• Custom impression coping (Fig. 2a)
• Surgical drills (Fig.2)
• Inclusive Tapered Implant (Glidewell)
(Fig.2)

Day of surgery protocol
Place the box contents alongside your
usual surgical armamentarium. Confirm
the prosthetic guide fits snugly around
the teeth. Visually confirm the proposed
location of the implant osteotomy correlates with your planned location.
After placing the implant, decide based
on the level of primary stability whether
to place the custom healing abutment or
the custom temporary abutment and accompanying BioTemps crown. Either option will begin sculpting the soft-tissue
architecture around the implant to develop the future emergence profile.

Fig. 3: Final Inclusive custom abutment and final BruxZir or
IPS e.max crown.

If there is adequate attached tissue, use
a tissue punch to remove the soft tissue
over the osteotomy site; otherwise, reflect a flap. Note that the margin of the
custom temporary abutment is set at approximately 2 mm.
Depending on the thickness of the soft
tissue, the abutment can be adjusted and
BioTemps crown relined. The custom
healing abutment or BioTemps crown
must be 1 mm to 1.5 mm out of occlusion
to avoid occlusal stress.
Store custom impression coping with
patient chart for the restorative phase.

Healing phase
Schedule monthly follow-up appointments to ensure osseointegration is progressing and to adjust the provisional
restoration.

Restorative phase: final impressions
Upon successful osseointegration, the
restorative phase begins. Contours of the
custom impression coping match those
of the custom healing abutment or custom temporary abutment, so it’s simple
to remove the custom abutment, seat the
impression coping and take an accurate

full-arch final impression using a closedtray or open-tray.
Complete a simple prescription form
included with the original box, select
your final custom abutment and final
shade for your BruxZir or IPS e.max®
(Ivoclar Vivadent; Amherst, N.Y.) restoration, and simply forward these items to
Glidewell. There are no additional laboratory fees.

Delivery of final prosthesis
On the day of delivery, remove the custom temporary abutment and clean all
debris from inside and around the implant. Try in the final Inclusive® Custom
Abutment (Glidewell) and BruxZir or IPS
e.max crown (Fig. 3). Check the contours,
contacts and occlusion and adjust as
needed.
The final occlusion should be light on
the implant-retained crown, with forces
directed along the long axis to minimize lateral forces. The abutment screw
is tightened to 35 Ncm, head of the abutment screw covered and crown cemented. All excess cement must be removed.
Instruct your patient about home care,
and set a recall schedule.

COMPONEER: A new innovation
in anterior composite bonding
Creation of new patient smiles has
evolved during the years from a freehand, challenging artistic procedure to
one that builds and enhances patient
smiles and self-esteem. The evolution
from a laboratory-fabricated porcelain
veneer has been driven by dental practices seeking to offer a similar result that
can be enjoyed by a larger audience.
This change in the smile landscape can
bring significant opportunities to dental
practices looking to extend their services
to a larger patient base.
With COMPONEER™, Coltène presents
a new and easy-to-use system for restoring anterior teeth. Developed by Coltène
and tested during several years by professionals, including noted Swiss dentist
Dr. Mario Besek, COMPONEER offers a
system of polymerized, prefabricated,
nanohybrid-composite enamel shells
that combine the advantages of direct
composite restoration with the advantages of prefabricated veneers.
The pre-shaped COMPONEER veneers
are available in four different sizes, and
they are easy to use for single-tooth reconstruction as well. Until this introduction, you could choose between a
directly modeled composite restoration
or elaborate, indirect veneer technology.
With COMPONEER, the Direct Composite Veneer System adds a new dimension
to existing treatment options and gives
you and your patients new economic
choices.
For patients, the advantages begin with
a new smile after just one visit, opening
the possibility for smile makeovers before such significant events as weddings,
proms or job interviews. The minimally
invasive procedure and conservation of
natural tooth substance can help reduce
patient stress. Patients can be given a
naturally esthetic smile in a single session and come away with a “smile to go.”
Advantages for the dental office include the ability to customize composite veneers using a choice of veneer
and luting composite shades built from
Coltène’s Synergy D6 technology. This
technology gives the clinician a precision matched veneer and composite
bonding resin system that uses the same
surface morphology and shading to give
superior results.
Placement and finishing of a nanohybrid composite is familiar to practitioners, and COMPONEER is adjustable and
repairable, unlike traditional porcelain
veneers.
The COMPONEER Direct Composite
Veneer System is clinically indicated for
a wide variety of applications, including
treatment of caries and the optimization of old restorations, abrasion/erosion of anterior teeth or old restorations
and tooth fractures. It is also used for
esthetic/cosmetic indications, including
extending incisors, repositioning alignment, brightening discolored teeth or
closing diastemas.
Coltène offers a complete system. In addition to composite veneers, the system

includes matched composite (SYNERGY

special instruments and comprehensive
information material for dentists and
patients.

A faster way to seal
For decades, dentists and hygienists
have had no alternative but to use harsh
phosphoric acid etching to improve the
bondability of dental sealants to enamel. In doing so, they have lost countless
hours to applying acids, waiting, rinsing
and drying.
With all these added steps, perhaps the
greater issue is how many failures have
resulted from trying to shortcut procedures? Indeed, working with phosphoric
acid is always a double-edged sword. If
not left on long enough, one risks failure;
leave it on too long and healthy enamel
is eroded.
Thanks to advances in adhesive technology and a new pit and fissure sealant
from Shofu, dental professionals don’t
have to choose between a secure bond
and lost time and preservation of tooth
structure anymore.
BeautiSealant from Shofu is a faster,
easier and gentler pit and fissure sealant
system that completely eliminates the
need for phosphoric acid etch and rinse
steps, while still maintaining equivalent
bond strengths to acid etched competitors.
Considering these steps represent a 40
percent to 60 percent reduction in working time, that extra productivity can go a
long way toward keeping a practice profitable. In these difficult economic times,
every liberated minute counts.

Fast application
The instructions for BeautiSealant are
simple:
• Apply the primer to a clean tooth and
leave for five seconds.
• Air-dry five seconds.
• Apply the sealant.
• Light-cure 10 seconds LED (20 seconds halogen).

shear bond strengths remain at levels
that meet or exceed market-leading sealants at 19.5 MPa.

Smooth application
BeautiSealant Sealant is an easy-to-apply
sealant, optimized for smooth, bubblefree consistency. Achieve precise delivery without the common issue of overfilling with a specially designed no-ooze
syringe and a tiny 0.27 gauge needle tip.
This improved control over the flowability of the sealant allows placement of just
the right amount of material, reducing
the common occurrence of overfilling.

Secure bond, gentle on enamel

Sustained remineralization from
giomer fillers

BeautiSealant Primer contains dualadhesive monomers (carboxylic and
phosphonic acid) that thoroughly penetrate and prepare pits and fissures for
bonding to the sealant, forming a chemical bond to calcium in the enamel. Unlike traditional sealants, which require
phosphoric acid etching, severely demineralizing and dehydrating healthy teeth,
Shofu’s self-etching primer is significantly less acidic, helping to preserve healthy
tooth structure.
Despite this lack of acid etch and rinse
steps and a HEMA-free composition,

Shofu’s
proprietary
Surface
PreReacted Glass (S-PRG) filler particles are
not only pre-charged with fluoride during manufacturing, they also recharge
when fluoride concentrations in the
mouth are high.
Simply put, household dental hygiene
products, such as fluoridated toothpaste,
allow BeautiSealant to provide sustained
remineralization benefits to adjacent
tooth structure over the life of the sealant.
In addition to fluoride, S-PRG filler also
releases five other ions: sodium, stron-

tium, aluminum, silicate and borate, all

GELATO
PROPHY PASTE
Keystone Industries’ newly reformulated Gelato Prophy Paste has received rave reviews from the dental
field, according to the company.
Recently, the gelato paste was
evaluated in more than 2,500 uses
by 35 consultants. Overall, the paste
received a 91 percent clinical rating. Forty percent of consultants
found Gelato Prophy Paste better
than other prophy pastes they had
used, and 43 percent found it to be
equivalent. Sixty-three percent of
consultants would switch to Gelato
Prophy Paste, and 80 percent would
recommend it.
Reviewer comments included
“easy to rinse,” and patients “liked
the flavor variety.” One tester said it
“does not feel gritty in the mouth.”
Gelato Prophylaxis Paste provides
smooth, pliable and splatter-free application. The 1.23-percent fluoride
ion gelato paste is good for highluster polishing and stain removal,
but it remains gentle on the enamel
with minimal enamel loss. Gelato
paste comes in boxes of 200 individual disposable cups. For more options, the paste comes in 12-ounce
jars (exports only).
The paste is available in four different grits (fine, medium, course
and extra-course) for various stain
removal needs. Typically, hygienists
use the fine grit for routine use, and
the medium grit gives a little more
stain removal power. The coarse
pastes are required for removing
moderate to heavy stains.
Keystone Industries continues to
put forward a large assortment of
gelato flavors, including piña colada,
orange sherbet mint, cherry, bubble
gum and raspberry.

Get social in Seattle
AACD 2013 promises networking
opportunities, camaraderie
For those who love attending dental
conferences for the camaraderie and
networking opportunities, AACD 2013
will offer several social events to help
members connect with other dental professionals.
The American Academy of Cosmetic
Dentistry (AACD) will host AACD 2013
from April 24–27 in Seattle at the Washington State Convention Center.
In addition to organizing a lineup of
world-class dental educators, a number
of social events are planned to help attendees make the most of their time in
the city.
“One of the things that sets the AACD’s
conferences apart from other meetings
is our incredible social events,” said Ron
Goodlin, AACD president.
“Being social at AACD 2013 is almost as
important as attending workshops and
lectures. Connecting with like-minded
professionals and being inspired by their
work enhances your perspective on the
field. Networking opportunities in Seattle are everywhere — and they’re a
valuable part of your conference experience!”
On April 24, to kick off this year’s annual meeting, the AACD will host an
evening welcome reception at the Experience Music Project (EMP) Museum,
which is located at the base of the Seattle
Space Needle. The reception is included
in attendees’ tuition.
At the EMP, attendees will have a
chance to meet friends, enjoy refreshments, relax and learn about music’s
impact throughout history. The EMP will
help attendees explore musical revolutions from jazz to blues to the birth of
rock ‘n’ roll and hip-hop.
On April 25, the AACD Charitable
Foundation will host the Celebration
of Smiles fundraiser, which benefits
the AACD Charitable Foundation’s Give
Back a Smile (GBAS) program. GBAS helps
restore the smiles and lives of domestic
violence survivors through the help of
volunteer dentists and dental teams.
Celebration of Smiles will take place
at the Tap House Grill, which is walking
distance from the Washington State Convention Center. The Tap House is a Seattle
staple that offers more than 160 beers on
tap, including local craft brews. Wine and
cocktails will also be available.
Tickets for the event can be purchased
through the AACD’s online registration
system at www.aacdconference.com.
In addition to the main events, there
are other opportunities to be social in
Seattle. The AACD hosts daily breakfasts
and lunches in the exhibit hall so attendees can re-energize and chat with colleagues.
To see who’s on this year’s lineup, check
out the AACD’s digital version of the preliminary conference guide, available at
