at the 2018 CDA Presents in Anaheim
didn’t appear to reduce attendance,
with seats at both locations in the
exhibit hall consistently filling for the
free one-hour presentations.
The Spot Educational Theater sessions — three on the Hall C stage and two
in the Hall D location — wrap up today
with lectures from industry experts at
10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m.

Today’s topics are: “Rich Dentist,
Working Dentist,” “Mandated Reporting,” “Successful Codes Used for Medical Billing in Dentistry,” “Help on Yelp:
Online Reputation Marketing — The
Key Three Steps” and “Implants and
Extractions Done in the General Practitioner’s Office.”
The Air Techniques Corporate

Among the many examples of
such giving at CDA Presents are
the Berkeley Free Clinic in booth

Partying with Planmeca and the PlanMill 30 S
By Kristine Colker, today Staff
n To celebrate the launch of its newest mill, the Planmeca PlanMill® 30 S,
for chairside milling, Planmeca USA
threw a mini party in its booth, No.
1476, on Friday afternoon.
Attendees who stopped by the
“Chill with the Mill” event could pick
up an ice cream — drumsticks, ice
cream cookie sandwiches and fruit
bars were all on the menu — and sit
down for a hands-on demonstration
with a Planmeca rep.
According to Planmeca, the new
PlanMill 30 S has been designed for
optimal precision by combining highperformance servo motor technology
and durable milling components.
Capable of reaching maximum speeds
of 100,000 rpm, the four-axis highspeed spindle is ideal for single-visit
restorations and everyday milling of
inlays, onlays, crowns or bridges.
Direct drive linear force motors
used in the manufacturing of aerospace components are unique to Planmeca milling units, resulting in an
accurate and robust platform capable

Singular focus sets burs as market leaders
By Robert Selleck, today Staff
n Paul Tucker, five months into his
new position as the CEO of Microcopy,
is focused on increasing the company’s global presence by emphasizing
what Microcopy has been doing best
for 29 years: developing thoughtful,
efficient and affordable products for
single-patient-use dentistry.
“We’re constantly innovating
single-patient-use products,” Tucker
said Friday from the CDA Presents
exhibit-hall floor. Microcopy has two
booths at CDA Presents, Nos. 1328 and
731. Tucker, who brings 15 years of
executive-level dental-industry experience to the job, was named CEO
in October. His primary leadership
focus: “I want the company to be better known on a global level, to become
truly international.”
To get there, Tucker plans to focus
on what has made the 48-year-old
company the market leader in burs
ever since it pioneered the concept
of single-patient-use burs almost 30
years ago: “Microcopy is constantly
innovating new ways to effectively

and efficiently fill the need that
dentists have for smart, educated
products. … When you’re looking
for high-quality products that will
economically meet your needs, why
wouldn’t you go with the market
leader?” Tucker asks.
The question is largely rhetorical,
when coming from the company that
commands about 50 percent share
of the market. To help explain the
success, Tucker equates the use of a
bur to a toothbrush. “You don’t want
to use somebody else’s toothbrush. So
why would you want to use somebody
else’s bur?”
The near universal answer to the
question is driving growing demand
for the company’s core products, the
NeoDiamond and the NeoBurr, both of

which are available at show-special
prices at CDA Presents.
“These burs provide a huge economical advantage. They’re of the
highest quality. There’s no need to
be concerned about infection control.
And there is no need to be concerned
with the consistency of cut. As we like
to say at Microcopy, ‘Fresh cut, first
time, every time,’” Tucker said.
The NeoDiamond is America’s
No. 1 selling diamond. Each is gammasterilized and individually wrapped
in a clear and white poly packet,
identified by diamond number, shape
and description. But convenience and
patient safety are just the starting points. The commanding market
share has just as much, if not more, to
do with the burs’ reputations for fast,
clean, consistent cuts.
The NeoBurr’s reputation is just
a strong, if not stronger. Literally.
The tungsten-carbide bur is up to
70 percent stronger than the competition. Its single-piece construction
and blended neck design result in a
dramatic reduction in carbide’s tendency to break.

Microcopy CEO Paul Tucker has
some great show-special offers on the
company’s market-leading burs in
booths Nos. 1328 and 731 at CDA
Presents. (Photos/Robert Selleck,

5

“When you couple the sharpness
and efficiency of the NeoDiamond
with the strength of the NeoBurr,
there’s no reason to use anything
other than Microcopy,” Tucker said.
“You get multi-use quality at a singleuse price.”

Preventing ledges and gouges
By ContacEZ Staff
n Inspired by the demand for both
speed and safety with motorized IPR,
ContacEZ has unveiled its latest product — SupraDisc, safe-edged diamond
disc. Designed for use with Invisalign®, ClearCorrect, eCligner, Six
Month Smiles® and other orthodontic
treatments, SupraDisc offers orthodontists and general dentists a fast,
safe and efficient way to successfully
perform IPR, which has often been
a worrisome, stressful procedure,
according to the company.
In the current market, diamond
discs are coated with diamond particles all the way to their edges, making
it easy to leave harmful gouges and
ledges on tooth surfaces with even the
slightest changes in angulation. This
excess enamel damage is irreversible
and the potential cause of a variety of
serious iatrogenic conditions, including hypersensitivity and the deformation of tooth anatomy, which leads
to increased bacterial accumulation.
AD

Here in Anaheim
To check out the SupraDisc and other
ContacEZ products, stop by the booth,
No. 2142.

With SupraDisc, however, these risks
can be prevented.
Made in Germany using only the
highest quality materials, the unique
design and technology of diamond
coating leaves the outside of the disc
uncoated and non-abrasive, guiding
the path of the disc along the space
between the teeth and preventing
the edge from grinding deep cuts into
the tooth.
Additionally, this design helps ease
initial entry between the teeth, helping doctors guide the disc straight
down into the interproximal space.
These benefits, in turn, significantly
reduce chair time, decrease operator
stress and improve patient safety, the
company asserts.

diameter and are available in top-,
bottom- and dual-coated.
Best of all, SupraDisc is a perfect
complement to existing ContacEZ IPR
strips and products, according to
the company, allowing doctors to
create the perfect solution for their
interproximal reduction. Doctors can
begin reduction with the Yellow IPR
Starter and Red IPR Opener from the

IPR Strip System for easier access
to tight contacts, improve safety by
using a Snap-On Disc Guard, confirm
accurate reduction with Incremental
Thickness Gauges and polish away
surface roughness with the Gray
Final Polishing Strip.

COLTENE’S self-adhesive dual-curing

DentalEZ shows off two
next-generation products
StarETorque customizable
electric system and the
first InOffice workstation
for in-office labs promise
versatility, simplicity
By DentalEZ Integrated Solutions Staff
n
DentalEZ Integrated Solutions
recently launched two new products.
The new Star ®ETorque™ advances
the electric handpiece with a onetouch system that allows the practitioner to move seamlessly between
high- and low-speed applications,
according to the company. From caries removal to root canal treatment,
StarETorque covers a range of operatory needs with a lightweight tool that
combines power, performance and
flexibility.
The other innovative product
showcased at the DentalEZ booth,
No. 416, is the InOffice™ workstation
developed for the dental practice.
This new workstation can be customized for today’s needs, with the
flexibility to add new features as the
needs of the practice change.
“We’re excited to debut these new
products at CDA Anaheim,” said Bob
Senesac, DentalEZ’s senior director
of marketing. “As high-performance
partners of the dental industry, we
are constantly striving to develop
new products that provide solutions
to everyday challenges in the delivery of oral health care. We’re focused
on simplification and efficiency,
value-based products and outstanding customer service and support.”

StarETorque electric system

The StarETorque uses a small, lightweight, brushless motor for less noise
and vibration to benefit both patient
and dentist. The motor is autoclavable, with six customizable operative
modes for both endodontic and preparatory procedures, which provide
the ultimate in flexibility, according
to the company.
“This compact, intuitive system
gives dental professionals the freedom to work seamlessly through
a variety of procedures,” said Eric
Reno, senior product line manager of
handpieces. “It’s truly customizable,

The motor control unit of the
StarETorque features a bright, easyto-read color touch screen and a compact design for a small footprint as a
standalone or detachable for modular
mounting.
“We wanted to deliver a product
that was intuitive, innovative and
individual,” said Reno.

InOffice workstation for the
dental practice

DentalEZ brings that same level of
customization to workstations, as
well, according to the company.
It all starts with the basics: A
frame, legs and a counter top. From

there, the options to customize are
endless. Add the features you need,
including overhead lighting, an air
gun, a handpiece and more. You also
have esthetic choices, such as steel

workstations that work best for them.
A key feature is front dust collection. The dust collection system
has the highest particle capture rate
compared with leading brands, based
on independent testing, according to
the company.
“We wanted to deliver a product
that would allow the dental professional the flexibility to add some
features as their needs change,” said
Kim Pinegar, senior product line manager of lab workstations. “Being able
to select the features you’ll use dayto-day makes for a more productive,
more enjoyable work environment.”

The DEXIS FS Ergo by KaVo.

For these
reasons,
FS Ergo
redefines
sensor
technology
By DEXIS Staff

AD

n Ergo is the Latin word for “therefore” or “for that reason.” That definition is very appropriate for the
DEXIS ™ FS Ergo by KaVo™.
For many reasons, FS Ergo is changing the way dentists look at sensor
technology, according to the company. For Ergo, the DEXIS team has
redefined comfort with DEXIS innovation that is built upon the awardwinning DEXIS PerfectSize™ sensor
and TrueComfort™ design. The reason
for all of the hard work and dedication
to sensor excellence is that DEXIS is
dedicated to helping dentists improve
patient comfort.
By pairing newly developed flexible sensor technology with a soft
housing, FS Ergo can “give” as X-rays
are being captured. Even the proprietary holder system is uniquely
designed to accommodate the flex of
the sensor and adapt to patients. The
sensor housing is not only comfortable; it is also highly durable and
resistant to a wide variety of disinfection chemicals, the company asserts.
This digital sensor that gently
cushions your patient’s sensitive
anatomy is a new standard in patient
comfort, according to the company.
For that reason, FS Ergo is unlike any
traditional digital sensor.
Dr. Todd Snyder of Laguna Niguel,
Calif., notes his reason for the popularity of the FS Ergo in his office.
“Being able to offer a sensor with a
soft covering and that flexes — one
that is kinder to the mouth — is a huge
benefit. It’s really a game changer,”
he said, adding, “Even for the most
difficult patients, FS Ergo eliminates
another reason to complain at the
dentist’s office!”
Visit booth No. 1334 to see this new
standard in patient comfort and choose
FS Ergo as your imaging system.

Patients discover the advantages
of a metal-free, lightweight,
comfortable option for RPDs
By Solvay Dental 360 Staff
n Solvay Dental 360 went to the
source to gain perspective on the
patient experience for its metal-free
removable partial dentures made
with Ultaire™ AKP.
™

‘Very comfortable, very
lightweight, very easy to speak
with’

For decades, Connie wore low-quality
upper and lower partial dentures with
poor occlusion, putting her remaining
teeth at risk. She was eager to try a
metal-free option, especially when
she heard it was lightweight, comfortable and biocompatible.
“The Ultaire is very comfortable,
very lightweight and very easy to
speak with. I don’t feel that it moves
as I talk or eat,” Connie said. “I feel
that it follows the contour of my
mouth more, and it’s very much more
comfortable. If someone approached
me about the Ultaire product, I would
definitely tell them that it’s a good
product and absolutely try it!”

‘Ultaire is great, it’s fantastic,
I love it’

For years, Zitta had worn metal dentures with clasps that left her mouth
scarred and sore. Then Zitta’s dentist
prescribed Ultaire AKP metal-free
removable partial dentures, and her
mouth pain became a thing of the
past.
Made from high-performance polymer and molded to the shape of the
individual patient’s mouth, Ultaire
AKP dentures lock into place with
smooth, stationary, bone-like clasps.
At the final try-in appointment,
Zitta surprised everyone by dancing
with joy about the fit and feel of her
new Ultaire AKP partial.
“Ultaire filled out my mouth better.
It transformed my whole face,” Zitta
said. “Ultaire is great. It’s fantastic.
I love it.”

The day Jaclyn’s dentist first put
the new Ultaire AKP partial denture
in her mouth, Jaclyn could feel the
difference immediately, “It actually
fit perfectly the first time ... It has
been life-changing for me,” she said.
“Eating with the new Ultaire frame,
it’s like I have my molars back. I mean,
most of the time I forget I even have it
in my mouth.”

Two years ago, Jaclyn was fitted with a

her missing back molars. But her
partial was tighter on one side than
the other, and it tended to trap food
underneath the metal. Adjustments

Planmeca USA introduces
its ULD certification program
By Planmeca USA Staff
n
In March, during the Hinman
Dental Meeting in Atlanta, Planmeca
USA introduced a unique certification program designed to encourage
dialogue between patients and their
dental practitioners on imaging radiation levels.
The Helsinki, Finland-based dental technology company, with North
American headquarters in Roselle,
Ill., manufactures and sells imaging
equipment, such as the Planmeca
ProMax® 3D family of units.
This CBCT system has a unique
ultra-low-dose (ULD) feature that
delivers a lower dose of radiation
while achieving imaging quality that
allows orthodontists to provide an
optimal diagnosis.
AD

“A Planmeca ProMax 3D system
using ULD can drastically reduce
patient radiation by up to 77 percent — without a statistical reduction
in image quality,” said Brett Hines,
president of Planmeca USA.
Hines cited a study published by
Dr. J.B. Ludlow and D. Koivisto that
demonstrates radiation doses used
in dental imaging can be reduced
without loss of diagnostic quality.
The company is not aware of any other
dental imaging manufacturer, with
an independent study, that can claim
the same.
Because of attention in the lay
press about this issue, it’s more likely
that dental patients, too, may have
questions and concerns.
To help encourage these conversations about imaging safety, Planmeca

USA developed a
complimentary
ULD certification
program exclusively for Planmeca ProMax 3D
ULD-capable systems.

ULD certification program
features:

• Planmeca ULD certified office
display materials to inform patients
that you are using advanced safety/
quality care X-ray equipment.
• Access to downloadable digital
materials for use on your website and
social media outlets to educate and
market your practice as Planmeca
ULD certified.
• Ability to become part of a

searchable database of Planmeca
ULD certified dentists, for prospective patients who seek low-radiation
imaging practices in their area.

Choose the ‘WireLess’ light that’s best for you
By Designs for Vision Staff
n Designs for Vision’s LED DayLite®
WireLess™ Mini and LED DayLite
WireLess headlights free you from
being tethered to a battery pack. The
simple modular designs uncouple the
headlights from a specific frame or
single pair of loupes.
Prior technology married a cordless light to one pair of loupes via a
cumbersome integration of the batteries and electronics into the frame.
The LED DayLite WireLess headlights
are independent of any frame/loupes.
The patent-pending design of the
LED DayLite Wireless headlights is a
new concept: a self-contained headlight that can integrate with various
platforms, including your existing
loupes, safety eyewear, lightweight
headbands and future loupes or eyewear purchases.
Best of all, the LED DayLite Wireless headlights can be easily transferred from one platform to another,
expanding your WireLess illumination possibilities across your eyewear
options.

The LED DayLite WireLess produces more than 40,000 lux at high
intensity and 27,000 lux at medium
intensity, while the intensity of the
LED DayLite WireLess Mini is 27,000
lux.

Anutra Medical partners with Podium
to enhance platinum member benefits
By Anutra Medical Staff
n Anutra Medical, a medical device
company, provides a local anesthetic
delivery system that gives healthcare providers the ability to mix and
dispense buffered anesthetic. This
ultimately helps to streamline a practice’s workflow as well as enhance
patient experience, according to the
company.
The benefits of using the Anutra
AD

To learn more about Anutra Medical,
Podium or an Anutra platinum membership, stop by the Anutra booth,
No. 1746.

Local Anesthetic Delivery System
are many, the company asserts. By
buffering local anesthetic, practitioners can offer an injection that

is fast-acting and reliable, allowing
the majority of patients to get numb
seven times faster than traditional
anesthetic. Further, buffered anesthetic provides a more comfortable
injection for patients. The average
patient, on a Likert scale from 1 to 10
where 1 is “totally painless” and 10 is
“very painful,” rates a buffered local
anesthetic injection from the Anutra
Local Anesthetic Delivery System a
1.81, averaging “painless.”

A major benefit of implementing
buffered anesthetic into a health-care
practice, particularly in the dental
office, is the time savings. The average dental office reported between
15 and 20 minutes saved per appointment where buffered local anesthetic
was used.
Anutra Medical has redefined how
practitioners can receive their supply
of local anesthetic by offering a platinum membership. This membership
gives the dentist the option to receive
everything they need to buffer and
administer anesthetic in one simple
membership package.
Traditionally, practitioners would
have to piece together different components for giving injections, including but not limited to topical, syringes,
needles and the anesthetic. Via the
platinum membership, Anutra Medical provides this to the practitioner
in one simple step. Further, Anutra
provides other offers to its platinum
membership, including working with
Podium.
This week, Anutra announced its
partnership with Podium, a leading
customer communication platform
for local businesses. Through its messenger and review products, practitioners are able to streamline their
online review invitations.
Patients who have had an appointment are sent an invitation to review
their experience via text within minutes, when reviews are most accurate
and likely to be acted upon. This partnership will save dentists time as well
as increasing the number and quality
of their online reviews on Google,
Facebook and other key sites.
By working together, Anutra is
subsidizing the cost of a Podium subscription exclusively to its platinum
members.
“We are constantly looking for
innovative ways to help practices
grow their patient base and spread
the word that patients no longer
should fear an injection,” Ryan Vet,
VP marketing at Anutra Medical,
said. “Further, with the efficiencies
that come along with utilizing buffered anesthetic in a practice, it only
makes sense that we, Anutra, help our
platinum members continue to grow
their patient base to help their practice become even more profitable.”
Platinum members of Anutra are
immediately eligible for the Podium
offering and can contact Anutra for
more information. Anutra will be
subsidizing up to $1,650 off the first
year’s subscription of Podium to eligible platinum members.
