Where dentistry is going

n It’s always important to look to the
future to see what is coming as well
as to understand how you can be a
part of ensuring that you’re helping
to make it a good one, and with the
ADSO’s “Boldly Evolving Dentistry:
A Members-Only Virtual Event,” one
opportunity to do just that is right
here.
This two-day meeting, taking place
Wednesday, March 24, and Thursday,
March 25, is open to all Association of
Dental Support Organizations members in good standing, employees from
all DSO member companies and industry partners. Registration is free.
The event will feature keynotes
from top dentistry leaders in the country, tailored breakout programming
and unique networking opportunities to provide an inclusive learning

Don’t miss the keynote address with Barbara Corcoran

If the name Barbara Corcoran

ADSO applauds HHS for authorizing
dentists to administer COVID-19 vaccines

n The Association of Dental Support Organizations (ADSO) applauds
the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services’ (HHS) decision to
expand the group of qualified professionals able to administer the COVID19 vaccine to include dentists.
Dentists are exceptionally qualified to administer vaccines, and this
decision will expand the vaccine distribution and reach even more people
across the country, especially those
living in health professional shortage
areas.
“Dentists are more than qualified,
and clinics are sufficiently suited to
administer COVID-19 vaccines to the
public,” said Andrew Smith, executive director of the ADSO. “People
should not be hesitant to receive a
vaccine from a dentist, whether at
a vaccine clinic or dentist’s office.

Comprising more than 60 DSO
member companies, several association partners and more than 180
industry partners, the ADSO represents dental support organizations
(DSOs) before the public, policymakers and the media.
Its members operate in 44 states
and provide the highest level of nonclinical support to more than 10,000
dentists across the country as well as
in Australia, Canada, New Zealand
and the United Kingdom.

tracks. Wednesday’s breakout sessions will focus on compliance, future
trends, human resources, leadership
and operations while Thursday will
feature advocacy, clinical, growth
and development, information technology and marketing.
Topics of the two days include consolidation of the dental force, working
remotely, infection control, innovations in integrated health care delivery models, credentialing, recruiting
and cybersecurity, among others.

Mainstage sessions

In addition to the breakout sessions,
there will be five mainstage sessions
that will serve as highlights of the
meeting.
• “The Business of Diversity.” Taking place at 1:10 p.m. (EST) Wednesday, this session will explore how
DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion)
is a critical element to driving health
equity for future generations. As
the dental workforce becomes more
diverse, it is critical to understand
the journey our future professionals have taken to be where they are
today.
• “AI in Dentistry: How to Utilize it to

efficiency, run practices more profitably and make better data-driven

of the full range of potential applications of AI and equip them with the
knowledge of how best to deploy AI to
best serve their business needs.
• “Inclusive Leadership: A Fireside
Chat with Barbara Corcoran.” Taking
place at 1:05 p.m. (EST) Thursday, this
session will discuss what it means to
be a leader in times of crisis. Participants will walk away with examples
and ideas they can implement in their
own lives and practices.
• “In the Eye of the Beholder with
Senator Bill Frist.” Taking place at

2:20 p.m. (EST) Thursday, this session
will feature former Senator Bill Frist
of Tennessee discussing the importance of and value created by defining
and quantifying the subjective view
of quality that exists in dentistry
today.
• “Moving Forward as One Dental
Industry: A Conversation with Association Leaders.” Closing out the meeting
at 4:15 p.m. (EST) Thursday, this final
session will feature the leaders of the
American Dental Association, Georgia Dental Association and the American Association of Dental Boards
joining ADSO President Emmet Scott
to discuss how they are aligning to
cement dentistry as an essential part
of the health care industry.

Andrew Smith announced as
executive director of the Association
of Dental Support Organizations

n The Association of Dental Support
Organizations (ADSO) is excited to
announce that the ADSO Board of
Directors has selected Andrew Smith

as the new executive director of the
organization.
In his new role, Smith will represent the DSO industry to policymakers and other key stakeholders to
ensure that DSO-affiliated dentists

can operate in a practice environment
that allows them to receive the support they need.

on the clinical side of dentistry. I look
forward to working alongside my
fellow dental associations to shape
the current and future discussions,
and supporting the dental industry
as it grows its vision strategically,”
Smith said.  
“I am thrilled to have Andrew join
the ADSO team,” said Emmet Scott,
president of the ADSO. “Andrew’s
expertise will support the ADSO
in advancing key relationships and
navigating critical policy decisions.
His advocacy insights will help meet
the needs of both emerging and established DSOs.”
Smith served as executive vice
president of government relations
and external affairs for Parallel (formerly Surterra Wellness), where he
managed the state and federal government relations teams, served as
the company’s chief advocate and
spokesperson to policymakers and
regulators, and led the company’s
advocacy and communications goals
in the public affairs space.
Prior to joining the private sector,
Smith spent a decade working in
government, campaigns and public
policy. In particular, he worked as
finance director and senior advisor
for Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe,
for whom he oversaw the strategy,
development and implementation of
a record-breaking $44 million fundraising operation.
Smith is originally from Chicago
and is a graduate of Georgetown University with a degree in government
and history. He lives in Greenwich,
Conn., with his wife, Laura, and their
two children, Holden and Caroline.
