AGD fun for
the family

n If you’ve chosen to make a family
trip out of AGD2018, rest assured your
family will have plenty of activities to
choose from while you’re engaged in
educational sessions. Both children
and significant others will be able to
participate in the fun sessions that
make up the Family Track. These
activities include cooking classes,
yoga and self-defense lessons.
n Dennis Tarnow, DDS, will present
the AGD2018 keynote address,
“Dentistry: Where We Were, Where
We Are and Where We Are Going …
How Exciting!”
Tarnow is a clinical professor
of periodontology and director
of implant education at Columbia
School of Dental Medicine, New York.
His speech, taking place from 8 to
9 a.m. today, will examine how new
technologies and procedures have
completely modified dentistry while
some practices have remained
tried and true. Tarnow will explore
enduring procedures as well as
how new ideas, such as implants,
periodontal plastic surgery and stem
cell research, have changed what
dentists and patients expect.
This afternoon, join AGD President
Manuel Cordero, DDS, CPH, MAGD, as
he invites attendees to kick off their
first official evening at AGD2018 in
the exhibit hall. Enjoy small-plate
dining, cocktails (complimentary
with drink tickets), New Orleans-style
entertainment and a sneak preview
of what’s to come at AGD2019 at the
Mohegan Sun Casino and Resort in
Connecticut.

With the official hotel only a
mile away from the French Quarter,
AGD2018 attendees will have
no shortage of options to fill their
downtime during their stay in New
Orleans.
Attractions
• French Quarter: A 20-minute walk
from the Hyatt Regency New Orleans,
the most famous neighborhood in the
city is a natural choice for dentists
who want to do some sightseeing
after a day of educational sessions.
While Bourbon Street is known as
an evening destination, Royal Street,
with its art galleries and upscale
shops, is an ideal daytime stop.
• National WWII Museum: History
buffs planning to attend AGD2018
might want to consider staying an
extra day to experience the entirety of
the National WWII Museum. Located
less than a mile from the Hyatt,
the museum has been ranked the
No. 1 attraction in the city and the
No. 4 museum in the country by
TripAdvisor.
Restaurants
New Orleans is famous for its Creole food, not Cajun food, a common
misnomer. Creole cuisine includes
French, Spanish and African influences. In NOLA, visitors will find
a culinary mecca as they wander
around the city — provided they
prefer their food spicy, fried and from
the sea.
• Trenasse (444 St. Charles Ave.,
Suite 100). A chef-driven restaurant
that pays homage to the city’s Creole
roots, Trenasse features dishes such
as alligator hot tamales, Louisiana
crawfish pie and pan-fried redfish
meuniére.

The school is housed in an 1800s
renovated molasses warehouse.
Expert chefs will guide attendees
through fundamental New Orleans
dishes, including gumbo, jambalaya

an “homage to the grand old FrancoGerman brasseries that once reigned
in New Orleans.” The restaurant’s
menu — with dishes from pâté of
Louisiana rabbit and chicken livers to

Years of Catholicism in New Orleans
(June 1-30): The Old Ursuline Convent
Museum is hosting an exhibit that
examines the history of the St. Louis
Cathedral that features photographs,
portraits, letters and artifacts.
• New Orleans Pride (June 8–10):
The festival will feature a series of
events that celebrate the LGBT+ community of New Orleans. Events include
a kick-off party, family day, parade,
parade after-party and brunch.

Help fight oral cancer at AGD2018
Bidding for the AGD Foundation’s Silent Auction goes through Saturday

At this year’s conference, the
AGD Foundation continues its work
to fight oral cancer by offering free
oral cancer screenings and hosting
an electronic silent auction and a
baseball cap fundraiser to support
future screening and grants for oral
cancer initiatives, such as education,
research and community-based
programs.
Screenings will take place from
9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at First Grace
United Methodist Church, 3401 Canal
St., located 2.3 miles from the Hyatt
Regency New Orleans.
Additionally, the AGD Foundation’s
2018 Electronic Silent Auction
Fundraiser opened for bidding May
31. Don’t miss this opportunity to
purchase C.E. courses, dental
instruments, artwork, electronics
and more.
Proceeds benefit the AGD
Foundation Grant Program, which
offers support to AGD constituents
and nonprofit organizations that raise

In March, during the Hinman
Dental Meeting in Atlanta, Planmeca
USA introduced a unique certification
program designed to encourage
dialogue between patients and their
dental practitioners on imaging
radiation levels.
The Helsinki, Finland-based dental
technology company, with North
American headquarters in Roselle,
Ill., manufactures and sells imaging
equipment, such as the Planmeca
ProMax® 3D family of units.
This CBCT system has a unique
ultra-low-dose (ULD) feature that
delivers a lower dose of radiation
while achieving imaging quality that
allows orthodontists to provide an
optimal diagnosis.

drastically reduce patient
radiation by up to 77 percent
— without a statistical
reduction in image quality,”
said Brett Hines, president of
Planmeca USA.
Hines cited a study published by
Dr. J.B. Ludlow and D. Koivisto that
demonstrates radiation doses used
in dental imaging can be reduced
without loss of diagnostic quality.
The company is not aware of any other
dental imaging manufacturer, with
an independent study, that can claim
the same.

Glidewell Dental to present its second
educational symposium near Washington, D.C.

Glidewell Dental has announced
its second Glidewell Dental Symposium. Scheduled for Oct. 19 and
20, at the Gaylord National Resort
& Convention Center in National
Harbor, Md., near Washington, D.C.,
this event will include more than a
dozen educators providing two days
of intensive instruction, with a first
day of fast-paced presentations and
a second day of in-depth clinical and
business training.
“Dentists have more options for
treating patients today than ever
before,” said Dr. Neil Park, scientific
chair of the Glidewell Symposium
and vice president of clinical affairs
at Glidewell Dental. “This period of
rapid innovation in dental technology
presents many opportunities for
clinicians to expand their knowledge

for elevating the standard of care

The symposium brings together
notable experts from many different
backgrounds
and
specialties,
including esthetic dentistry, digital
dentistry, dental implants, tissue
regeneration, sleep-related dentistry,

event kicks off Friday, Oct. 19, with
a presentation on the current and
future state of dentistry from Jim
Glidewell, CDT, president and CEO of
Glidewell Dental, followed by a lineup
of informative presentations and a
special keynote address delivered by
Dr. Jack Hahn, a legendary pioneer in
dental implantology.
On Saturday, Oct. 20, in-depth,
hands-on workshops will be led
by some of the most distinguished
leaders in clinical dentistry,
representing faculties such as the
Misch International Implant Institute,
the International Congress of Oral
Implantologists and the American
Academy of Implant Dentistry. The
workshops will provide practical
clinical information on the latest
innovations, protocols, products and
procedures in the field.

year’s sold-out symposium, we

from attendees who expressed their
desire for refining their clinical skills
and adopting the latest technology to
grow their practice,” said Park. “They
inspired us to expand the event to
two days, to cover even more clinical
and business topics, with nearly a
dozen hands-on Saturday workshops
to choose from. And we’ve moved to a
more spacious venue to accommodate
a vast array of interactive exhibits
and technology demonstrations.”
During both days of the event,
the exhibition floor will be packed
with displays of 3-D printing,
intraoral scanning, in-office milling,
the CAD/CAM workflow, dental
implants and regenerative and
restorative materials, as well as live
demonstrations and a virtual reality
tour of Glidewell Dental’s expansive
R&D campus, technology center and
laboratory.
The 2018 Glidewell Dental
Symposium is designed for dentists,
hygienists and chairside and frontoffice auxiliaries, and attendees
enrolled for both days will earn up
to 12 hours of C.E. credits. Tuition for
day 1 is $195 and day 2 is $150, with
special early bird pricing of $125 and
$95, respectively, when registering
by July 31.
On Friday, tuition includes a
complimentary breakfast, lunch and
cocktail reception with hosted bar;
Saturday tuition includes breakfast.
