The balance between
innovation and tradition
The Straumann Group offers
the latest digital technologies and training.
A recent surge of innovations has
sparked a transformative wave in the
field of dentistry, reshaping the landscape of oral healthcare. In this interview, Dr Christoph Reinschmidt, the
Straumann Group’s head of distributor
markets in the Europe, Middle East and
Africa region, and Albin Gygli, head of
digital for central and eastern Europe,
the Middle East and Africa, talk about the
multi-brand dental company’s approach
to and philosophy regarding introducing
new digital solutions and identify future
trends in dentistry, as well as how the
company is strategically positioned to
adapt to changes.
While innovation is crucial, practitioners
often rely on established techniques.
How does the Straumann Group harmonise introducing innovative features
with ensuring compatibility for practitioners accustomed to conventional
methods?
Dr Reinschmidt: At the Straumann
Group, we are committed to being the
most customer-focused and innovative
oral care company. Consequently, we
deeply recognise that innovation has to
be aligned with tradition and clinical
evidence. We pursue a combination of
in-house innovations as well as strategic
acquisitions as a way forward. On the one
hand, products like Straumann’s iEXCEL,
which will be presented during the
ITI World Symposium in Singapore from
9 to 11 May, showcase our internal
research and development capabilities.
On the other hand, acquisitions of brands
like GalvoSurge demonstrate our openness
to integrating external expertise into our
portfolio. It is also worth mentioning that
innovation is not confined to a single
brand within the Straumann Group. We
ensure that all our brands incorporate
cutting-edge technologies, maintaining a
high standard of excellence across our
entire product portfolio. This inclusive
approach ensures that practitioners

“Dentistry without deviation”
An interview with Dr Amir Mansouri, CEO of SprintRay.
SprintRay has long held the
unique position of being an additive manufacturing business with
a single focus: dentistry. Ahead of
AEEDC 2024, Dental Tribune International spoke with SprintRay CEO
Dr Amir Mansouri about the company’s upcoming foray into the
Middle Eastern market, SprintRay’s
continued success and the value
of converting an analogue practice
into a streamlined, digital enterprise.
Dr Mansouri, SprintRay has been incredibly productive throughout the
past year. With AEEDC Dubai 2024
on the horizon, which innovation do
you expect will draw visitors most
to the SprintRay booth?
Research and development and
advancing innovations are our core
focus. We never take our market
position for granted and are always
working to disrupt our own product
lines and position by introducing
new innovations. Our emphasis is
heavily on materials and AI—materials
to broaden the current applica-

On the topic of choices, even in 2024, there are
dental practitioners who are still hesitant to
switch to an additive manufacturing process.
What are the long-term benefits of giving up
traditional methods and switching to a digital
workflow?
Every day that clinicians delay adopting
this technology, they fall behind in their professional development and competitiveness. 3D
printing offers more control and versatility in
treatment options, providing a competitive
edge in their market. Offering a same-day
crown or night guard increases the likelihood
of patient acceptance.
What decisions have kept SprintRay so successful across the European market and indeed worldwide?
Our focus on dentistry without deviation
has been key. Unlike our competitors who treat
dentistry as a secondary market or 3D printing
as a sideline, we are dedicated solely to dentistry. This focus has driven us to make decisions aligned with community needs. We’ve developed game-changing materials, software, AI
and more, making 3D printing more accessible,
affordable and exciting for clinicians and dental labs.

An interview with Dr Ahmed Shawky el-Sheshtawy, AEEDC Dubai 2024 speaker.

critical process in our treatments. My lecture will also cover different procedures

retreatment cases.

Dr Ahmed Shawky el-Sheshtawy.
n The possibilities and risks of endodontic retreatments in the pursuit of
saving natural teeth will be presented
at AEEDC Dubai 2024 by endodontist
Dr Ahmed Shawky el-Sheshtawy. He
owns a private practice specialising in
micro-endodontics and is a senior lecturer at the Department of Endodontics
of Cairo University in Egypt. Dental
Tribune International spoke with him
about his upcoming lecture, the complexity of retreatments, advances in the
field of endodontics and how to best
manage patient expectations.
Your lecture title refers to retreatment
as a unique way of saving teeth. What
will the main focus of your lecture at
AEEDC be, and what do you hope participants will take away from it?
My lecture will shed light on the role
of endodontic retreatments in preserving
natural teeth as an alternative to replacing them with implants or prosthetic
appliances. Attendees will be taken on a
Could you explain how the objectives
of retreatments, like the healing of
periapical periodontitis and its prevention, are more complex compared with
primary treatments?
The treatment and prevention of
recurrent periapical periodontitis in
failed treatments are notably more complex than in primary treatments. In primary treatments, the root canal system,
despite its intricacies, can be effectively
managed with current shaping and
cleaning protocols, achieving success
rates as high as 95% in most instances.
However, in cases where treatment failures necessitate retreatments, additional
factors or challenges may complicate the
situation. These include the removal of
previous root filling materials, altered
anatomy, the presence of perforations,
canal blockage (iatrogenic or biological),
inflammatory resorption and the inability to achieve patency across the
foramen, which is crucial. Furthermore,
the presence of an apical lesion adds to
these complications. These complications,
combined with the inherently complex
nature of the root canal system, make
retreatments significantly more challenging than primary treatments, often resulting in lower success rates.
What are the key challenges clinicians
face in gaining access to the root canal
system during retreatments, especially considering factors like existing
intra-canal fillings and altered canal
anatomy?
in various procedures, ranging from
disassembly to cleaning, and even in
correcting previous mishaps.

Figs.1a–c: (a) Mandibular left second molar presented with unsuccessful primary treatment and
symptomatic periapical periodontitis. (b) Non-surgical treatment involved an apical plug in the
distal root. (c) One-year follow-up showed complete healing of the periradicular lesion.
Regaining access to the root canal
system can be challenging, especially
when fibre posts have been used as
intra-canal retention elements. Clinicians need the requisite experience and
appropriate tools to avoid iatrogenic errors. Regarding intra-canal filling materials, a different yet dynamic approach
is required. This is because there are
various types of root filling materials,
including the older silver points, the
widely used gutta-percha and calcium
silicate materials, each requiring a distinct method of removal to regain full
access to the root canal system. Inadequate removal of these materials
during retreatments can compromise
the treatment outcome. Remnants may
limit the accessibility of disinfectants
and instruments to micro-anatomies or
may result in an inadequate seal.
Given the additional challenges, what
are the key factors to consider when
developing a strategy for a successful
retreatment outcome?
Key factors for developing an
effective retreatment strategy include
a thorough pretreatment evaluation by
the clinician. This evaluation is crucial
for determining the case prognosis and
formulating the treatment plan. The
next step involves decision-making, where
the clinician decides on the retreatment
approach—whether non-surgical, surgical or a combination of both. In this
context, the clinician also has to decide
whether the tooth presented can be
saved. The third factor encompasses
the technicalities and procedural steps
involved in the retreatment process.
What advancements in endodontic technology or techniques have improved
the outcomes of retreatment procedures in recent years?
Endodontics is a very dynamic and
rapidly evolving specialty. It has benefited from advancements in imaging
modalities, such as CBCT, which enables a precise visualisation of dental
issues. Recent advances in nickel–
titanium instruments and their kinematics, along with the introduction of
new irrigant delivery and activation
instruments and devices, have contributed
to improved treatment outcomes.
The integration of magnification
and ultrasound in endodontic practice
is a critical aspect that has significantly
transformed the specialty—I consider
these to be game-changers. These
technologies have been instrumental
In addition, I would like to highlight
the rapidly evolving advancements
in endodontic biomaterials, particularly
calcium silicate materials. These have
proved helpful in complex retreatments,
especially in cases involving root defects
or challenging anatomies. Additionally,
there have been significant advancements in concepts and materials for the
post-endodontic restorative phase, and
these play a crucial role in extending the
survival time of retreated teeth.
How do you manage patient expectations
and communicate the potential risks
and benefits of undergoing a retreatment
procedure?
That’s a very good question, especially for young clinicians. The key factor in managing patient expectations
lies in proper pretreatment evaluation.
This involves examining the current
status of the tooth, assessing potential
complications and, most importantly,
evaluating the survival potential of the
tooth after treatment. Equipped with
this information, clinicians can clearly
and easily communicate the benefits
and risks involved to patients.
Is there anything else you would like
our readers to know?
I would like to emphasise that
retreatments are a unique way to save
not only teeth but also the surrounding
bone. By achieving the goal of healing,
even if the tooth structurally fails at some
point, a healthy foundation for a future
implant has been established. 7
Editorial note: Dr Ahmed Shawky el-Sheshtawy
will be holding his lecture, titled “Retreatments:
A unique way to save teeth”, on 6 February from
9:00 to 10:00 GST.

VR and AI prove useful aids in treating patients with mental disabilities
Study highlights impact of virtual reality and artificial intelligence on dental care.
The study begins by highlighting the high prevalence of mental
disorders globally and the specific
challenges faced by individuals
with mental disabilities in accessing
dental care. The technological advancements in mental health treatment, especially through AI and VR,
are underscored as potential solutions for managing anxiety and
improving behaviour in dental settings. The authors sought to determine
whether immersive VR experiences
combined with AI interventions
could reduce anxiety and improve
behaviour in individuals with moderate to severe mental disabilities,
such as cerebral palsy and Down’s
syndrome. It hypothesised that
VR simulations would familiarise
individuals with the dental environ-

Every dental clinician in the
world will, at some point, treat a
patient with a form of mental disability, and according to recent research, technology is now available
to make that treatment go more
smoothly and to help the patient
feel more comfortable. This study,
significant in the context of Saudi
Arabia where over a million individuals suffer from mental disabilities, aimed to address these
patients’ inability to express dental
treatment needs. The researchers
explored the impact of virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence
(AI) interventions during dental
treatments on anxiety and behavioural responses in patients with
mental disabilities.
ment, thereby making minor procedures easier for dental staff and
patients.
The cross-sectional study was
conducted between December 2022
and March 2023 among 90 Saudi
female residents in a rehabilitation
centre. Participants were selected
based on specific inclusion and
exclusion criteria, and data was
collected on their demographic
background, baseline anxiety levels, and behaviours. Two forms of
intervention were employed in the
care of these patients. The first utilised an Oculus Quest 2 VR headset
to create a simulated natural environment to provide a soothing experience. The second intervention
involved an AI-powered environment
linked to a galvanic skin response
(GSR) sensor, which adjusted the
environment based on the patient’s
anxiety levels by measuring emotional arousal.
The simulated environment created utilised the relaxing properties
of nature such as imagery of a river
and wetlands. Additionally, cartoon
characters were included, and the
environment was part of a customised design. The GSR monitored
whether the patient reached an
established threshold and adjusted
the VR environment to compensate
and provide a more soothing experience.
Each anxiety score was tailored
to the patient, and the authors did
not assign a baseline score. These
individual scores were useful for
evaluating before and after status
for each patient as well as the efficacy
of the programme during each phase
of the treatment—pre-intervention,
intervention and post-intervention.
By additionally using the Frankl
Behavior Rating Scale and the
Venham Anxiety and Behavior
Scale to assess behavioural changes,
the clinicians were able to note a
significant decrease in anxiety levels and improvement in behaviour
when VR and AI interventions were
employed. For example, GSR scores
reduced significantly from pretreatment to post-treatment. Additionally, there was a notable improvement in behaviour shown in the
Frankl and Venham scores, and the
study found a positive correlation
between reduced anxiety and improved behaviour.
According to these results, it
seems that VR-based distraction is
an effective method for managing
anxiety and behaviour during
non-invasive dental treatments in
individuals with mental disabilities.
It suggests that VR and AI interventions have broader applicability in
various clinical settings and calls
for further research to explore their
effectiveness in more complex
medical and dental procedures.
The study, titled “Effect of virtual
reality and artificial intelligence on
anxiety and behaviour among individuals with mental disabilities in
a dental setting”, was published on
27 October 2023 in the Journal of
Disability Research.
Wanted: Research on 3D-printed zirconia restorations
Researchers conduct analysis of 3D-printed vs. milled zirconia prostheses.
Zirconia, dubbed “ceramic steel”
for its robustness, is a preferred choice
for various dental restorations owing
to its high strength and biocompatibility, among other attributes. The introduction of CAD/CAM technologies has
enhanced the precision of manufacture of zirconia restorations by minimising human error. There are two
main fabrication methods: subtractive
(milling) and additive (3D printing).
Each technique has its advantages.
Milling is cost-effective and less sen-
10
Clinically, zirconia crowns and
FDPs showed impressive biological
and physical properties, with few
reported issues. The meta-analysis
revealed that, regardless of variables like age, glazing/staining, location and marginal integrity, the
pooled survival rate of these crowns
and FDPs was consistently high, at
100%. In the context of in vitro
studies comparing 3D-printed and
milled zirconia crowns and FDPs,
findings suggested that both methods offered comparable accuracy,
adaptability and strength, positioning
3D printing as a viable option for
clinical use.

Zirconia-based restorations, renowned for their durability and aesthetics resembling natural teeth, have
gained popularity over the past
20 years and are increasingly being
produced using CAD/CAM. A recent
systematic review and meta-analysis
comparing milled versus 3D-printed
zirconia prostheses has found continual
gaps in the research, including biases,
and potential under–representation
of the performance capabilities of
3D-printed restorations. A complete
lack of clinical studies on the efficacy
of 3D–printed zirconia crowns and
fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) also highlights how far research into zirconia
crown fabrication has yet to go.
sitive to minor design imperfections,
while printing offers more design flexibility and efficiency in intricate structures. While 3D printing of dental restorations is nascent, studies comparing the effectiveness of milled versus
printed zirconia are scarce.
The present review was conducted
in an effort to bridge this knowledge
gap by seeking to determine whether

tionally produced ones. The review included various in vitro studies, necessary in lieu of any available clinical studies on 3D-printed zirconia restorations,
and the results are intended to guide clinicians in selecting the best method for
creating crowns and FDPs. The included
articles were published from 2004 to
November 2022 and reported on the
placement of over 1,500 zirconia restorations, predominantly in the posterior
regions. The studies involved a variety of
clinical designs, and most patients were
followed for over a year.
The main biological outcome
observed across the board was bleeding on probing. Technical issues,
such as crown fractures, were noted,
one study recording a survival rate
of 91.5%. Proper polishing was
found to reduce the chance of crown
fracture. Other key findings in the
review were that patients with bruxism should be treated with zirconia
crowns and FDPs with great caution
and adjustments might be needed
after crown placement owing to occlusal issues or pain. The average
preservation of marginal integrity
was high, but varied depending on
the study. Zirconia was found to
cause wear on opposing teeth, but
less so than other ceramics.
There is limited literature on
zirconia’s aesthetic aspects, especially
concerning colour. The review faced
challenges like technique variability
and limited patient sample size. Conclusively, zirconia crowns and FDPs,
whether 3D-printed or milled, are
promising but require more extensive research, especially long-term
studies, to validate their benefits over
traditionally produced prostheses.
Although in some cases the literature
suggests that milled crowns and
FDPs are superior to 3D-printed ones,
there were no identified direct comparisons performed in any studies.
The lack of research into 3D-printed
crowns and FDPs may have contributed
to this result.
The study, titled “Clinical effectiveness of 3D-milled and 3D-printed
zirconia prosthesis—a systematic
review and meta-analysis”, was
published on 27 August 2023 in
Biomimetics.

Middle Eastern dental market to swell to more than US$1.6 billion
By Donna Santos & Dr Kamran Zamanian, iData Research
in oral health, may have a negative
impact on market growth.
Although the dental industry in the
Middle East plunged in value by more
than 30% in 2020 owing to the COVID-19
pandemic, by 2023 it had rebounded
so significantly that predictions hold
the market to be worth upwards of
US$1.6 billion by 2029.1–5 The industry
includes a variety of market segments,
such as dental prostheses, digital dentistry, dental bone graft substitutes
and other biomaterials, dental implants
and dental operatory equipment, and
continuous developments have turned
what was a sinking market into something robust, promising valuable gains
for the region, which includes Bahrain,
Iran, Israel, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar,
Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
Dental prostheses market
The dental prostheses market,
encompassing crowns and bridges,
inlays, onlays and complete dentures,
is the largest segment. It is expected
that the demand for dental prostheses
will continue to grow, thanks to an
expanding regional population, which
has increased by more than 35% since
2005.6 It is the aged among the population which has significantly bolstered
this market’s growth. According to
data published by the World Bank, it
can be estimated that the UAE’s ageing
population has been growing at an
average annual growth rate of 19%,
followed by Kuwait at 12%.7 Moreover,
this demand is fuelled by the growing
number of migrant workers, as Arab
states are considered a top destination
Digital dentistry market
The Middle East has consistently
embraced and integrated digitisation
into its dental workflows through the
utilisation of CAD/CAM technologies
and dental 3D printers. The increasing
prevalence of dental clinics has contributed to a rise in unit sales in recent
years. Moreover, the number of dentists
is continually growing across each
country in the region. For instance,
in the UAE, the number of dentists
increased fivefold from 2010 to 2018,
1,203 compared with 6,273.10, 11

for economic opportunity. A Pew Research
Center article reported that 93.9% of
residents in the UAE, 80.6% of residents in Qatar and 71.3% of residents
in Kuwait in 2020 were international
migrants.8 Overall, the dental prostheses market is expected to reach over
US$900 million in 2029, the majority
being accounted for by crowns and
bridges.2
Dental implant market
In line with the growth of the
dental prostheses market, the dental
implant market is poised to reach
US$187 million.5 Improved access to
dental healthcare is expected to continue boosting market demand in the
short term, allowing patients suffering
from edentulism to receive implants
with ease and reliability. Based on
estimates of per capita expenditure
on dental healthcare, Israel has the
highest per capita expenditure compared
with other countries in the Middle East,
followed by Qatar.
According to the Global Burden
of Disease study, Qatar has the highest score in caries in the permanent
dentition among individuals aged
20 years and above, while Israel has
the highest score in periodontal disease
in the same age group.9 Efforts and
initiatives for dental health awareness

Furthermore, the growing popularity of clear aligners has contributed
to an increase in unit sales of intra-oral
scanners. With the expansion of the
Straumann Group, Align Technology,
Dentsply Sirona and other significant
competitors in the dental industry in
the Middle East, it is expected that
the growth will continue to increase
annually.12–14
A substantial portion of the digital
dentistry market is accounted for
by CAD/CAM materials, followed by
CAD/CAM devices. The dental 3D
printer market is identified as the most
rapidly growing segment. The CAD/CAM
device market is the most concentrated
owing to increased competition across all
segments. The milling system market,
in particular, is saturated with competitors,

leading to price reduction. Both the
intra-oral scanner and laboratory scanner markets are experiencing pricing
pressure as low-cost manufacturers
gain traction. In the chairside CAD/CAM
system market, new competitors, including dental distributors offering
open CAD/CAM system services, are
emerging, resulting in an overall decline in pricing across all segments of
the global CAD/CAM device market.
Consequently, the digital dentistry
market in the Middle East is expected to
reach a market value of US$69.4 million

substitute and dental membrane products
are commonly used in dental implant
procedures. One of the major drivers
of this market in the Middle East is the
ageing population, and the market is
further fuelled by improved access to
and the quality of dental care.
However, similar to the dental
implant market, this is expected to provide a short-term boost. In the longer
term, as oral health improves, the
demand for restorative therapies could
begin to decrease. The longer-term impacts of these developments remain to
be seen, but for the foreseeable future,
the market is expected to experience
stable growth. Overall, the dental bone
graft substitute and other biomaterials
market in the Middle East was
valued at US$24 million in 2020
and is expected to reach more than
US$32 million by 2029.3
Dental operatory
equipment market
The dental operatory equipment
market includes dental chair units,
dental cabinetry, dental handpieces,
curing lights, ultrasonic scalers, intraoral cameras, caries detection devices,
dental autoclaves, dental vacuum systems, dental air compressors, practice
management software, dental microscopes and dental lasers. Unit sales
of these items will be driven by the
growing number of dental clinics, as
the presence of both local and migrant
However, this market growth
will be hampered by the generational
displacement of dentists. Senior practitioners are often less inclined to
adopt new technology, as it requires
learning to use unfamiliar tools instead of the more familiar ones with
which they have gained extensive
experience. Because the average age
of retirement among dentists is continuing to increase, a growing number of
older dentists are expected to remain
active in the field over the forecast
period. This persistence of senior
practitioners is likely to contribute
to the sustained usage and sales of
older technology in the dental industry.
As dental clinics continue to expand
owing to the growing number of dentists, it is expected that this market
will grow and possibly reach a market
value of US$457 million in 2029.4
Conclusion
Among the dental markets in the
Middle East, the largest market is the
dental prostheses market, followed by the
dental operatory equipment market.
Overall, the growing ageing population,
which includes migrant residents in
the Middle East, is having a significant
impact on all the markets mentioned
in this report, resulting in a positive
trend, which is being propelled by
the increasing number of dentists
and improved dental healthcare access. Technological innovation and
the continued embrace of digitisation will also fuel the growth of these
markets.
However, these advancements
are being tempered by the ongoing
improvements in dental hygiene. The
generational displacement of dentists
too is having different impacts on the
digital dentistry market, likely boosting
unit sales while limiting growth for
dental operatory equipment. The continuous evolution of product materials
and the intense competition in the market are expected to exert a significant
impact that must be closely monitored
in the coming years.

and image quality, and it is just perfect when it is combined with the DTX
software. Digital 3D imaging allows
the discovery of unusual anatomy.
In the case of a patient who presented
complaining of pain and pressure on
his tooth after undergoing root canal
therapy some time before, careful
reading of a CBCT scan of the area
revealed a second canal in the central
incisor and enabled us to locate the
furcation (Figs. 1–3).
Endodontics is recognised as the
most complicated treatment in dentistry and the most challenging one.
The root canal system is an open pathway between the oral bacterial flora
and multiple sensitive tissues and
organs in our body. It is a dynamic
science that we learn about it every
day and poses new challenging cases
and enigmas to solve. Every material
and technique used should consider
the biocompatibility and longevity of
the treatment and of course how to
preserve the tooth structure whether
internally or externally. Simple yet very
efficient techniques should be part of
our daily practice.
Starting with the diagnostic part,
3D imaging is an essential tool to
complete the puzzle and find answers
and to prepare a full treatment plan
for a simple case as well as a complicated one. Artificial intelligence (AI) is
a great addition regarding 3D imaging.
For some time, I have been using the

Cryotherapy in endodontics, an
idea that I began applying several
years ago, has snowballed. It involves
using cold water in order to minimise
postoperative endodontic discomfort
to try to replace or minimise the use
of analgesics. This is a very simple yet
very effective solution to help our
patients to overcome pain after undergoing root canal treatment.
Irrigation in endodontics is widely
misunderstood, yet it is so simple
when we understand the chemicals
that we are using and what our goal
is and how to achieve it. By giving
each chemical the work or the target
that it is supposed to achieve and by
understanding chemical interactions—
irrigation is a matter of dealing with
different kinds of chemicals—we can
achieve better, much faster and safer
root canal disinfection. Before the use
of sodium hypochlorite, it took up to
20–30 minutes, and now it takes seconds. A bacterial level of zero is in our
reach, and it does not take rocket
science to achieve it. Zero bacteria
means that we can have a better prognosis for the root canal treatment and
higher success rates for our retreatment as well in a single visit and no
temporary dressing needed—the myth
of calcium hydroxide is no more.
By way of demonstration, consider
the case of a necrotic molar with a
relatively large radiolucency that we
treated with a root canal treatment in
a single visit following our irrigation
protocol (Figs. 4–6).
Nickel–titanium (NiTi) rotary files
were a great invention that changed the
world of endodontics, and the science of
this alloy keeps on developing. In 2006,
the first heat-treated files were released,
a game-changer in the production of
rotary files. The changes brought additional flexibility and torque resistance,
increasing the safety of using NiTi rotary
files. More recently, through yet another
innovation in this field, flexibility and
cutting resistance were combined in
one file. The ZenFlex and Traverse files
(Kerr Endodontics) have opened the
way for a new era in file production.
This innovation will give us the opportunity to use files in a very simple sequence whether in primary treatment
or retreatment (Fig. 7).
Zero apicectomy, the art of combining
root canal treatment and microsurgery
to preserve tooth integrity and no longer
removing the apex, has been proved
a very successful technique not only
in preserving the tooth structure but
also in recreating a new periodontal
ligament where the bone can grow
vertically—an idea that was impossible
before—in order to save the natural teeth,
a new approach in endodontic microsurgery.
In a trauma case in which there was an
absence of cortical bone and apical bone
around the mandibular central incisors
and a very deep pocket reaching the apical
area, a zero apicectomy and a root canal
treatment were done, and 18 months later,
against all odds, the bone had grown vertically, covering the buccal part of the root
almost completely, and the apical bone
was completely restored (Fig. 8).
These ideas and more are based
on understanding what the problem
is and how to create solutions that are
focused on the preservation of teeth
in their natural environment.

inhibits the natural protective functions
of saliva, such as neutralising acids and
remineralising enamel. This environment
may also create conditions conducive to
bacterial colonisation.
The advent of clear aligners,
digital scanners, 3D printing and
artificial intelligence is transforming
orthodontics. These technologies
offer patients a contemporary solution for achieving a straighter smile
conveniently and effectively. Clear
aligners are a particularly popular
choice, but according to dentist
Dr Ana Bokuchava, who is the international marketing manager at
Curaden, it is important to compensate for their side effects using the
right foam.
What are the common concerns
associated with clear aligners in
terms of oral health?
Clear aligners, while revolutionary,
present some challenges to oral health.
Common concerns include dry mouth,
halitosis, oral dysbiosis, increased biofilm accumulation, white spot lesions,
initial inflammation, and hypersensitivity.
Aligners are recognised as foreign
objects by the body. As such, they trigger
a natural defence mechanism, thereby
reducing saliva production. The resulting
decrease in salivary flow elevates the
risk of acid-producing bacteria, which
compromises enamel remineralisation
and fosters bacterial growth.
The intentionally tight fit of aligners
leads to reduced saliva contact too. This
What role does the Curaprox Aligner
Foam play in addressing the challenges
posed by clear aligners?
Aligners have shortcomings, but
using the right aligner foam helps. It is recommended to check out the ingredients of
aligner foams to make sure your patients
get the maximum benefit. It is also in the
interest of your patients to make sure that
the foam is not abrasive and does not
contain ingredients that can irritate the
gingivae. The Curaprox Aligner Foam’s key
ingredients include hydroxyapatite, hyaluronic acid, magnolol, an antibacterial combination of Citrox, cyclodextrin and polylysine,
and an enzymatic system. Combined, these
ingredients naturally protect and remineralise
the teeth while stimulating the salivary flow.
They fight plaque, keep the gingivae healthy
and tackle bad breath.
The versatile Curaprox Aligner Foam
stands as an essential choice for a confident, healthy smile. Ideal for daily care, it
caters to various dental needs, ensuring
protection and remineralisation. It is effective for post-bleaching procedures, poor
oral hygiene, dry mouth, enamel hypoplasia, and erosion.

Teaming with Planmeca to create a high-tech boutique experience
Dr Mohamed Bamashmous has
had a long and distinguished academic career. Recently, he decided to
branch out and pursue his vision of a
unique private clinic—one that blends
cutting-edge technology with personalised care. That dream has become
reality with the support of an extensive selection of Planmeca equipment.
“You could say I’m a bit of a technology geek. But I’m also very into
arts and handicrafts. I love dentistry
because it combines these aspects,”
Dr Bamashmous says. After starting
his dental studies in his native Saudi
Arabia, Dr Bamashmous continued his
education in the US at Boston University
Henry M. Goldman School of Dental
Medicine. He studied extensively at the
Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and became a
board-certified orthodontist and public
health dentist.
Fusing art and science
Since returning to Saudi Arabia
over 15 years ago, Dr Bamashmous has
been a staff member at King Abdulaziz
University in Jeddah. Currently, he
serves as chair of the Department of
Dental Public Health and as an associate
professor at the Faculty of Dentistry.
But the high points of his life extend
beyond academia.
“I am also the proud father of
a wonderful son named Adam,”
Dr Bamashmous is keen to add.
More recently, he brought to life
AQUA Dent Clinics, a new dental practice that was carefully built from the
ground up in 2021. It was inspired by
his vision of fusing the art and science
of dentistry into a complete boutique
experience. In addition to being the
co-founder, Dr Bamashmous works as
an orthodontist at the clinic.
“AQUA Dent Clinics is more than
a dental practice; we have a holistic
approach. The design and the ambiance
are relaxing. A visit to our clinic feels
less like a dental appointment and
more like a wellness experience,” he
explains.
During breaks, I can take a walk
by the sea. The building itself is a
business building. I lived in Boston
and San Francisco before and have
always loved the experience of entering a luxury tower. It’s a different
type of vibe and an aspect of life in
the city that I fell in love with,”
Dr Bamashmous says.
Of course, the treatments themselves are the central part of the entire
patient experience. The clinic offers
a wide range of treatments, including
cosmetic dentistry, orthodontics, periodontics and endodontic surgery.
“Our patients are generally not emergency patients. We do also see emergencies, but usually our patients come in for
holistic full treatments and want them
done right. I would consider us to be at
the top level of dentistry. We are worldclass. Our patients can get all kinds of
treatments of the best quality available
anywhere,” Dr Bamashmous explains.

urban area of Jeddah and offers a soothing escape from the busy surroundings. The azure waves of the Red Sea can be seen from the clinic’s windows. (All images: © Planmeca)
Everything is integrated
Dr Bamashmous’ passion for
technology is evident everywhere at
AQUA Dent Clinics. The high level of
care provided there is bolstered by an
impressive array of Planmeca equipment and software, including:
nine Planmeca Compact i5 dental
units;
a Planmeca Viso G7 CBCT imaging
unit;
four Planmeca ProX intra-oral radiographic units;
four Planmeca ProSensor HD intraoral sensors;
a Planmeca ProScanner 2.0 imaging
plate scanner;
a Planmeca Emerald S intra-oral scanner;
a Planmeca PlanMill 30 S milling unit;
a Planmeca Creo C5 3D printer; and
the Planmeca Romexis dental software platform
“My first encounter with Planmeca
was in 2005 during my studies in the US.
I had an incredibly positive experience
using a Planmeca panoramic and cephalometric imaging unit. Even back then,
software was a major part of the overall
experience,” Dr Bamashmous recounts.
Fast forward nearly two decades,
and software remains at the heart of
the Planmeca experience. The Romexis
software seamlessly integrates all equipment, creating a unified platform.
“Romexis is very easy and userfriendly. And the software always
complements the hardware. The best
part about it? It is all-in-one. You can
do nearly everything with the same
software. It’s beneficial to have
everything centralised in one place,”
said Dr Bamashmous.
AQUA Dent Clinics has a grand total
of nine Planmeca Compact i5 dental
units. In addition to their other qualities, the units utilise space in an
efficient manner and fully live up to
their name.
“One of the best features of the
Planmeca Compact i5 is its size. It
is very compact indeed. We often
also receive compliments about how
comfortable the patient chair is,”
Dr Bamashmous says.

orthodontic cases,” Dr Bamashmous
explains.
The high-level specialist clinic also
takes advantage of the latest innovations
in imaging. With excellent options for both
intra-oral and extra-oral imaging, the clinic
can cater for a wide range of imaging requirements and acquire exactly the right type
of image for each need, case and situation.
“We use the Planmeca Viso G7 a
great deal. The images are second to
“Very rarely, a patient might show
concern regarding radiographic imaging.
We then explain to them that we always
have the option to take a Planmeca
Ultra Low Dose image, which has a
lower dose than any traditional radiographic image—even lower than the
radiation exposure from flying on an
airplane,” Dr Bamashmous says.
Given his deep interest in technology, it comes as no surprise that
Dr Bamashmous has familiarised him-
4
Fig. 3: The overall concept is geared towards comprehensive care that goes beyond a need to fix a single urgent issue. Fig. 4: A clinician at AQUA Dent Clinics utilises Romexis software.
“The technology is all-in-one, so you
don’t need external devices. You can do
everything directly from the unit itself.
Everything is integrated.”
This integration extends to the
Planmeca Emerald S intra-oral scanner.
It can be plugged directly into any of
the Planmeca dental units and used
just like any other instrument.
“The Planmeca Emerald S is
very easy to use and became much
faster especially with the most
recent update. I mainly use it for
none. I can’t wait for the new software
release. I expect it to further unlock
the unit’s imaging potential with
AI tools that support diagnostics and
surgical planning,” Dr Bamashmous
states.
The topic of radiation can be a
sensitive one in radiographic imaging.
Fortunately, technologies such as the
Planmeca Ultra Low Dose protocol allow clinicians to capture high-quality
images at doses that have been proved
scientifically to be responsible and
safe.

self with all the software and hardware
at his clinic. He also points that clear
documentation helps to better understand the technology.
“Whenever I get new software or
equipment, I explore its features and
functionalities. If there is a manual, I go
through it as well. Planmeca does a really
good job with its technical and software
manuals,” Dr Bamashmous states.
Expanding dentistry
“The field of dentistry is very diverse
in Saudi Arabia. It is rapidly evolving in
the country with specialised care expanding and the use of technology growing,”
Dr Bamashmous explains.
Among the increased offerings in the
country, Dr Bamashmous and AQUA Dent
Clinics stand out with their special overall
concept and use of advanced technology.
The clinic has quickly transformed the
idea of what a visit to the dentist is like.

“Dentistry is often associated with
stress and pain, but during my studies,
I started thinking about someday combining dentistry with a spa experience—about
creating a comfortable environment in a
great location, a place where even employees
are excited to go to. It took time to realise
this vision, but it finally happened.”

Foundation (ORF) was relaunched
under its current name in 2016, and
its US section was initiated that
same year. In this interview, executive director Dr Martin Schuler
speaks about the society’s goals and
future developments as well as its
expectations for AEEDC Dubai this
year.
5
Dr Martin Schuler, executive director of the
Oral Reconstruction Foundation, is looking
forward to inspiring discussions with AEEDC
Dubai 2024 attendees.
Dr Schuler, could you please give
us deeper insight into the ORF’s
objectives?
From training and access to research to the world’s most exclusive
network of experts, the ORF opens
the doors to implantology and oral
tissue reconstruction. We support
talented young scientists and practitioners as well as projects in the
field of basic and applied research.
We also promote scientific exchange
between universities and industry,
especially in the field of clinical research. We do this through education
and training, lectures, seminars,
practical courses, live surgeries
and surgical partnerships. We are
convinced that close international
collaboration between universities,
practitioners, technicians and the
industry is the basis for the further
development of the scientific and
educational foundations of implantology and oral tissue reconstruction
in order to achieve our goal of bringing together science and education
to better serve the patient.
How do you envision the future of the
ORF in the upcoming years?
Under the leadership of our
current president, Dr Luca Cordaro,
the board of the ORF has developed
a vision for the next five years:
we want to become an established
platform for all dental professionals
to elaborate and shape the latest developments in implant dentistry and
oral tissue reconstruction. To achieve
this, we launched several new initiatives last year, including our OR Forums,
during a week-long roadshow in five
cities in China.
We are also in the process of
establishing regional organisations,
which we call “OR Districts”.
We have made a start in China, the US,
Germany and Spain. Regional organisations in Japan, the Middle East
and Africa will follow soon. In all
these districts, we will engage local
key opinion leaders to organise
educational events under the ORF
umbrella.
In addition, the ORF has supported research grants since its beginnings. We have funded around
200 research grants, to the amount
of over €5 million, which have led
to over 230 publications. More than
60 research projects are currently
underway, and we will keep investing
into research.
Which educational events are on the
agenda this year?
We have a full and varied programme of events this year—from
round tables to symposia—but I am
most looking forward to our first two
international symposia in the Asia
Pacific and Middle East and Africa
regions. Under the theme “The age of
speed”, we will start with our symposium in Abu Dhabi in the UAE on
3 and 4 May. The scientific committee,
led by internationally prominent
periodontist Dr Homa Zadeh and
Dr Abdelsalam Elaskary, the current
president of the Arabic Society of
Oral Implantology, has put together
a great programme with top-class
speakers to attract dental professionals
from around the globe who seek to
stay up to date with the latest industry standards, strive to develop new
methods and learn from the best.
We will then round off the year with
our second international symposium
in Bangkok in Thailand from 14 to
16 November.
What do you personally expect from
your participation at AEEDC Dubai
2024?
In order to meet the needs of our
local partners, key opinion leaders
and other dental professionals, an
open conversation on a personal
level is essential. The Middle East is
a fast-developing region, and my top
priority at AEEDC is therefore to meet
with as many people on-site as possible.
Only by understanding local needs
can the ORF help provide the tailored
education and training necessary for
success in the region. 7

Andrew Medical is an innovative
start-up company from Italy that
specialises in the development and
production of 3D-printed titanium
dental implants. The company’s implants are characterised by a rootlike
shape with a compact solid core and
an external porous surface capable of
stimulating bone growth. This special
design presents a 3D surface of apparent cancellous bone to bone cells, imitating the bone structure into which
the implant is placed. This recreation
of nature’s inherent complexity with
what the company calls a “mimetic”
structure surpasses conventional
2D textured surfaces. The implant also
features an effective conical connection
system and employs platform switching.
Andrew Medical implants are to be placed
sub-crestally to ensure reference performance.
According to in vitro studies, the structure
of an implant surface can influence the
interaction between the implant material and

Test results have highlighted that
the open cell form with interconnected pores, resembling the inner
structure of native bone, allows cells
to better adhere inside the specimen. Results have demonstrated
that the inner design and postproduction treatments on titanium
surfaces have a dynamic influence
on dental pulp stem cell behaviour
towards adhesion and the formation
of osteoblasts for osteogenesis.
Andrew Medical offers all these
advantages with its implants as well

Preserving as much healthy
tooth substance as possible when
repairing minor carious defects is the
most important objective in modern
dental care. This is only possible if
the instruments used permit a gentle
mode of operation without causing
discomfort to the patient. The 1SXM
carbide bur from BUSCH is such an
instrument.
Firstly, the bur has a special
cutting geometry which allows the
user to work in the cavity with low
vibration and without stressing the
patient.
Secondly, its extremely slender
neck permits a clearer view of the
work area. Therefore, carious tissue
can be removed precisely and without damaging the tooth substance,
requiring only a minimal cavity

CERAMILL MATRON FROM AMANN GIRRBACH OFFERS MAXIMUM PRECISION AND SURFACE QUALITY IN A NEW DESIGN
such as titanium or cobalt–chromium up
to 16 mm in-house,” explained Amann
Girrbach product manager Daniel Leitner.
Maximum precision of detail
n As a pioneer in dental CAD/CAM technology, Amann Girrbach is one of the
leading innovators and preferred fullservice providers in digital dental prosthetics. The company has now launched
Ceramill Matron, the first fifth-generation milling machine on the market. It
offers superior features compared with
older machines, including outstanding
precision and excellent milling results
with intuitive handling and maximum
user friendliness. Ceramill Matron can
be used for processing a wide range of
materials, particularly carbide, is suitable
for autonomous order processing of up to
eight blanks owing to an integrated performance blank changer and can be fully
integrated into the digital workflow.
Ceramill Matron is optimally designed for the precise and fast processing
of carbide and is equipped with the latest
tool technology and a 3 mm or 6 mm milling shaft. “The Ceramill Matron offers a
completely new digital experience and
achieves results with a precision that is on
a par with any milling centre. It can even
be used to effortlessly machine hard metals
The 45° arrangement of the A- and
B-axes, providing vibration-damping properties, ensures high rigidity and accuracy
in the milling process. “With the Ceramill
Matron, we have achieved unprecedented
running smoothness, which has an extremely positive effect on the surface
quality and the service life of the milling
cutters,” explained Leitner. The five-axis
technology and the machine’s enhanced
capabilities allow operation at extreme
angles, even in areas of pronounced undercuts, resulting in very high precision.
In combination with radio-frequency
identification technology, a magnetically
interchangeable 11-position tool holder
called the SnapMag makes tool changes
quick and convenient. Furthermore, an
unlimited number of cutters can be easily
introduced via a plug-and-play solution.
With intelligent preloading, many materials and indications can be processed
without the need for changing.
Autonomous working
and intuitive control
The Ceramill Matron’s eight-blank
changer enables fully automated work
processes in dental production. The control
of the processes is intuitive, and a highresolution, 21.5 in. display guides the user
conveniently through all work steps.
According to Leitner, integrating the
milling machine into the digital workflow is also very simple: “The Ceramill
Matron is the ideal product for dental
practices and laboratories that wish to
drive digitisation of their workflows forward and have the highest demands in
terms of quality and cost-effectiveness.
It is precisely this combination of performance and joy in craftsmanship that
we wish to convey with our campaign
slogan ‘Serious Fun’.”
The Ceramill Matron’s first users
are enthusiastic about the new milling
machine. Among them, German master
dental technician Florian Barthel said:
“For me, the Ceramill Matron can be described in four words: intuitive, powerful,
trend-setting and multifunctional. It closes
the gap between the Ceramill Motion 3
and Ceramill Matik in terms of design and
is also absolutely future-proof, supportimg
updates for future developments.” 7

D-BAR—THE EVOLUTION IN CLASS II MALOCCLUSION TREATMENT
Advantages of using D-bar
Class II malocclusion constitutes
a high percentage of orthodontically
treated cases. Its prevalence is
highly variable and is estimated to
be between 39% and 93% in children
and adolescents. Class II malocclusion
may be associated with skeletal abnormalities in about 75% of patients,
who usually present with characteristic mandibular retrognathism resulting from a shortened mandible
and maxillary protrusion.
Class II malocclusion carries a
greater risk of dental trauma, a more
negative perception of facial and
dental aesthetics, a negative impact
on quality of life and self-esteem, a
greater predisposition to periodontal
disease and tooth wear, and a reduction of oropharyngeal space and
greater incidence of sleep disorders.
Current orthodontic treatment philosophies of Class II malocclusion
have been oriented towards conservative treatment modalities to avoid
extractions.
Molar distalisation, one approach
to treating Class II malocclusion, is
used to lengthen the dental arch by
posterior movement of the buccal
segment teeth to provide space in
the maxillary arch. Thus, it is mainly
indicated to treat moderate dental
or skeletal protrusion of the maxillary arch, mild to moderate crowding
and when patients refuse extraction.
Molar distalisation can be accomplished using either extra-oral appliances or intra-oral appliances. The
Precision: The locking system
has been designed with tight tolerances for greater treatment efficacy
to minimise canine or inter-arch
movements.
Effectiveness: The extremely
mesial hook position increases the
effectiveness of the device.
Time-saving: Correct bonding
on the molar is easy, owing to the
mesiodistal and occlusal–gingival
positioning lines. Laser marking facilitates identifying the proper size.
Treatment time reduction: D-bar
improves the molar relationship,
making the orthodontic treatment
faster.
disadvantages of extra-oral devices
are their unpleasant appearance and
dependence on patient compliance,
making them the least acceptable
choice for clinicians and patients.
A wide variety of intra-oral distaliser
appliances are available. However,
the forces exerted by most of them
result in undesired dental effects,
such as the proclination of maxillary
incisors, bite opening, molar tipping
and loss of mandibular anterior
anchorage.
lationship by minimising canine
over-extrusion. It has a highly aesthetic design and offers greater comfort and reduced treatment times.
The clinical principle of Class II
correction using D-bar is based on
establishing a Class I relationship
at the beginning of treatment when
patient compliance is high and before
initiating the correction of the position and alignment of individual
teeth with fixed appliances or clear
aligner therapy.
D-bar is a directly bonded orthodontic appliance that provides a
Class II treatment solution for
primary, permanent or mixed dentition and improves the molar re-
D-bar consists of a molar socket
and a bar, supplied unassembled
and bonded bilaterally to the maxillary canines and first molars. The
canine pad, which carries a mesial
hook for placement of intermaxillary elastics, is bonded to the anterior third of the clinical crown. It is
possible to replace just the bar or
change its size during therapy if
the clinical conditions require it.
This feature makes the D-bar flexible,
reducing and simplifying the clinic’s
inventory. It can also be integrated
into the digital workflow and placed
by indirect bonding; in fact, using
two separate components makes it
possible to incorporate the device
into templates or transfer jigs.
D-bar is available in 12 sizes differing by 1 mm increments, from size
16 to 27. Measurement identification is easy and fast owing to laser
marking.
Comfort: Its smooth and low-profile
design improves patient comfort and
compliance during treatment.
D-bar is available in individual
packaging and sets. Single packaging contains two bars of the same
size, two molar sockets and one ruler.
The set includes 24 bars with two of
each size, 24 molar sockets, a tweezer
and 24 rulers.

THE CONCEPT OF IMMEDIACY IN IMPLANT DENTISTRY—WHY CHOOSING THE RIGHT PARTNER MATTERS
Patients’ increasing demands for
shorter treatment times, the growing
evidence for predictable success1 and
the positive effects on productivity and
growth have made immediate treatment
protocols a popular choice in implant
dentistry.
Backed by its scientific approach
and building on its legacy of innovation,
Straumann now takes immediacy to the
next level of reliability and efficiency.
1
With ImmediaXy, Straumann offers
an ecosystem of solutions that are designed to enable dental professionals to
confidently and efficiently provide their
patients with immediate temporisation—
whenever possible and clinically sensible—
whether in single tooth, multiple teeth
or full-arch cases.2, 3–7
Immediacy in daily routine—

Straumann users begin their immediacy journey with dedicated education
from highly skilled and experienced experts because the company believes that
a profound knowledge about all important parameters and selection criteria is
half the battle when it comes to immediate procedures.
They then experience Straumann

solutions, which are designed to enable
immediate treatments with predictable
outcomes.5, 8, 9 Straumann ImmediaXy
makes the benefits of digital dentistry
accessible—either in-house or outsourced—
and is compatible with third-party solutions.
It is a modular system that can be tailored to support every workflow.
The Straumann X-Family—
confidence beyond
immediacy at every level
When it comes to the choice of
implant, Straumann BLX and TLX with
dynamic bone management have been
developed to make immediate protocols
achievable, predictable and minimally
invasive in all bone types. Straumann BLX
and TLX feature the same endosteal
design, which means the same drill set
is shared for both systems. Thanks to the
high mechanical strength properties
offered by Straumann’s Roxolid alloy,
the BLX and TLX lines allow for reduced
invasiveness, and the Ø 3.75 mm is suitable for all tooth positions.7,10–12
BLX is the new generation of bonelevel implants offering a simple yet versatile
portfolio with under-contoured prosthetics
for excellent soft-tissue management.
With TLX, the proven benefits of tissue
level are now available also for immediate
workflows. Throughout Straumann’s wide
portfolio of solutions for immediate treatment protocols, clinicians are genuinely
empowered to treat a wide range of clinical
indications, from the straightforward to the
most challenging cases.
Immediate loading with
long-lasting results
To round it all out, users can benefit
from Straumann’s SLActive high perfor-
mance surface with extensive healing
potential. It stands for high predictability
and accelerated osseointegration.13–23
The long-term clinical data from
a randomised, controlled, multicentre
study demonstrates the impressive performance of SLActive with immediate
loading. The SLActive implants showed
a ten-year survival rate of 98.2% in this
challenging protocol.2
Additionally, recent studies show
an outstanding clinical performance of
SLActive implants even in very challenging treatment protocols and in patients
with compromised health.24–26
In addition to the surface, the material can contribute to the implant’s clinical
success too. In a recently published doubleblind randomised controlled multicentre
study, the Roxolid implants showed a ten-
year survival rate of survival rate of 98.9%
while titanium implants showed a
survival rate of 95.8% after the same
period.27 In comparison with titanium,
Roxolid leads to more efficient blood clot
formation,28 a more favourable immune
response,29 an enhanced osteogenic activity
around implants30 and a superior quality
of the bone–implant interface.31
Users can now push boundaries with
confidence, since our end-to-end solutions
are designed to enable immediate treatments with predictable outcomes.

luting cement Medicem is indicated
for luting crowns, bridges, inlays,
onlays, pins, posts and orthodontic
bands. During application, the material flows and provides optimal
surface wetting of the restoration,
but when transferred into the oral
cavity, it becomes firm and stable.
This simplifies the working process,
especially in the mandible. The prolonged soft-elastic phase during setting allows easy removal of excess
material, and the excess material is
easy to lift off with a probe or other
suitable instrument.
Owing to its optimal composition
of glasses and filler particle size,
Medicem possesses a very low film
thickness. This low film thickness
allows a precise fit of the restoration
and ensures perfect attachment and
occlusal accuracy.
Medicem is available as a handmixed version and in application

RAPID RELIEF FROM MOUTH ULCERS WITH CURASEPT AFTERAPID
n Mouth ulcers are one of the most
common oral cavity conditions and
are usually associated with discomfort and pain, which consequently
involve limitations in swallowing
and a considerable increase in
salivation and can impact a person’s
dietary choices and overall quality
of life.
The patented formula’s innovation stems from the synergy of these
ingredients within Curasept Afterapid.
The formulation directly addresses
lesions in the layers most affected
by the degenerative process, stimulating cell proliferation and wound
repair and ultimately leading to a
reduction in healing time.
Although various aetiologies
have been postulated, the causes
of mouth ulcers are still partly
unknown and are probably interdependent. The main causes include
stress, psychosomatic factors, food
allergies and intolerances, autoimmune syndromes, hormonal problems, infectious diseases, genetic
predispositions and diet-related disorders. In some cases, mouth ulcers
can be a simple consequence of local
injuries, such as bites when chewing
and erosion caused by excessively
vigorous use of toothbrushes, interdental brushes or other oral hygiene
instruments.
By leveraging the action of polynucleotides, Curasept Afterapid preserves cell viability and facilitates
the proliferation of blood vessels and
other tissue. Concurrently, the presence of hyaluronic acid fosters an
optimal microenvironment for the
neoformation of connective tissue
and epithelium, offering protection
against potential infections. This concerted approach accelerates healing
processes, leading to a noticeable
reduction in pain symptoms from
the first use.
The onset of a mouth ulcer is
often preceded by a burning feeling
that normally presents one or two
days beforehand in the area where
the lesion will form, even when the
mucosa has a normal appearance.
After this first phase, localised redness appears in the affected area,
and this evolves into a round,
white-yellowish lesion. Mouth ulcers
that form in this manner are both
spontaneously painful and painful
upon contact with any instrument,
such as orthodontic appliances.
Swelling is another peculiarity of
this type of lesion.
Curasept Afterapid is a line of
oral healthcare products with an
innovative, patented formulation
that includes exclusive ingredients
with protective, anti-inflammatory,
anti-oedematous and reparative elements, such as tea tree and manuka
oil, glycyrrhetinic acid, allantoin
and ruscogenin. Unhydrolysed and
unsalified hyaluronic acid, characterised by three distinct molecular
weights, plays a pivotal role in mitigating inflammation and fostering the
repair and safeguarding of gingival
and mucosal cells.
Furthermore, the formula incorporates plant-derived DNA/RNA
fractions, renowned for their antiinflammatory properties, capable of
activating biological mechanisms
conducive to tissue repair.
The Curasept Afterapid line consists of three products: a mouthwash,
a protective gel and a spray. 7

VOCO RETRACTION PASTE—A MUST-HAVE FOR EVERY PRACTICE
The basis for a perfect impression
is an exposed and dry sulcus. Softtissue management is often the key
to success of Class II and V fillings as
well as for permanent or temporary
cementation of restorations, especially when using the adhesive
technique with products that do not
tolerate moisture very well. VOCO
has provided the perfect solution:
VOCO Retraction Paste, for the effective, temporary opening of the sulcus and its isolation from moisture.
This product is also the ideal complement to the V-Posil precision impression material.
VOCO Retraction Paste offers
the prerequisites for successful classic or digital precision impressions,
as well as for cavity preparation for
Class II or V restorations, as well as
preparation for either permanent or
temporary cementation of restorations. The paste can be used as an
compatible with commercially available composite dispensers such as
the VOCO Caps Dispenser and is sufficient for up to three sulci.
The SingleDose Cap offers the
advantage that each patient receives
his or her very own product, an
easy way to avoid the risk of crosscontamination as well as other
potential for contamination.

Perfect results,
easy handling
VOCO Retraction Paste’s shade
contrasts well against the gingiva,
facilitating working in difficult-to-see
areas in particular. The material is
applied directly from the cap into
the sulcus and can be easily dosed
and applied with its very slender
and slightly flexible cannula. The
paste is easy to press out and has
very good flow viscosity. During
application, the aluminium chloride
paste, having an astringent effect,
temporarily fills the sulcus, stops
any bleeding and eliminates moisture.
VOCO Retraction Paste only re-
quires a short exposure time, has
a neutral taste and can be easily and
fully rinsed off.

Germany and one of the leading
manufacturers in the industry. All
its products are manufactured at the

n In 2023, Neodent celebrated its 30th anniversary. Throughout its history, the company
has brought affordable dental implants to
patients in 90 countries. Neodent implants
offer versatile prosthetic capabilities, catering
to diverse patient needs.
The company’s philosophy emphasises
predictability, reliability and immediate aesthetic results achieved through stable solutions
and the immediate loading technique.
The global flagship product of Neodent
is the Grand Morse implant system, the
result of over 20 years of experience in
dental implants. It was developed based on
the inside-out concept, starting from the
core of the implant to the prosthetic interface.
The result is a solution that combines
mechanical strength and versatile prosthetic
solutions—from single-unit to multi-unit and
from conventional to digital.
Neodent Grand Morse Helix features
a fully dual tapered body design and is
an innovative hybrid implant that maximises treatment options and efficiency in
Type 1, 2, 3 and 4 bone. It is designed to
achieve high primary stability and is suitable
for both hard bone and challenging situations, such as soft bone and extraction
sockets.
This comprehensive system is designed
to address professional needs, ranging from
EasyGuide, a fully guided technique focusing
on predictable results, efficient protocols
and patient acceptance, to more complex
cases handled by NeoArch, an optimised
solution for immediate fixed treatments
in edentulous patients, even with severe
maxillary atrophy.
Constant innovation
and evolution
“Neodent started small, as a family company, and conquered the world with its technique and technology. The aesthetic issue has
always been very important to the business,
from the first titanium implants to our latest
products, such as the Neodent Zi ceramic
implant system,” explained Neodent CEO
Matthias Schupp.
A new dental implant system developed
by Neodent based on demand from dentists
around the world and in line with new
market trends, Zi was launched worldwide.
The ceramic implant is a contact metal-free
solution that allows for high-end aesthetics,
owing to its natural colour and high translucency compared with metals.
Additionally, the two-piece system with
the ZiLock connection provides a secure fit
between the implant and abutment, and the
naturally tapered body is designed for predictable immediate treatment in Types 1, 2, 3
and 4 bone.
“Neodent still has a lot of history to tell,
a lot to evolve. Our philosophy is what will
guide us towards the future, supporting new
products. We are very excited for the next
three decades. Neodent today is more than
just a dental implant company. We provide
complete solutions to achieve new smiles,
including implants, prostheses, ClearCorrect

more,” added Schupp. 7

MICROCOPY—THE NO. 1 SELLING STERILE BUR IN THE US NOW AVAILABLE IN THE MIDDLE EAST
To complement its bur line,
Microcopy offers NeoDrys, a leading brand of saliva absorbents,
NeoShine advanced two-step polishers, NeoDiamond finishing
strips and Flaps bite tabs. The
NeoDrys effectively absorbs moisture from the parotid gland for up
to 15 minutes, guaranteeing a dry
surface area. They are a superior
alternative to cotton rolls and provide an ideal treatment environment for composite fillings and
sealant placement, for example.
The NeoShine polishers consist of
pointed and cup-shaped polishers
that smooth the surface of the tooth
and then give it added lustre.
n For over 30 years, Microcopy has
been the US market leader in
pre-sterilised carbide and diamond
burs. The burs are known for their
high quality, strength and excellent cutting efficiency. Over the
past few years, the company has
expanded its business, and today,
Microcopy’s products are available
in over 55 countries. Now, Microcopy
is excited to launch its products to
dentists in the Middle East too.
Microcopy’s portfolio includes
over 3,000 types of burs. All of the
burs are gamma-sterilised and individually packaged in clear polythene packets, eliminating the need
to autoclave the burs prior to use
and preventing the risk of crosscontamination. Owing to this high
safety standard, Microcopy’s burs
have become the bur of choice
for many general dental practitioners, dental surgeons and endodontists.
The bur shanks are made of
Swiss medical stainless steel that
provides the burs with innate
strength and durability. The burs
have a proprietary shank design
that adheres to the strictest shank
diameter tolerances in the industry.
This guarantees that the bur per-
fectly fits into the handpiece and
reduces handpiece wear. The design also ensures that the bur
turns tightly on its axis, preventing
bur chatter and providing a precise
cut.
standard. With more diamond cutting power, users can cut through
dental tissue with greater ease and
precision. This translates into faster
treatments, reduced chair time and
improved patient comfort.
Microcopy’s flagship diamond
bur is NeoDiamond, which offers
excellent cutting efficiency because it has up to 20% more diamond exposure than the industry
The company’s NeoBurr carbide line too is unique, since it
includes a family of burs specifically designed to have superior
strength. Microcopy invented a
blended-neck design in which the
burs are manufactured with a very
wide neck that makes them less
susceptible to breakage. In addition, many of these burs are made
entirely of tungsten carbide, eliminating the welding point altogether
and making the burs inherently
stronger. In third-party independent testing, these burs were shown
to be up to 70% stronger than the
competition.
The NeoDiamond finishing
strips come in different degrees
of coarseness and enable precise
interproximal finishing reduction.
The easy-to-use Flaps bite tabs hold
the radiographic film or sensor
securely, allowing full occlusion
and providing visual reference for
accurate placement and alignment. 7

Palm Jumeirah
Location: Off the Jumeirah
coastal area
Public transport: rta.ae
The Palm Jumeirah is an artificially
created archipelago off the coastline of
Dubai. Viewed from above, it resembles
a stylised palm tree and was built from
reclaimed land mass. It is part of a larger
series of developments called the Palm
Islands. The island is well developed
with roads and public transport, allowing
visitors to easily access the various restaurants and attractions. To explore the
Palm Jumeirah from a different perspective, visitors can book a trip in a yacht
or speedboat around the archipelago or—
to see the palm tree shape for themselves—
skydive above it.
