Dental surgeries, tooth extractions, implants and other types of
dental procedures often are followed
by unpleasant side effects. Almost
immediately after an invasive dental
procedure, patients experience swelling, discomfort and pain. These side
effects may last hours, days and even
weeks.
Dentists often prescribe painkilling, pain-relieving and antiinflammatory drugs to alleviate
post-procedural pain. Also, to reduce
swelling after the procedure, dentists recommend patients use cryotherapy. Some of the most common
oral cryotherapy methods available
to patients are an external ice pack or
holding ice chips in the mouth.
External ice packs, however, cannot get to the source of pain and
swelling inside the mouth, and holding ice in the mouth can be extremely
uncomfortable.
