Byrd, DDS, PhD; Maria L. Geisinger, DDS, MS; and Chun-Teh Lee, DDS, MS, DMSc, are the 2019 recipients of the SUNSTAR Innovation Grant. Each winner will receive $30,000 for their research projects as part of the AAP’s partnership with oral health and technology company SUNSTAR, which has committed to awarding scientific grants to AAP members whose investigations show significant potential to advance the specialty of periodontics. Byrd’s research project, “An Atlas of Experimental Gingivitis in Humans at Single Cell Resolution,” aims to develop chairside tools to predict gin- givitis to periodontitis conversion (i.e., at-risk individuals) and to develop specific adjuvant therapies for periodontitis-afflicted individuals based on the principles of precision medicine. “Recently, there has been an exponential increase in our understanding of human diseases,” Byrd said. “However, even for common oral diseases like periodontitis, we have just begun to grasp the complexity of interactions at play.” Geisinger’s research project, “Development of Multimedia Educational Materials for Caregivers to Enable Optimal Oral Hygiene Provisions for Patients with Dementia,” intends to develop multimedia tools that can be used to educate professional and see GRANT, page 4 8[2] => [3] => [4] => from page one 4 GRANT from page 1 7 familial caregivers for patients with moderate to severe dementia about delivery of oral hygiene. “Our team at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, in conjunction with our geriatric specialist nursing faculty, has developed a protocol that reduces care resistant behavior during oral hygiene delivery to dementia patients,” Geisinger said. Lee’s research project, “Improving Periodontal Health through a Precision Periodontal Health Care Chart,” aims to effectively educate patients, monitor their risk profile for periodontitis progression and improve treatment outcomes using a Precision Periodontal Health Care Chart in the electronic health record system. Members of the AAP’s Research Submissions Committee examine all abstracts against criteria established by SUNSTAR and the academy. AAP Annual Meeting — November 3, 2019 Bird, Geisinger and Lee are the fourth, fifth and sixth recipients of the award. “These three projects have the potential to have a profound impact on the practice of periodontics and the quality of care received by periodontal patients,” said Richard T. Kao, DDS, PhD, president of the AAP. Tom Raish, senior brand manager, Guidor of SUNSTAR Americas, said: “This year’s work by the SUNSTAR Innovation Grant recipients continues to provide support toward the commitment to improving oral health and prevention of periodontal disease. We at SUNSTAR are pleased to partner with the AAP in providing this platform for scientific research and, subsequently, the improvement of patient health.” Bird, Geisinger and Lee will present their results at a future meeting. Clinicians seeking a successful start in ceramic implantology and to expand their choice for patients can thus gain peace of mind with this easy-to-adopt solution, the company said. With the X-Guide system, clinicians further have a new treatment option for same-day guided surgery available, now that DTX Studio Implant empowers this innovative system for dynamic 3-D navigation. Treatment plans from DTX Studio Implant (formerly NobelClinician) can be quickly delivered to the patient, facilitating a workflow for diagnostics, implant planning and dynamically navigated implant surgeries, even during emergency interventions where computer-assisted surgeries until now could not be fully applied. The connection between DTX Studio and X-Guide aims for clinicians to achieve high precision and shorter time-to teeth treatments, including screw-retained provisionalisation with full three-dimensional control of their implant site preparation and dynamically monitored implant insertion. On the day of treatment, the clinician carries out the 3-D (CB)CT scan and the intraoral surface scans, creates the treatment plan in DTX Studio Implant and immediately exports it with all the planning components to X-Guide. Similar to a GPS in a car, X-Guide provides stable, lag-free, real-time 3-D intraoral guidance of the drill and implant position in relation to patient anatomy, according to the company. X-Guide is manufactured by X-Nav, a North America-based innovator in dental 3-D navigation that has exclusively partnered with Nobel Biocare. The patented IR feature enables improved infection control by letting practitioners operate the headlight without touching the system. The IR headlights use a built-in infrared signal to enable turning the light on or off simply and safely. Onboard biometrics sense the position of the headlight to filter out unintended signals while working. Designs for Vision has added the High Definition Imaging to all of its headlights, including the LED DayLite® WireLess™ IR and the LED DayLite WireLess Mini, providing a lightweight cordless solution with light intensity comparable to many corded headlights. You can choose High Definition Imaging with either a wired or wireless design, and any of the HDi headlights will illuminate the entire oral cavity. Designs for Vision’s WireLess headlights free users from being tethered to a battery pack. Prior technology married a cordless light to one pair of loupes via a cumbersome integration of the batteries and electronics into the frame. The compact design of the LED DayLite WireLess headlights are independent of any frame/loupes. The LED DayLite Micro HDi uses the new HDi with a lightweight headlight in combination with the Micro power pack. The Micro power pack is the lightest and smallest power pack. The complete unit includes two power packs, and each power pack can run up to 10 hours.[15] => [16] => exhibitors 16 AAP Annual Meeting — November 3, 2019 Tapered Pro implants: A predictable solution for immediate treatment By BioHorizons Staff n Immediate implant treatment requires predictability. Tapered Pro implants have been developed based on more than 10 years of tapered implant success. The unique design elements provide a predictable solution for immediate treatment, according to BioHorizons, the company behind the product. The Tapered Pro implant design features a tapered body and deep buttress threads to provide primary stability. The proprietary buttress thread design compressively loads bone, while the tapered body produces a progressive increase in insertion torque during implant placement. The end cutting, self-tapping thread design of the tapered region of the implant allows for controlled implant placement, even in challenging sites, according to the company. These features also held to disperse bone chips throughout the osteotomy. The collar of the implant is designed with a reduced diameter to preserve vital bone while maintaining a platform switching design. The unique Laser-Lok microchannels on the implant collar create a connective tissue attachment and retain crestal bone, allowing for better control of esthetic outcomes, the company asserts. Laser-Lok is a proprietary surface treatment exclusively used on BioHorizons implants. Its success in maintaining soft tissue and retaining crestal bone levels can be attributed to more than 25 years of research, including in vitro, animal and human studies. The surface is developed using laser ablation to create circumferential, cell-sized microchannels around the collar of the implant. The optimal size of these channels allows for attachment and organization of both osteoblasts and fibroblasts. Laser-Lok is the only surface shown to attract a physical, con- 5 BioHorizons’ line of Tapered Pro implants. This attachment helps to inhibit epithelial downgrowth and maintain levels of crestal bone for superior esthetic results, according to the company. The prosthetic connection of Tapered Pro implants utilizes a conical internal hex design for a stable biological seal and a rigid connection, the company asserts. The implants are fully compatible with the current line of authentic BioHorizons abutments and prosthetic parts. The prosthetic geometry of both the implants and the abutments are color-coded using anodization, providing a simple and reliable method to match the correct components together. The Tapered Pro implants are also compatible with the BioHorizons surgical kit and the BioHorizons guided surgery kit. The protocols for osteotomy development utilize the current line of tapered drills, with protocols for placement in soft bone or dense bone. Like the rapidly growing $50 billion organic market, ceramic implants are here to stay. Not only can ceramic implants help us to improve the health and cosmetics of our patients, they can serve as a practice differentiator, driving profitable and loyal patients. According to studies, the market share of ceramic implants is currently 2-3 percent but is predicted to represent 24 percent by 2022. For practitioners, this means the time is now to incorporate them into your practice and join the quickest growing market opportunity in dental implantology. Modern ceramic implants have come a long way from the monocrystalline alumina implants during the Brånemark days. Now made of zirconia oxide (Zr02), they are no longer one piece, smooth or difficult to place or restore. Leading the evolution and modernization of ceramic implants is ZERAMEX,® a Switzerland-based manufacturer of ceramic implants with FDA approval since 2016 and current distribution throughout the United States. ZERAMEX XT is a twopiece, screw-retained system that functions surgically and restorative like current titanium implants. The XT system is tapered in design, has an internal connection and the unique VICARBO® screw creates a seal against bacteria and micromovement. The current product offer has restorative flexibility with multiple abutment choices and will soon have scan bodies and a complete digital workflow with fully customized prosthetics. Modern ceramic implants now offer the same ease of use as current titanium implants, according to the company. Here are three reasons you should consider adding ceramic implants to 5 A look at implants, from the 1980s through today. (Illustration/Provided by ZERAMEX) your armamentarium: 1. Demand for metal-free implants is growing as patients are seeking more natural and biocompatible products and asking their dentists about alternatives to titanium implants. If your practice is close to a Whole Foods market or other organic market, you likely have patients who would appreciate the choice of a non-metal solution. Your practice could be missing this same patient as they search for a solution fulfilling their dental needs. 2. Patients have become more educated and demanding. Not only do they want a tooth replacement for functionality, but they are demanding exceptional esthetics. In thin tissue type and anterior cases, we have all witnessed occasional greying and metal transparency. Ceramic implants are white, often eliminating the need for tissue graft- For more information To learn more about ZERAMEX, visit zeramexusa.com/offer. ing. Ceramic implants should be presented as a solution for all single tooth cases in the anterior. Patient demand for cosmetic solutions should be a strong consideration in the offerings provided. 3. Ceramic implants are worthy of consideration because of the inherent esthetic characteristics of zirconia as well as its friendly biological properties. The fact is soft tissue has documented greater affinity for ceramic implants over titanium implants. Recent research raises valid concerns about the biological properties of titanium, especially with regards to peri-implantitis. Individuals with specific polymorphisms (SNPs) are even at greater risk both from a dental and systemic point of view. At the same time, research on zirconia is quite positive and progressing by leaps and bounds, according to the company. Ceramic implants have documented reduction in plaque and bacterial attraction and are not susceptible to corrosion over time. Soft tissue around a zirconia implant is similar to that in soft tissue around natural teeth. As more research becomes available about long-term results, ceramic implants will become the preferred choice of many dental implantologists for biological, cosmetic and softtissue results, the company asserts.
