n It’s the 100th Annual Meeting, Scientific Session
and Exhibition of the American Association of Oral
and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), and McCormick Place here in Chicago is filled with approximately 4,000 oral and maxillofacial surgeons,
academic faculty members, residents and office
professionals — all here to partake in educational
offerings, networking and new technology.
There are plenty of new opportunities this year.
A new educational program features nine separate
tracks. Also new at AAOMS is a World Café, where
senior surgeons are addressing patient cases and
best practices, and attendees are able to connect

n Gen. Colin L. Powell delivered the
keynote address to a standing-roomonly audience Wednesday afternoon
at the 100th meeting of the American
Association of Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgeons. The theme of his speech
was “Leadership: Taking Charge,” but
the former secretary of state and
chairman of the joint chiefs of staff
also commented on the current political climate.
Powell called for universal health
care, better educational opportunities
and more compassion for immigrants.
He also offered humorous anecdotes
of growing up in the Bronx, his early
jobs mopping floors and working in
a toy store, and dealing with Ronald
Reagan, Vladimir Putin and many
others.
At the conclusion of the talk,
AAOMS President Brett L. Ferguson
facilitated several questions for Powell from the audience.

The Chalmers J. Lyons Memorial
Lecture, taking place today from
10 to 11:30 a.m. in Room W375, focuses
on how induced pluripotent stem cells
may be used for tissue regeneration.
There’s also a hands-on cadaver
workshop, meet-the-expert and master class sessions, team learning sessions and much more. In addition,
more than 30 practice-management
sessions are being offered.
On the show floor, exhibiting companies are showcasing their products, many of which are making their
debut here at AAOMS 2018.
Among the product introductions
is the Planmeca Viso imaging system, on display in booth No. 1829.
According to Planmeca, Viso includes
2-D, 3-D and optional cephalometric
modalities, offers improved patient
positioning, simpler field-of-view
adjustments, excellent image quality and intelligent patient movement
correction.
“Planmeca Viso is designed to
capture outstanding images at a low
patient dose,” the company said in
a press release. “With high image
quality, exceptional durability and
standard Planmeca Ultra Low Dose
imaging, Planmeca Viso introduces
a more efficient imaging workflow,
innovative live video patient positioning and intelligent field-of-view
adjustments.”
According to the company, another

Manage Implant Complications and Esthetic Concerns for Both the Surgeon and the
Restorative Dentist’ on Thursday morning.

feature of Planmeca Viso is Planmeca CALM (Correction Algorithm
for Latent Movement), which analyzes and compensates for slight
movements during a scan to provide
improved diagnostic images and virtually eliminate retakes. Planmeca
Viso’s new imaging arm design also
provides increased patient space and
shorter acquisition times, the company said.
New technology is also available at Designs for Vision (booth
No. 611). The company’s new LED DayLite Micro HDi uses new high-definition imaging in an ultra-lightweight
headlight in combination with the
new Micro power pack. According
to the company, the Micro is the
market’s lightest and smallest power
pack. The complete unit includes two
power packs, and each power pack
can run up to 10 hours.
Designs for Vision also has added
high-definition imaging to the LED
DayLite WireLess Mini HDi, providing a lightweight cordless solution
with light intensity comparable to
many corded headlights. You can
choose high-definition imaging with
either a wired or wireless design to
meet your preference, and either HDi
headlight will illuminate the entire
oral cavity.

High Altitude Symposium
Event to take place
in Vail, Colo., from
Jan. 30 to Feb. 2

n While it is impossible to reduce
the wide range of procedures and
topics in the oral surgery field to a
simple catchphrase, there is value in
the guiding principle of, “Tissue is the
issue, but bone sets the tone.”
From implantology to surgery,
meticulous attention to treatment of
bone is key to a successful procedure. This is why, in 2002, Meisinger
unveiled the Bone Management®
product line, which consists of coordinated systems that enable controlled
optimization of various surgical procedures. Developed in collaboration
with scientists and practitioners,
the clear, methodical procedures for
these systems foster ease of use for
a large range of dental professionals.
The term Bone Management refers
not simply to a technique but rather
to a mindset of surgical guidelines.
While the end goal of prosthetics is
