To do so, he collected names of exodontists from dental supply houses and then wrote them all letters inviting them to a charter meeting on Aug. 6, 1918, at the National Dental Association’s meeting in Chicago. At that gathering, Howard was named chair, and Dr. C.F.B. Stowell was elected secretary, with 29 exodontists signing the charter. The organization was 5 It’s 100 years and counting for AAOMS. Here are some other exhibit hall activities you might want to check out. • New Exhibitor Spotlight. The New Exhibitor Spotlight is an opportunity for first-time exhibitors to shine. Stop by their spotlight displays in the con- vention center and their booths in the exhibit hall. • Professional Headshot Photos, booth No. 1832. Back by popular demand, you can have your professional photograph taken for free. • Service Project, booth No. 624. AAOMS is offering attendees the chance to participate in a service project to assemble hygiene kits for donation to a Chicago-area program that serves under-resourced communities. In less than five minutes, you can assemble a kit and write a note of encouragement to its recipient. • Social Media Bar, booth No. 1029. Become social media savvy at the Social Media Bar. The National Dental Association gave official recognition to the society in 1919. The society later became the American Society of Oral Surgeons and Exodontists, then the American Society of Oral Surgeons before adopting its current name — the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons — in 1978. Today, we are back here in the city where it all began to celebrate 100 years of education and camaraderie, and if you haven’t yet had a chance to look around, you will see there are a lot of special activities taking place during the next few days. A history museum will showcase artifacts related to the specialty — such as surgical mallets and cheek retractors — as well as present a historical timeline of association milestones and videos of interviews with past association presidents. In addition to the approximately 170 educational programs being held at the Hilton Chicago and McCormick Place West, and expounding on such timely topics as the treatment of war injuries, advancements in cancer care and emerging technologies in maxillofacial nerve injuries, there will also be a “100 Years of AAOMS” course that will summarize the specialty’s history and discuss the evolution from exodontists to oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Another new educational program will feature nine tracks based on the OMS scope of practice: anesthesia, cosmetic and orthognathic surgery, dental implants, dentoalveolar, head 3 and neck oncology, pediatrics and cleft, reconstruction, temporomandibular joint and trauma. For each track, speakers will address the latest evidence-based research in a plenary session and then move into focused breakouts. In honor of the centennial, each track also will offer a historical review of the practice area and an oral abstract session. “We will celebrate the rich history of our association and the oral and maxillofacial surgery specialty during our 100th annual meeting,” said AAOMS President Brett L. Ferguson, DDS, FACS, in a press release distributed before the meeting. “Attendees will ... reflect on the past while looking forward to advancements in the specialty.” (Source: The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons) AD[4] => 4 exhibitors AAOMS Annual Meeting — October 11, 2018 Henry Schein strengthens and expands its global dental implant business with three investments By Henry Schein Staff n Henry Schein Inc., one of the world’s largest providers of healthcare products and services to officebased dental, animal health and medical practitioners, has announced three investments that will advance the company’s dental implant business strategy. The company asserts it’s a high-quality device — safe, simple to use with a high degree of precision and flexible application options. The new generation builds on those tried-and-tested features and adds an array of all new benefits: a color touchscreen interface, a wireless foot pedal, shorter/lighter and more powerful motor with LED+ capability and a unique ISQ module for assessing the stability of an implant. W&H Implantmed SI-1015 supports practitioners for both oral surgery and implantology. Improved safety Immediate load … early load … or the conventional route? Deciding on the best time for loading implants is becoming more complex when trying to take into account all of a patient’s risk factors. According to the company, the integrated automatic thread-cutter function and precise torque control actively helps the operator during implant placement — especially in dense bone. Using the documentation function stores all parameters, the implant insertion torque/time graph, optional ISQ measurement data, documentation ID and tooth position on a USB stick for patient records. As an option, the W&H Osstell ISQ (Implant Stability Quotient) module for the Implantmed SI-1015 is a noninvasive measuring system of primary stability/osseointegration. Combining the detailed insertion torque graph with the ISQ measurement reduces risk in deciding optimum loading time and assists in monitoring osseointegration of an implant. Simplicity: New color touchscreen user interface and redesigned pump The new Implantmed SI-1015’s user interface helps the practice team to streamline. A high-tech color touchscreen with a tempered glass surface makes it easy to operate and disinfect, according to the company. The navigation system and the customizable programs allow the operator to focus on the surgery. The new Implantmed SI-1015. (Photo/Provided by W&H) 5 The Implantmed can be customized for up to six individual users for reduced risk in group practices using multiple implant brands and their individual protocols. A redesigned coolant pump means the irrigation tubing can now be loaded faster under sterile conditions. Precise: Powerful motor and new surgical handpieces with LED+ In its class, the new motor is the strongest (6.2 Ncm), lightest and shortest, the company asserts, adding that the ergonomic shape and balance combined with a W&H handpiece can reduce operator physical strain. Five new short surgical handpieces with LED+ fully illuminate, regardless of the motor speed.
