A dental technician day and a postsymposium day were also part of the
event.
Between educational sessions, meeting attendees had plenty of opportunity
to network with one another, to explore
some of New York City’s many sights and
attractions, and to socialize. A symposium party, held Friday night at Pier 60,
overlooking the Hudson River, offered
libations, live music and lots of good
times.
During a lighthearted moment toward
the end of his main program presentation, Dr. Gerard Chiche displayed beforeand-after pictures of a woman he had
treated with dental implants, explaining
that for many patients improved dentition means a better life. Not only did this
woman have much better looking teeth
in the “after” shot, he pointed out, she
also looked better overall.
“When the smile changes, the hair
changes and then the clothing changes,”
Chiche said. “Sometimes even the husband changes.”
Thanks to the scientific knowledge being shared during the symposium, even
patients who decide to change spouses
will have teeth that will last a lifetime.

Foundation for Oral Rehabilitation (FOR)
inaugurated at Nobel symposium
Bertrand Piccard
receives first FOR
Humanity Award
The Foundation for Oral Rehabilitation
(FOR) — an independent, international
initiative that unites professionals from
various disciplines to improve oral health
care and support humanitarian leadership — was inaugurated during the Nobel
Biocare Global Symposium, which took
place June 20–23 in New York City. Bertrand Piccard, a Goodwill Ambassador
for the United Nations, was awarded the
recipient of the foundation’s first FOR Humanity Award.
FOR has been funded by an initial endowment of 1 million Swiss francs provided by Nobel Biocare.
Joining FOR grants exclusive access to
a broad range of benefits created to help
improve patient care in daily clinical practice. FOR connects its participants, allowing them to globally share their expertise
and extend their professional profiles.
Young participants can benefit from the
personal mentorship and support in advancing their careers as emerging leaders
in science, education and humanity.
“FOR provides a multi-dimensional
platform to assist professional colleagues
from diverse specialties and cultural
backgrounds to focus on optimizing treatment outcomes for their patients,” said
George Zarb, chairman of FOR. “Those
who join FOR become part of a community with a shared desire and dedication
to improve the quality of life of patients.”
The mission of the new foundation is to
achieve effective worldwide patient care
through scholarship and humanitarian
engagement. This network is centered on
three key areas: science, education and
humanity. FOR SCIENCE helps participants stay at the forefront of innovation
and scientific breakthroughs by collaborating with leading experts and researchers from various fields. Through special
“FORum” events, experts and participants
will have the opportunity to showcase
their research and share their ideas before
an international audience.
A FOR participant has a chance to
become part of a leading science- and
evidence-based organization at the frontiers of oral rehabilitation. By collaborating with some of the most renowned
practitioners in each field, participants
will have access to treatment guidelines
(beginning in 2014) and checklists to
promote the best possible treatment outcomes for patients.
FOR EDUCATION provides an interactive
learning platform but, even more, aims to
unite a global community of experts to
provide clinical fellowship, mentorship,
and mutual support to improve the quality of life of patients. Young professionals
can interact with mentors and peers for
personal and professional development
and life-long learning. The FOR platform
(www.FOR.org) will provide an interactive

learning environment that gives participants the ability to connect with experts
and peers and keep up-to-date on the latest advancements in patient care.
Patient case histories can be viewed
from leading experts, and learning opportunities about the latest practices
and clinical and technological advances
will also be available. Additionally, participants will have the chance to share and
discuss patient treatment plans with a
community of experts and peers. The FOR
platform also gives access to professional

viewpoints on important topics while offering the opportunity to display a participant’s ideas before a global audience.
FOR HUMANITY recognizes humanitarian achievement and initiatives. Piccard
was awarded the foundation’s first FOR
Humanity Award in recognition of his
efforts, such as his “Winds of Hope” humanitarian foundation. Shared humanitarian values and engagement are integral
to FOR’s culture because they ensure support for humanitarian projects and provision of free products for treating patients

in need. FOR recognizes outstanding individuals who advance the cause of human
welfare.
FOR welcomes active participation from
all disciplines and specialties in the field
of oral rehabilitation. By promoting oral
health care and humanitarian endeavors, the foundation seeks to provide ondemand opportunities for learning, sharing and mentoring for better patient care.

Nobel Biocare announces
new digital workflow

uring its Global Symposium
in New York, Nobel Biocare unveiled a new, fully integrated
digital workflow and a new regenerative product. The announcements
were made June 21 by Richard Laube, CEO
of Nobel Biocare, and Hans Geiselhöringer, executive vice president, global research, products & development, during
a press conference.
With a strong focus on patient safety
and treatment efficiency for dental professionals and their patients, Nobel Biocare is developing a seamless workflow

from patient diagnostics and treatment
planning to surgery and later also prosthetics — all digitally connected through
Nobel Biocare’s secure online network,
NobelConnect.
The next linked steps, previewed during the symposium, continue to strongly
build on the individual strengths and
expertise within the treating teams, connecting NobelProcera lab technicians
and NobelClinician users digitally together.
Starting with diagnostics and treatment planning in the NobelClinician

Software, the surface model obtained
from the second-generation NobelProcera 2G Scanner can now be added to
the scene at any stage of the treatment
through a fully automated and precise
smart fusion technology.
This enables even better representation
of intraoral tissues for diagnostics and
planning, according to Nobel Biocare.
Furthermore, it reduces procedural treatment costs and shortens timelines by allowing CBCT scans to be taken at the first
patient visit, offering clinicians a truly
flexible way of working.
Radiographic guides, specific markers
and scan protocols are no longer needed. The decision for guided surgery can
be taken at any stage. Fully automated,
precision-fitting surgical templates are
automatically generated at the click of a
button using the integrated surface scan
and planned implant positions.
Next to the traditional fully guided
approach, NobelGuide will now also offer options for guided pilot drilling. The
decision for the position, orientation and
depth of the first drill during the implant
site preparation is one of the most crucial steps for a clinician.
The NobelGuide pilot drill template
helps to solve this challenge and yet enables clinicians to finish the surgery using their existing free hand techniques.
All surgical templates can be visualized
immediately in the NobelClinician Software, ordered completely online and are
delivered ready to use.
The iPad-operated drilling unit, OsseoCare Pro, truly sets a smarter standard in
safety and efficiency and is seamlessly
linked to NobelConnect, according to Nobel Biocare. This allows the secure transfer of digital plans from NobelClinician
directly into the intelligent device for
free hand surgeries or guided surgery options — all immediately and neatly documented into automated clinical reports.
After the surgery, patient-specific data
is exported back to NobelClinician and
stored in the fully-encrypted NobelClinician file for later reference.
Running on both Windows PCs and
Mac OS X, NobelClinician is continuously expanding its user base. With the
recently introduced Volume Rendering
technique, a patient’s anatomy can be
easily evaluated before surgery.
The NobelClinician Communicator
iPad App allows for reviewing NobelClinician plans together with the patient to
better understand the proposed treatment. The app, available in the Apple
App Store, focuses on increasing treatment acceptance and securely links
through NobelConnect to any iPad.
A predictable restorative outcome
is assured through the custom design
of individualized prosthetics in the
NobelProcera Software, according to the
company. The software is directly linked
into the global network of NobelProcera
production facilities for the manufacturing and delivery of functional and
natural-looking dental restorations designed to last a lifetime.
