‘Day on
the Hill’
By Sierra Rendon, Managing Editor

Do you ever wish you could be more involved with the
choices and decisions the U.S. government makes regarding health and dental care?
That’s what the “Day on the Hill” is all about.
The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons will host its 12th annual “Day on the Hill” on March
28. The event is held to help and encourage clinicians to
participate in the political process and create relationships
and connections with federal legislators.
The day before the “Day on the Hill,” attendees will meet
at the Mayflower Renaissance Hotel in Washington, D.C.,
for tips on Hill meetings and remarks about the issues by
AAOMS’s federal representatives. A cocktail reception and a
dinner featuring keynote speaker, Tucker Carlson, will also
take place that day.
The “Day on the Hill” will begin at 7 a.m. with a breakfast
meeting and morning program.

Study: Bone-regenerating protein
could improve implant success
By Dental Tribune America

Medicine. Photo/Provided by Georgia Health Sciences University

Using a bone-inducing protein to augment the maxillary sinus could improve
dental implant success in cases where
bone loss presents a challenge, according to Georgia Health Sciences University researchers. With bone thinning a
common cause and/or consequence of
tooth loss, researches are keen on finding
better ways to build up bone that is too
thin to support the anchoring of dental
implants.
The current favored solution is to
supplement the area with bone grafts
to stabilize the implant base. But that
technique can be problematic “primar-

ily because it involves additional surgeries to harvest the bone,” said Dr. Ulf
M. E. Wikesjö, interim associate dean for
research and enterprise in the GHSU College of Dental Medicine.
In animal studies, he and his team at
the GHSU Laboratory for Applied Periodontal & Craniofacial Regeneration
found that by implanting bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) in the sinus, more
new bone forms in four weeks than does
when using conventional bone grafting
at the same site.
“We found that BMP induced superior bone quality following bone grafts,

ITI welcomes submissions for 2012
André Schroeder Research Prize
Annual $20,000 award
for the advancement
of dental research
and development
The International Team for Implantology (ITI), a leading academic organization
dedicated to the promotion of evidencebased education and research in the field
of implant dentistry, is inviting submissions for the highly regarded André
Schroeder Research Prize as of February.
The André Schroeder Research Prize,
which carries a cash endowment of
$20,000 (CHF), is one of the most prestigious awards in implant dentistry today.
It is awarded to independent researchers
for their contribution to the advancement of research and development in implant dentistry.
In this way, the ITI promotes and supports the dissemination of new scientific
findings in implant dentistry, oral tissue
regeneration and related fields. The annual award is adjudicated by the ITI Re-

which improves the chances for successful implants,” Wikesjö said. “BMP is phenomenal because it’s a true, off-the-shelf
product with ease of use that can produce
real results, and it could be the new gold
standard for this procedure.”
According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons,
69 percent of adults ages 35-44 have lost
at least one tooth due to decay, disease
or trauma, and 26 percent of adults have
lost all permanent teeth by age 74. Before
dental implants were available, the only
options for replacing these missing teeth
were dentures and dental bridges, both of
which could lead to further bone loss. Implants provide patients with numerous
benefits, including improved oral health,
appearance, speech, convenience, durability and ability to eat.
The findings of the Wikesjö team’s pilot study were presented at the Academy
of Osseointegration annual meeting in
Washington, D.C. Wikesjö’s GHSU co-investigators include Drs. Jaebum Lee, Cristiano Susin, Nancy Rodriguez and Jamie
de Stefano.
According to the Ontario Ministry
of Health, by 2004 two BMP products
had already received Health Canada approval. One approved use is to aid in the
treatment of long bone fractures. Anoth-

international specialists in implant dentistry and related fields. In 2012, it will
be presented at the ITI Congress Canada,
which will take place Sept. 21-22 in Toronto.
The award was established 20 years
ago and is dedicated to the late Professor André Schroeder (1918-2004), founding ITI president, who pioneered implant
dentistry and whose lifework contributed
significantly to the course of modern implant dentistry.
Last year’s winner was Dr. Nikola Saulacic from the University of Bern, Switzerland, for his experimental study on
“Bone apposition to a titanium-zirconium alloy implant surface.”
Researchers who can demonstrate new
findings in implant dentistry and related
fields are invited to apply for the 2012 André Schroeder Research Prize. The application form can be downloaded from the
ITI website. The deadline for manuscript
submission is April 15.

er type of BMP was approved for use in
spinal fusion procedures in patients with
degenerative disc disease, eliminating
the traditional need for bone grafts from
the pelvis.
BMPs were discovered by UCLA orthopedic surgeon Marshall Urist. A 2001
obituary for Urist in the Los Angeles
Times said: “Urist was probably best
known for his discovery in 1965 of bone
morphogenetic protein, or BMP, a genetically produced substance that helps bone
to regenerate by inducing certain types
of connective tissues and other unspecialized cells to become bone cells. In
more than 20 years of experimentation,
Urist proved that BMP could be used to
build living bone tissue around surgical
pins and screws used to repair broken
hips, shoulders and other bones.”
According to Frost and Sullivan, a
50-year-old global market research and
consulting firm, a BMP market began to
open up in 2001 with U.S. FDA approval
of a BMP product for clinical use.
Since then, the market has steadily
grown and other BMP products have

a repeal on the restrictions on flexible
spending accounts.

About the ITI
The International Team for Implantology (ITI) unites professionals around the
world from every field of implant dentistry and related tissue regeneration. As
an independent academic association,
it actively promotes networking and exchange among its membership. ITI fellows
and members, who now number more
than 10,000, regularly share their knowledge and expertise from research and
clinical practice at meetings, courses and
congresses with the objective of continuously improving treatment methods and
outcomes to the benefit of their patients.
In more than 30 years, the ITI has built
a reputation for scientific rigor combined
with concern for the welfare of patients.
The organization focuses on the development of well-documented treatment
guidelines backed by extensive clinical
testing and the compilation of long-term
results. The ITI funds research as well as
scholarships for young clinicians, organizes congresses and continuing education
events and also publishes reference books.

been approved by the FDA, Health Canada and regulatory agencies in a number
of other countries. Prices for treatment
remain relatively high, though, especially when compared with the costs of
traditional bone grafting. Frost and Sullivan report that regulatory, insurance and
patent challenges also have kept growth
of the BMP market in check — along
with continued research into potential
risks associated with use of BMPs in high
concentration.
Focused primarily on spinal fusion surgeries, a September 2008 research report
on the BMP market by Frost and Sullivan
states: “The primary advantage of bone
growth factors compared with allograft
bone tissue is that they do not depend on
the availability of donated human tissue.
In addition, owing to the potential risk of
disease transmission, synthetic materials and growth factors may be perceived
as safer than allograft-based bone tissue.
Many new composite products are also
becoming available, which seek to harness the combined characteristics of synthetic and natural materials in one single
product optimized for rapid bone repair
and regeneration.”

Gear up for
charitable
bike event

MIS Implants Technologies, based in
Fair Lawn, N.J., will be holding its second
Bike Event on July 29.

This year, participants will be riding for Ninos de la Luz (Children of the
Light), an organization that funds an
orphanage for the “lost boys” of the
Dominican Republic. This organization
shelters boys who have been living on
the streets, often abandoned by their
families, giving them a place to live,
schooling and life skills to eventually
live on their own and be a solid member
of society.
This year’s bike ride will be 40 miles in
length and go through part of the lower
Hudson Valley —starting in Park Ridge,
N.J., and ending in Piermont, N.Y. A light
breakfast will be served prior to the
ride as well as replenishing snacks after. There will be one planned rest stop
along the route.
Motti Weisman, CEO of MIS Implants
Technologies, visited the orphanage. He
was touched and impressed by the commitment of the people running this facility and immediately wanted to help
in a substantial way. He was able to meet
and dine with some of the boys and was
intrigued by their stories.
“The work being done here is remarkable, and I have committed to provide
the funding for a media center to help
with the boys’ computer skills and ultimately make them current with today’s
workplace,” Weisman said. “The boys
are able to stay at the facility, known as
‘The Ranch,’ until they are 18. The success stories from this group are truly
heartwarming, and I foresee having a
long-term relationship with this organization to continue to help.”
There is no government funding available for social needs such as this. Private
funding is crucial to give these boys an
environment where they can turn their
lives around and thrive.
Registration is now open for the 2012
MIS Charitable Bike Ride. For more information, visit www.miscyclingteam.
com or call (201) 710-6217. There are different registration packages available.
All proceeds from this event will be directly donated to impact international
health and earmarked for Ninos de la
Luz. Registration fees are tax deductible.

Success of Atlantis from
Astra Tech continues in 2012
Atlantis Abutment core file.

Atlantis lab-based scanning.

AD

Available for all major implants systems,
Atlantis™ remains a market-leading CAD/
CAM abutment solution in North America,
with steadily increasing numbers of dental laboratories and dentists choosing Atlantis abutments for their patient-specific,
dental implant restorative needs, the company said..
“The continued growth of Atlantis is, in
part, due to our commitment to listening
and responding to the feedback and needs
of our customers,” says Craig Rodriguez,
vice president of marketing, Astra Tech Inc.
(North America). “We go through a rigorous development process that ensures in-

novation without compromise to reliability and predictable results. These solutions
all positively contribute to our customers’
process efficiency and profitability.”
Atlantis lab-based scanning and Atlantis
Abutment core file are examples of services that leverage technology for a more
efficient workflow. A steady stream of new
product and service options will be introduced throughout 2012, further reinforcing Astra Tech Dental’s position within the
area of digital dentistry.

Atlantis scanning for 3Shape
First announced in 2011, Astra Tech’s stra-

tegic alliance with 3Shape A/S, the Danishbased provider of 3-D scanners and CAD/
CAM software solutions, continues with
the development of Atlantis lab-based
scanning for 3Shape scanners. Atlantis
lab-based scanning allows for the dental
models to be kept at the laboratory and
provides advantages for the dental laboratory such as reduced time to delivery and
reduced cost in handling and transportation.
The software interface enabling the
3Shape dental scanners to communicate
with the Atlantis VAD™ (Virtual Abutment Design) software is now in the premarket test phase.
One of the first participants of the premarket testing is Chris May, owner of
May Dental Arts (Fenton, Mo.).
“The overall experience using the
3Shape scanner to send files to Astra
Tech for the production of Atlantis abutments has been great,” May said. “This
digital workflow has helped my laboratory to shave off almost two days of our
production time. And because our laboratory often restores cases with multiple disciplines (veneers/crowns and
implant combinations), lab-based scanning allows us the flexibility to continue
working on these cases while the abutments are being milled.
“Not having to physically send out our
case models makes the overall process
feel even more integrated. In fact, it feels
as if Atlantis production is located right
in our own laboratory,” he added.

Atlantis Abutment Core File
Astra Tech will offer Atlantis Abutment
Core File to users of the design software
3Shape DentalDesigner. Atlantis Abutment Core File is a high-precision digital
file of an Atlantis abutment that represents the outer surface of the manufactured Atlantis abutment and includes all
corresponding scanned data. The Atlantis Abutment Core File can be used for
designing a coping in the 3Shape Dental
Designer software before receipt of the
final abutment, thus replacing the need
to scan the abutment. The service contributes to a shorter turnaround time
for the production of the final restoration.
Atlantis and Atlantis VAD are trademarks of Astra Tech. All other trademarks are the property of their respective owners.

Atlantis patient-specific abutments
Atlantis patient-specific abutments are
designed and fabricated using Atlantis
VAD (Virtual Abutment Design) software, a patented process that combines
state-of-the-art 3-D optical scanning,
advanced software and manufacturing
methods to deliver patient-specific abutments that eliminates the need for hand
modification.
Atlantis patient-specific abutments
are available for all major implant systems and in biocompatible materials
such as titanium, gold-shaded titanium
and different shades of zirconia, including a translucent zirconia in white for
the Atlantis Crown Abutment.

CEREC Intraoral Scanner to create intraoral impressions for custom abutments.
The combined use of these technologies

will provide the clinician with simplified
esthetic restoration solutions.
Utilizing these combined technologies, clinicians will now be able to take a
digital impression of a healing abutment
with the use of an intraoral device that
will scan embedded codes on the occlusal
surface of the abutment, the surrounding soft tissue and adjacent dentition.
These codes provide the necessary information to design and mill the definitive abutment. The process is handled
supragingivally by utilizing the BellaTek
Encode Impression System, so that no
removal of the healing abutment is required to create the scan.
Greater patient satisfaction may also
occur as intraoral scanning eliminates
the need for impression-taking material;
some patients find this is a more comfortable experience. Patients should also
recognize a time savings as the process is
shorter than the typical procedure.
“We are pleased to offer the latest digital solutions, which will lead to esthetic
outcomes for patients,” said Maggie Anderson, president of BIOMET 3i. “This
new step forward in impression making
offers a win-win experience for clinicians, laboratories and patients.”
“We are excited about collaborating
with BIOMET 3i,” said Roddy MacLeod,
Sirona, vice president, CAD/CAM. “It
provides dentists with the opportunity
to take an innovative step in digitizing
implant treatment by using the BellaTek
Encode Impression System with CEREC
Connect.”

Zimmer Dental launches ‘revolutionary’
Trabecular Metal Dental Implant

Zimmer Dental Inc., a leading provider
of dental oral rehabilitation products and
a subsidiary of Zimmer Holdings, Inc., announces the availability of the Zimmer®
Trabecular Metal™ Dental Implant in the
United States and select global markets.
The Trabecular Metal Dental Implant
adds dimension to implant dentistry and
is “The Best Thing Next to Bone®,” the
company says.
The Trabecular Metal Dental Implant
features an osteoconductive mid-section
that is structurally and biomechanically
similar to cancellous bone. Portions of

the implant also utilize Zimmer Dental’s
MTX® microtextured surface, which has
been documented to achieve high levels
of bone-to-implant contact, or ongrowth,
the company says.
Human studies of the Trabecular Metal
Dental Implant began in 2010. In a study
of Trabecular Metal Dental Implants in
canine mandibular models, evidence of
ingrowth by maturing bone was documented as early as two weeks after implantation. Further data is being collected to document clinical results in human
dental applications.
Manufactured at Zimmer’s TMT facility in Parsippany, N.J., and used in Zimmer’s cutting-edge orthopaedic devices
for more than a decade, Trabecular Metal
Material is a three-dimensional, highly
biocompatible material — not an implant surface or coating — with up to
80 percent porosity and a structure and
function comparable to cancellous bone.
Made from tantalum, element No. 73 in
the periodic table, Trabecular Metal material is fabricated utilizing a proprietary
vapor deposition process.
Combining the popular features of the
Tapered Screw-Vent® Implant (including
Platform Plus™ Technology and crestal
options) with the unique properties of
Trabecular Metal Material, the Trabecular Metal Dental Implant is compatible
with the Tapered Screw-Vent Surgical Kit
and prosthetics for easy incorporation
into treatment plans.
For decades, Zimmer Dental has gained
the trust of thousands of clinicians
worldwide who count on its comprehensive line of products to deliver successful
patient outcomes. By looking to new and
innovative technologies and leveraging
its relationship with its parent company,
Zimmer Holdings, Zimmer Dental continues to reinforce its commitment to
offering state-of-the-art dental solutions
to clinicians.
