Photos/Humberto Estrada, Dental Tribune March 2011 Four days of intense learning and training with Dr. Sascha Jovanovic Online dental institute, Global Institute for Dental Education (gIDE), hosts four hands-on workshops per year at its training facility in Los Angeles. Topics covered include soft-tissue management and grafting around dental implants; bone, ridge and socket grafting; and sinus elevation and grafting. This advanced implant and grafting workshop is a four-day handson clinical course developed by Dr. Sascha A. Jovanovic, a periodontist from Los Angeles and pioneer in implant dentistry, bone regeneration and esthetic procedures. Jovanovic is also the course director at UCLA CE, past president of the EAO, author of more than 60 scientific publications and one textbook, and is the editor in chief of Implant Tribune. The next workshop is planned for June 15–18. Clinicians can benefit from taking one, two or all four days at gIDE’s Training Center. Day 1 is composed of an interactive lecture in the morning addressing flap design and management, suturing methods, soft-tissue autografts and allografts, abutment design modifications, perio-implant papilla support and more. During the second half of the day, participants will practice on fresh porcine maxilla models with the latest implant designs, microsurgical hand instruments, filler materials, resorbable and non-resorbable sutures and dermal allograft. The second part of the course consists of a two-day workshop covering the latest techniques for successful bone grafting in implant placement, esthetic implant procedures and socket grafting. Two live surgery cases will be demonstrated: a posterior case for ridge and sinus augmentation purposes, and an anterior esthetic case exhibiting optimal implant placement and site development. Participants will pracg IT page 7B Recognizing implant dentistry’s global reach, the Academy of Osseointegration debuted an International Symposium to highlight clinical research, technology and treatment advances that may be unfamiliar to U.S.-based practitioners during the AO’s 2011 Annual Meeting, which took place March 3–5, in Washington, D.C. AAIP, Jamaican Ministry of Health offer implant education course in Montego Bay The College of Health Sciences and the School of Oral Health Science, University of Technology, Jamaica, in conjunction with the American Academy of Implant Prosthodontics and the Ministry of Health, Jamaica, presented a hands-on dental implant conference and continuing education program called “Implants in Paradise,” in Montego Bay, from Jan. 16–21. Held at Cornwall Regional Hospital, the course was the third cooperative effort of the Jamaican Ministry of Health and the American Academy of Implant Prosthodontics. The six-day course was the fulfillment of a vision to establish a training program in oral implantol- ogy in Montego Bay, with the pristine Jamaican white sand beaches providing the recreational backdrop. Drs. Leonard I. Linkow and Sheldon Winkler presented a series of lectures, and clinical treatment was performed under the supervision of Dr. Mike Shulman. The conference began on Jan. 16 with an induction ceremony where Linkow and Winkler were conferred as adjunct professors, and Shulman was named an adjunct associate professor in the School of Oral Health Sciences, University of Technology, Jamaica. Winkler has authored or co-authored six textbooks (including “Essentials of Complete Denture Prosthodontics”), approximately 185 articles and chapters in professional journals and textbooks and founded the journal Implant Dentistry, which he edited for six years. Winkler is currently senior editor of the Journal of Oral Implantology. Founded by Dr. Maurice J. Fagan, Jr., in 1982 at the School of Dentistry, Medical College of Georgia, the objective of the American Academy of Implant Prosthodontics is to support and foster the practice of implant prosthodontics as an integral component of dentistry. The academy supports component and affiliate implant associations around the world, including organizations in Egypt, France, Jamaica, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Israel, Italy, Paraguay, Peru, Spain, South Korea and Thailand. The academy has published two textbooks, “The Dental Implant” in 1985 and “Implant Prosthodontics” in 1990. The Journal of Oral Implantology is the official publication of the academy. The academy also publishes a newsletter. The academy holds an annual convention, international meetings in cooperation with its affiliate and component societies, offers continuing education courses and sponsors a network of study clubs in the United States. The American Academy of Implant Prosthodontics is designated an Approved PACE Program Provider by the Academy of General Dentistry. For its latest lecture on demand, “Oral Plastic Surgery,” gIDE worked with an expert in restorative dentistry, Dr. Nelson Carranza. In many cases, especially in implant dentistry, the challenge still present today relies on soft-tissue management. Periodontal surgery is evolving to meet these chal- lenges into a new concept termed “oral plastic surgery.” Carranza filmed two versions of this lecture, in English and in Spanish. Dr. Sam Strong, who has previously recorded nine lectures for gIDE, most recently contributed “Treating the Edentulous Arch with Removable Implant Overdentures.” This presentation is the second of four modules related to treating the fully edentulous patient with removable overdentures. It focuses on the use of a jaw relation recording device (or tracing device), which gives the clinician new accuracy in procuring centric relation. “The Emergency Implant Immediate Extraction Replacement” is the newest lecture from Dr. Jack Hahn, a well-recognized pioneer in the field of implant dentistry. Immediate extraction replacement is an option applied when patients present themselves with an un-restorable tooth, especially in the esthetic zone where they want something that will allow them to engage in social situations without a missing tooth. gIDE has published more than 200 lectures online, while constantly adding new and innovative content. Access to these lectures is available through DVD purchase, but gIDE’s lecture library is most conveniently utilized via the online membership. Yearly subscription to this compre- hensive library provides instant access to scientific knowledge in the fastest growing segments in dentistry. gIDE is ADA certified and offers a growing number of up to 200 continuing education credits. Founded in 2003 by worldrenowned implant dentist, Dr. Sascha A. Jovanovic, and colleagues, gIDE is a private dental institute blending online digital education with hands-on learning, dedicated to the advancement of clinicians and the healthcare of their patients worldwide. This uniquely shaped implant eliminates the common compromise between marginal bone levels and esthetics in sloped alveolar ridge situations. The implant design meets a clinical need: it facilitates implant placement when there is a sloped ridge and optimizes implant position to maintain marginal bone support and esthetics. “The sloped design lets the implant adapt to the anatomy rather than letting the anatomy adapt to the implant design; this works particularly well for placement in the esthetic zone,” says Professor Dr. Wilfried Wagner, of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Department for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Germany. As with all Astra Tech dental implants, OsseoSpeed TX Profile has all the key features of the well-documented Astra Tech BioManagement Complex™, unique to the Astra Tech Implant System.™ Due to the sloped neck of this dental implant, Astra Tech recommends that dental professionals who use this product have extensive implant treatment knowledge.
