Dugoni Faculty Award. CDA established the award in 2004 in recognition of Dugoni’s accomplishments in dental education and organized dentistry. The award acknowledges and supports eligible faculty affiliated with the state’s six dental schools for their exceptional leadership, innovation, collaboration, compassion, philanthropic spirit and integrity in dental education. It was developed to support individuals who contribute to the scholarly and creative activities of California dental students. After graduating with his DDS from the University of the Pacific in 1975, Levy went on to receive a master’s degree in oral biology and an endodontic certificate in 1978. He currently devotes his time to his career as an associate professor and endodontic clinical director at Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry at USC. Levy was selected for the award in part because of his ability to demon- Dr. Thomas Levy (Photo/CDA Foundation) strate leadership, creativity and innovation — providing students with hands-on experience in low socio-economic areas to teach the importance of leadership in health care in their communities. Levy is also responsible for developing the research on platelet-derived growth factor role in osseous repair in Central America in collaboration with an El Salvadorian dental school. In an effort to increase students’ surgical experiences and provide reciprocal education, Levy has organized 15 trips to Central America, believing it is vital for residents to learn how to give back to a unique group of citizens. Levy presented at the 2012 American Association of Endodontists (AAE) meeting on the topic of how today’s students learn and how the millennial student will apply their education to their future practice in dentistry. “The millennial student fascinates me, and understanding their traits is a constant study,” Levy said. By establishing a program to provide endodontic care at the Children’s Dental Center and the Union Rescue Mission in downtown Los Angeles, Levy has collaborated with community-based organizations to provide the highest level of endodontic care available for those patients. Levy has also provided multiple continuing education courses with Central American Universities and raised more than $700,000 in grants for the USC Endodontic Program. Levy’s philanthropic efforts were also considered for the award as he regularly gives his time and materials to help homeless veterans as part of the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Stand Downs, which provide services to homeless veterans. Levy is vice president of Omega Kappa Upsilon, providing scholarships to outstanding dental students. In addition, Levy donates to USC’s Give Back to the Community Education Fund and the American College of Endodontics’ Endowment Fund to support research. “As a teacher, it is extremely important that my students are competent, compassionate and confident,” Levy said. “The best way to teach is by being a good role model, and I work every day to teach from my heart as well as my brain.” (Source: CDA Foundation) Industry News Stropko Irrigator removes debris, making many procedures easier By John J. Stropko, DDS The innovative Stropko Irrigator has essential uses in any discipline of dentistry, to make restorative, endodontic, periodontal, surgical, micro-adhesive dentistry, orthodontic and implant procedures easier by constantly maintaining a clean field with uninterrupted vision. The Stropko Irrigator (Fig. 1) has numerous Fig. 1: The Stropko Irrigator a d v a n t a g e s Photos/Provided by Dr. John J. over the standard dental tips. (Photo/The Ritz-Carlton) 3–D endo symposium to be held in California T he 3D Endo Symposium will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel, located in Dana Point, Calif. Six units of AGD/PACE credits will be awarded. The primary goal of this course is to teach guidelines for CBCT usage in endodontics, advanced interpretation, appearances of common pathology, software manipulation techniques, artifact reduction and patient dose. The morning program will include lectures from Dr. L. Stephen Buchanan, diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics and an assistant clinical professor at the post-graduate endodontic programs at USC and UCLA, and Dr. Bruno Azevedo, an oral maxillofacial radiologist and assistant professor at Western University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine. The afternoon session will include case presentations from a panel of endodontists who are currently utilizing CBCT in their practices. The user panel will include Dr. Thomas McClammy of North Scotts- dale Endodontics & Implantology and Dr. Roger Warren of Cottonwood Endodontics. Following the case presentations, the panel members will host an open discussion with attendees. Throughout the day, there will also be opportunities for handson software training. This course is sponsored by J. Morita USA and Kisco. The cost is $295 per dentist. More information is available at www.morita.com/endo. (Source: J. Using the Stropko Irrigator, cleaning and drying can be done with more precision and control, eliminating all unintentional splashing or contamination of the working area. With standard syringe tips, it is not possible to prevent the dentinal dust from obstructing the vision. A good example of vision control can be observed while troughing in search of hidden canals as demonstrated in Figures 2 and 3. Figure 2 shows how vision is obstructed by the debris created during instrumentation. In Figure 3, note the vast improvement of vision when the Stropko Irrigator is used. The debris is eliminated as it is created, thus permitting continuous clear vision. The outcome of any dental procedure is achieved easier, faster, with more predictability and less stress. Needless to say, the advantages of using the Stropko Irrigator are especially appreciated when using a surgical operating microscope during any dental procedure. The Stropko Irrigator is available in two lengths: the 2.5-inch original length (SIOL) and the 4-inch extra long (SI-XL). The Stropko Irrigator allows the operator or the assistant to remain ergonomically comfortable and stay clear of the working site. Using the supplied adapters, the Stropko Irrigator easily replaces the older three-way syringe tips. No adapters are needed for the newer “quick-connect” three-way syringes. The Stropko Irrigator is manufactured in the United States using the strictest of quality control measures, and has the coveted C.E. mark. It has been imitated but never duplicated and can be purchased at most dental suppliers, or visit www. stropkoirrigator.com for more information. Wykle and Nordiska Dental offer Calasept Endo line Wykle Research has teamed up with Nordiska Dental to provide the Calasept Endo line in the United States. Current products include Calasept Plus – 41 percent calcium hydroxide paste for temporary filling of root canals, Calasept EDTA – 17 percent EDTA solution for chelation of root canals, and Calasept CHX – 2 percent chlorhexidine for the final rinse of the root canal prior to filling the canal. All of the products in the Calasept Endo line are subject to a strict manufacturing process. The result is a consistent, reliable product line that you have come to expect from Wykle and Nordiska Dental. Calasept EDTA is specially formulated to aid in the negotiation of root canals by endodontic instruments. The EDTA forms a water-soluble chelate complex that decalcifies substances and dissolves smear layers, thereby increasing the adhesion of filling material. EDTA helps to enlarge and shape the canal for final obturation. For maximum effect, flush intermittently with EDTA and sodium hypochlorite. Rinse the root canal thoroughly after use of EDTA. Calasept CHX is recommended for final rinsing. Calasept EDTA is sold in 100 ml bottles with Luer top adaptor for easy filling of syringe and less waste. During endodontic treatment, EDTA Managing Editor Robert Selleck, r.selleck@dental-tribune.com Calasept Plus Photo/Wykle Research and sodium hypoclorite are used intermittently. In vitro studies have established that the chelating effect of EDTA is not limited by using sodium hypochlorite. Therefore irrigation with Calasept CHX solution prior to filling a canal with resin material is recommended. In addition, the bactericidal capacity of Calasept CHX will reduce the number of bacteria. Calasept CHX is sold in 100 ml bottles with Luer top adaptor for easy filling of syringe and less waste. Calasept Plus Calcium Hydroxide paste has a very high content of calcium hydroxide (more than 41 percent) giving a high concentration of hydroxyl ions. These generate the high pH value of 12.4, which has a pronounced bactericidal effect. A high concentration of calcium hydroxide means the product is long lasting, because the paste can release calcium ions for a long time. Calasept Plus is a ready-to-use paste in air-tight syringes for direct application through the Flexi-tip. Five Flexi-tips per syringe are provided. Calasept Plus is available as one syringe and five flexitips (1U), or four syringes with 20 flexitips (4U). Cap off the syringe to prevent air from coming into contact with the paste so you can service up to five patients per syringe. All Calasept products are available through dealers. Look for more Calasept Endo products in the near future. (Source: Wykle Research) Dental Tribune American cannot assume responsibility for the validity of product claims or for typographical errors.
