Endodontists tap educational and
product offerings at N.Y. meeting
By Fred Michmershuizen, Managing Editor

W

hen it comes to learning
about the newest procedures and the most innovative products in dentistry, there was no better place to be in
late November than at the 2012 edition
of the Greater New York Dental Meeting (GNYDM). The meeting, now in its
88th year, attracted dental professionals
from across the country and around the
world. A wide range of offerings were of
particular note to endodontists.
The meeting, known as the largest dental exhibition in the United States, also
featured products and services from
hundreds of exhibiting companies, plus
a plethora of educational opportunities.

AAE leaders contribute to ADPAC
The Board of Directors of the American Association of Endodontists (AAE)
donated to the American Dental Political
Action Committee for the fifth year in a
row during the American Dental Association’s Annual Session in San Francisco. All 22 members made a donation of
$200 or more, making them Capital Club
members of ADPAC.
ADPAC uses its financial contributions
to help elect congressional candidates,
regardless of party affiliation, who understand the importance of dentistry
and oral health. Currently, there are two
members of Congress who are dentists.
The group also provides educational
opportunities for dentists interested in
running for public office to help increase
the dental voice in Congress.
“We heartily thank the AAE board
members for their sizable donation to
ADPAC, which they make every year,”
said ADPAC co-chairman Dr. Gordon R.
Isbell. “It is gratifying to see how committed they are to their specialty and the
wider dental profession.”
Along with financial contributions,
Dr. Ali Behnia, an AAE member, sits on
the ADPAC board to represent the AAE
and endodontics while helping to decide
how to best push legislation in Washington. The AAE and its board of directors
hope to act as role models by supporting
ADPAC and encouraging all AAE members to follow suit. An article in The Wall
Street Journal noted that in 2008, “dentists (through ADPAC) boasted the larg-

est single health care PAC,” and during
the 2010 elections, ADPAC gave $13 million to state and local candidates.
“In order for our members to stay
abreast of what is going on in Washington, we encourage them to sign up
for the ADA’s Grassroots Action E-List,

which notifies participants when they
should contact their representatives in
Washington about dental issues,” said Dr.
James C. Kulild, AAE president. “It is critical for dentists everywhere to fight for
our specialty.”
Individuals can join the Action E-List

by visiting the ADA website. Once registered, participants will receive alerts requesting communication with members
of Congress as dental and oral health issues arise.

The Live Dentistry Arena, which had
425 seats and two big screens so that every seat in the house was a good one, was
standing-room-only through much of
the meeting. Right next door to the Live
Dentistry Arena was the Dental Tribune
Study Club C.E. Symposia. The lineup
featured lectures on a range of topics, including endodontics.
Dr. Selma Camargo presented “Optimizing Endodontic Treatment with High
Intensity Laser Therapy.” She discussed
how to identify endodontic disease,
treatment possibilities and understand
their limitations. Furthermore, attendees could hear how scientific and clinical points of view establish laser therapy
indications for endodontics. Attendees

On the exhibit hall floor, NSK offered
the Ti-Max Z, a durable premium handpiece that is claimed to have the smallest

an exceptionally low noise level and virtually no vibration.
Coltene Endo showcased its HyFlex CM
NiTi files with Controlled Memory, which
the company says are up to 300 percent
more resistant to cyclical fatigue compared to other NiTi files, which substantially helps reducing the incidence of file
separation. According to Coltene Endo,
HyFlex CM NiTi files have been manufactured utilizing a unique process that

For those who prefer not to use rotary

handpiece and its SafeSiders, designed
to eliminate the fear of fracture associated with crown-down systems and the
typical shortcomings of the step-back

2013 meeting
in Hawaii
Each year, the American Association of
Endodontists (AAE) hosts the largest endodontic meeting in the world, with more
than 3,500 attendees and more than 100
vendors.
The 2013 AAE Annual Session will be
held April 17 to 20 at the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu. In addition to
offering attendees plenty of time to enjoy the tropical setting, the meeting will
offer the following:
• A full meeting program with up to
22.5 hours of C.E. credit.
• A Master Clinician Series and handson workshops.
• Exhibits from Wednesday through
Friday, including an exhibit hall breakfast.
• “Mega-Session Wednesday,” providing
an introduction to educational tracks.
• Pre- and post-meeting hotel discounts in Hawaii.
More information about the meeting
will be available in future issues of Endo
Tribune, as well as on the AAE’s website,
www.aae.org.
