Henry Schein acquires a minority ownership
in The Dental Warehouse
Chris Jenkins

On the 21st of October 2013 Louis
Ichikowitz, co-founder of The Dental
Warehouse, announced that the world’s
largest provider of health-care products,
Henry Schein, had acquired a minority
ownership of the company.
In addition, the Litha Healthcare Group
which is listed on the Johannesburg Stock
Exchange has also acquired a minority
interest in The Dental Warehouse as part of
a strategic partnership with Henry Schein.

Due diligence
Henry Schein and the Dental Warehouse

began a good and successful business
relationship prior to Henry Schein going
public, with discussions to start working
together. “There reaches a stage where you
have got to move on and things have got to
move on.” Said Louis Ichikowitz. However,
with Henry Schein going public, these
discussions were placed on hold restarting
about two and a half years ago to partner up.
With Henry Schein being a Fortune 500
company the process for a partnership
would be a lengthy and slow process, yet,
Louis and Bernice Ichikowitz of The Dental
Warehouse were prepared to exercise
patience in order to take the next step in

Innovative Solutions for
Dental Restoratives

growing their business.
After following a course of due diligence to
ensure compliance in all areas, The Dental
Warehouse officially handed over the
management of the company to Henry
Schein during the week following the 21st
of October 2013.
Bernice Ichikowitz, co-founder of The
Dental Warehouse and one of the main
driving forces behind the success of The
Dental Warehouse was unable to attend to
the announcement due to a severe illness.
However, she did send her loyal staff a
message of gratitude, “Thank them for the
role that they played in getting us to where
we are at the moment. Thank them for the

way that they as human beings did this and
the way they did this collectively as a
team.” Read on her behalf by Louis
Ichikowitz.
“We are delighted to partner with Louis and
Bernice Ichikowitz and the entire team at
Dental Warehouse, an organization that has
enjoyed a 40-year history of serving the dental
community in South Africa," said Stanley M.
Bergman, Chairman of the Board and Chief
Executive Officer of Henry Schein. "This is a
strategic transaction for Henry Schein that
continues to expand our geographic footprint
and further strengthen relationships with our
valued supplier partners.”

Entering a new market
Henry Schein as a global leader in dental,
medical and animal health practitioner
products focuses on providing its clients
with excellent customer service and
relationship building. Both The Dental
Warehouse and Henry Schein as well as
Litha Healthcare Group focus on providing
their customers with top quality service and
after sales service.
The entry of Henry Schein into the South
African dental market can be seen as a
stepping stone into expanding into the rest
of Africa, a continent of 1 billion people. Not
only is South Africa an exciting and growing
market but so is the rest of Africa where
massive amounts of investment are taking
place and is an area with vast business
potential. “We are very ambitious about
growing in Africa and that’s something we
want to take new technology and product
lines and to work out how to expand our
business in Africa” said Gordon Anderson
the General Manager of Henry Schein Halas
in Australia and who is also on the
management team for Henry Schein South
Africa. He will be overseeing the transition
of the Dental Warehouse into a Henry
Schein Company and was in South Africa for
the handover.
Through its new partnership with The
Dental Warehouse and Litha Healthgroup
and their various expertise and markets,
Henry Schein aims to become a complete
healthcare business both in South Africa
and Africa as a whole.
Anderson stressed that Henry Schein,
“Looks at sales and marketing as being a
critical part of our growth strategy” and is
seen as one of the specific focus areas of

when they enter a new market. Following
on from sales and marketing are other key
areas for a company to operate efficiently
and effectively in the dental trade such as
operations and logistics. “We remain
focused on the operations side… operations
is absolutely critical.” he said, “We have to
get the sales and marketing and the
distribution piece; we have to be excellent
at it and if we are then we’ll be the top
dental company.”
Even though Litha Healthcare Group will
be a minority partner to Henry Schein, CEO
Selwyn Kahanovitz sees Litha’s joining of

this partnership as “a strategic partner
coming into this business, we felt we could
add value at a strategic level and give back
office support in the country”. Litha wants
to see what they could add to the dental
business and perhaps bring in some of
their own products to the dental trade.

Company Information
The Dental Warehouse is one of South
Africa’s biggest importers and distributers
of dental products and has been in

Starter Award 2013
Chris Jenkins

Sirona South Africa has won the Top Starter

Dental System GmbH subsidiary across its
worldwide company base.
Sirona South Africa (SA) opened in March
2012 and its mandate includes Sub-Saharan
Africa. The criteria for the Top Starter
Award includes: start up to specified targets
and growth rate of the business. In both
areas, Sirona SA was one of the highest. The
award is a recognition of the whole of
Sirona SA’s team and their contribution to
building and developing Sirona. Mr Andy
Cyprianos, the General Manager of Sirona
SA said, “We have got a team that is made
up of very talented people in terms of
service and sales that have contributed to
this result”.
“The service aspect is critical” Cyprianos

Sirona sees the South African market as a

levels of service.
After winning this award, Sirona SA still
views the SA market as an exciting market
where they will continue to grow. Cyprianos
would like to thank all of Sirona’s customers

The Dental Warehouse: a family
orientated company
Chris Jenkins

The Dental Warehouse has been operating
in South Africa for over 35 years from small
beginnings in Springs to the recent
acquisition by Henry Schein. The Dental
Warehouse can be considered one of South
Africa’s biggest importers and suppliers to
the dental industry.
One of the keys to the success and
growth of the Dental Warehouse over the
years is its ability to cultivate a strong,
happy, loyal and dedicated staff in all
aspects of the company.
A family run company, there is a strong
family aspect to working at the Dental
Warehouse where staff members are
treated equally, fairly, with compassion and
as one would expect to be treated as a
member of a family. This promotes staff
satisfaction, well-being and company
growth. With this in mind Dental Tribune
South Africa had the opportunity to speak to
a number of employees to get their
perspective and feelings about working at
the Dental Warehouse. This included staff
with over thirty years under their belt at the
company to staff with less than five years.
Name: Hyman
Oddes.
Length of
employment:
32.5 years.
Job Description
and functions:
General office
work including
overflow work
from all sections
of the business.

The company has been operational for
over 35 years of which Hymie, as he is
more commonly known, has worked for
them for nearly 33 years. He knows the
ins and the outs of the company from
stock control systems to having a sound
knowledge of the products that the
company supplies. With that length of
service under his belt he truly believes
that there is a family aspect at the
company. “There is a very good upside to
it, in that the decision making process is
very short and fast.” he said, “People who
have got a personal stake in the business
are treated with a view to a longer term
growth than a shorter term profit.” Hymie
is very enthusiastic about working with
Henry Schein especially with their large
and varied product range as well as their
expertise that The Dental Warehouse can
now offer its clients. He believes that,
“things change and generally speaking
the changes are for the better. This is one
that definitely holds the promise to be
better for the consumer, to be better for
the employee and holds promise to be
better all round for everybody.”
Name: Amos
Puleng.
Length of
employment:
23 years.
Job Description
and functions:
Store man
including picking,
packing and
checking.

Amos begun working for the Dental
Warehouse on the 3rd of March 1990 as his
mother started with Springs Dental before it
became The Dental Warehouse. Through
his mother’s employment he was employed
and has stayed at the company ever since.
He feels that he is part of a family and that
they have looked after him during his time
at the company. Amos is excited about The
Dental Warehouse becoming a Henry
Schein company because he feels, “the
company is still growing up.” Even after 23
years of working at The Dental Warehouse
he enjoys going to work and enjoys
everything about working there.
Name: Liezle Möller.
Length of
employment:
13 years.
Job Description
and functions:
Telesales
Consultant, Jane
of all trades
including getting
sales and
servicing
customers.
Liezle is a single mother who is in her
13th year at the company. Through her
time at the company she feels she is part
of the family and has found that The
Dental Warehouse is responsive to their
employee’s needs. She has found that at
the company the other employees are
caring, are generally nice and stand
together when the need arises. After
having worked at government institutions

before working at The Dental Warehouse
she has found the setup and vibe to be
very different. With Henry Schein coming
in to the South African dental market,
Liezle is very excited and happy. “We are
going to have a broader spectrum at the
end of the day that we will be able to have
more product ranges” she said “Being an
international company now, we are going
to fly somewhere.”
Name: Cecilia Mohlala.
Length of
employment:
3 years.
Job Description
and functions:
Switchboard
administrator
including meet
and greet walk-in
clients and
answering phone
calls.
Even though Cecilia has only been at the
company for 3 years she knows that if she
has a problem she go see and speak to
Melanie Savvides, the joint MD at The
Dental Warehouse, anytime and she
knows the company will help her in any
situation. With only 3 years of service
under her belt she does believe that
working at The Dental Warehouse can be
a long term career. Cecilia has found that
there is no pressure at the company as
long as you do your work and not too
much office politics to upset the ambience
of the office. DT

Dental Tribune South African Edition - December 2013

NOMADS Day – South Africa 2013

Lectures were well attended by the delegates.

Chris Jenkins

From the 7th to the 9th of November
NOMADS 2013 was held at Vodacom World,
Johannesburg and at the Westin, Cape
Town. NOMADS is held yearly and is highly
anticipated by both traders and dental
professionals.
NOMADS is one of the biggest dental
conferences in South Africa that caters for not
only dentists, endodontists, prosthodontists,
periodontists and orthodontists but also dental
assistants, dental therapists, oral hygienists,
dental technicians and dental receptionists.
The NOMADS Day essentially provides an
all-round congress for all dental professionals
to enhance their knowledge, skills and
expertise through lectures presented by top
international and South African speakers. The
total number of attendees at NOMADS 2013
was 724 dental professionals and receptionists
(Johannesburg and Cape Town combined).
In addition, the exhibition at NOMADS is the
largest dental exhibition in South Africa with
a combined total of 61 exhibitors and 250
traders from both NOMADS exhibitions. The
exhibition showcases the latest product lines
that South Africa’s dental suppliers are able

to supply into the dental market. It is also a
great opportunity for traders to get valuable
face time with their clients as well as to
broach new clients. During the lunch breaks
and break periods the trader’s stands were
substantially crowded and most, if not all
traders felt that NOMADS 2013 was a success.
The speaker line up at NOMADS 2013 was
equally as impressive as the number of
attendees and exhibition. With a world class
line up of international key note speakers
and top local speakers the delegates were
treated to exceptional lectures. The
international key-note speakers included:
Dr Wilhelm Pertot (France), Dr Eduardo
Mahn (Chile), Dr Stephan Lampl (Austria),
Dr Nick Russon (UK), Dr Alasdair McKelvie
(UK). The experience and expertise of the
speakers is reflected by the publishing of
numerous books and articles across the
world as well as speaking at a host of
congresses worldwide. The key-note
speakers spoke on a wide range of topics
including endodontics, esthetic dentistry
and implantology and dental technology to
name a few.

A wide range of topics were also presented
by the local speakers who included: Prof Peet
van der Vyver (NOMADS President), Dr Neil
Williams (NOMADS Committee Member), Dr
Geoff Patterson, Dr Desi Moodley, Dr
Howard Gluckman, Dr Andre Uys, Mr Mark
Dowson, Ms Chantelle Thomson, Mr Russel
Meiring and Ms Ané Radley.
The venues for both the Johannesburg and
Cape Town NOMADS were once again
exceptional; Vodacom World in Midrand
where the ITI Congress Southern Africa
2013 was held and the Westin in Cape Town
where the 2013 Cape Dental Show was held
earlier this year. Both venues provide
excellent catering, service and world class
professionalism when hosting congresses.
NOMADS 2013 was a successful and
entertaining congress with positive feedback
from trader, delegates and speakers alike. DT

DENTSPLY Implants launches Immediate Smile High accolade for
Robert Ganley

Dental Tribune International

DUBLIN, Ireland: Aiming for the rapidly
growing digital implantology market,
DENTSPLY IMPLANTS has announced the
incorporation of SimPlant, dental practice
software for implant treatment planning
developed by Materialise Dental, into its
digital open solutions portfolio. The
solution, which includes ATLANTIS
abutments, is intended to facilitate a fully
individualised immediate restoration in
one sitting, the dental implant solutions
provider said.
The Immediate Smile concept is currently
shown to visitors of the EAO Annual
Scientific Meeting in Dublin. According to
DENTSPLY, it will be available for all major
implant systems and in all major markets.
Clinicians interested in participating in the
launch of the solution can register on
Materialise’s website.

The dental division of the Belgian
company Materialise has been part of
DENTSPLY since 2006. It launched the first
version of its planning software in 1991.
Last year, a more user-friendly version,
SimPlant GO, was released.
Dr Anders Holmén, Director of Global
Product Management, Digital Implant
Solutions, DENTSPLY Implants, commented:
“Immediate Smile is a unique solution,
through which at implant installation, in one
single visit, the surgical guide, a
patient-specific ATLANTIS abutment and a
temporary restoration can be provided.
Everything is planned, processed and
produced via a seamless digital pathway. This
results in an expedited treatment process of
high quality, serving our customers in a very
effective way and delivering satisfaction and
comfort to patients.”

Robert Ganley, CEO of Ivoclar
Vivadent, was inducted as Honorary
Fellow into the International
College of Dentists.

In addition to Immediate Smile, DENTSPLY
has a new short implant for the ANKYLOS
implant system and the XiVE Platform-Switch
on display. Available for both DENTSPLY
implant systems, the WeldOne supports
immediate loading solutions that allow dental
professionals to create temporary and
durable restorations reinforced by titanium
frameworks welded directly in the mouth. DT

On 1 November 2013, Robert Ganley was
inducted as Honorary Fellow into the
International College of Dentists (ICD). The
accolade was awarded in honour of Mr
Ganley’s outstanding and meritorious service
to the dental profession and community.
The ceremony took place on the occasion
of the 84th Annual Convocation of the ICD
in New Orleans. Additionally to the new
Honorary Fellows, 300 dentists from the
United States were invited into the College.
The College, with representative chapters in
more than 80 countries, has over 11,000
members, including 6,500 in the US. DT

Robert Ganley, CEO of Ivoclar Vivadent (right),

Dr. Paul E. Stubbs, DDS, President of the ICD.

Ivoclar Vivadent
supports the
victims of the
typhoon in the
Philippines
Ivoclar Vivadent AG will donate 200,000
USD to support the people in the Philippines
affected by Typhoon Haiyan with immediate
relief measures. A total of 100,000 USD of
the donation will be provided to the
Philippine Red Cross for direct emergency
relief. A further 100,000 USD will be used for
the re-establishment of dental health care
measures for the population at large.
Christoph Zeller, Chairman of the
Supervisory Board, explains the company’s
commitment: “We feel great sympathy for
the Philippine people and we share their
suffering and despair. We hope that our
donation will provide at least some relief to
the survivors and speed up the
reconstruction of the affected regions.“
Ivoclar Vivadent has been operating a
manufacturing plant for ceramic and resin
teeth near the Philippine capital Manila
since 1993. The company employs about 300
people at this location. Neither the
employees nor the manufacturing plant
were directly affected by the typhoon’s
devastating force. DT

NSK launches new
products in 2013,
plans more for 2014
Robert Selleck, DTA

NEW YORK, N.Y., USA: More than 17,000
individual parts go into the production of
NSK handpieces, and close to 90 percent of
those parts are built and tested in-house by
NSK. This total-control approach in the
manufacturing of its products is how the
company backs up its slogan, “Expect
perfection.”
According to Rob Gochoel, NSK Dental
director of sales and marketing, the company
adheres to that same “expect perfection”
philosophy in its commitment to product
development. Key to that commitment is the
communications chain NSK continues to
build in North America — linking dental
professionals to NSK product engineers.
Because NSK handles every step of product
development in-house — research, design,
manufacturing and testing — feedback from
customers is quickly funneled directly to the
people who can take action.
“We’re constantly seeking out and
receiving feedback in our product
development efforts,” Gochoel said. “It’s all
about making dentists more productive.
Coming up with improvements that make
dentists’ lives easier — and make their
patients more comfortable is key.”
In 2013, with the year still not over, NSK has
launched two major products. At least one
more is expected to be out before year’s end.
And at least two are far enough along that
2014 launches are already on the calendar.
Here’s a summary from Gochoel of
recently launched and soon-to-launch

major products and their release dates:
• March 2013: iProphy Air — a handpiece
designed for dental hygiene work.
• May 2013: Ti-Max Z45L — the world’s first
45-degree electric handpiece.
• Later in October 2013 (debuting at the
ADA Annual Session in New Orleans):
Ti-Max X450 series — air-driven
45-degree surgical handpieces with an
industry-leading two-year warranty.
• January 2014: Ti-Max Z series — a
premium air-driven series.
• March/April 2014: a new handpiece
maintenance unit.

iProphy Air hygiene handpiece
Launched in March, the iProphy Air
handpiece is designed specifically for dental
hygienists, with the core design objectives
being to minimize hand fatigue, reduce
noise, increase versatility and simplify
cleaning and sterilization.
NSK literature describes the handpiece as
having a slim and easy-to-grasp design that
is up to 15 percent lighter and 10 percent
shorter than competitive handpieces. The
design incorporates NSK’s micro machining
technology to reduce vibration and achieve
“virtually silent operation.” On the versatility
front, the handpiece works with all standard
doriot-style disposable or metal angles and
connects directly to all four-hole tubing.
A unique two-part construction enables
the handpiece’s nose-cone portion to be
separately sterilized for proper disinfection

Three African countries to phase
down dental amalgam use
Dental Tribune International

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania: As reported
by Daily News, a Tanzanian online
newspaper, the East Africa Dental Amalgam
Phase-down Project has been successfully
implemented in Kenya, Uganda and
Tanzania. Among other objectives, the
project will investigate supply and trade
patterns, and encourage switching to
alternatives to dental amalgam in the three
countries.
Under the co-ordination of UNEP
Chemicals, the centre for all United Nations
Environment
Programme
activities
concerning chemicals, and the World
Health Organization’s Global Oral Health
Programme, the ministries of Environment
and Health in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda
will be collaborating with the FDI World
Dental Federation, International Dental
Manufacturers and their respective national
dental associations to explore essential
conditions for a phase-down in the use of
dental amalgam.
Over a period of a year, the project will
investigate the current supply and trade of
dental amalgam and materials alternative to
amalgam. It will also assess the current
waste management practices, create
awareness of preventive dental care and
encourage a switch to appropriate
alternatives to dental amalgam among
dentists and patients. In addition, the project

is aimed at environmentally sound
management of dental restoration
material waste in selected dental facilities
in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
However, Prof. Febronia Kokulengya
Kahabuka, project co-ordinator in Tanzania
and Associate Dean of the School of
Dentistry at the Muhimbili University of
Health and Allied Sciences, cautioned:
“Even with the success of the pilot project,
Tanzania faces inadequate funding to roll
out to all dental facilities across the country.”
Amalgam, which contains up to 50 per cent
mercury, remains one of the most widely
used restorative materials worldwide,
although scientists have expressed concerns
about its possible adverse health effects,
especially among younger patients. The
chemical has been linked to kidney, brain,
and neurological damage, as well as
damage to the digestive tract. DT

and compliance. Additional nose-cones can
be bought separately.
The design enables the handpiece to swivel
at the user’s fingertips for improved
maneuverability during polishing procedures.

Ti-Max Z45L electric contra-angle
Among the top requests constantly being
analyzed by NSK engineers is this: What can
you do to improve accessibility and visibility
when working on hard-to-reach molars?
The company’s latest response, launched in
May, is the Ti-Max Z45L.
According to NSK, the handpiece boasts
two industry firsts: It’s the world’s first
45-degree contra-angle electric handpiece,
and it has the first two-way water spray
function (mist or jet, on demand). According
to the company, the overall resulting design
provides “effortless access to back molars
that a standard contra-angle can’t match.”
The handpiece’s growing legion of fans are
finding that less time is needed for sectioning
and third-molar extractions compared with
the standard contra-angles — reducing stress
for both the clinician and patient.

The ability to instantly shift between mist
or jet spray via a small switch on the
handpiece base, makes it suitable for a
range of procedures, such as third-molar
preparation and clarifications of the root
canal orifice.
The jet spray is used to prevent
subcutaneous emphysema in surgical
procedures, and the mist spray cools the bur
while cutting. The handpiece handles a
wide range of burs, from a 20 mm standard
bur to a 25 mm bur.
A clean-head mechanism is designed to
automatically prevent the entry of oral
fluids and other contaminants into the
handpiece head — prolonging the life of the
bearings. A microfilter prevents particles
from entering the water spray system to
ensure constant, optimum cooling.
The solid titanium body is 30 percent
lighter than stainless steel, while also being
more durable and corrosion resistant.
A unique head-cap design creates an
“anti-heat system” that helps limit heat
generation during treatment — for
increased patient comfort and safety. DT
