DT[2] =>Layout 1 2 Local News Dental Tribune South African Edition - June 2013 Cooperation between Universities of Pretoria and Adelaide Prof Francois de Wet - Deputy Chairperson of the School of Dentistry, U.P., and Head of the Department of Odontology A Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) between the University of Pretoria and the University of Adelaide, Australia, was signed during a visit of Prof Johann de Vries, Dean of the School of Dentistry at the University of Adelaide, to the School of Dentistry, University of Pretoria on Wednesday 27 April 2013. This MOC was initiated by Prof Francois de Wet (Deputy Chairperson of the School of Dentistry, U.P., and Head of the Department of Odontology) who has had ties with the University of Adelaide for a number of years. Prof de Wet has been lecturing to undergraduate as well as postgraduate students for short periods at Adelaide for the past 3 years, and has also been involved in the manufacturing of educational videos in collaboration with their Audio-visual department. The two deans of the Dental Schools, Prof At Ligthelm (UP) and Prof Johann de Vries (Adelaide) soon became enthusiastically involved, and after some discussions and negotiations, a Memorandum of Cooperation was developed. During the signing ceremony our Faculty of Health Sciences was represented by the Dean of Health Sciences, Prof Eric Buch. Also present were the two Dental Deans (Ligthelm and De Vries), as well as Prof de Wet. The MOC had previously been signed and approved by the Principal of UP, Prof Cheryl de la Rey. Prof De Vries took the MOC back to Adelaide for their Principal’s signature, after which the document will be active and official. A number of areas of cooperation are already foreseen e.g. joint research projects, as well as the exchange of staff and later maybe even students. The Cape Dental Show has been running since 2010 with five shows in the bag to date, including one in Namibia. An interesting aspect of the Cape Dental Show is that it is a non-profit show whereby all profit made is kept within the show and rolled over to the next year. This allows the organizers to focus on improving each show, providing both the delegates and traders with a top class event. The show is essentially a Trade Show featuring an exhibition of various traders, but also has a comprehensive clinical programme featuring top local and international speakers. For the first time in South Africa, which will be to the benefit of the dental industry and profession, all the major organizations and societies - bar two - were involved in the Cape Dental Show. These included: The South African Dental Association, the South African Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry, the Dental Technology Association of South Africa, the South African Academy of Computerized Dentistry, the Implant and Aesthetic Academy, the Smile Foundation, Med-Bay, Modern Dentistry Media, NOMADS, DTASA and OHASA. Many of South Africa's leading Dental Suppliers exhibit at the show due to the good exposure they receive from the high number of dental delegates attending. Exhibiting at the show is also an opportunity for companies to showcase new products and equipment. An interesting idea used at the show was that the delegates were tasked with getting a stamp from each stand on a list of suppliers. The idea behind this was to get the delegates to visit each stand at least once to view what was on display. Stamped sheets were placed in a box from which prizes were Organiser Ralf Schulz with Dr Dewald Botha, winner of the Chery QQ3 0.8 TE car. drawn. The show had R300 000-00 in prizes, including a Chery QQ3 0.8 TE Car, which was won by Dr Dewald Botha. The comprehensive lecture programme, set over three full show days, covered many themes and topics in modern dentistry or as the organizers call it; "Facets of Dentistry". This kept the delegates interested and attentive throughout and allowed them to learn about different subjects within dentistry so as to better themselves and their practice. Another interesting feature of the Cape Dental Show is that all the lectures are open to every delegate attending the show. Dentists can attend lectures for technicians and vice versa. Doing this allows the various professions to get a fuller feel for modern dentistry. In addition to lectures, the show offered delegates the chance to attend courses that encompassed hands-on demonstrations and hands-on courses. The programme featured well known national and also well known international speakers. Ralf Schulz, the chief coordinator, made sure the show ran according to schedule and that everyone knew were they had to be and what was happening. Wayne Gleeson, Michelle Marola, Marilize van der Linde and Michael and John Burk from Med-Bay also made up the Cape Dental Show team and were equally involved in ensuring the success of a very pleasant and well organized conference. The Westin Hotel delivered excellent hospitality and their service was exemplary. In a true Cape Town sense and feeling there was always a buzz at the show whether the delegates were in lectures or visiting the exhibition. Marc Lottering, local and international comedian, opened the show with thoroughly entertaining and hilarious stand-up comedy that was well received by the audience and set the tone for the next 3 days. If you are looking for a very good excuse to get to Cape Town for the weekend; then this it. See you at the Cape Dental Show next year. DT Ivodent Stand. The Medical University of Southern Africa (MEDUNSA) and the University of the North merged together on the 1st of January 2005 to form the University of Limpopo. The two former universities are now campuses of the University of Limpopo. MEDUNSA was established in 1976 by the Apartheid government to provide tertiary education in the fields of dentistry, medicine and allied health and nursing sciences to disadvantaged South Africans both economically and because of racial ideology, educationally too. MEDUNSA campus also provides training facilities where students can experience the practical side of their chosen career. Dr Zodwa Zwane who is the second year coordinator initiated the idea of giving awards to her second year students as well as the 3rd year students currently at the studying at the School of Oral Health Sciences. The awards are based on academic performance alone with the top two students in the class of MDS 2nd year receiving prizes and are intended to keep the students focused on achieving good grades throughout their learning career. The student’s academic performance is measured by continual academic assessment which includes tests done throughout the year and the end of year exams. The top achieving student was Precious Nomfundo Gwala and in second place was Krizette Rozimiarek. Both the winners have their names placed on an awards board. Head of the Prosthodontic Department at 1st place - PN Gwala and Dr Zwane. 2nd place - K Roziniarek and Dr Zwane. the School of Oral Sciences, Dr Pusetso Moipolai said the awards are to: “inculcate an investment into their careers, starting early on and to acknowledge the academic excellence of junior dental students.” Dr Moipolai wants the awards to motivate the younger students to strive towards academic excellence earlier on as previously only final year students received acknowledgment for excellence in academics. This is turn will be beneficial to both the students and their patients as they will inevitably be better dental professionals. Dr Moipolai has been head of the Prosthodontic Department since June 2011 and her vision is to graduate the best dental students in Prosthodontics who are flexible and can adapt to their different working environments. She is backed up by a comprehensive teaching staff off full-time and part-time lecturers. Almost 300 research papers were presented with nine symposia and 17 table clinic presentations, where the newest scientific methods and technologies were displayed. The South African Endodontic Society was represented by Prof Peet van der Vyver (President), and Drs Heath Mark (secretary), Allan Deutsch, Boela van der Merwe and Heinrich Dippenaar. The 3-day congress featured plenary and keynote lectures presented by leading international speakers from all over the world, including Prof Peet van der Vyver. His lecture, ‘Clinical Management of blocked/calcified root canal systems – Materials and techniques’ was well attended and well received. Lecture topics included regeneration of the dental pulp, re- and auto-transplantation of teeth, biofilms in endodontics, treatment outcomes, and retreatment. Among the speakers familiar to South African audiences were Dr Cliff Ruddle, Dr Dan Fischer, Prof Paul V Abbott, Dr Martin Levin and Dr Arnaldo Castelucci. The World Endodontic Congress is a gathering of all IFEA member countries to exchange views and ideas on all matters pertaining to endodontics. The Endodontic Society of South Africa, in conjunction with Nomads, as hosts for the 10th World Endodontic Congress in 2016, presented all delegates with a typically South African memento - a bead and wire animal on a key-ring - to the delight of everyone. The keyrings were worn on the name tags and became the unofficial ‘pre-registration’ for the next WEC. Sunday 26th was a much anticpated day, when the host country for the 12th WEC in 2019 was announced. India was selected with Chennai being the host city. The SIMROID realistically simulates the behavior and reactions of a patient and can communicate with students and dentists in Japanese and English. Both dental treatment and appropriate communication skills can be learned using the robot under almost real conditions. The practice units are monitored and recorded by two cameras and a computer that can also control the “patient’s” reaction. SIMROID is an ideal addition for dental training and represents the possible next generation training model.
