Female dental professionals are not only overcoming barriers but are also reshaping oral healthcare, bringing fresh perspectives and accelerating the industry’s development. Traditionally, cultural norms have restricted women’s career choices, presenting a significant challenge for aspiring female dentists. However, greater access to higher education and increased awareness of medical careers have inspired many women to pursue dentistry. These trailblazers are more than just skilled practitioners; they are role models, showing younger generations that longstanding obstacles can be surmounted. Their resilience is a testament to the profound impact they have on communities and future healthcare professionals. Women in dentistry are making significant contributions across public and private sectors. From establishing clinics to engaging in research and academia, they play a crucial role in expanding access to oral healthcare countrywide, especially in rural areas, where healthcare facilities are often scarce. The presence of female dentists encourages more women to seek treatment, thereby creating a more inclusive healthcare environment. Creative DT Pakistan An encouraging trend is the rise of women specializing in postgraduate dental programs, entering fields such as orthodontics, prosthodontics, and oral surgery—traditionally dominated by men. Following a recent meeting, both bodies have agreed on a unified approach to help these students in pursuing their studies abroad while ensuring the efficient use of Pakistan’s financial resources. It was decided that in the 2025-26 academic year, the PMDC and the ministry will implement new guidelines to facilitate the integration of foreign-trained professionals into Pakistan’s healthcare system. These measures are intended to help students avoid enrolling in institutions with substandard academic performance and ensure a smooth transition upon their return to Pakistan. The PMDC will collaborate closely with Pakistani diplomatic missions to ensure that foreign universities meet the required criteria. For the 2024-25 academic year, Pakistani students seeking admission to international medical and dental schools must meet specific requirements, including holding a valid Multiple Entry Visa, achieving a minimum of 60pc in F.Sc Pre-Medical, or scoring at least 550 marks in each SAT-II subject or 50pc in foreign MCAT/ UCAT exams. Additionally, they must secure a minimum of 50pc in the MDCAT conducted in Pakistan, with results valid for three years. It’s crucial that the foreign institution is recognized by the PMDC, particularly for enrollments before the 2024-25 academic year. The medical qualification must come from a WFME-accredited institution, and students must obtain a PMDC Student Registration Certificate before beginning their studies abroad. They will also be required to complete at least 6,200 hours of study over five years, maintaining an 80pc attendance rate. For the students studying in non-Englishspeaking countries, six months of language training is mandatory. Moreover, passing the National Registration Examination (NRE) is essential for full PMDC registration after qualification. Students must also provide their residence and contact details in their host country before departure. This policy aims to ensure that Pakistani students abroad achieve high educational standards and are well-prepared to contribute to Pakistan’s healthcare system upon their return. –PR NEWS DENTAL TRIBUNE | PAKISTAN EDITION | NOV-DEC 2024 BUDC hosts lecture on digital implant dentistry by foreign expert Participants attentively listen to Dr Stefano Pieralli’s lecture on digital implant dentistry, emphasizing the significance of innovation and precision in the field. –Photo: DT Pakistan KARACHI: The Department the field, highlighting the of Operative Dentistry at importance of innovation Bahria University Dental and precision. From digital scanners to AIassisted diagnoses and virtual consultations, new tools are reshaping patient care. However, while these developments are promising, they also raise an important question: Is technology genuinely enhancing dental care, or are there downsides that must be considered? The benefits of digital tools in dentistry are evident. Technologies such as digital impressions and 3D printing have made treatments faster and more comfortable, enabling services like same-day crowns. AI-powered diagnostics can detect issues like caries and periodontal disease at an early stage, allowing for more accurate treatment and reducing the need for multiple visits, which is advantageous for both patients and practitioners. Additionally, the rise of teledentistry has expanded access to dental care, particularly for those living in remote or underserved areas, by providing virtual Creative DT Pakistan consultations that can address concerns without requiring a trip to the dental clinic. However, these technological advances come with challenges. Technology should enhance, not overshadow, the human element of patient care. Data privacy is another concern, as storing dental records online poses risks to sensitive patient information. With the widespread adoption of these technologies, dental education must evolve to keep pace. Aspiring dentists will need to be proficient not only in advancements in dentistry. Prizes were awarded, with Rs50,000 for first place and Rs30,000 for the runner-up, both sponsored by Authentik Pakistan. Research from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) indicates that AI technology could significantly reduce the number of missed fractures and broken bones when analyzing X-rays. This promising development aims to ease the burden on healthcare professionals while improving patient outcomes. Four AI tools are poised to be recommended for use across urgent care facilities in England, pending further evidence collection on their effectiveness. These tools are designed to work in tandem with healthcare professionals, ensuring that every X-ray is thoroughly reviewed by trained experts. Currently, broken bones go undetected in 3-10% of cases—this marks one of the most common diagnostic errors in emergency departments. The situation is compounded by a shortage of radiologists and radiographers, with vacancy rates sitting at 12.5% and 15%, respectively, as highlighted in the NHS’s long-term plan. Mark Chapman, director of health technology at NICE, emphasized the advantages of integrating AI into clinical practice. “These AI technologies are safe to use and could spot fractures that humans might miss, given the pressure and demands these professional groups work under,” he explained. By enhancing diagnostic accuracy, AI has the potential to accelerate the diagnostic process and decrease the need for follow-up appointments resulting from missed fractures. NICE reassured that the integration of AI is unlikely to increase incorrect diagnoses or unnecessary referrals to fracture clinics. Each X-ray will always be evaluated by a radiologist, ensuring a double-check system that enhances patient safety. The potential applications of AI in healthcare are vast. Beyond fracture detection, AI is already being utilized to identify early signs of breast cancer, assess heart attack risk, and even predict future pandemics. A public consultation on the draft NICE guidance regarding the use of AI in urgent care is currently underway, with feedback welcomed until November 5. As these technologies continue to develop, the future of urgent care looks promising, paving the way for quicker, more accurate diagnoses and improved patient care.)
