Rishi Sunaks take on dentistry

DT Pakistan Report

KARACHI: Rishi Sunak responds to a question
on dentistry in his first Prime Minister's
Question Time.
The South Derbyshire MP, Heather Wheeler
called for enhanced regulations to let foreigner
dentists and physicians operate in the UK.
To the British Medical Council and the
British Dental Association, Heather Wheeler
requested, "Will indeed my right respectable
friend kindly use this - his first appearance in
the dispatch box - to make it clear that, along
with so much learning areas starting up,
individuals should always allow more doctors
and dentists to work in the UK so that the

Prosthodontics for achieving the
milestone and said that people
with facial disfigurement due to
an accident start to feel alone in
society. In such a case, the process
of facial prosthesis in JSMU will

can undergo care on the NHS."
Sunak emphasized that attempts are being
made by the authorities to improve the
registration process for international dentists.
He continued, "I'm delighted that there are
3,500 more doctors and approximately 9,000
additional nurses working this year compared
to last."
But Heather Wheeler is right; we're
attempting to make it easier for dentists,
especially to qualify to operate locally, even
if they weren't trained here. With this approach,
we could assist the NHS in executing a longterm recruitment and selection policy and
ensuring that every person has access to the
treatment they deserve.

connecting these people with
society and the said people will
be able to live a life confidently.
Professor Yawar Ali Abidi,
Dean of SIOHS, and Zubair
Abbasi, Principal Professor,
appreciated the efforts of the
team of the Prosthodontics

In particular, he stated that
if he was appointed as a prime
minister, he would indeed
"reinstate NHS dentistry." Establishing an "early
diagnosis" strategy with inspections in primary
schools was among his plans. Sunak previously
indicated that he is mindful of the pressing
necessity to address the problem dentistry is
currently witnessing.
I drank a good amount of Coke while I was a
kid, which is the reason I have seven fillings,
the man claimed to ease the situation. He
further said, I respect your anguish, and we
actually need exceptional dental care.
Everyone's top objective in terms of public
amenities is the NHS.

In this regard, Professor
Mehmood Hussain, Head of the
Prosthodontics Department, has
said that our aim is to make our
department a center of excellence

in Maxillofacial Prosthodontics in
Pakistan, as there are no such
centers in Pakistan yet.
With the vision of honorable
Vice Chancellor JSMU, SIOHS will
be ready to provide such
prosthesis at a very low cost to
facilitate such patients in future
as well, he added. -PR

No added sugar baby foods meaningless for breakfast BDA
DT Pakistan Report
UNITED KINGDOM: The British
Dental Association (BDA) recently
said that government needs to
take notice of the misleading
marketing claims made by
children's food manufacturers
Latest findings show breakfast
foods for adolescents and
toddlers contain a high amount
of sugar (upto 4 teaspoons) in
each serving. However, more
than half of such products in the
market claim to have 'no added
sugars' or 'only naturally occurring
sugars' even though many of
these contain sugars from fruit
concentrates and purees. All of
which are detrimental to dental
health.

Photo: holleusa

A BDA study of 109 baby
pouches aimed at children aged
under 12 months found over a
quarter contained more sugar by
volume than Coca Cola.
Whereas parents of toddlers

are the target market for such
products that reportedly contain
150% of the sugar levels of a soft
drink.
The BDA insists on there being
accurate and transparent food

labels on such products, including
the complete removal of
misleading nutrition and health
claims on baby and toddler food
products.
BDA Chair Eddie Crouch said:
'The food industry is walking
parents down the garden path,
pushing sugar-laden products as
"healthy options".
'Claims of "no added sugar"
are utterly meaningless when
toddlers are receiving four
teaspoons over breakfast.
'Tooth decay is the number
one reason for hospital admission
among young children, and
Ministers can't remain bystanders.
Action here is a prerequisite if
we're ever going to turn the tables
on wholly preventable diseases.'

Good periodontal status necessary
for implant-bone interface: Seminar
LAHORE: Akhtar Saeed Medical and Dental
College (AMDC) aims to educate dental
graduates about the latest advancements in
the field of dentistry.
A seminar on the topic of "Implant-bone
Interface" was recently held at Akhtar Saeed
Medical and Dental College. Dr Sabir
Hussain Principal Akhtar Saeed Dental
College (ASDC) organised this event.
Program started with the recitation of Holy
Quran.
G uest speaker was DrMuhammad Faisal
Rana currently working as a consultant
Periodontist and Implantologist in Kuwait
University. He is a foreign well-qualified
dentist. He obliged us with visiting our campus.
He shed some light on basics of the implant
and bone interface. He described the role of
periodontal conditions of the patient and its
impact on the implant stability.
According to him, the Periodontal status
of a patient is the key to success for any clinical

procedure. Basic periodontal examination (BPE)
scoring is universally accepted for concluding
the prognosis of the treatment plan. He stated
that this scoring should be done by every
general dental practitioner. According to the

Photo: DT Pakistan

new classification of periodontal diseases 2017
BPE score of 3 is best suitable for implant
placement.
It gives us clues about the loopholes which
can lead to implant failure. So Implant-bone
interface is the critical area which needs to be
properly evaluated before the actual procedure.

Today, patients choose implants as their
last option to correct esthetics as well as
mastication. His opinion was that nothing can
replace a natural tooth neither a fixed nor a
removable prosthesis. If a person maintains
his oral hygiene and takes care of his
periodontium with proper brushing and
flossing methods, he or she will not be
prone to poor dental health.
He shared two cases with us for better
understanding of the topic. Through these
cases he enlightened the prevalence of the
periodontal diseases. Peri-implantitis was
also discussed in detail. He further stated
that the predictive outcomes for the success
of implant largely depend on the maintenance
of oral hygiene. Methods to cope the implant
failures were also discussed.
There was a question and answer session
at the end. All the faculty members and house
officers participated in the session followed
by bundle of thanks by the principal. -PR

Norwegian researchers confirm
factors contributing to negative oral
health-related quality of life
By Anisha Hall Hoppe,
Dental Tribune International
ROGALAND, Norway: Norwegian
researchers have found that
dental treatment avoidance,
increased levels of dental anxiety
and general anxiety, and
increased age had a negative
association with oral healthrelated quality of life (OHRQoL).
The team suggested that, in
contrast to existing guidance on
using exposure therapy to help
patients, those with high levels
of anxiety required more holistic
anxiety treatment options,
particularly when their dental
anxiety was accompanied by
general anxiety.
Patients with pronounced dental
phobia and those who had been
victims of abuse were recruited
from a therapeutic dental service
in Rogaland to be evaluated.

Different types of anxiety contributed to patients avoiding dental treatment for an average
of 4.7 years, according to a recent study in Norway. (Image: pathdoc/Shutterstock)

Using questionnaires about their
social, educational and dental
histories, the team evaluated the
levels of dental anxiety, general
anxiety and OHRQoL for each
patient.
The average patient age was
36 years, and more than two-

thirds were women. The patients
surveyed averaged 4.7 years since
they had previously received
dental treatment and 9.1 years
since it was determined that they
had fully restored dentition
without further treatment of a
specific issue.

Unsurprisingly, the patients
noted that their oral health had a
negative impact on their ability to
show their teeth, enjoy food, smile,
eat or laugh. The team
unexpectedly found that it was
general anxiety and not dental
anxiety that had the strongest

Citing other studies, the present
study noted the value of the

for high-anxiety patients. It also
noted that the option to take an
anti-anxiety medication was equally
as useful as exposure therapy.

Strontium-loaded scaffold
may improve dental
implant wound healing
By Franziska Beier,
Dental Tribune International

B U F FA LO, N . Y. , U S :
Formation of an effective
soft-tissue seal around
dental implants can be
supported by modifying
implant surfaces. A
research team from the
University at Buffalo has
found that strontium
s u p p o r ts s of t-t i s s u e
function and therefore
developed a customisable
strontium-filled scaffold
that is intended to
improve wound healing
and tissue attachment in
dental
implant
treatments.
Strontium, a naturally
occurring metal, has been

shown to be helpful in the
treatment and prevention
of osteoporosis. It has
been used for treating
dentinal hypersensitivity
and works as an agent
against plaque and
gingivitis. Previous
research by the university
found that the metal
promotes the activity of
fibroblasts-a cell type
responsible for forming
connective tissues that
plays a crucial role in
wound healing.
In the current study,
the research team
developed a strontiumloaded hydrogel scaffold
that can be customised
to any size and shape of
implant collar or healing

abutment by the creation
of reusable, ring-shaped
templates and moulds.
The strontium ions are
then released from the
scaffold in an initial burst
over 24 hours, followed
by a sustained dosage
over four days. According
to the researchers, this
process involves minimal
toxicity for the patients.
The s tudy results
indicated that the
strontium ions were
effectively released from
the scaffold, stimulating
gingival fibroblast activity
and thus promoting
wound healing. In
addition, tests showed
that the hydrogel scaffold
alone had only a minimal

The study authors
stated that the strontiumloaded scaffold displays
good biocompatibility
and functionality and that
it has great potential for
promoting wound healing

Researchers suggest their
3D-printed veneers are the future
By Anisha Hall Hoppe,
Dental Tribune International
MOSCOW, Russia: Researchers
from Austria, Germany and Russia
have collaborated in successfully
using lithography-based ceramic
manufacturing (LCM), a form of
additive manufacturing, to create
ceramic veneers, and they believe
the process is an even better
solution for dentistry than the
existing methods of heat pressing

processing phase of the ceramic
materials used. In the present
study, the team used DentalCAD
to design six classic veneers which
were printed with a CeraFab
System S65 Medical printer
utilising digital light processing
technology. After post-processing
and firing in a furnace, the team
used a Programat CS3 for final
sintering. Though patient scans
were utilised to develop the
veneers and to assess their fit and

concluded the case was proof of
concept.
The team explained their
decision to pursue additive
manufacturing by explaining in
the publication: “Subtractive
manufacturing does not provide
the absolute freedom in its design
as there may be some application
that cannot be achieved by
milling, due to being unattainable
for a milling instrument. In such
cases, additive manufacturing,

Prosthodontics at the Peoples’
Friendship University of Russia
(also known as RUDN University)
in Moscow, commented in a press
release: “Dental glass-ceramic,
especially lithium disilicate, is
widely used for crowns, overlays
and veneers in aesthetically
significant areas as it overcomes
the limitations of metal–ceramic
restorations. 3D-printing
technology allows thin lithium

or milling. According to the team,
the thin ceramic no-preparation
veneers produced during the
course of the study effectively
demonstrate that 3D printing can
be the ideal way to produce
chairside lithium disilicate
restorations.
Previous studies have
attempted additive manufacturing
for creating veneers but often ran
into a significant increase in the
time required during the post-

function within the mouth, the
team did not cement the LCMprinted restorations as they are
not yet an approved option for
definitive restorations. The team
also produced no-preparation
veneers in a similar manner.
The results in both cases
corresponded to those produced
with heat-press and milling
techniques, including accurate
marginal adaptation. Though not
cemented, the researchers

with its layer-by-layer working
principle, surpasses the
subtractive one.” Because
fractures can occur as a result of
creating thin ceramic pieces
through
subtractive
manufacturing, each veneer often
does not exceed 0.3 mm in
thickness, and traditionally
requires an analogue preparation
technique.
Dr Alexey Unkovskiy, associate
professor in the Department of

of 0.1–0.2 mm and can therefore
replace press technology.
However, there are no clinical
reports in the literature on this
under conditions in vivo.”
The study, titled “Additive
manufacturing of lithium disilicate
with the LCM process for classic
and non-prep veneers:
Preliminary technical and clinical
case experience”, was published
online on 1 September 2022 in
Materials.
