On the other hand, 64.15 per cent of national dental graduates seated for the exam passed the NLE. However, the result for foreign dental graduates remained at 29.17 per cent. Recently the PMC spokesperson stated that, due to a lack of resources, hospitals, language barriers, and a shortage of patients and beds, a number of foreign medical and dental institutes awarded degrees without a house job or providing any practical clinical experience, which he asserted was one of the main reasons for foreign graduates' low pass percentage in the NLE exams. PMC has performed NLE twice in order to grant licences to interested international graduates, according to the spokesperson. He maintained that the purpose of conducting NLEs for foreign graduates also was to assess their intellectual and practical abilities before granting them a licence. PMC is working not just to improve the quality of healthcare standards but also to protect patients' rights, he added.[2] =>DTI-PDF Mar-Apr 22.FH10 NEWS 2 DENTAL TRIBUNE Pakistan Edition MAR-APR 2022 PMC on the ropes: Will it survive the change of government? I DT Pakistan Report SLAMABAD - The Islamabad High Court (IHC) suspended the single bench judgement and restored PMC President Dr Arshad Taqi, Vice President Mohammad Ali Raza, members Roshanay Zafar, Tariq Ahmed Khan, Dr Rumina Hassan, Dr Asif Loya and Dr Anisur Rehman who were earlier shown the door. Earlier, Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani of the IHC declared the appointment of all members of the Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC), including its president, illegal. As per the case's background, the legislature passed the Pakistan Medical Commission Act 2020 on Sept 23, 2020. After two days, the then-prime minister appointed the members of the council by a notification, bypassing the protocol and selection criteria. After that, PMC filed the intracourt appeal. Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan suspended the section of the singlemember bench's judgement to disband the PMC council members while hearing the matter. PMC is led by its Vice President, Mohammad Ali Raza, and the president is not more than a ceremonial head. It is also being considered by the newly-formed federal government to revert Pakistan Medical Commission to Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) The Sindh government reduced the passing marks for the MDCAT; many colleges admitted students on this premise, but later PMC refused, and Supreme Court upheld its decision. The changes are expected after the approval of the federal cabinet. PMC warns students seeking admission to foreign colleges DT Pakistan Report Publisher and CEO Syed Hashim A. Hasan hashim@dental-tribune.com.pk Photo: DT Pakistan SLAMABAD - While 30,000 students attempt to get admission to foreign medical and dental schools each year, the Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) has issued a warning to students about the use of informal agents. The idea was made in light of the fact that over 80 per cent of foreign graduates failed the National Licensing Examination (NLE). PMC warns youngsters not to be fooled by informal agents. PMC spokesperson said in a statement, "In the last two NLE exams for foreign graduates, nearly 2,344 students appeared, and out of those, only 424 students could pass the NLE exam. The low passing percentage is merely due to the wrong selection of medical and dental colleges by the students chasing cheap foreign education, getting influenced by informal agents who directly are responsible for putting their educational carrier at stake for the sake of money, and going to non-verified, substandard educational institutes." He also stated that, due to a lack of resources, hospitals, language barriers, and a shortage of patients and beds, a number of foreign medical and dental institutes awarded degrees without a house job or providing any practical clinical experience, which he asserted was one of the main reasons for foreign graduates' low pass percentage in the NLE exams. He added that all those foreign graduates who complete their respective degrees with house jobs or practical clinical experience easily passed the NLE exams. (Image: Halfpoint/Shutterstock) By Franziska Beier Dental Tribune International O ULU, FINLAND - Dental fear is one of the most common fears in developed countries. Globally, the overall prevalence in children and adolescents is estimated at 23.9%, with preschoolers showing the highest prevalence. In a unique long-term study, researchers from the University of Oulu observed the dental attendance of patients who received chairside dental treatment and anxiety treatment. They found that the treatment of dental fear was more effective at a younger age and led to more regular dental check-ups later in life. The study included 152 patients who had received help with their dental fear alongside dental treatment from primary healthcare dentists at the Clinic for Fearful Dental Patients in Oulu. The aim of this treatment was to alleviate dental fear to such an extent that any following examinations could be administered in a normal dental care environment. During the follow-up period of ten years, the research team investigated the impact of the dental fear treatment on patient behaviour by monitoring the number of dental examinations, emergency visits and missed appointments for these patients. "The low-threshold treatment of dental fear in primary healthcare in conjunction with the dental care of the patient has only been studied to a limited extent. A study on long-term effects has not been published before," said lead author Dr Taina Kankaala, who is from the Department of Cariology, Endodontology and Paediatric Dentistry at the university, in press release. When compared, patients who received treatment at the dental fear clinic at a younger age (between 2 to 10 years) had significantly more dental examinations later on than those treated at an older age (older than 10 years). Success of the dental anxiety treatment was associated with the number of later examinations, but not with emergency visits and missed appointments. Commenting on the results, Dr Kankaala said: "It was also surprising how well those who were successfully treated at the fear clinic coped with dental care in primary healthcare later on." She added that unsuccessful treatment would, as expected, discourage patients from visiting the dentist regularly. A previous study by the research team had found that more than twothirds of 163 patients were successfully treated at the dental fear clinic. This meant that these patients could be treated in primary oral healthcare without any further referrals to the fear clinic. "Patients who are afraid should be identified and their dental fear alleviated at an early age. Fearful patients can be challenging, and their treatment can be burdensome for oral healthcare workers. If the situation is not addressed, contrary to common belief, the child's severe fear of dental care will usually not ease as the child grows," emphasised Dr Kankaala. She continued, saying that dental fear treatment benefits not only the patient but also the dental team and reduces treatment costs in the long term. The study, titled "10-year followup study on attendance pattern after dental treatment in primary oral health care clinic for fearful patients", was published on 13 October 2021 in BMC Oral Health.[11] =>DTI-PDF Mar-Apr 22.FH10 MAR-APR 2022 Pakistan Edition DENTAL TRIBUNE 11 HCMD upgrades endodontic skills of students K ARACHI - The Operative Dentistry Department of Hamdard University Dental Hospital, Hamdard College of Medicine and Dentistry (HCMD), recently conducted an endodontic workshop for final year students.
