AAP honors Dr. Oded Bahat with Master Clinician Award
n The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) honored Dr. Oded
Bahat with the Master Clinician
Award at a ceremony held during the
annual conference on Saturday.
“Oded is, without question, one of
the most innovative thinkers of our
generation,” said Dennis P. Tarnow,
DDS, clinical professor and director
of implant education at Columbia University’s College of Dental Medicine.
The Master Clinician Award is presented to a member who demonstrates

consistent clinical excellence and has
continuously shared his research
with others in the specialty.
Bahat is a pioneer in dental implantology who championed his findings
that, for many people, the jawbone
continues to grow throughout your
life.
This research caused practitioners
world-wide to change their approach
to implant placement as originally
the jawbone and surrounding craniofacial anatomy was considered

unchanging after a person matures.
Bahat also developed a protocol to
take craniofacial growth into account
before placing implants that is now
widely accepted.
“[Bahat’s] ideas and contributions
regarding the growth and development of dentition with implantsupported restorations have awakened all practitioners,” said Stuart J.
Froum, DDS, past president of the AAP.

Results from the World Workshop on the Classification
of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions
n In conjunction with the European
Federation of Periodontology (EFP),
the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) hosted the World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and
Conditions from Nov. 9-11, 2017, at the
Gleacher Center in Chicago.
More than 100 international
researchers, educators and clinicians
gathered there to review the latest
literature and come to consensus on
up-to-date guidelines for periodontal
and peri-implant disease diagnosis
and definition.
Participants conducted literature
reviews, established case definitions
and deliberated diagnostic considerations for the following topic areas:
periodontal health and gingival diseases and conditions; periodontitis;
developmental and acquired conditions and periodontal manifestations
of systemic conditions; and periimplant diseases and conditions.
The inclusion of peri-implant diseases and conditions within periAD

The session, ‘Results from the World
Workshop on the Classification of
Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases
and Conditions,’ will take place from
10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Monday. Jack
Caton will moderate, and the speakers will be Gary Armitage, Kenneth S.
Kornman and Panos N. Papapanou. The
session is free but tickets are required
to attend.

odontal disease classifications was a
first, accommodating for what scientists and practitioners have come to
understand about implant dentistry.
“Since the last World Workshop
was held in 1999, periodontics has
made notable advancements in the
treatment and diagnosis of periodontal disease. The 2017 workshop
intended to account for what we’ve
learned in the last 18 years and help
standardize the specialty’s definition
of disease,” said Dr. Steven R. Daniel
of the AAP shortly after the workshop

concluded. “Our collaboration with
the EFP and periodontists from all
over the world will work to positively
shape the quality of patient care globally.”
Now it is time to release the findings from that workshop for the
industry to hear.
On Monday, from 10:45 a.m. to
12:15 p.m., members of the 2017
World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant
Diseases and Conditions will discuss
findings from the recently updated
disease classification. This ticketed
event will highlight the newly developed staging and grading model for
classification as well as the update’s
implications on patient care and dental education.
The new classification reflects
what has been expertly reviewed
today about the diseases and attempts
to Improve clinicians’ level of comprehension and appreciation of disease
progression, clarify gingival health
and mucogingival conditions and

address peri-implant diseases for the
first time and eliminate overlap of former disease categories and achieve
more diagnostic precision.
By attending the session, attendees
can learn how worldwide consensus
was reached and how the new classification differs from the 1999 version; familiarize themselves with an
innovative model for identifying and
diagnosing periodontal diseases that
introduces a multi-dimensional staging and grading system, similar to
the method used in oncology; gain an
appreciation for the complex nature
of each patient and his/her individual
response to treatment; and describe
what new dental students will be
taught about identifying and classifying periodontitis in their patients.
The 2017 World Workshop was the
second recent collaboration of the
EFP and AAP. The groups’ joint workshop on periodontitis and systemic
disease in 2012 was a major milestone
in the specialty’s understanding of
the perio-systemic link.

to the company.
alloOss Allograft is offered in particulate, block and putty. It is a safe,
predictable and effective solution
for providing a scaffolding for cell
ingrowth and promoting the growth
of new bone, the company asserts.
alloOss is recommended for:

Implantmed SI-1015:
Respect for your needs
By W&H Staff
n W&H introduced the Implantmed
surgical unit in 2001. The company
asserts it’s a high-quality device —
safe, simple to use with a high degree
of precision and flexible application
options.
The new generation builds on those
tried-and-tested features and adds
an array of all new benefits: a color
touchscreen interface, a wireless foot
pedal, shorter/lighter and more powerful motor with LED+ capability and
a unique ISQ module for assessing the
stability of an implant.
W&H Implantmed SI-1015 supports
practitioners for both oral surgery
and implantology.

Improved safety

Immediate load … early load … or the
conventional route?
Deciding on the best time for loading implants is becoming more complex when trying to take into account
all of a patient’s risk factors.
According to the company, the
integrated automatic thread-cutter
function and precise torque control
actively helps the operator during
implant placement — especially in
dense bone. Using the documentation
function stores all parameters, the
implant insertion torque/time graph,
optional ISQ measurement data, documentation ID and tooth position on a
USB stick for patient records.
As an option, the W&H Osstell ISQ
(Implant Stability Quotient) module
for the Implantmed SI-1015 is a noninvasive measuring system of primary stability/osseointegration.
Combining the detailed insertion
torque graph with the ISQ measurement reduces risk in deciding optimum loading time and assists in monitoring osseointegration of an implant.

Simplicity: New color
touchscreen user interface
and redesigned pump

The new Implantmed SI-1015’s user
interface helps the practice team to
streamline. A high-tech color touchscreen with a tempered glass surface
makes it easy to operate and disinfect,
according to the company. The navigation system and the customizable
programs allow the operator to focus
on the surgery.

The Implantmed can be customized for up to six individual users for
reduced risk in group practices using
multiple implant brands and their
individual protocols.
A redesigned coolant pump
means the irrigation tubing can now
be loaded faster under sterile conditions.

Precise: Powerful motor and
new surgical handpieces
with LED+

In its class, the new motor is the

strongest (6.2 Ncm), lightest and
shortest, the company asserts, adding
that the ergonomic shape and balance
combined with a W&H handpiece can
reduce operator physical strain. Five
new short surgical handpieces with
LED+ fully illuminate, regardless of
the motor speed.

Flexibility: Wireless
multi-functional, multi-device

Try the Silhouette Nasal Mask for
predictable nitrous oxide analgesia
By Porter Instrument Staff
n Imagine a nasal hood that does
not obstruct access to the oral cavity.
Imagine a nasal hood that is so lightweight the patient barely notices it.
Imagine a nasal hood that delivers
and scavenges nitrous oxide more
efficiently than any other nasal hood.
Imagine a nasal hood that provides
predictable results for the dentist and
a pleasant experience for the patient.
The imagining is over. The Silhouette Nasal Mask is a single-patient use
disposable nasal mask and circuit.
Featuring four size options (pediatric,
small, medium and large), the Silhouette is designed with the lowest possible profile, making it easier for you
to work around.
Silhouette has an adhesive strip
for the bridge of the patient’s nose —
securing the mask in place. This elimAD

inates gas flowing into the patient’s
eyes and more effectively scavenges
the exhaled gas, addressing the concern of health-care provider safety.
Infrared videos demonstrating this
efficiency can be viewed on the Porter website at www.porterinstrument.

Silhouette also allows for the efficient and effective administration

of nitrous oxide, creating a more
predictable analgesic experience for
each patient.
As a single-use disposable product
(both the mask and 36-inch tubing),
set up and room turnover times can
be improved. There is also less time
needed for infection control protocols (compared with standard nitrous
breathing circuits).

Headlights: Now in high-definition
By Designs for Vision Staff
n Designs for Vision is showing off
an advanced photonic design that
provides uniform light distribution
with maximum intensity.
The patent-pending headlights
optically focus the light from the LED
to provide 45 percent more light with
uniform distribution.
The LED DayLite® Micro HDi™
combines
the
high-definition
imaging with a very lightweight
headlight in combination with the
Micro power pack, according to the
company, which says the Micro power
pack is the lightest and smallest available. The complete unit includes two
power packs, and each power pack
can run up to 10 hours.
Designs for Vision has also added
the high-definition imaging to LED
DayLite WireLess Mini HDi, providing a lightweight, cordless solution
with light intensity comparable to
many corded headlights. You can

meet your preference, and all HDi
headlights will illuminate the entire
oral cavity.
Designs for Vision’s WireLess headlights free you from being tethered
to a battery pack. The simple modular designs uncouple the headlights
from a specific frame or single pair of
loupes.
Prior technology married a cordless light to one pair of loupes via a

cumbersome integration of the batteries and electronics into the frame.
The compact design of the LED
DayLite WireLess headlights are independent of any frame/loupes.
In addition, Designs for Vision is
also featuring the REALITY 5-star
rated The Micro 3.5EF Scopes, which
utilize a revolutionary optical design
that reduces the size of the prismatic
telescope by 50 percent and reduces

the weight by 40 percent while providing an expanded-field, full oral cavity
view at 3.5x magnification.
Building on the award-winning
design, the newest addition to the
Micro Series line is the Micro 4.5EF
Scopes. These scopes reduce both the
size and weight of the telescopes by
44 percent.

Meisinger to host its 9th
High Altitude Symposium
Event to take place
in Vail, Colo., from
Jan. 30 to Feb. 2
By Meisinger Staff
n While it is impossible to reduce
the wide range of procedures and
topics in the oral surgery field to a
simple catchphrase, there is value in
the guiding principle of “Tissue is the
issue, but bone sets the tone.”
From implantology to surgery,
meticulous attention to treatment of
bone is key to a successful procedure. This is why, in 2002, Meisinger
unveiled the Bone Management®
product line, which consists of coordinated systems that enable controlled
optimization of various surgical procedures. Developed in collaboration
with scientists and practitioners,
the clear, methodical procedures for
these systems foster ease of use for
a large range of dental professionals.
The term “Bone Management”
refers not simply to a technique but
rather to a mindset of surgical guidelines. While the end goal of prosthetics is incredibly important, the Bone
Management approach also focuses
on ensuring minimally invasive procedures with long-term success.
To continue making this Bone
Management mindset accessible to
all dental professionals, Meisinger
launched the annual High Altitude
Comprehensive Implant Symposium
(HACIS) — an entire symposium dedicated to the ins and outs of implantology. For the past eight years, HACIS
has been bringing together worldrenowned speakers on Bone Management topics in a combination of
lectures, hands-on workshops, worldclass skiing and fun for all.
This winter’s symposium will
explore all aspects of Bone Management in implantology — from initial
planning to final restoration and everything in between. Topics covered
will include: implant treatment planning, site preparation, sinus elevation, sandwich bone augmentation,
full arch immediate reconstruction,
esthetic zone implants, digital technology in implant surgery and more.
