Women leading Pakistan’s
dentistry revolution
By Dr Kainat Batool
Over the past few decades, Pakistan’s dental
profession has undergone remarkable growth,
with women driving this transformation despite
gender bias and cultural constraints. Female
dental professionals are not only overcoming
barriers but are also reshaping oral healthcare,
bringing fresh perspectives and accelerating
the industry’s development.
Traditionally, cultural norms have restricted
women’s career choices, presenting a significant
challenge for aspiring female dentists.
However, greater access to higher education
and increased awareness of medical careers
have inspired many women to pursue dentistry.
These trailblazers are more than just skilled
practitioners; they are role models, showing
younger generations that longstanding
obstacles can be surmounted. Their resilience
is a testament to the profound impact they
have on communities and future healthcare
professionals.
Women in dentistry are making significant
contributions across public and private
sectors. From establishing clinics to engaging
in research and academia, they play a crucial
role in expanding access to oral healthcare
countrywide, especially in rural areas, where
healthcare facilities are often scarce. The
presence of female dentists encourages more
women to seek treatment, thereby creating a
more inclusive healthcare environment.

Creative DT Pakistan

An encouraging trend is the rise of women
specializing in postgraduate dental programs,
entering fields such as orthodontics,
prosthodontics, and oral surgery—traditionally
dominated by men. As these women ascend to
leadership positions, they bring diversity and
innovation to these specialties.
Nevertheless,
female
dentists
face
ongoing challenges, including gender-based
discrimination and the struggle to balance
career demands with family responsibilities in
a male-dominated field. Despite these hurdles,

their determination is leading to a growing
number of female leaders in dental associations
and educational institutions across the country.
As more women enter the profession and
assume leadership roles, they are shaping
a future where dentistry in Pakistan is more
diverse and inclusive. Their contributions are
essential for evolving oral healthcare to meet
the needs of a changing society. By breaking
barriers and setting new standards, women
in dentistry are paving the way for future
generations.

PMDC, health
ministry initiative
to support medical
students abroad
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Medical and Dental
Council (PMDC) and the Ministry of National
Health Services, Regulations & Coordination
(NHSRC) have unveiled an initiative aimed at
integrating Pakistani students pursuing medical
and dental studies abroad into country’s
healthcare system on their return.
Following a recent meeting, both bodies
have agreed on a unified approach to help
these students in pursuing their studies abroad
while ensuring the efficient use of Pakistan’s
financial resources.
It was decided that in the 2025-26 academic
year, the PMDC and the ministry will implement
new guidelines to facilitate the integration of
foreign-trained professionals into Pakistan’s
healthcare system.
These measures are intended to help students
avoid enrolling in institutions with substandard
academic performance and ensure a smooth
transition upon their return to Pakistan.
The PMDC will collaborate closely with
Pakistani diplomatic missions to ensure that
foreign universities meet the required criteria.
For the 2024-25 academic year, Pakistani
students seeking admission to international
medical and dental schools must meet specific
requirements, including holding a valid Multiple
Entry Visa, achieving a minimum of 60pc in F.Sc
Pre-Medical, or scoring at least 550 marks in
each SAT-II subject or 50pc in foreign MCAT/
UCAT exams. Additionally, they must secure a
minimum of 50pc in the MDCAT conducted in
Pakistan, with results valid for three years.
It’s crucial that the foreign institution is
recognized by the PMDC, particularly for
enrollments before the 2024-25 academic year.
The medical qualification must come from a
WFME-accredited institution, and students
must obtain a PMDC Student Registration
Certificate before beginning their studies
abroad.
They will also be required to complete at
least 6,200 hours of study over five years,
maintaining an 80pc attendance rate.
For the students studying in non-Englishspeaking countries, six months of language
training is mandatory. Moreover, passing
the National Registration Examination (NRE)
is essential for full PMDC registration after
qualification.
Students must also provide their residence
and contact details in their host country before
departure.
This policy aims to ensure that Pakistani
students abroad achieve high educational
standards and are well-prepared to contribute
to Pakistan’s healthcare system upon their
return. –PR

Role of technology in shaping
dentistry’s future
By Dr Mahnoor Mohsin
Driven
by
technological
advancements,
the
field
of dentistry has witnessed
a transformation that was
unimaginable just a few decades
ago. From digital scanners to AIassisted diagnoses and virtual
consultations, new tools are
reshaping patient care.
However,
while
these
developments are promising, they
also raise an important question: Is
technology genuinely enhancing
dental care, or are there downsides
that must be considered?
The benefits of digital tools in
dentistry are evident. Technologies
such as digital impressions and 3D
printing have made treatments
faster and more comfortable,
enabling services like same-day
crowns.
AI-powered diagnostics can
detect issues like caries and
periodontal disease at an early
stage, allowing for more accurate
treatment and reducing the
need for multiple visits, which is
advantageous for both patients
and practitioners.
Additionally, the rise of teledentistry has expanded access to
dental care, particularly for those
living in remote or underserved
areas, by providing virtual

consultations that can address
concerns without requiring a trip
to the dental clinic.
However, these technological
advances come with challenges.
The cost of high-tech equipment
can be prohibitive for smaller
practices, potentially creating a
divide between those with access
to state-of-the-art care and those
without. There is also the risk of
over-reliance on technology; while
AI and digital tools offer valuable
support, they cannot replace the

3D printing of dental models, conducted by
Dr Salahuddin and Dr Faisal. A special session
on leadership in dentistry and emotional
intelligence was also held.
One of the event’s most engaging activities
was the Dental Olympics, where students
from across Pakistan competed in dental
challenges.
Day two kicked off with the Dental Startup
Competition, offering participants a platform

and Haseeb Uddin, CTO of Authentik. The
presentations were evaluated for their
potential contribution to the Nation’s
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and

expertise and clinical judgment
of a skilled dentist. Technology
should enhance, not overshadow,
the human element of patient
care.
Data privacy is another concern,
as storing dental records online
poses risks to sensitive patient
information. With the widespread
adoption of these technologies,
dental education must evolve to
keep pace.
Aspiring dentists will need
to be proficient not only in

advancements in dentistry.
Prizes were awarded, with Rs50,000 for first
place and Rs30,000 for the runner-up, both
sponsored by Authentik Pakistan. The contest
offered a platform for emerging talent to
showcase their entrepreneurial creativity,
this competition was a highlight for aspiring
dental entrepreneurs.
Specialised workshops followed, including
a session on Clear Aligner Technology by
industry leaders ClearPath and a dental
photography workshop by Dr Mansur Ahmed.
A career counseling session led by experts
such as Dr Kashif Ikram and Dr Ayesha Hanif
offered valuable advice on navigating the
future of dentistry.
A panel discussion titled “Venturing

care and entrepreneurial opportunities.

traditional clinical skills but also
in using the latest innovations.
Striking the right balance between
technological competence and
hands-on patient care will be
crucial for maintaining high
standards in the field.
While technology holds the
potential to significantly improve
dental care, it is accompanied
by unique challenges. To ensure
it benefits both patients and
practitioners, a cautious approach
is necessary.

Panelists included Professor Dr Navid Rashid
Qureshi, Professor Dr Yawar Ali Abdi, and
Dr Ninette Banday, among others, who
emphasized the importance of mentorship
and continuous learning in fostering growth.
The congress also hosted a presentation by
prominent dentist and social media influencer
Dr Syed Muhammad Faizan, titled “Stand
Out in the Crowd: Using Social Media for
Professional Development.” Dr Faizan shared
strategies for leveraging social media to build
an authentic online presence and stressed the
importance of addressing skill gaps through
mentorship and further training.
The event concluded with a Trade Expo,
where sponsors like Medangle, Quice, and
Universal Dental Supply showcased the

AI set to transform X-Ray
analysis in urgent care

Creative Common

By Aeman Khalil
Exciting
advancements
in
artificial
intelligence (AI) are on the horizon for the
healthcare sector, particularly in urgent care.
Research from the National Institute for
Health and Care Excellence (NICE) indicates
that AI technology could significantly
reduce the number of missed fractures and
broken bones when analyzing X-rays. This
promising development aims to ease the
burden on healthcare professionals while
improving patient outcomes.
Four AI tools are poised to be
recommended for use across urgent
care facilities in England, pending further
evidence collection on their effectiveness.
These tools are designed to work in tandem
with healthcare professionals, ensuring
that every X-ray is thoroughly reviewed by
trained experts.

Currently, broken bones go undetected in
3-10% of cases—this marks one of the most
common diagnostic errors in emergency
departments. The situation is compounded
by a shortage of radiologists and
radiographers, with vacancy rates sitting at
12.5% and 15%, respectively, as highlighted
in the NHS’s long-term plan.
Mark Chapman, director of health
technology at NICE, emphasized the
advantages of integrating AI into clinical
practice. “These AI technologies are safe to
use and could spot fractures that humans
might miss, given the pressure and demands
these professional groups work under,”
he explained. By enhancing diagnostic
accuracy, AI has the potential to accelerate
the diagnostic process and decrease the
need for follow-up appointments resulting
from missed fractures.

NICE reassured that the integration of AI
is unlikely to increase incorrect diagnoses
or unnecessary referrals to fracture clinics.
Each X-ray will always be evaluated by a
radiologist, ensuring a double-check system
that enhances patient safety.
The potential applications of AI in
healthcare are vast. Beyond fracture
detection, AI is already being utilized to
identify early signs of breast cancer, assess
heart attack risk, and even predict future
pandemics.
A public consultation on the draft NICE
guidance regarding the use of AI in urgent
care is currently underway, with feedback
welcomed until November 5. As these
technologies continue to develop, the future
of urgent care looks promising, paving the
way for quicker, more accurate diagnoses
and improved patient care.
