AAID heads to Las Vegas
for 72nd annual event

T
here will be more than just casinos and world-famous shows to
entertain you if you’re heading
to Las Vegas for the American
Academy of Implant Dentistry’s annual
convention, taking place this year from
Nov. 1 to 4 at Caesars Palace. There will
also be C.E. opportunities, dozens upon
dozens of new products and the chance
to join hundreds of your friends and colleagues in a variety of networking and
social events.
This year’s meeting will feature dozens
of workshops and guest speakers to help
you and your office team take your practice to the next level.
One of the highlights is the Implant
World Expo taking place Thursday and
Friday in the exhibit hall. There you will
have a chance to see the latest implant
products, explore new resources for your
office and get information to help your
patients’ needs. Food and beverages will
also be available as well as the chance to
get special AAID conference discounts
on products and services.
More than 100 companies will be
showcasing their products, and you’ll
have a chance to see live demonstrations. The Implant World Expo is also a
great opportunity for you to meet new
friends and reconnect with old ones.
If you get hungry, the AAID has you
covered — they are offering a free lunch
both days.
If you’re looking to top off your continuing education credits, the AAID conference is the spot for you. Participants
can earn up to 20 C.E. credits over the
four-day event. Multiple lectures and
guest speakers will give you the chance
to earn those credits.
Event organizers have set up a variety
of professional guest speakers on a wide
range of implant topics. Some of those
include surgical techniques such as suturing, an introduction to minimal and
moderate sedation and management of

few.
Don’t forget about your team at this
year’s event. The AAID Dental Implant
Team program features education for
dental hygienists, assistants, administrative and laboratory staff. It is personalized for each member so that your
entire practice can become stronger and
better fill your patients’ needs.
There will be several receptions taking
place throughout the event.
On Friday, there is the Women in Dentistry reception from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30,
and on Saturday join your friends and
colleagues for the President’s Celebra-
tion, taking place from 6 p.m. to midnight.

1. How long have you been using
Navident UNO (Navident’s first system)
and when did you receive your Navident
EVO (Navident’s newest system)?
I started using Navident UNO in 2019,
and I was very satisfied.
I received EVO at the beginning of
2023 and kept the UNO system for three
months in my clinic as a precaution. I
wanted to make sure that EVO worked
perfectly.
I was pleasantly surprised by EVO’s
performance and the software’s userfriendliness.
Ninety-five percent of implant surgeries are now performed with EVO.
2. What prompted you to buy the
upgrade?
The technical improvements in EVO vs.
UNO, such as: impression registration,
autoclavable parts that are smaller and
lighter, and especially the handpiece
tracker, which has no blank spots for the
Navident EVO camera — which was a
major flaw on the Navident UNO.
The protocol for complete edentulous
cases using impression registration,
without the need for osteosynthesis
screws, played a positive role in my decision.
Future developments in EVO also convinced me. The forthcoming possibility
of controlling the implantology engine
and photogrammetric impression taking were also important factors in my
decision.

3. How many cases have you
performed with each system?
Estimated.
I estimate having carried out at least
150 clinical cases with Navident UNO,
and to date I’ve carried out 70 clinical
cases with Navident EVO. This translates
to more than 500 implants placed with
Navident.
4. What are your impressions of the
improvements made to the EVO
system?
1. Speed and user-friendliness of the
planning software. For example, with
Navident UNO, I used to carry out an implant pre-study on Simplant, and since
I’ve got EVO, I’ve totally abandoned this
pre-study.
I now carry out the study directly on
EVO.
2. Ease of STL matching, either from
the optical impression or from a study
of the prosthetic project by the laboratory. It only takes a few seconds!
3. Impression registration eliminates
the need for tracing (saving one to two
minutes) and the need to place osteosynthesis screws in the case of the completely edentulous or in the case of immediate implant extraction
5 . Would you recommend it to a
colleague and why?
I would simply say that the future lies
in dynamically guided surgery! Implant
placement without planning and dynamic assistance would be like driving
a car without GPS, an airbag or a braking
assistant.
The time lag between planning and
dynamic guided surgery is negligible.

Twenty-four years ago, when I tried to
convince my colleagues that the use of
a static guide would be the future, I was
preaching to the choir.
Today, all young practitioners use static guidance ...! In fact, they’re 20 years
behind the times ...!
Today, we need to invest in dynamic
guidance, which allows a rapid transition from planning to surgery and
avoids the use of highly polluting and
expensive resins. Partial robotization of

Nexus iOS: A complete digital
solution for full-arch rehabilitation

Nexus iOS is a fully digital full-arch
solution, forming an end-to-end prosthetic solution from the first scan to
the final patient prosthesis. Nexus iOS
requires only a validated intraoral scanner and a Nexus Scan Gauge Kit.
The search for an accurate method
of full-arch implant capture has been a
continual point of debate amongst implant dentistry professionals, particularly in relation to Intraoral scanning
(IOS)1.
New technologies adapted to the dentistry field, such as photogrammetry,
have sought to solve these challenges;
however, they often carry significant investment and offer just one part of the
puzzle.
Nexus iOS utilises existing IOS technology with a new tool, one that at first
glance shares similarities with conventional scan bodies yet is significantly
more sophisticated. These are known as
Scan Gauges.

How does Nexus iOS work?
To understand how Nexus iOS works,
first, we need to understand why conventional scan bodies and IOS have not
rendered consistent results when performing full-arch scans. IOS works by
3-D mapping a patient’s tissue and dentition via image capture and software
algorithms that stitch image data into a
three-dimensional model.
The function of translating 2-D images into 3-D models is where IOS has the
potential to introduce inaccuracies2.
This is, in part, due to the mouth being an ever-changing environment —
soft tissue movement, saliva and other
changing features make the “stitching”
of scanner data difficult as there are
limited consistent landmarks for the algorithms in IO scanners to use as points
of reference. This is made significantly
worse when patients have no dentition
at all, only implants, often spread evenly across the arch, leaving large gaps of
soft tissue to scan.
Conventional Scan Bodies offer some
consistencies; however, they do not cover the span of the arch, with artificial
software stitching still encountering
tissue-only scanning surfaces.
One of the ways Nexus iOS overcomes
this issue is by using Scan Gauges that
“bridge” the gaps between implant sites,
offering IO scanners consistent landmarks when scanning across the arch,
limiting tissue-stitching and thereby
increasing the likelihood of true scan
data.

What is the outcome of using
Nexus iOS?

Using an intraoral scanner and a Nexus
Scan Gauge Kit, a series of scans and
patient headshots are performed to attain digital references of the patient’s
implant positions, bite and esthetic considerations.
This data is uploaded to the Nexus online cloud platform, and a titanium barretained prosthesis is ordered.

clinician is happy with the setup. A 3-D
printed try-in is available prior to going
