DUBAI: The 28th UAE International Dental
Conference and Arab Dental Exhibition
(AEEDC Dubai 2024) concluded on a high
note, with trade agreements totaling AED19
billion.
AEEDC Dubai is organized annually by
INDEX Conferences and Exhibitions Org.
LLC, supported by various healthcare
organizations and authorities, including the
Dubai Health Authority and the Scientific
Global Dental Alliance.
Regarded as a premier event in the
global dental and oral health industry, the
conference and exhibition attracted a large
audience, featuring 5,328 brands represented
by 3,924 international companies specializing
in oral health supplies and dental technology.
On the third day of the event, the Global
Scientific Dental Alliance (GSDA) hosted its
21st annual meeting amidst AEEDC Dubai

2024, drawing 184 member organizations and
383 representatives from across the globe.
Representatives of prestigious universities
and dental colleges worldwide also attended
the event.
During the moot, the Global Dental Alliance
launched the “GSDA 2024 Declaration,”
a collective initiative aimed at providing
essential guidelines, recommendations, and
solutions to drive future innovations and
improvements across eight main pillars.
Dr Abdulsalam Al Madani, PAM Roving
Ambassador for the Gulf Cooperation Council
Region and Executive Chairman for AEEDC
Dubai and the GSDA, commended the annual
event’s success, emphasizing the importance
of education and scientific research in
advancing dental and oral health sectors.
Dr Al Madani invited the scientific bodies
and organizations specializing in dentistry
to engage in this global forum annually,
highlighting
the
sector’s
consistent

development and advancement.
Chaired by Professor Abdullah Al
Shammery, Scientific Chairman of the GSDA
and chairman of the Board of Trustees at
Riyadh Elm University, the moot included
notable figures from the dental community.
Anas Al Madani, Vice Chairman and Group
CEO of INDEX Holding, reflected on the
future outlook of AEEDC Dubai, emphasizing
the role of artificial intelligence in the dental
and digital transformation sectors.
The GSDA, a non-profit organization
operating under the International Congress
for Health Specialties (ICHS), works yearround to enhance professional standards in
the dental and oral health sector.
Furthermore, the ICHS, a globally
recognized platform, empowers professionals
in medicine and healthcare, addressing
challenges through initiatives supporting
medical education, research, innovation, and
excellence in healthcare.

Professor Dr Arshad Hasan receives
PhD in operative dentistry

KARACHI: Professor Dr Arshad
Hassan was honoured with a PhD
degree in Operative Dentistry
during the 13th Convocation of
Dow University of Health Sciences
(DUHS).
Currently
serving
as
the
principal at Dow Dental College,
Professor Dr Arshad is a graduate
of KMDC. He earned his FCPS in
Operative Dentistry from CPSP and
subsequently achieved his PhD
degree from DUHS.
His career began as a
demonstrator at KMDC, and he
ascended to positions such as
senior registrar, professor, and
Head of Operative Dentistry at
Hamdard University.
Dr Arshad’s association with
Dow Dental College includes
serving as the administrative head
of the Endodontic and Restorative
Dentistry Unit. He also supervised
the MDS Operative Dentistry
programme and held key roles
on various committees at the
Dow University, including the

KARACHI: Altamash Institute of
Dental Medicine (AIDM) Karachi
recently held its convocation
ceremony at the Pearl Continental
(PC) here, awarding Bachelor of
Dental Surgery (BDS) degrees to
355 graduates from five batches,
besides certificates of merit and
medals to the position-holders.
The ceremony was presided
over
by
three
eminent
personalities: Chief of the Naval
Staff, Admiral Naveed Ashraf
NI(M) TBt; Vice Chancellor of
Jinnah Sindh Medical University,
Karachi, Professor Dr. Amjad
Siraj Memon and President of
the College of Physicians and
Surgeons Pakistan, Prof. Dr.
Khalid Masud Gondal (Sitarae-Imtiaz & Presidential Pride of

Performance). The attendance of
senior officials from the Pakistan
Navy, the Registrar of Jinnah
Sindh Medical University, and
notable figures from the medical,
dental, and allied health sciences
communities added prestige to
the event.
In his welcoming address,
Professor
Dr
Mohammed
Hasnain Sakrani, Principal of
AIDM, expressed pleasure and
satisfaction at the rapid growth
of AIDM into one of the country’s
most prestigious institutes. He
commended the initiation of
Postgraduate FCPS programs in
Dental Sciences.

PADS holds dental camp for autistic kids at ARCL
LAHORE: The Prophylaxis Committee of the
Pakistan Association of Dental Students (PADS)
recently organized a dental camp at the Autism
Resources Centre Lahore (ARCL), where budding
dental professional also had an insight into
understading issues faced by autistic children and
built connections with them.
The camp, conducted by 15 volunteers wasn’t
solely focused on the number of dental procedures
performed, but on creating an inclusive and
welcoming environment for the autistic kids. The
volunteers actively participated in specialized
training sessions, equipping themselves with skills

to communicate and socialize effectively with these
children. This personalized approach ensured that

each child received not just dental care but a genuinely
supportive experience tailored to their unique needs.
The event featured interactive activities including
games, story-telling and shared moments of joy that
became the means through which volunteers and
children bridged gaps and built bonds. It was also a
lesson in empathy, as volunteers learned to navigate
the intricacies of interacting with autistic children.
The camp concluded with a ceremony where
certificates were awarded not only for participation
but also for the commitment each volunteer
demonstrated in learning how to connect with and

UCMD team holds oral health
camps at 20 schools in Lahore
LAHORE:
The
Department
of Community & Preventive
Dentistry at the University
College of Medicine and Dentistry
(UCMD), The University of Lahore
(UOL), marked Oral Health Week,
in collaboration with Colgate,
Palmolive, Pakistan, featuring oral
health camps, screenings, in 20
schools of Lahore.
The primary aim of the oral health
camps was to educate students
and the community about the
importance of maintaining good
oral hygiene from an early age.
Each day, teams comprising
second-year
BDS
students,
house surgeons, and appointed
team leaders from UCD Faculty,
including Dr Seema Shafeeq, Dr
Khaloud Tariq, Dr Zunaira Iqbal,
Dr. Naiha Muzamil, Dr. Rayyan
Sameer, Dr. Aqsa Arif, and Dr.
Ahmad Azhar, visited three
schools, examining an average of
150-plus students at each facility.

techniques, the significance of
flossing, the impact of dietary

people benefit from Colgate
Pakistan’s oral health drive
KARACHI: Reaffirming its commitment to
promoting oral health and wellness, Colgate
Pakistan achieved remarkable success during
the nationwide Colgate Oral Health Weeks
2023 through a fruitful collaboration with
Pakistan’s esteemed dental health community,
benefitting over half a million people.
The Colgate Oral Health Weeks spanned 21
major cities across Pakistan, under the theme
‘Keep Pakistan Smiling.’ This campaign featured
a wide range of activities aimed at creating
awareness and promoting better oral health
standards countrywide.
The core message emphasized the vital role
of maintaining a healthy mouth in achieving
overall well-being for the entire population.
During
the
week-long
activities,
complimentary dental check-ups were
conducted, and informative literature was
provided at partner institutions throughout
Pakistan, emphasizing the significance of
optimal oral health for everyone. The efforts
aimed to spread awareness and encourage
proactive steps towards improving oral hygiene,
ensuring a brighter and healthier future for all.
The ‘Keep Pakistan Smiling’ campaign
focused on preventive dentistry, advocating a
proactive approach to maintaining oral health
through regular care and early intervention.
The activities included thorough brushing,
consistent flossing, and periodic professional
dental cleanings and check-ups, significantly
reducing the likelihood of future dental
problems.

Colgate’s commitment to providing free
dental check-ups to people from various
backgrounds was at the heart of the campaign.
Collaborating closely with Pakistan’s dental
fraternity, the campaign provided over half a
million individuals with free dental check-ups
at more than 750 locations, including institutes,
hospitals, clinics, and schools.
With nearly 40 years of service in Pakistan,

Colgate continues to be a trusted icon in oral
health. The campaign stands as a celebration
of radiant smiles and a testament to the pivotal
role oral hygiene plays in individual well-being.

KARACHI: The Altamash Institute
of Dental Medicine (AIDM) recently
marked its Third Annual Research Day
by organising podium presentation and
poster contests among outstanding
students of six universities (including
AIDM)
to
promote
innovation,
discovery, and collaboration.
The Third Annual Research Day
marked a triumphant celebration of
innovation, discovery, and fruitful
collaboration. This event commenced
with an inaugural address by our
esteemed chief guest, Prof. Dr. Ambreen
Afzal, Dean of Academics at AIDM, and
Councillor at CPSP.
The significance of this occasion was
further amplified by the presence of
distinguished figures, including Prof. Dr.
Hasnain Sakrani, Principal of AIDM, Prof.
Dr. Mohammad Altamash, President of
AIDM, and Dr. Shaheena Altamash, our
esteemed Chief Executive. Alongside
them, Dr. Sara Altamash graced the
event with her esteemed presence.
The event showcased diverse and
groundbreaking researches conducted

the event.

Similarly, the poster competition was
won by Dr Baynita Khalid, Dr Nabeeha
Naqvi and Dr Laveeza Kashif from
Bahria University and Dental College,
Health Sciences whereas Dr Maria
Ghani from AIDM was declared runner
up. A momentous highlight of the day
was the distribution of shields to the
outstanding participants and victors of
the event, a gesture that underscored

researchers and their contributions to

academic excellence.

‘Wall of Alumni’
KARACHI: The Hamdard University Dental Hospital

FJDC pioneers Generative
AI course for healthcare
advancement

KARACHI: The Fatima Jinnah Dental College
(FJDC) is at the forefront of launching its
groundbreaking programme -- Certified
Generative AI for Healthcare and Medicine
Specialization – for individuals of all ages
and backgrounds, interested in mastering
the practical applications of generative
artificial intelligence (AI) in the healthcare
sector.
Teaming up with renowned AI experts,
including Mr Zia Ullah Khan (CEO of
Panacloud (Pvt.) Ltd. and Voluntary COO at
PIAIC) and his team, FJDC has developed a
comprehensive 6-month programme.
Designed to empower participants with
the knowledge and skills required to thrive
in the AI-driven healthcare landscape, the
programme consists of two quarters, each
covering two modules, and is conducted
every Saturday, providing maximum
flexibility for busy professionals and
students.
The programme kicked off with an
engaging Open House and Orientation
Day, attracting over 200 enthusiastic
attendees. The event featuring thoughtprovoking presentations by leading experts,
interactive Q&A sessions, and inspiring
speeches from Dr Hussain Askary (CEO and
Community Dentistry Department Head)
and Dr Baqar Askary (Chairman and Head
of Institute at FJDC).
Dr Askary shared his outlook for the
course, highlighting its potential to
revolutionise the field of dentistry by
equipping individuals with the tools
to integrate cutting-edge generative
AI technology into their practice. He
encouraged participants to stay motivated
and embrace the positive changes that AI

will bring to the healthcare industry.
The interactive Q&A sessions allowed the
participants to engage with experts, gaining
deeper insights into the course content and
the future of AI in dentistry.
In his speech, Dr Askary thanked the
collaboration partners, sharing his extensive
knowledge and personal experiences
with major technological advancements.
Drawing parallels between the moon
landing and the current AI revolution, he
concluded by underscoring the immense
potential of AI to transform dentistry and
enhance patient care.
He said it is not merely a course; it’s a
movement; an opportunity to be part of a
revolution, to lead innovation, and to shape
the future of dentistry. With renowned
collaborators, an interactive learning

application, this course is poised to become

The course also offered scholarships for
candidates from diverse government/private

MDC holds seminar
on research proposal
development in Mirpurkhas
MIRPURKHAS: An informative seminar focusing
on research proposal development was recently
organized at the Muhammad Dental College’s
Community Dentistry Department in Mirpurkhas.
The seminar, aimed at faculty and student
development, featured guest speaker Dr Sikander,
whose expertise in the field provided valuable
insights into effective research methodologies.
Skillfully facilitated by Dr Amir Akbar Shaikh,
Dr Doha Rajar, and Dr Benish, the event delved
into various aspects of research, including
methodologies, ethical considerations, and
proposal structuring.
At the seminar, the attendees were provided
an opportunity to refine their research proposals,
thereby nurturing a culture of academic
excellence within the institution.
In recognition of their participation, certificates
were awarded to the attendees, while Dr
Sikander was presented with a shield as a token
of appreciation for his contribution.
The seminar concluded with remarks from

Oral hygiene lecture at
Bahria College Karsaz

KARACHI: Bahria College Karsaz recently
organised an oral hygiene awareness lecture by
guest speaker Dr Hera Nadeem, a consultant oral
surgeon.
The session drew over 700 students from the
college’s primary, middle, and Cambridge wings,
along with the teaching faculty.
Dr Hera, during her lecture, underscored the
significance of maintaining optimal oral hygiene.
She informed the audience about brushing
techniques and proper flossing methods while
shedding light on prevalent dental diseases.
She said a considerable number of dental
issues stem from inadequate oral hygiene and
can be averted through conscientious oral care
practices.
Addressing the audience, she highlighted the
importance of adopting a healthy and toothfriendly diet. She said that the mouth serves as a
gateway to the body and warned that neglecting
oral health could potentially contribute to various
long-term health issues such as diabetes and
heart diseases.
The session concluded with a questionand-answer segment, where both students
and teachers actively participated, seeking
clarification on various aspects of oral health.
Dr Atika, the Medical Officer of Bahria College,

A call for shift to modern approaches to
caries cure in Pakistan

In the early 20th century, GV Black’s caries
classification system, based on tooth type
and involved tooth surface, played a pivotal
role in shaping dental practice. However, this
era viewed caries as irreversible, leading to
a surgical focus on removing carious lesions
and repairing resulting cavities.
Although effective for over a century, this
philosophy faces challenges in the context of
modern cariology, advanced technology, and
adhesive restorative materials.
Black’s system, designed for non-adhesive
restorations like silver amalgam, struggles with
detecting initial lesions and accommodating
the complexity of restoring exposed tooth
surfaces as lesions progress. It adheres to the
“extension for prevention” principle, requiring
extensive cavity preparation.
Despite evolving classifications and
caries management systems globally,
Black’s approach remains prevalent in
Pakistan. However, dental professionals
acknowledge its focus on cavity treatment
rather than carious processes. Recognizing

its misalignment with minimal intervention
approaches, there’s a pressing need for
comprehensive education on contemporary
systems.
GJ Mount’s 1997 caries classification system,
discussed internationally and subsequently
refined, considers lesion location, size, and
activity status. It emphasizes early detection,
prompt intervention, and disease prevention.
Widely adopted globally, this system aligns
with minimal intervention dentistry.

In Pakistan, there’s a critical need for
transitioning to modern approaches through
dental education. All dental team members
should be familiar with new classifications,
fostering interprofessional communication,
disease comprehension, and improved
patient outcomes. Embracing contemporary
systems can minimise the sacrifice of
healthy tooth structure advocated by Black’s
recommendations, marking a positive shift in
dental practices.

HITEC-IMS
Dental College marks oral health
awareness week

TAXILA, RAWALPINDI: In a concerted effort
to increase awareness regarding oral health
within the community, HITEC-IMS Dental
College recently organized an Oral Health
Awareness Week, featuring a range of
engaging activities designed to educate and
involve participants.
Under the leadership of Dr Irfan Shah, the
Principal of Dental College HITEC-IMS, and
coordinated by Dr Maria Rabbani, Assistant
Professor of Community Dentistry, the
campaign included diverse events such as
an awareness walk, an inter-school video
competition, involvement of school principals
in dental college activities, as well as
informative sessions and lectures conducted
by Dr Mariam Saeedullah, Dr Sana Tariq, Dr
Shahan, and house officers.
The week was kicked off with lectures by
Dr Maria Rabbani at HITEC School for Girls
and Boys, focusing on cultivating oral health
awareness among teachers and students
and emphasising the integration of oral

health practices into daily life and informed
nutritional choices.
An awareness walk, beginning from the
college’s main entrance and culminating at
the HITUDE monument was held. Participants
included the Director of HITEWT, the Director
of Academics, the Principal of Dental College
HITEC-IMS, faculty members, and house
officers. Dr Rida delivered a closing speech
aimed at promoting oral health awareness
among school and college students.
Adding a creative dimension to the initiative
was a video competition themed “Bright
Smiles, Healthy Styles,” involving students
from 11 different schools. The competition
encouraged participants to creatively express
the importance of maintaining good oral
hygiene for overall health. Judges Dr Waheed,
Dr Shahzana, and Dr Ambreen evaluated the
entries, awarding cash prizes to the top three
positions and certificates to all participants.
The Principal of Dental College HITEC-IMS
delivered the closing remarks.

As part of the initiative, eight school
principals and faculty members were invited
to visit Dental College HITEC-IMS, where
they were briefed on the college’s activities
promoting oral health awareness, including
educational
programmes,
community
outreach, research endeavors, and innovative
practices. The visit concluded with the
presentation of shields to the guests.
Professor Dr Irfan Shah conducted lectures
at HITEC University on oral cancers and
maxillofacial
pathologies,
emphasising
causes, symptoms, and early diagnosis.
Dr Shahreen highlighted the importance
of general dentistry, oral health, disease
prevention, and early treatment.
The campaign concluded with dental
screenings conducted by house officers and
the community dentistry department at the
Educators School in Taxila on December 15th.
Over 250 students underwent examinations,
and an awareness lecture was delivered by Dr
Arooba, Dr Hamna, and Dr Alishba. –PR
