Co-hosted jointly with the Australian
Dental Association (ADA), the 2023 World
Dental Congress will take place at the
International Convention Centre Sydney
in Australia from 24 to 27 September.
The last time Australia hosted the World
Dental Congress was in 2003. FDI had
initially awarded the congress to Australia for 2021, but the COVID-19 pandemic
eventually meant that the in-person
event had to pivot online in very short
order. It is expected that the 2023 event
will be the largest dental event held in
Sydney since the pandemic. It will also
replace this year’s Australian Dental
Congress, which is run by the ADA every
two years, drawing between 4,000 and
6,000 dental professionals to the city.
Over the course of four days, this
year’s congress will offer a cutting-edge
scientific programme with more than
220 sessions and interactive forums
covering the most relevant topics in
dentistry. The programme will feature
presentations by the leading figures in
dentistry from Australia and abroad.

Of particular note will be the inaugural
FDI Young Dentists Forum. On 27 September,
this new event will gather young dentists
from all over the world to learn about
today’s hottest topics in dentistry. It will
also be a unique opportunity for dental
students and professionals who have just
started their dental career to find out
more about development opportunities
within the dental profession, to grow
their professional network and to learn
about the work done by FDI.
The congress will also host a dental exhibition displayed over multiple
halls and involving over 150 exhibitors,
keeping dental professionals up to date
with the latest advancements in dental
products and services. Each day, various
industry symposia will be offered in addition to the main scientific programme.

In addition, the 2023 FDI World Dental
Parliament sessions will be held concurrently with the congress. The FDI Parliament is the legislative body for the world
of dentistry, and during its sessions,
all FDI member associations come together
to discuss, formulate and decide on policies that shape how issues like oral health
promotion and general dentistry policy
are handled on a global basis.

on the popular outdoor game of cricket.
Indoor cricket was started in Australia in
the 1970s. It is a fast-paced game that takes
place on a court surrounded by a net
enclosure. The game is suitable for people
of all ages. In total, there will be around
12 teams with six to eight players each.
This is a complimentary offer to registered
delegates of the congress.
Pre-congress social events
On 23 September between 6:45 and
16:45 (times are subject to change), the
world’s first “Tooth and Wicket Cricket”
tournament will be held as part of
the World Dental Congress social programme. Delegates from around the
world will have the chance to compete in
what is now the second most popular
sport in the world. The organisers have
On the same day, the official opening ceremony will be held at the
convention centre at 18:00. During the
festive event, participants can expect
a typical Australian welcome, spectacular entertainment and the traditional
FDI flag ceremony. Attendance of the
opening is included in the registration fee;
however, delegates are required to
register in advance.

prestigious awards and grants to
commend outstanding contributions.

FDI Smile Grant
The FDI Smile Grant is a CHF 5,000
grant which recognises FDI member national dental associations that are making a difference in oral health through
innovative and sustainable community
outreach projects in their countries.
The grant is open to any FDI regular or associate member. It is designed to reward projects that have
been actively rolled out for at least
one year and that will continue for at
least one year more. Eligible projects
may address any oral health issue
and/or disease and must have a
strong focus on oral health education, oral health promotion and oral
disease prevention.
The award is given to two applicants for their original projects and
has an application submission deadline of 1 February each year. In 2023,
the awards ceremony will take place
during the FDI General Assembly on
22 September at the WDC. Applications for the FDI Smile Grant are
accepted year-round.

in Dentistry Awards
Recognising the importance of
sustainability in dental practice,
the FDI Sustainability in Dentistry
Award honours sustainability champions and provides global recognition for their efforts. Dental teams

elebrated every year on 20 March,
World Oral Health Day (WOHD)
is the largest global awareness
campaign on oral health. The WOHD
task team oversees the development
and implementation of the campaign
strategy. Dr Anna Lella from Poland
is the task team’s chair, and she talks
about the initiative’s significance and
strategic plans for the upcoming years
in this interview.
What is the main mission of WOHD,
and why does it matter on a global
scale?
WOHD is an initiative of the global
community of dental practitioners
who want to assist their patients not
only by providing them with individual treatment, but also by raising
social awareness of the importance
of maintaining good oral health.
WOHD is a worldwide celebration held with a significant mission:
to empower people with the knowledge and tools to prevent and control oral diseases. These diseases
have a significant impact on people’s
lives and are a major health concern
in many countries, affecting nearly
3.5 billion people worldwide. They
cause pain, discomfort, social isolation and loss of self-confidence and
are often connected to other serious
health problems. However, the good
news is that most oral health conditions are largely preventable and
treatable when addressed early on.
This is why we as dentists put so
much emphasis on prevention.
WOHD encourages individuals to
prioritise their oral health through a
good oral hygiene routine and by
managing risk factors. By preserving
oral health, not only do we do good to
our mouths, but also we contribute to
our overall health and well-being.
Could you tell us more about the
campaign’s global impact?
Since its launch in 2007, WOHD’s
reach and impact have significantly
grown, thanks to the invaluable engagement of FDI, the national dental
organisations and individual dentists
worldwide. Three years ago, FDI kickstarted the Be Proud of Your Mouth
campaign, motivating people to
value and care for their oral health.
This powerful call to action encouraged individuals to place an ornate
art frame over their mouths using

the different #MouthProud tools
available online and on social media,
symbolising their commitment to
prioritising oral health.
Through this campaign, we hoped
to motivate people to value and take
care of their mouths and understand
that, by doing so, they can also help
protect and improve their general
health and well-being. The response
was incredible! Thousands of people
worldwide got involved through
events organised by dental associations, specialist groups and the
wider healthcare community. More
than 26,000 proud mouths were
shared across various online platforms, 223 countries and territories
got involved and the average media
reach was four billion.
Thanks to this tremendous engagement, we made a significant impact
and were able to successfully wrap
up the Be Proud of Your Mouth
campaign.
What are the plans for the future
of WOHD?
The campaign’s growth has been
truly remarkable. As we move forward,
our challenge is to capitalise on
this momentum and create a lasting
impact over the next three years.
Our mission remains clear: to take
meaningful action towards ending
the neglect of global oral health.
awareness and roll out the campaign
in your community. Whatever you
decide to do—however big or small—
contributes to improving the oral
health of populations globally.
The campaign strategy will be
unveiled during the WOHD launch on
24 September at the WDC in Sydney.

movement. We encourage you to

and global health domains, and feedback from FDI members, campaign

Prof. Bill Scarfe, US
Prof. Scarfe studied at the
Adelaide Dental School, graduated
from the University of Adelaide in
Australia in 1982 and was awarded a
fellowship in the Royal Australasian
College of Dental Surgeons in Sydney
in Australia in 1986. After completing a certificate in dental diagnostic
science and a master’s degree at
the Graduate School of Biomedical
Sciences at the University of Texas
Health Science Center at San Antonio in the US in 1992, Prof. Scarfe
joined the faculty staff at the University of Louisville in the US. He is a
diplomate of the American Board
of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology
and the current scientific editor of
the oral radiology section of Oral
Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology
and Oral Radiology, and he is on
the editorial board of Angle and
the Australian Dental Journal.
A former treasurer of the American
Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial
Radiology and a past vice president of the International Association of DentoMaxilloFacial Radiology, Prof. Scarfe has published
extensively on CBCT imaging,
including recent consensus statements on general, implant, endodontic and orthodontic use guidelines. He has presented internationally as well as nationally
and is active in research on the
clinical applications of CBCT imaging.

A graduate of the National and

surgery in Germany and the US. Today, he is
a full professor at the Department of Periodontics and Endodontics at Stony Brook
University in New York in the US.
He was the president of the Academy of Osseointegration’s Osseointegration Foundation in 2018 and 2019
and the president of the International
Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research’s Implantology Research
Group in 2019 and 2020. Prof. Romanos
is a fellow of several leading scientific
and research societies, including the
American Association for Dental, Oral,

polyclinic for dental prosthetics until 2003. She received

Prof. Müller is a past president of the European
College of Gerodontology and the Geriatric Oral
Research Group of the International Association
for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR).
She is on the board of the Schweizerische Gesellschaft
für Alters- und Special-Care-Zahnmedizin (Swiss
society for geriatric and special care dentistry).
She is an associate editor of Gerodontology and a
co-editor of the book Oral Healthcare and the Frail Elder:
A Clinical Perspective, which was published in 2010.
In 2013, she was awarded the IADR Distinguished
Scientist Award in Geriatric Oral Research. Her areas

A chance to meet with others
Nicolette Hughes, the primary
exhibition manager for the 2023
World Dental Congress, is keen to
present the exhibition not only as
a great place to do research and
business but also as a place in which
attendees can meet with others and
perhaps take some time out from
the agreeable hustle and bustle of
a major international dental event.
She said: “In addition to all the great
exhibitors who will be present,
we’re also planning wellness zones
where attendees can rest their feet
for a while, a “Tastes of Australia”
area, in which the superlative food
of Australia will be available, and of
course, coffee baristas! We know
that coffee fuels many events, and
it won’t be any different at this
congress. We appreciate the involvement of every company that
has chosen to exhibit at the congress, and I’m sure delegates will
find a great choice of attractions
at the exhibition to interest them
wherever they go!”
The ADA team behind the
organisation of congress, and particularly the exhibition, is keen to
share that it wants to create a
community feel to the space. The
Exhibition Late Night event, to be
held on 26 September, will offer
delegates the chance to wander
around the various booths with
drinks and canapés in hand while
chatting in a relaxed and collegial
environment.
The exhibition will open on
24 September, the first day of the
congress.
