One of these communities that FJDC teamed up with this year is the hearing-impaired community of Pakistan. Recognizing that a language gap exists between a person with normal hearing as opposed to a deaf one, FJDC had the vision of the development of a dental-specific sign language. As the literature on dental terminologies is extremely limited in sign language, this project would serve to remove the language barrier that may exist between a health practitioner and a deaf patient. FJDC's vision came to life in the form of a book titled 'Pakistan Sign Language for Dentistry'. This book is written in collaboration with the Pakistan Association of the Deaf, one of the leading organisations working for the deaf community. Recently, an MoU was signed between the two organisations to acknowledge their partnership. The book was officially launched at Chief Minister House Karachi on the "International Day of Persons with Disabilities". This event served as the perfect platform for the unveiling of this book. FJDC extends its support for the differentlyabled and has always ensured that our faculty and staff are trained to give appropriate care and equity to such individuals in Fatima Jinnah Dental Hospital and Azam Town General Hospital. These people are a valuable part of our community and FJDC urges other organisations to get involved as well by training their staff effectively and spreading awareness on how to appropriately deal with them. It is up to us to make the disabled community feel welcome wherever they may go. Announced in September last year, the first round of government-led bulk procurement has reduced some unit prices by as much as 63%, and patients in China stand to benefit from cheaper dental implants from April. A total of 55 companies placed bids in Chengdu in January to have their dental implants purchased through China's new bulk procurement programme. English-language news agency China Daily reported that 39 companies made successful bids and that the volume of dental implants procured would be enough to meet 72% of annual demand for implant treatments at public hospitals in China. Average unit prices have reportedly fallen by 55% as a result of the initiative. NHSA figures showed that the median price of premium dental implants belonging to Swiss brands dropped to Chinas National Healthcare Security Administration has introduced measures that are expected to halve the total cost of dental implant treatment at public hospitals in the country. (Image: humphery/Shutterstock) CNY 1,850 (253) from CNY 5,000 (685), representing a 63% reduction, and that the average price of value implants fell by around 50% to CNY 770. The price reductions appeared to exceed the health authority's expectations. Dental Tribune International reported in September that the centralised bulk procurement of dental implant consumables at a provincial level in China was expected to result in a 25% reduction in unit price. In addition to the unit price reductions, the government has capped medical service fees per dental implant placed at public hospitals at CNY 4,500 and permitted hospitals located in areas with higher labour costs to request a higher fee limit. Fees currently range from CNY 6,000 to CNY 9,000. The NHSA said that the new measures will halve the total cost of dental implant surgery in China, which currently varies from CNY 4,000 to CNY 30,000. "The variety of products is rich and can match clinical demands," the administration said. The administration took steps last year to lower the cost of dental implant treatment at public hospitals in an effort to improve the quality of living standards for the country's ageing population. Changsong Jiang, a healthcare insurance expert at Capital Medical University in Beijing, told China Daily that consumers felt that the price of implant treatment in China dental implantation was confusing and inconsistent. "The procurement programme will help make pricing schemes more transparent and open," Jiang said.[12] =>DTI-PDF Jan-Feb'23.FH10 NEWS 12 DENTAL TRIBUNE Pakistan Edition JAN-FEB 2023 New study looks at factors that influence willingness to attend dental check-ups By Anisha Hall Hoppe, Dental Tribune International OKAYAMA, Japan: According to t h e Pa n A m e r i c a n H e a l t h Organization, nine out of ten people are at risk for any type of oral disease, which can be mitigated by healthy oral habits and regular dental check-ups. Investigating the factors that influence willingness to attend dental check-ups regularly may inform public health communication and other means of motivating patients. Researchers in Japan have found that the patients who are most likely to schedule a dental c h e c k- u p a r e t h o s e w h o understand the benefit of checkups in preventing disease and those who have existing positive oral health behaviours. Evaluations included an oral examination and questionnaire that went beyond enquiring about oral health status and behaviours to asking about participants' willingness to improve their overall health according to a particular health belief model, as well as their Researchers in Japan have found that health beliefs and oral health habits are strong indicators of willingness to have regular dental check-ups. (Image: Portrait Image Asia/Shutterstock) response to a risk aversion scenario. The model used seeks to explain health behaviour in terms of the individual's beliefs related to health behaviour, employing concepts such as perceived susceptibility, benefits and barriers, to account for readiness to act. Risk averse individuals tend to make decisions based on avoiding the risk of a potentially negative outcome. The results indicated that, when the participants were more likely to see themselves facing a risk of a negative health outcome in addition to seeing a clear benefit, they were more motivated to engage in preventive health actions. The researchers also found a significant positive association between willingness to have a dental check-up and the oral health behaviours of flossing or using interdental brushes. The team suggested that the correlation was due to self-efficacy, a concept in the health model that deals with confidence that one can take the actions necessary for producing a certain outcome. It would be expected that risk aversion would drive people to adop t healthy behaviours; however, risk aversion was not demonstrated to be a factor in scheduling dental check-ups. The researchers sugges ted the possibility that this finding could be attributed to the relatively young age of the sur vey population, since past studies have indicated that young people have lower risk aversion, and thus recommended further research to investigate the association between these factors. The oral health status measured by oral examination was not found to be associated with a willingness to have regular check-ups. The study, titled "The impact of oral health behaviors, health belief model, and absolute risk aversion on the willingness of Japanese university students to undergo regular dental check-ups: A cross-sectional study", was published in the first November 2022 issue of the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. New evidence suggests possible link between brain function and oral health By Anisha Hall Hoppe, Dental Tribune International DALLAS, US: An increased burden of cerebrovascular disease could be connected to a genetic predisposition for poor oral health, according to a new study funded by the American Heart Association. The researchers used the presence of white matter hyperintensities, which are accumulated damage to the white matter of the brain, as evidence of cerebrovascular disease. Documented through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the resulting scans showed that for individuals who were genetically prone to edentulism or caries there was a 24% increase in white matter hyperintensities in their brains. The white matter hyperintensities are linked to potential issues with balance, mobility and memory. The researchers also generated microstructural damage scores for the participants. Microstructural damage is the degree to which the fine architecture of the brain has changed in comparison with images for a normal brain scan of a healthy adult of similar age. Using data from the UK Biobank, the samples included individuals primarily from the UK of European ancestry. They were evaluated for 105 possible genetic variations linked to caries, the eventual need for dentures or any form of edentulism. The researchers also noted that, when a participant had broader poor oral health beyond caries and edentulism as a result of genetics, the microstructural damage score increased to 43%. Lead author Dr Cyprien Rivier, a pos tdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Neurology at the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven in Connecticut, commented in a press release: Studying oral health is especially important because poor oral health happens frequently and is an easily modif iable risk factorever yone can effectively improve their oral health with minimal time and financial investment. Dr Rivier also noted the value of using neuroimaging tools such as MRI to assess the impact of oral health upon brain function. Dr Joseph P. Broderick, a professor at the University of Cincinnati Department of As there has been little previous research into the topic, magnetic resonance imaging is now being used to provide clues about how oral health can have an impact on brain function. (Image: Alina Bratosin/Shutterstock) Neurology and Rehabilitation Medicine and a Stroke Council member, said that the findings should spur more research but are not concrete evidence that improved oral hygiene will improve brain health. He noted that genetic factors for a variety of conditions could overlap with those that cause poor oral health. Dr Broderick said: Environmental factors such as smoking and health conditions such as diabetes are much stronger risk factors for poor oral health than any genetic marker except for rare genetic conditions associated with poor oral health, such as defective or missing enamel.
