(8 February, 14:00–15:00), Dr Simone Marconcini,
an oral Surgeon and implantologist from Italy,
will elaborate on the use of zirconia implants.
Please also see page 10 for an interview with
Dr Marconcini. AEEDC Dubai conference is being held in collaboration with the Dubai Health
Authority. INDEX Conferences and Exhibitions
is an ADA CERP-recognised provider and participants can earn up to 19.5 continuing education
credits for attending the conference programme.
In the fully booked exhibition halls, dental
professionals will be able to see the practical
aspects in various workshops. The latest innovations currently available on the market will
be on display.
The Republic of Korea was officially announced as the guest of honour for the 27th edition
of AEEDC Dubai. More than 130 South Korean
companies are set to participate in AEEDC Dubai
2023. The Republic of Korea is a long-term partner and contributor to AEEDC and has been
involved in the show for more than 15 years.
“We have seen them grow significantly during
this time and we are delighted to highlight their achievements this year,” said Anas
Al Madani, vice chairman and group CEO of
INDEX Holding.
For the first time, AEEDC offered a platform
for dental start-ups in 2022. Under the name

AEEDC Dubai Stars, it provided newcomers in
the industry with the opportunity to expose
their enterprise to a global audience and accelerate their business. This year, AEEDC Dubai Stars
will happen again in parallel to AEEDC Dubai.
The show features key figures, celebrities, and
influencers who share their success stories
and insights along with several entertainment
activities and competitions.
According to the organisers, last year’s edition
of AEEDC Dubai the most successful conference
to that date. Despite the continuing challenges of
the pandemic, the 2022 event attracted more than
66,000 participants from 155 countries and showcased over 4,800 state-of-the-art products from
3,600 major dental and public health companies in
the field of oral hygiene and dentistry. The event
featured a total of 22 official country pavilions.
The exhibition and conference also included several dedicated training courses, workshops and
student poster competitions showcasing the latest
advanced research and breakthroughs in the dental field. The event generated a record-breaking
US$3.9 billion in trade deals.
In a press release, Dr Abdul Salam Al Madani,
executive chairman of AEEDC Dubai and the
Global Scientific Dental Alliance and chairman
of event organiser INDEX Holding, stated:
“We are proud of the successes generated
by the event over the years, which reflect the
UAE’s role in creating new opportunities for global
industries and the support it has extended to
the growth and innovation of the international
medical sector.”
Dr Al Madani explained that the volume of
direct and subsidiary deals reaffirmed the event’s
importance to the global dental industry. “These
deals, which were struck between participating
companies, health institutions, clinics and hospitals, were driven by market demand for innovation
and the growth in public and private sector budgets for serving health services and disease prevention requirements, especially after the challenges
experienced by health and medical institutions
during the pandemic,” he explained.
All information concerning the event can
be found on the free mobile AEEDC congress app

“Straumann Group”
Mr Bender, how important is the
Middle Eastern market for the
Straumann Group?
The Middle Eastern market has
always been, and still is, of the highest strategic importance for the
Straumann Group. Since business potential and growth expectations are
huge, we continuously invest in this
area. Over the last couple of years,
this region has been developed into
a highly attractive dentistry hub that
has gained a high reputation and
that exerts a positive impact, especially
on aesthetic dentistry. That is also
one of the main reasons why we took
the decision to hold our large and
very successful aesthetic dentistry
summit in January 2022 in Dubai.
The event attracted more than
500 participants.

What makes Straumann different
from other companies?
As a global leader in implantology with a legacy of more than
60 years in dental technology,
Straumann is proud of its product
innovations and technological breakthroughs and insists on the support
of scientific evidence. Its breakthroughs have included the TL implant with its Morse taper connection
in 1986 and the launches of the SLActive
surface in 2005 and the Roxolid material in 2009. We stand for premium
Swiss quality, precision and innovation. We deliver confidence in dentistry and are backed by the largest
global scientific network in implantology, the International Team for
Implantology.

In recent years, a large number
of dental professionals have moved
to the Middle East, especially to the
emirate of Dubai. This growing size
of the market gives the region greater
relevance. Peers can connect, exchange ideas and build sustainable
communities in the region. During
COVID-19, we have always been committed to keeping our strong presence and even increasing our investment in the Middle East, for example
by participating in regional events
such as AEEDC Dubai.

Tribune Group is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider. ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education. ADA
CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry. This continuing education activity has been planned and implemented in
accordance with the standards of the ADA Continuing Education Recognition Program (ADA CERP) through joint efforts between Tribune Group and Dental Tribune Int. GmbH.

What is important about these
two lines is that they benefit from the
same endosteal design, which means
the same drill set is used for both systems. This a true advantage for clinicians willing to further expand the
variety of indications they cover,
either using BLX, our new generation
of bone-level implant, or using TLX,
which enables them to take advantage of the proven benefits of a tissue-level implant that is now suitable
for immediate workflows. These lines
are fully integrated digitally, including
for planning and for using CAD/CAM
to fabricate restorations, enabling
our customers to optimise their workflows.
A special highlight in implant
treatment service is Smile in a Box.
Smile in a Box is a flexible digital
treatment planning and manufacturing service that helps dental professionals to grow and develop their
dental practice. This offering drives
value by improving patient acceptance and allowing access to digital
dentistry without investing in additional hardware or software. Surgeons
gain more efficiency by reducing
chair time with immediate treatment
protocols, and they increase the level
of confidence in implant placement
with a more predictable workflow
using guided surgery. Smile in a Box
lets you grow your business, no matter where you are in your practice
development.
We are proud of our new treatment services and also proud of our
new intra-oral scanner, Virtuo Vivo,
which has one of the smallest and
lightest handpieces currently available on the market. The handpiece,
which weighs only 130 g, is ergonomically designed and has a pen-like
grip, offering unparalleled patient
comfort. The Virtuo Vivo replaces
conventional tray impressions and,
owing to the small scanner size,
makes the patient experience more
pleasant and acceptable. The Virtuo
Vivo connects directly to Straumann

Group services and solutions, such
as coDiagnostiX implant planning
software and ClearCorrect clear
aligners, while staying a completely
open system.

A key benefit when partnering
with Straumann is education. We provide clinicians access to a global network of peers and mentors as well as
to an extensive panel of educational
options in order to support our customers in developing their skills,
growing and succeeding.

How is education going to contribute
to the overall success of the company across the region?
It is our mission to be the benchmark for professional training and
continuing development in implant
dentistry. Together with our partners,
we offer a comprehensive educational programme in all disciplines of
implant dentistry and make the latest
technology available. This education
covers all relevant aspects of dentistry, including tooth preservation,
implant-borne restorations, oral tissue regeneration, and digital workflows for all specialisations and on
all skill levels.

But that is not all, particularly
considering evolving needs in this
time of digital transformation. When
it comes to digital dentistry, Straumann
offers efficient and validated workflows, high-tech dental equipment
and premium materials. This gives
customers direct access to a complete
ecosystem covering all stages of the
implant workflow for a frictionless
experience: data acquisition, planning, design, surgery and restoration.
At all stages of the implant workflow,
whether in-house or outsourced, our
systems are modular, compatible
with third-party solutions and truly
tailored to support our customers in
their journey. 

We offer the opportunity to learn,
meet, share, explore and grow, and
we welcome everyone who is interested in the outcome of close and

Please tell us about AEEDC Dubai
Stars?
AEEDC Dubai Stars was created
in order to bring some of the social
elements of dentistry to the fore.
Here, we look at how dentists invest in
and promote their practices, including
through the use of social media, and
we highlight and address some of
the challenges that dentists face in
their daily lives. For example, the
topic of physiotherapy comes to mind.
Dentists spend a lot of time on their
feet and it is important to talk about
the types of habits that can be established to promote a healthy lifestyle
and posture. Dentists also need to learn
how to better handle their funds,
and so we are holding some sessions
related to investing.
Why do we refer to this as AEEDC
Dubai Stars? This part of the programme

often brings in some of dentistry’s
leading celebrities and influencers,
including business advisors and physiotherapists.
Is there anything else about AEEDC
Dubai that our readers should know?
AEEDC Dubai has been growing
every year and we feel that it has become the most prominent and important event in the dental industry.
It is a major meeting point for companies, dentists and researchers. Attending the event has also become a great
social experience and dental professionals from all over the world gather
at AEEDC Dubai with the aim of
enjoying their time. AEEDC Dubai will
continue to provide this international
platform and enhance its offering
so that the event can exceed the
expectations of our customers and
guests. 

South Korea announced as guest of honour
More than 130 South Korean companies to participate in AEEDC Dubai 2023
as the most important domestic
production items in South Korea.
Additionally, dental implant exports
account for 9.5% of South Korea’s
total medical device exports,
at approximately US$340 million
(€318 million).

 AEEDC Dubai has officially announced the Republic of Korea as the
guest of honour for the 27th edition of
the annual UAE International Dental
Conference and Arab Dental Exhibition (AEEDC Dubai). The event is the
largest international scientific dental
conference and exhibition in the
world.

South Korea is also one of the
leading countries in the world for
medical device market size. Its production amounts to over US$11 billion,
a figure that has nearly doubled
within the last four years. The dental
profession is one of most prestigious
professions in South Korea, and more
than 80% of South Korean dentists
can perform implant surgery.

More than 130 South Korean
companies are set to participate in
AEEDC Dubai 2023. Additionally, the
event will welcome participants from
155 countries, will boast eight exhibition halls and will host seven major
conferences at the Dubai World Trade

“South Korea, together with the
Korean Dental Industry Association
(KDIA), has been a long-standing
friend and partner of AEEDC Dubai
for more than 15 years now. It has
made valuable contributions to the
event, and we look forward to welcoming it as the guest of honour for
the upcoming AEEDC Dubai 2023,”

that number has grown significantly
to over 130 companies participating

dental industry over the past 15 years,
we are happy that AEEDC Dubai has
also grown into the world’s largest

annual dental conference and exhibition. We are very proud that the Republic of Korea has been chosen as the
guest of honour at AEEDC Dubai 2023
and I think it would be an important
example of the rising status of Korean
dental brands in the global market.
The KDIA will continue to support
Korean dental brands and AEEDC Dubai
to grow together,” stated Hoon Taek

South Korean dental companies
have proved to be prominent players
in the field, offering implants from
notable brands such as Osstem Implant,

Determining the appropriate protocol for implant placement
requires understanding and utilisation of biology
An interview with Dr Simone Marconcini by Nathalie Schüller, Dental Tribune International
thetics and bone loss. Do you think
many surgeons prescribe bone or
soft-tissue augmentation and recommend it to their patients?
I think that today we confuse
regeneration and repair, which are
two very different things. A large
number of dentists who use biomaterials are not performing regeneration
but repair. Indeed, the bone tissue
which will be recreated in the defect
to be treated will never be natural
bone but always a mix. It is vital to
understand the goal of the treatment:
if it is to regenerate, we should know
that the constant use of biomaterials
is not necessary. I realise that all too
often biomaterials are used when
not indicated and that the importance
of making a correct diagnosis is underestimated.
 Dr Simone Marconcini.

I had the opportunity to work
with a dentist who became my mentor,
Dr Ugo Covani. I often went to his
surgery to watch him work when
I was a student. Now, we do research
and sometimes even surgeries together. He is the director of the institute I work at: the Istituto Stomatologico Toscano, a foundation for clinical,
research and advanced training in
dentistry in Camaiore in Italy.
Research and conferences are
among my greatest motivations. After all, being a dentist is a difficult
profession; it is important to work beyond your practice, to attend conferences, to look at what is happening
outside. You need to be curious, push
your boundaries and not do the same
things every day. What’s more, the
ultimate advantage of attending as
many conferences as possible is meeting your peers. It opens our minds
and enables us to learn constantly
about our field.
In an interview in 2021, you spoke
about the use of ozone therapy. This
completely natural method eliminates viruses and bacteria. It helps
modify the healing process in a positive way, avoiding inflammation and
facilitating tissue regeneration. Do you
use it systematically, and do you think
that it should be a standard part of
the surgical protocol?

tive analgesics. It is a natural painkiller, and we use it for every implant
surgery, before, during and after the
surgery.
We also determine the patient’s
vitamin D level before an operation,
because we know today that oxidative stress plays an important role in
the evolution of our therapy. Before
performing surgery, it is therefore
essential for me to know the patient’s
vitamin D values.
More and more dentists worldwide check vitamin D levels as well as
levels of the various molecules that
play a part in oxidative stress. We take
different parameters into account, like
saliva, to determine the patient’s oxidative stress level. My group is also
doing research on this subject. We
have evaluated this parameter in
diabetic and non-diabetic patients.
The goal with this approach was to
observe the differences in response
between these two groups, and we
realised that oxidative stress plays
a very important part in healing.
In your presentation at the French
Dental Association conference held
in Paris last November, you talked
about post-extraction resorption of
the alveolar ridge. Research on this
subject began in the 1960s with
Brånemark. Sixty years later, implant
placements often face issues of aes© Dr Simone Marconcini

n Dr Marconcini, I am curious to
know why you became a dental surgeon. Could you talk to us about
what led you to this profession?
My father and my grandfather
are both ophthalmologists, and I also
wanted to work in the field of medicine. I was accepted into medical and
dental school, and my father advised
me to study dentistry. I thought it was
a good option, and it was a choice
I have never regretted.

Yes, I think so. It is in fact part
of my protocol. After surgery, I use
ozone therapy because it offers many
benefits. As a result, I have drastically reduced the use of postopera-

You also spoke about TBR Dental’s
Z1 implant, a hybrid titanium–zirconia
implant you use. Is this choice mainly
because of the antibacterial barrier
it creates, protecting hard and soft
tissue at the same time?
With regard to hybrid implants,
I use the Z1 as often as possible
because my work is focused on aesthetic implantology and treatment of
the premaxillary region, where the
aesthetic result is very important.
I particularly like this implant
because its zirconia collar has very
strong biocompatibility; the fibroblasts of the soft tissue create a close
bond with the zirconia. In addition,
with regard to osseointegration quality, the titanium implant is the gold
standard owing to its mechanical resistance. For me, titanium in the bone
and zirconia in the biological space
are the key strengths of this implant,
and that is why I use it.
One school of surgeons recommends
the use of ceramic implants, the
main argument being the reduction
of the risk of peri-implantitis. Indeed,
bacteria are less likely to adhere to
the implant, and ceramic is more resis
tant to compression than titanium is.
What is your opinion of zirconia implants? And what is the difference,
for you, between these implants and
titanium implants?
One of the problems I find with
full-ceramic implants is that the insertion torque can never be greater

than 35 Ncm. This means that, in the
case of very dense and very strong
bone, greater preparation of the implant site will be needed. In the case
of immediate loading, it is a constraint.
In the case series you recently published in the European Journal for
Dental Implantologists, you presented a case of post-extraction implant placement in the anterior maxillary region (the aesthetic zone).
Could you please tell us more about
this topic?

many systemic evaluations on patients in whom we had placed titanium implants. I have never found an
increase in markers of systemic inflammation in these patients.
But it is a topical notion and anything that questions an established
fact is interesting; this is how we
make progress, how we improve our
way of doing things. We have not
reached the point of proving that titanium should not be used, and for me,
it is still the gold standard at the level
of osteology.

“A large number of dentists who use biomaterials
are not performing regeneration but repair.”
We have published a number
of scientific articles which demonstrated that if the biology is known
and it can be exploited the success
of implant therapy is equivalent to
the result obtained with placement of
an implant in mature bone. Certain
parameters must be respected, for
example analysing the periosteum
correctly, knowing how to use the
bundle bone, understanding the biology in general and knowing how to
exploit it.
When we have the opportunity,
we perform immediate loading because a temporary restoration helps
us maintain the periosteum. If we
want to modify the emergence profile
of the temporary restoration, we can
always manipulate the soft tissue
to ultimately obtain a good aesthetic
result.
However, immediate loading is
not always possible. In such a case,
I use customised healing abutments,
which I will modify to support the
periosteum. Of course, every patient’s
biology is different, but some things
are the same.
Regarding the long-term stability of
the soft tissue, have you observed
any differences between titanium
and zirconia?
Ceramic implants have several
advantages. One of the problems
linked to peri-implantitis is the dif
fusion of titanium microparticles,
which could infiltrate the soft tissue
surrounding the implant and cause
inflammation. With zirconia, this
problem does not exist. It is one of the
reasons why I like and am increasingly using implants with a zirconia
collar.
What do you think of the assertion that
metal implants in a patient’s mouth are
detrimental to health and that they can
affect the immune system?
Being a dentist, I look for answers
in the facts. The day an article can
show me that titanium in the bone is
hazardous to health, I will assess
things differently. My group has done

Is there anything else that you would
like to share?
I am really delighted to have the
opportunity to work with TBR. I have
found in them a company that wants
to grow and evolve in France and
abroad. We are conducting several scientific studies on the Z1 implant, and
I firmly believe that in the years to come
we will publish other studies that support the use of hybrid implants.
I will be in Dubai in February for
AEEDC Dubai, where we will begin to
introduce the Z1 implant to the Middle
East. For my part, having the opportunity to present my experience abroad
and to collaborate with a company like
TBR Dental is particularly rewarding. 7

Treating patients with disabilities
© Rob Wilson/Shutterstock.com

Dentists feel unprepared to provide ideal oral care to patients with disabilities
they would not provide treatment
and would instead refer the patient
to a specialist. When asked how
comfortable clinicians felt when providing treatment, 45.3% of respondents gave a neutral response, 32.7%
responded positively and 14.7% responded negatively. Strongly positive or strongly negative responses
were given by 4.7% and 2.0% of respondents, respectively.

 A study by researchers in Iraq
and the UAE has found that dentists working in these countries feel
ill-equipped to provide optimal oral
care to patients with disabilities. The
reasons include anxiety among clinicians and a lack of adequate treatment time and training. According
to the researchers, targeted educational opportunities are required in
order to improve clinicians’ confidence and ability to treat patients
with disabilities.
A sample of 150 dentists in Ajman
completed a cross-sectional survey
that aimed to investigate clinicians’
competency in treating patients with
disabilities and the factors that influence their delivery of care and
perceived competency.
The majority of respondents (75.3%)
had between one and five years of

The authors wrote that “participant dentists’ limited treatment
options for this population depend
on their lack of adequate time and
training, limited capacity to communicate with patients, patient adherence and the constant situational
awareness of how to avoid unintentional injuries to patients that can
lead to possible injuries to their
clinical staff”.
Dr Salah told DTI: “I think that
we need to establish and implement
educational courses on treating
these patients in the undergraduate

programme, as well as through
a required live course. In particular,
I personally think that training on
how to best treat patients who are
on the autism spectrum would be
very valuable.”
The study, titled “Dentists’ attitude towards dental treatment of
disabled patients”, was published in
Advances in Medical Education and
Practice on 14 December 2022. 
Editorial note: In the study, the term
“disability” was used to describe any
physical or mental condition that
affected a patient’s ability to function
in a way deemed to be normal or which
restricted the patient physically or
prevented the patient from carrying
out activities.

A significant number of respondents (44.0%) felt that they were only
somewhat able to provide ideal oral
care to patients with disabilities, and
35.5% said that the time required for
treatment was a concern. Concern
about their ability to interact with
the patient was mentioned by 38.0%
of those surveyed, and concern

about the treatment resulting in an
injury to the patient or the treating
dentist was expressed by 34.7% and

clinical experience and 46.7% of the
sample group described their experience of treating patients with disabilities as minimal. Just 2% said
that they had significant experience
of treating patients with disabilities.
The lead author of the study,
Dr Afraa Salah, who lectures paediatric dentistry and psychology and
behavioural sciences for dental
students at Ajman University, confirmed to Dental Tribune International (DTI) that older dentists in the
sample group also lacked confidence
and experience in treating patients
with disabilities.
Nearly three-quarters (73.3%) of
respondents said that they would
attempt treatment of patients with
disabilities, but that they would refer the patient to another clinician
if the therapy became too difficult.
One-fifth of respondents said that

Small but powerful
Microrobots may enhance endodontic treatments. By Franziska Beier, Dental Tribune International
 New developments in small-scale
robotics and nanotechnology offer
previously unimagined opportunities
for new diagnostic and therapeutic
approaches. In testing the use of
microrobots for endodontic applications, researchers from the School of
Dental Medicine at the University of
Pennsylvania and from its Center for
Innovation and Precision Dentistry

ongoing collaboration between the
dental school and the university’s
School of Engineering and Applied
Science. In a previous study, the collaboration produced a microrobotic
system consisting of nanoparticles
that can not only brush but also floss
and rinse teeth in a single step, helping to effectively eliminate biofilm
from teeth.

and biocompatibility. Several IONP
formulations have already been approved by the US Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) for parenteral
administration as treatment of iron
deficiency anaemia.”
He added, “Our previous histopathological analysis of gingival,
mucosal and other tissues, including

have found that the robots were able
to access difficult-to-reach root canal
surfaces, disrupt biofilm, retrieve
samples for diagnosis and even deliver drugs.
The main cause of endodontic
treatment failure is incomplete root
canal disinfection, resulting in endodontic infections and periodontitis.
One of the reasons for this is the complex anatomy of the root canal system, making effective biofilm removal
difficult, and up until now, means of
diagnosing and evaluating disinfection
efficiency have been limited.
The microrobotic system used in
the current study is the result of an

14

Effective and precise
guidance of microrobots
The researchers developed and
tested two different microrobotic
platforms in their recent study. For
both, they used iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs), which share catalytic
and magnetic properties, as building
blocks for the microrobots.
When asked about the biocompatibility and safety concerns for patients, co-author Prof. Hyun Michel Koo
of the Department of Orthodontics
at Penn Dental Medicine, replied:
“IONPs are widely used in nanomedicine due to their minimal cytotoxicity, excellent physicochemical properties, stability in aqueous solutions

AEEDC Dubai · 7–9 February 2023

major organs such as the liver and
kidney, showed no signs of harmful
effects, indicating high histocompatibility of both in-house and FDAapproved IONP formulations.”
To evaluate the effectiveness
of the endodontic microrobotic platforms, the researchers conducted
experiments using 3D-printed tooth
replicas prepared with a biofilm containing four different endodontic
bacterial species.
For the first platform, using electromagnets, the research team concentrated the IONPs in micro-swarms
and magnetically controlled them
to disrupt and retrieve the biofilm.

Analysis of the collected sample
found all four bacterial species. In
addition, under the microscope, all
nanoparticles appeared to have been
removed from the root canal.
For the second platform, the research team 3D-printed miniaturised
helix-shaped robots and filled them
with an IONP-embedded gel. They
then guided the robots within the
root canal using magnetic fields and
observed that they disrupted the
biofilm chemically and mechanically
with high efficiency. Especially noteworthy is the possibility of loading
the helix-shaped robots with therapeutics for targeted drug delivery at
the apical region of the root canal,
where infection is in close proximity
to the surrounding tissue.
“The key limitations of current
endodontic strategies are threefold:
lack of precision in targeting biofilms
infecting the apical region and anatomical complexities of the root canal, as well as the difficulty of retrieving biofilm samples for diagnosis.
To the best of our knowledge, there
does not exist an approach capable
of simultaneous sample retrieval
and antimicrobial treatment in endodontics,” commented lead author
Dr Alaa Babeer from Penn Dental
Medicine, on the relevance of the
study findings for endodontic treatments.
“Our findings demonstrate the
feasibility of using the versatility of
microrobotics to access difficult-toreach endodontic surfaces to perform biofilm killing, removal and
retrieval for microbial detection in
real time. Furthermore, we demonstrate the feasibility of robot tracking inside the canal using current
clinical imaging modalities,” he continued.

Future fields of application
and further research
The researchers envision a broad
range of application for the microrobots
in dentistry and general medicine. According to Prof. Koo, IONP microrobots
could combine several functionalities
in dentistry. These include automated,
hands-free brushing and flossing for effective removal of dental biofilms, which
can be helpful for persons with disabilities or lacking manual dexterity to perform good oral hygiene, he said.
Based on the results of the current study findings, Prof. Koo expects
microrobotic platforms “to allow precision-guided therapies to disrupt biofilms in difficult-to-reach spaces and
promote soft-tissue and bone regeneration”. He added that microrobots
could perform delivery of drugs or
living cells in different oral and craniofacial sites, ranging from deep periodontal pockets and the apical region
of the root canal to temporomandibular spaces to promote healing.
For biomedical applications, Prof.
Koo noted that “magnetically controlled
microrobots have shown diverse applications, including anti-cancer therapy, targeted drug, gene and stem
cell delivery, and minimally invasive
surgery”.
The study authors stated that
future research may expand the possibilities for robotic application even
further to the detection, treatment
and removal of biofilms associated
with other infectious diseases and
biofouling of dental and medical devices or implants.
The study, titled “Microrobotics
for precision biofilm diagnostics and
treatment”, was published in the
August 2022 issue of the Journal of
Dental Research. 

 Welcome to the dental event of
the future, where Dentaverse is
supporting AEEDC Dubai by using
Web3 technologies to create a meeting point for the entire global dental community. According to its cofounder and CEO, Martin Ravets, the
platform has the potential to bridge
the gap between physical and virtual
oral care and to overcome the barriers of time and distance in order to
create a more inclusive international
dental community.

completely different type of interaction.”
Let us take a step back and
explain exactly what Dentaverse is.
Popular community-based web tools—
such as Instagram and LinkedIn—
underpin the platform, and these are
mixed with new Web3 technologies,
like blockchain, metaverse and cryptocurrency payment, in order to
create a virtual environment where
users can interact with one another,

to the late 1980s and the 1990s,”
Ravets explained. “We were told
that websites would become an essential tool for presenting your practice, to share information. And the
same thing happened again around
2010 with social media when we
were told that communication and
networking would be reinvented.
These technologies are now so commonplace that we cannot imagine
working without them. It will be the
same with technologies like digital

“Dentaverse brings a fresh angle to dental collaboration and adds new
tools for spreading dental education and creating an inclusive international
community.”—Martin Ravets, co-founder and CEO of Dentaverse

Dental Tribune International (DTI)
spoke with Ravets about the ways in
which Dentaverse improves dental
practices by integrating Web3 technologies. He pointed out that streaming and video call platforms can
only take connectivity to a certain
point. Commenting on the immersive experience that Dentaverse
offers—including the use of virtual
reality (VR) headsets—Ravets said:
“If we were meeting on the Dentaverse
3D platform, we would have eye contact and you would be able to see
and follow my gestures and body
language, and I yours. It would be a

present and learn about dental treatments and products. It aims to provide a comprehensive solution to
the problem of information isolation
in dentistry by creating an online
community and platform that connects practitioners, researchers,
students and other members of the
industry.
Ravets says that, although Web3
technologies may not be widely used
by dental practices currently, they
will quickly become standard working tools. “Right now, it is similar

because these technologies really
allow people to do a lot of great

experiences in real time. Imagine
the following scenario: for a certain
complex dental procedure, a dentist
in Turkey could consult with an
expert in South Korea in real time,
simulate and practise the procedure, and learn the fine details
of a specific technique, receiving
feedback and direction from his or
her peers.”
More broadly, the technology
is well positioned to build a strong
international dental community that
includes dental students and clinicians and enables networking between the two groups. Ravets asked:
“How exciting would it be for students to get acquainted with their
future mentors or colleagues while
still in university, to already secure
an internship position through connections in the Dentaverse environment? Quite simply, it creates a place
to connect, to grow and have fun,
and to shape the dental industry of
tomorrow together with like-minded
individuals.”

The immense potential
of virtual interaction

Is the future of dental
education and
events already here?

Ravets believes that connecting
the global dental community will
help to create a better future for
dentistry, particularly in the realms
of connectivity and education. He
explained: “What it means for dentists, for example, is that they can
organise and attend workshops,
thereby exchanging knowledge and

Dental education and gatherings were largely shifted online in
2020 and 2021, owing to travel restrictions and lockdowns. This development increased the acceptance
of online tools, and Ravets and his
team are thus particularly excited
about what Dentaverse could offer
in these areas.

AEEDC Dubai · 7–9 February 2023

VR technology is well suited to
dental events, and the organisers of
AEEDC announced in January that
the trade fair’s new partnership
with Dentaverse would “break new
ground in dental education, connectivity, and networking”. Dentaverse
organised a special event at Dubai’s
Museum of the Future on the eve
of the congress, where dentists and
special guests had the chance to see
the premiere of the Dentaverse World
platform. Ambassadors of Dentaverse
from around the world are on-site at
AEEDC and on the AEEDC virtual
platform to offer live hybrid workshops, experiences and events relating to virtual applications in the
dental field.
Ravets said: “Dentists will be
able to discover a unique experience
at AEEDC, connecting them with
their community all over the globe.”
He added that the Dentaverse ambassador group had been in the region for some time, working on special projects such as a new dental
care research centre and the effectiveness of toothbrushing using the
platform. Ravets commented that
the Dentaverse team is looking forward to a long-term partnership with
AEEDC, given that both parties are
committed to the growth of the
global dental industry.
Speaking about how Dentaverse
approaches these projects, Ravets
said that solutions are created in
partnership with manufacturers,

institutions and event organisers.
He explained: “We have a partnership with simulation unit manufacturer Saratoga, and we have been
working together for the past few
months, looking at how online dental education is today and how it
could be improved. In addition to the
manual work and physical classes
at university, cameras record what
students do on the frasaco phantom
head, and this is streamed. Student
can rewatch these streams, and the
use of this technology increased
a lot during the pandemic. Using
Dentaverse, a university can really

know whether students have attended and listened to a virtual
class, and it can allow students to
do a lot of virtual test training. It is
much more fun for the students and
really is a totally different method
in which they can connect with
each other anytime. That is how we
are approaching this, collaborating
with the university to take streaming from a 2D to a 3D communication tool.”
Developing Dentaverse has been
a labour of love for Ravets—an entrepreneur who feels equally at home

in the dental and digital worlds.
When it comes to innovation, he
says that dentistry is on the cusp of
great advancement. He explained:
“Usually, growth and innovation in
the dental industry occur mostly
through the introduction of more
ergonomic equipment or better
treatment techniques. However,
Dentaverse brings a fresh angle to
dental collaboration and adds new
tools for spreading dental education
and creating an inclusive international community. Digital solutions
bridge the gap between physical
care and virtual care, enabling

healthcare providers and educators
to overcome the barriers of time
and distance. For this reason, I consider Dentaverse to be an important milestone in the future of
dentistry.”
The Dentaverse team is on-site
at AEEDC and has organised an
exciting programme of workshops
and events, including VR workshops. To register for these and find
out more about the programme,
visit www.dentaverse.io/aeedc. Come
meet the team at Booth #CC17
(Concourse 2). 

Dentaverse and AEEDC have recently announced a new partnership, which will break new ground
in dental education, connectivity
and networking. Dentaverse seeks
to educate and connect the dental community in a virtual world just
like AEEDC, which has been a great
source of learning and networking
for the dental community for the
last three decades. Anas Al Madani,
vice chairman and group CEO of
INDEX Holding, stated: “We are
heading into the future of dental
healthcare where the power of Web3
and Virtual Reality is surpassing our
imaginations. Dentists will be able
to connect with their patients and
their peers from around the world
to provide better care through collaboration and infinite knowledge.
Web3 will be able to protect patient
data and ultimately bring transparency, accessibility, and affordability to the healthcare ecosystem.”
Dentaverse will soon have a presence in the Middle East with offices
scheduled to open this year. From
7 to 9 February, Dentaverse Ambassadors from all across the world will
present the project in a number of lectures, workshops and live experience
events. More information can be found

THIS IS MEDENTIKA: ONE SYSTEM. ONE WORKFLOW. ONE SUPPLIER.
 At Medentika, we understand the
challenges dental professionals face
in fulfilling the needs of patients.
Implantologists rely on Medentika implant technology. We research best-in-class implant designs
in order to combine strengths and
develop beyond the original. Implant
surface, thread design, connection
and shape are only a few of the key
elements in which we strive to be
superior.
Furthermore, integrated platform
switching shifts the transition between the implant and the abutment
further away from the bony tissue.
This keeps bacterial stimuli away
from the peri-implant tissue and supports a stable apposition of hard and
soft tissue.

With our Medentika implant systems, we cover all indication areas.
The Medentika Prosthetic System
is constantly shaping innovation in
dental prosthetics. New product development starts with our knowledge of hundreds of implant connections and our attention to detail.
We focus on improving and
simplifying digital and analogue
workflows to increase efficiency,
productivity and profitability. Thanks
to our engineering expertise, we
deliver premium, attractively priced
solutions dental professionals can
trust and be proud to recommend
to their patients. All Medentika products and components are made in
Germany to the highest standards
and specifications so that we can
offer up to lifetime guarantees.

CURASEPT—FIRST BECAUSE WE CARE
 Curasept is a well-known oral
care brand thanks largely to its patented chlorhexidine anti-discoloration
system (ADS) line, which is much
appreciated by dental professionals.
In contrast, little is known about the
company behind this innovation
and its other product lines. The company was founded in 2001 in Italy.
High-quality science, perseverance,
detailed analysis and attention to
the needs of its customers have been

staining: the Maillard reaction and
the protein denaturation process.
Moreover, the Curasept ADS line,
thanks to the absence of alcohol
and sodium lauryl sulphate, helps

the cornerstones of its development
and achievements over the past
20 years. The development of the
Curasept ADS line, which has achieved
a market share of 65% in Italy, is a
telling example of this.
Chlorhexidine is still considered
to be the most effective oral antiseptic. It is even defined as the gold
standard in this field. However, the
consequent development of dental
discoloration is a well-established
adverse side effect of chlorhexidine
and can lead to reduced patient
compliance.
The patented ADS system is
able to interfere with the two main
reactions that are responsible for

in vitro and in vivo studies. For
example, a study with 48 patients1
and a study with 70 patients2 showed
that gingival inflammation can be
controlled more effectively by constant use of Curasept ADS. In addition, a systematic review and meta-analysis3 on the efficacy of chlorhexidine mouthwash with and without ADS, presented at the EuroPerio9
congress, held in Amsterdam in the
Netherlands in 2018, concluded:
“The addition of ADS to [a chlorhexidine mouthwash] generally reduces
tooth surface discoloration and does
not appear to affect its properties
with respect to gingival inflammation and plaque scores. The recommendation emerging from this review is that with respect to plaque

DIGITAL SOLUTIONS FROM AMANN GIRRBACH LEAD THE WAY INTO THE DENTAL PRACTICE
 With its Ceramill Direct Restoration
Solution (DRS), Amann Girrbach has
extended its integrated digital workflow to the dentist and thus closed
the communication gap that existed
between the dental practice and
the laboratory. The new digital
workflow from Amann Girrbach has
been designed to enable interdisciplinary future-oriented collaboration
and streamlined production processes that enable same-day dentistry.
In this process, both partners
contribute their core competencies
in order to provide patients with
definitive and functional prostheses
in a more timely and less complicated
way. The delivery of smaller units is
possible on the same day, depending
on the local distance between the
two partners.
Depending on the type of collaboration that is desired, three team
workflows are available in combination with the corresponding Ceramill
DRS Kits. In each case, the central
basis of these workflows is AG.Live,
a new digital platform that provides
the infrastructure and patient case
management procedures to support
a level of consistency and efficiency
that was previously unattainable.
As such, AG.Live takes communica-

and this is possible on the same day
in cases of simple restorations. Such
timely delivery can lead to a better
dental experience for the patient
and could ultimately attract new patients to the practice and generate
more orders for the laboratory.
If the preferred material is zirconia, the High-Speed Zirconia Kit, consisting of Zolid DRS zirconia and a
corresponding Ceramill Therm DRS
sintering furnace, can optimally support the laboratory in fabricating
straightforward zirconia restorations
on the same day.

tion and collaboration between the
practice and the laboratory to an
entirely new level.
Virtual platform AG.Live creates
freedom, more efficient processes
and greater customer proximity
With AG.Live, Amann Girrbach
has started the largest digitisation
offensive in the company’s history.
This web-based portal for collaboration
between laboratories and dentists
offers comprehensive digital services
at all levels. For example, AG.Live is a
central tool for digital case management, networking, infrastructure, material management and support services. It is also a knowledge database

that will gradually replace the company’s previous C3 customer portal.
On the one hand, the platform
networks machines and materials in the
laboratory, thereby simplifying processes
and increasing quality and reproducibility. On the other hand, the greatest
advancement is that AG.Live connects the
growing global network of dental professionals who are operating digitally.
This bridges the interdisciplinary gap
between dentists and dental technicians
and facilitates future-oriented cooperation. Furthermore, within this network
of optimised and new partnerships, participants can focus on their strengths and
better position themselves on the market.

Extending the digital Ceramill CAD/
CAM workflow to the dentist
The Ceramill DRS Connection Kit
is the basic entry-level option, with
which dentists and laboratories can
already take full advantage of digitisation. It consists of a Ceramill Map
DRS intra-oral scanner, the associated scan software and the connection to AG.Live. Any order data, including all the required information,
can therefore be shared with the
laboratory seamlessly and in real
time via AG.Live. This eliminates the
need for handwritten job sheets and
conventional impressions. All that is
necessary is the physical delivery of
the restoration to the dental practice,

In an additional step—which can
provide patients with their prostheses even faster—the system in the
dental practice can be upgraded at
any time with the Ceramill DRS
Production Kit. This allows simple
restorations to be fabricated in the
practice and placed in the patient’s
mouth in a single session.
DRS users benefit from a comprehensive range of trainings and
services. For further information,

tooth colour and toothlike brilliance. Therefore, fillings made of
Composan LCM meet the highest
aesthetic requirements of both dentists and patients.

Also available in
a flowable version
Composan LCM flow is suitable
for indications like minimally invasive preparation, fillings of Class III
to V and extended fissure sealing.
Moreover, it is ideal for linings under composites owing to its easy
application and perfect adaption to
the cavity walls and tooth substance. Composan LCM flow levels
out irregularities of the cavity floor
and reinforces the bonding layer.
Owing to its elastic properties, the
material is also highly stress absorbing. Its low viscosity ensures good
wetting capability and highly aesthetic results.

After a retention time of 30
to 60 seconds in the oral cavity,
the material takes on an elastic
consistency, which facilitates removal without risking deformation.
The material cures completely
within a further 3 minutes and
can then be polished. This procedure is time-saving and thus highly
economical.

CLEAR ALIGNERS BY CLEARCORRECT
It is, therefore, a treatment often
motivated by patient demand. The
clear aligners provide the comfort
level of a removable appliance while
maintaining control over specific
tooth movements by means of toothcoloured attachments placed over
the teeth on which the aligners fit.
Aligners are being increasingly utilised in different kinds of complex
cases, and their efficiency in combination treatments, two-phase therapies or simple cases has previously
been documented.
Aligners are also beneficial for
patients who have had previous
orthodontic treatment and who want
to make minor corrections to their
smile.
 Clear aligners are an alternative
treatment to traditional fixed appliances (brackets and wires). They are
designed to correct malocclusion by
guiding teeth into their proper positions. Aligners work on the same
principle as fixed appliances: they
use a gradual force to control tooth
movement. The aligners are made of
a strong plastic material and are customised to fit an individual patient’s
teeth. Usually, a series of aligners is
needed and each aligner moves the
teeth in increments until the desired
movement has been achieved.

pliance of the patient and on his or
her dentition before there is a change
to the next set. The length of treatment with aligners depends upon
the severity of each case.

Aligners need to be worn for at
least 20 to 22 hours a day to achieve
the desired maximum effectiveness.
The wear schedule for each set of
aligners depends on the level of com-

Clear aligners have many advantages and are a great aesthetic
alternative for patients who want
a straighter smile but do not want
to wear traditional metal brackets.

There are several advantages to
using clear aligners:
Clear aligners are virtually invisible and designed around convenience.

They are removable; hence it is
easier to brush and floss after
meals.
They are easier to keep clean.
Clear aligners are comfortable
and less likely to irritate gingivae
and cheeks.
They can prevent tooth wear
caused by bruxism.
There are no dietary restrictions
associated with them.
They provide controlled singletooth movement.
There are remote monitoring options available.
The last point is especially relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Orthodontic patients need to return
to the clinic for their routine followup sessions, and this is becoming
increasingly difficult. With aligners,
owing to digital planning and advanced technology, the number of
visits is greatly reduced compared
with the number required for fixed
appliances, and in some simple

ClearCorrect is one such clear
aligner system used to straighten teeth
as an alternative to traditional fixed
appliances. ClearCorrect straightens
teeth using a series of clear custommade removable aligners that gradually move teeth a little at a time, eventually correcting the teeth and smile
for a new, revitalised look.

cases, repeat visits can be avoided
entirely. The lack of need for regular
physical appointments reduces chair
time and effectively reduces in-person
contact during the pandemic. Clinicians provide a series of aligners to
their patients to last for a defined
period before they return to the practice for evaluation and additional
aligners. Some clinicians deliver all
the aligners up front, and then they
follow treatment progress using virtual visits online or through the use
of a monitoring system.
ClearCorrect aligners have a
high trim line and therefore have
much better torque control. Aligners
also have much better controlled
movement when it comes to creating
space for implants as well as expansion. Since aligners are an integral
part of digital planning and workflow, they offer solutions for most
minor to major oral malocclusions
and movements such as levelling and
alignment, crossbite, edge-to-edge bite,
overjet, crowding, spacing, open bite,
midline shift and deep bite.
Movements such as rotations
and extrusion and those required for
the correction of large overjets have
been found difficult with clear aligners
but they are not impossible when
auxiliaries are used. 

THIS NOVEL MOUTHWASH PROTECTS YOUR PATIENTS IN THREE WAYS
 Curaprox’s Perio plus regenerate
belongs to a new generation of chlorhexidine-based mouthwashes that
employ a unique blend of additives.

It supports tissue regeneration, but
also prevents bacterial infection,
making it ideal for use after surgery
and for relieving treatment-related

dry mouth. Here are three ways
Perio plus regenerate protects your
patients’ health.

Stronger effect but fewer
side effects
Two key components of Perio
plus regenerate are chlorhexidine
and Citrox. Chlorhexidine digluconate (0.09%) has been the gold standard of oral antiseptics for decades.
Citrox is a novel organic antibacterial made from bioflavonoids and
is sourced from bitter oranges. It is
effective against bacteria, viruses
and fungi.
Studies have shown that the
combination of Citrox and chlorhexidine is more effective than using
chlorhexidine alone. Citrox in Perio
plus regenerate is combined with
polylysine amino acids to create
the Citrox/P formula, which offers
a long-lasting antibacterial effect.
Thanks to this unique blend of ingredients, it is possible to reduce the
amount of chlorhexidine used and
consequently its side effects.

An extra layer of protection
Hyaluronic acid is an important
part of the Perio plus regenerate
formula. Thanks to its water-binding
properties, it humidifies the oral
mucosa, supporting regrowth of cells.

22

AEEDC Dubai · 7–9 February 2023

It also protects the regenerating
mucosa by creating a protective biopolymer film over it. This acts against
dry mouth, reduces the risk of infection by viruses and bacteria, and
supports the formation of new mucosal cells.

Caries prevention
Xylitol not only contributes to
Perio plus regenerate’s pleasant
taste without spiking blood sugar
and insulin, but also helps keep
the teeth healthy and helps prevent caries. Oral bacteria such
as Streptococcus mutans cannot
metabolise xylitol, resulting in the
bacteria dying off.

Using Perio plus regenerate
The patient should rinse with
10 ml of Perio plus regenerate undiluted for 60 seconds, morning and
night, for up to one month. Patients
must be warned that Perio plus
regenerate is for oral application

only and must not be swallowed. It
should also be kept out of reach of
children. 

NINE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT 3SHAPE’S ULTIMATE TRIOS INTRA-ORAL SCANNER

Does TRIOS 5 also come
with 5 GHz bandwidth for
wireless connection?

 According to CEO Jakob Just-Bomholt,
3Shape has striven for perfection
throughout its five generations of
intra-oral scanners. Using state-ofthe-art scan software and artificial
intelligence to deliver sharper colours, improved accuracy and increased efficiency, the company has
recently released the TRIOS 5 scanner. This article aims to answer the
nine most pressing questions dental practitioners might have about
3Shape’s latest digital dentistry
solution.

Yes, TRIOS 5 is also using the
5 GHz band, which makes it possible for it to run over the normal
Wi-Fi in the clinics. The scanner has
undergone a radio emission test to
ensure that it does not interfere
with other radio devices.

What is the idea behind
the two-button design?

What is most eye-catching
about TRIOS 5?
The FDA-cleared device is hygienic by design. TRIOS 5 has a
completely closed autoclavable
scan tip, a sealed mirror and a
scratch-free sapphire glass window
as well as an ultra-thin, snug and
near-invisible sleeve that minimises
the risk of cross-contamination.
In addition, it is small, light and
allows for effortless scanning with
ScanAssist, an intelligent alignment
technology that ensures precision
and delivers reliable scanning results.

Will TRIOS 5 have a wired
option like TRIOS 4?
No, TRIOS 5 will only be available as a wireless option. However,
as it has three batteries and Smart
Power Management technology, a
wire is no longer needed. One
charge will provide up to 66 minutes of continuous scan time per
battery, which is a significant im-

provement compared with previous
versions.

What is Smart Power
Management?
It means that the scanner automatically switches to a low-power
mode when it is not used and
thereby saves energy. The benefit
of this is that every battery charge
lasts much longer. The scanner
can be reactivated by picking it up
(activating the gyro) or pressing one
of the buttons.

What is ScanAssist?
With the new ScanAssist engine,
3Shape brings effortless scanning
to a new level. ScanAssist ensures

that the 3D scan model that the
practitioner generates is continuously updated with the latest information. As a result, alignment of
the scan data will be close to perfect,
ensuring remarkably high-quality
scan results independent of the
user’s level of scanning experience.
Although 3Shape will keep promoting the 3Shape Scan Strategy,
ScanAssist provides the user with
greater freedom of scanning.

Will ScanAssist replace
AI Scan 2.0?
No. Technically and conceptually, AI Scan 2.0 is a component
completely different from ScanAssist.
AI Scan 2.0 includes functions to

distinguish teeth and surrounding
gingivae from not wanted surfaces,
whereas ScanAssist’s purpose is
to correct potential misalignments
while scanning.

What is TRIOS Share, and does
it come with all TRIOS models?
TRIOS Share is the first solution
that allows practitioners to use
wireless TRIOS scanners on any PC
in their practice via Wi-Fi. It gives
dentists real wireless freedom to
scan and plan anywhere. It only
works with wireless TRIOS models.
Users can choose between two
set-up options—scanning via screen
mirroring or via multiple TRIOS
scanning PCs.

The second button allows for
intuitive scanning by giving the
dental professional control over the
software from a distance. There is
no need to touch the screen because
the scanner is used as a remote
control, which leads to improved
hygiene. The feature gives the practitioner the possibility of going
through a full scanning workflow
without interruptions.

Is the tip size smaller than
the one for TRIOS 4?
According to dentists, the
height of the tip is often the problem in reaching rear molars. Therefore, this parameter has been improved without compromising the
field of view. The head of the tip is
shorter than that of TRIOS 4 and
TRIOS 3 and the tip is slightly
wider. 

of all, the test phase, which mobilised 70 practitioners over one year
in seven countries and resulted in
the placement of more than 700 implants, received extraordinary clinical feedback, and 100% of the panel
committed to adopting the solution
by 2022. The communication campaign was ambitious and highly
eventful, just as was the official
launch party.
Finally, Yanik Segginger, marketing director at Anthogyr, believes
that the marketing and distribution
phase will benefit from an unrivalled simultaneous release in the
Western European markets and will
continue until 2024, spreading from
Europe to the Middle East and South
East Asia, and finally to China, the
brand’s major market by volume in
2021. 

RUSSIA’S LARGEST MANUFACTURER OF DENTAL MATERIALS HELPS DENTISTS PROVIDE HEALTHY SMILES
 Only few companies can impress
with a high level of independence
in their production. Often, some
only develop ideas, others produce
raw materials and yet others fabricate the end product or specialise
in marketing. In this regard, the
Russian Vladmiva group is a unique
company. Founded as a laboratory
in 1992 in the Soviet Union, the
company follows a five-step production chain concept—covering development, production, implementation,
putting into operation and education—that stems from that time and
has been improved on over the past
30 years.

1


Today, Vladmiva is the largest
dental holding in Russia and produces a wide range of materials
and instruments for therapy, surgery, orthopaedics, endodontics,
orthodontics, periodontics and
prophylaxis. It consists of 25 innovative enterprises, including various laboratories, a diversified trading house, a network of dental
clinics, an educational centre, and
an experimental and development
department, which is the heart of
the holding.
The main feature of the enterprise, which allows it to develop

constantly and overcome external
crises, is an adaptive production
chain. It allows Vladmiva to replace
raw material quickly and continue
to provide the market with new
supplies. Dentists in 85 countries
use Vladmiva’s products.
Each year, Vladmiva shows a
significant increase in turnover, improves the quality of its products,
services and working conditions,
launches new production lines and
extends existing ones. In many
ways, this success can be attributed

to the company’s team of experienced scientists.
Vladmiva works in close collaboration with dental professionals.
In particular, the network of premium dental clinics associated with
the holding contributes extensively
to clinical investigations. Together
with practitioners, Vladmiva’s scientists improve dental materials for
clinical practice.
In addition, Vladmiva carries
out complete quality control at

every stage of production in order
to ensure compliance with international standards. The company
is certified to ISO 9001:2015 and
ISO 13485, and its products have
received the European CE mark and
clearance from the US Food and
Drug Administration.
Over the past 30 years, Vladmiva
has established itself as a worthy
heir of the Soviet science and a
responsible manufacturer whose
name is associated with high-quality
and reliable products that allow

dentists around the world to give
patients beautiful and healthy
smiles every day. Every year, the
company takes part in AEEDC Dubai,

THE CONCEPT OF IMMEDIACY IN IMPLANT DENTISTRY—WHY PICKING THE RIGHT PARTNER MATTERS
n Patients’ increasing demands for
shorter treatment times, the growing
evidence for predictable success1 and
the positive effects on productivity and
growth have made immediate treatment protocols a popular choice in
implant dentistry.

b elieves that a profound knowledge
about all important parameters and
selection criteria is half the battle when
it comes to immediate procedures.

VOCO RETRACTION PASTE—A MUST-HAVE FOR EVERY PRACTICE
 The basis for a perfect impression
is an exposed and dry sulcus. VOCO
Retraction Paste, which is applied
directly from the cap into the sulcus,
provides just that by effectively
opening the sulcus temporarily and
isolating it from moisture. This product is also the ideal complement to
the V-Posil precision impression material. VOCO Retraction Paste offers
the prerequisites for successful classic or digital precision impressions
as well as for cavity preparation for
Class II or V restorations, and it can
also be used for either permanent
or temporary cementing of restorations.
The retraction paste impresses
users not just with its results but
also with its handling. For example,
the shade contrasts well against the
gingiva, facilitating working in areas
difficult to see in particular. Owing to
the very slender and slightly flexible
cannula, the material can be easily
dosed and applied, and the paste is

easy to press out. In addition, it
scores points with its excellent
flow viscosity, coupled with
uniform stability, and this enables the opening of the sulcus.
During application, the aluminium chloride paste, which has
an astringent effect, temporarily fills the sulcus and stops
any bleeding, while eliminating
moisture.

VOCO. The SingleDose Cap is
compatible with commercially
available composite dispensers, such as the VOCO Caps
Dispenser, and is sufficient for
up to three sulci.
The main advantage of
SingleDose is that each patient
receives his or her very own
product—an easy way to avoid
the risk of cross-contamination
as well as other potential types
of contamination.

Numerous benefits
for patients
VOCO Retraction Paste only
requires a short exposure time.
It has a neutral taste and can
be easily and fully rinsed off.
The paste can be used as an alternative to, or in combination with,
a retraction thread. It can be used
either in the classic way or digitally
with an intra-oral scanner. Softtissue management is often the key
to success for Class II and V fillings as
well as for permanent or temporary

XP-ENDO RISE SEQUENCE: ONE BRANDED GLIDE PATH FILE, ONE SHAPING FILE, ONE STRAIGHTFORWARD PROCEDURE
 FKG introduces XP-endo Rise—the
innovative solution that is shaping
XP-endo’s evolution. Also new is a

glide path file 015/.04—XP-endo Rise
Glider, based on the RACE EVO design—
and an XP-endo Rise Shaper.

XP-endo Rise Shaper has a redesigned tip that delivers a proven increase in predictability and control.
Similarly to the current XP-endo
Shaper, the instrument adapts to the
canal’s natural anatomy, facilitates
debris removal, increases overall disinfection of the canal, shortens treatment time and offers superior resistance
to cyclic fatigue and superior flexibility
compared with other rotary files.
To simplify and facilitate treatments, FKG introduces a new XP-endo
Rise Sequence, combining XP-endo
Rise Glider and XP-endo Rise Shaper
in the same blister pack. This sequence of two files for glide path
and shaping ensures predictability,
a minimum 030/.04 preparation in
8/+3 strokes and a straightforward
procedure. In primary treatment, it

allows multiple use in up to eight
standard root canals.
For retreatment, FKG introduces
a new sequence XP-endo Rise Retreatment, combining D-Race DR1, XP-endo
Rise Shaper and Finisher R. This sequence simplifies retreatment, optimises removal of root filling material
and reduces procedure time.

Finisher and Finisher R:
New names, same safe,
efficient cleaning
FKG renames its solutions for
3D cleaning of the root canals. XP-endo
Finisher is now called Finisher, and
XP-endo Finisher R has been renamed
as Finisher R. The two instruments are
compatible with all shaping solutions,
FKG or non-FKG. No change has been
made to the files themselves.

Finisher and Finisher R are mechanical instruments for enhanced
the cleaning and disinfection of
canals. These instruments provide
excellent resistance to cyclic fatigue.
They leave walls cleaner than other
available systems. Added to the
treatment procedure, Finisher offers
up to 98% bacterial reduction in the
main canal space. In retreatment,
Finisher R is up to two times more
effective than passive ultrasonic
irrigation in reducing remaining root
filling materials. 

DISCOVER MORE ABOUT THE NEODENT ACQUA HYDROPHILIC SURFACE, THE NEXT LEVEL OF IMPLANT SURFACE TREATMENT
 Neodent is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Over time, millions of smiles
have been created in partnership
with dental professionals worldwide.
Throughout the years, Neodent continues to celebrate the choice of creating new smiles every day, changing
the lives of patients in more than
80 countries where the brand is present.
The Neodent Acqua surface is
an improvement of the successful
NeoPoros surface. Based on the abrasive sandblasting concept followed by
acid etching, the NeoPoros surface
promotes, by using controlled grain
oxides, cavities on the implant surface
that are then uniformed using the
acid etching technique. Through a
highly technological chemical process,
the NeoPoros surface becomes hydrophilic—the Neodent Acqua surface.

Neodent Acqua implants feature
this hydrophilic surface, which is
the evolution of the highly successful
sandblasted, large grit, acid-etched
type of implant surface designed for
high treatment predictability. It was

The hydrophilic surface presents
a smaller contact angle when in
contact with hydrophilic liquids.

STRAUMANN VIRTUO VIVO INTRA-ORAL SCANNER—REPLACE OUTDATED AND UNPLEASANT TRAY IMPRESSION METHODS
n State-of-the-art digital equipment
has become more and more accepted
in dental practices and is even requested by today’s patients. According to research conducted by the
Lincoln Financial Group, 55% of surveyed patients said advanced technology was very important to their
selection of a dental practice.

How does the Virtuo Vivo
help dental professionals
in daily practice?
The Virtuo Vivo offers an easy
entry into the world of intra-oral
scanning and replaces tedious phys
ical impression taking, which patients
dislike. The simple, self-explanatory
user interface is not overloaded with
information, is ideal for newcomers
and facilitates the implementation
of the Virtuo Vivo into daily work.
The small, light, ergonomically
designed, pen-like handpiece supports patient acceptance and comfort.

What does the independent
Institute of Digital Dentistry
say about Virtuo Vivo?
Dr Ahmad al-Hassiny, director of the
Institute of Digital dentistry, explains:

Implementation into
daily practice
“What it does well is offer one
of the few genuine plug-and-play
solutions available since the software is pre-installed and ready on
startup.

Investment costs
“At this price point, the Virtuo
Vivo is an entry-level scanner and
one of the most affordable intra-oral
scanners on the market.”
What about ongoing costs?
“An ongoing cost that you need
to consider is that of the scanning
heads. Virtuo Vivo has removable
and autoclavable scanning heads,
which provide ideal cross-infection
control.

This package is designed to
make it as simple as possible to get
started. When using the scanner,
I could achieve full-arch scans
within 60 seconds”

This feature has become the
norm across the entire intra-oral
scanner market.”

Scan quality
“One thing Vivo does very well
is the fabrication of colour scans.
The scans produced are some of the
most life-like and beautiful ones
I have seen.”

“The Vivo’s autoclavable scanning heads have a limit of 250 autoclave cycles and feel much more
durable than most available on
the market, as they are made of
metal.” 7

Handpiece size
“The Virtuo Vivo is one of the
most ergonomic scanners on the
market. It is also one of the most
comfortable scanners to use. The
construction of the Virtuo Vivo is
solid, and it is entirely made of
metal. It includes scanning heads.
This is unique and gives it a premium feel. It feels like a highquality product.”

digital shade-taking devices in the
field of aesthetic dentistry. Thanks
to its own R & D department, it
works to develop innovative 100%
“Made in France” solutions that
meet the challenges of current
dentistry. The company is committed
to integrating digital technology
into the world of dentistry and
is constantly innovating in this
direction. Notably, Borea has four
registered patents.

The aim of the Rayplicker
Cobra is to offer an objective, reliable
and reproducible colour analysis

After the release of its first dig
ital shade scanner, the Rayplicker
Handy, in 2018, Borea is now presenting its new spectrophotometer,
the Rayplicker Cobra.
The device is intended for
cosmetic dentistry professionals
and will revolutionise shade taking
as well as communication between the dental office and the
laboratory.

AEEDC Dubai · 7–9 February 2023

of teeth based on spectrophotometry,
a technology that has been validated and approved by the scientific community. The tooth shade is
analysed according to coordinates
L*a*b* or L*C*h. It is also indicated under different shade mappings: overall shade, three parts,
nine parts and detailed mapping.
This new version of the Rayplicker is
made in France and offers innovative ergonomic features. The device
is equipped with a miniaturised
measuring head, and the remote
LEDs at the end of the measuring
head allow easy access to all of the
patient’s teeth. The autoclavable
calibration tips allow the selfcalibration of the device and protect against cross-contamination.
In addition, its OLED screen guides
the user through colour taking and

the Wi-Fi transmission of the live
video on the computer screen. The
ease of communication makes the
experience with the patient truly
educational. The spectrophotometer,
along with the free Rayplicker
Vision software, allows the user to
carry out colorimetric and trans
lucency analysis of the tooth. The
software provides optimised patient
data management as well as numerous applications, such as the evalu
ation of bleaching treatments and
the editing of shade reports.
For the best transmission of
information, both dental practices
and dental laboratories benefit
from free access to the Borea Connect
platform, which is accessible from
a web browser. The platform is an
essential tool for the management

and real-time monitoring of orders
and ensures easy and fast sending
of the data necessary for the proper
production of the prosthesis. This
data includes shades, patient photos and digital impressions.
The new Rayplicker Cobra provides a complete and innovative
solution for communication between
the dental professional and the
laboratory. It allows a reduction of
the waste related to shade problems, and it brings real comfort and
time-saving while improving communication with patients. 7

city. Levels 124 and 125 offer a 360°

which make it possible to zoom in on
particular areas. Finally, Level 124 offers an exhilarating outdoor terrace,
whereas Level 125 serves as a tribute
to Arabic arts and culture.

Since Dubai is in close proximity to
the desert, visitors should not miss the
unique experience of going on a sanddune tour. While there are many different tours to choose from, the dune
buggy safari provides participants with
a 45-minute buggy drive or quad biking
experience, henna painting, traditional
costumes, Tanoura and belly dance shows,
as well as a barbecue dinner. The duration
is 6 hours, including transportation time.
The packages typically include a hotel
pickup and drop-off service, making it easy
for tourists to go on these sandy adventures.
