Congress to be held in Thailand”

elcome to FDI 2015
Bangkok, an event that
has generated a great
deal of excitement ever since its
launch in New Delhi last year.
The theme for this year’s event is
‘Dentistry in the 21st Century’ and
much of the vital equipment and
material is on display in this year’s
sold-out exhibition, which will offer 5,500 square metres net of the
latest in high-end technology and
cutting-edge products. This does
not come as a surprise. Current
market research places growth in
the Thai medical device market (including dental equipment, especially high-end) at an attractive
13.7 % per annum in the medium
term, to reach around US$ 2.3 billion by 2018.

products such as the 2nd edition of
FDI’s landmark Oral Health Atlas, due
for official launch during the congress.
We are delighted to announce a

This is the first ever FDI Annual
World Dental Congress to be held in
Thailand. I would like to thank our
partners, the Dental Association of
Thailand, for putting together such
an exceptional event. Cooperation
between FDI and the local team has
been, I’m told, in every way exemplary. I would like to congratulate the
local organising committee for lining
up such an impressive group of 17 national and 63 international speakers
from all continents of the world to
deliver a truly exceptional choice of
lectures.
I would also recommend you visit
the FDI pavilion, where you can gain a
special insight into the latest updates on ongoing activities and details of emerging areas of focus and
their corresponding projects. You will
also see a report on the 2015 edition
FDI World Dental Federation
serves as the principal representative body for more than one million
dentists worldwide, through approximately 200 national member associations and specialist groups in some
130 countries. The Annual World Dental Congress has been FDI’s flagship
event for well over 100 years, promoting international understanding and
exchange of knowledge and experience in dentistry, challenging preconceived ideas and widening perceptions.
During the congress, we will also
be highlighting some of major issues
facing dental practitioners, in particular, and health services in general.
One of these is improving access to
oral health care, within the context of
oral health as a fundamental right.
Another is oral health care for ageing
populations, which will be the subject of this year’s World Oral Health
Forum under the title ‘Challenges of
oral health care in an ageing society’.

Thailand itself is rapidly gathering a reputation for excellence in the
field of dentistry, attracting patients
from around the world and taking the
lead in areas such as access to oral
health care, caries prevention and
minimal intervention dentistry.
Moreover, the country has the particularity of having a ratio of 2:1 of female-to-male dental graduates entering the workforce.
I sincerely hope that congress
participants will have the opportunity to visit the natural and cultural
gems of Bangkok and Thailand during their stay. Among other things,

Situation in Bangkok secure despite attacks, FDI and TDA say

n 17 August, a pipe bomb exploded at the Ratchaprasong intersection in central
Bangkok close to the Erawan
Shrine, killing at least 20 people
and leaving more than 120 injured.
In view of the upcoming FDI Annual
World Dental Congress, which will
be held in the Thai capital from 22
to 25 September, the FDI World
Dental Federation has reacted immediately and sent a team to the
Thai capital in order to assess the
situation.
“We are happy to announce that
the Thai government has taken
swift and effective action and the
situation has returned to normal,”
the federation stated. The Dental
Association of Thailand, the local
partner of this year’s FDI AWDC,
commented on the bombings as
well: “Following recent events in
Bangkok, the Dental Association of
Thailand has been in contact with
the Government of Thailand. We
have received assurances that special security measures are now in
place and will remain so throughout
the period leading up to the FDI Annual World Dental Congress and beyond.”

where the bomb detonated are top

Thus, several tourists were among
the victims, mostly from South and
East Asia, although not all of the victims have been identified yet.

The bombing was one of the
worst attacks in the Thai capital in
years. Authorities are still searching for a suspect identified as the
potential bomber through surveillance footage and to date, it is still
unclear who might be responsible
for it and what the possible motives
are, according to the Thai Ministry
of Foreign Affairs. However, Thai authorities currently believe that the
goal of the attack was to affect Thailand’s tourism industry, as Defence
Minister Prawit Wongsuwan told
Reuters. The news agency reported
that authorities have stepped up
security checks at some major city
intersections and in tourist areas.
Following the attack, the
Bangkok police reported a further
small explosion. A bomb was
thrown into the Chao Phraya river
beneath the Taksin bridge, under
which passenger ferries pass. However, nobody was hurt. The police
suspect that the two attacks might

explosion occurred minutes after
the man left the shrine, making him

Two days after the bombing, the
Erawan Shrine was reopened to visitors, as the surroundings and the
shrine itself have already been
largely restored.
Several foreign offices, including in the UK and Germany, have updated their safety information for
travellers going to Thailand. They
urge visitors to take extra care and
monitor travel alerts and news reports. According to them, further attacks—especially in tourist regions—cannot be ruled out.

FDI schedules two sessions
of its landmark World Oral Health Forum
Meetings to focus on sugar reduction and Universal Health Coverage

DI introduced its innovative
landmark World Oral Health
Forum for the first time at the
2012 Annual World Dental Congress in Hong Kong. Since then, the
objective has been to guarantee
top-level panellists and subjects at
the cutting edge of public policy in
the field of oral health and related
issues. This year is no exception,
with two sessions scheduled for
the upcoming AWDC in Bangkok.
Session 1 will focus on sugar as
a significant risk factor for dental
caries and other NCDs in the light
of the recently-published World
Health Organisation (WHO) Guideline on Sugar Intake for Adults and
Children, recommends a reduction
in daily intake of free sugars to less
than 10 % of their total energy intake.
It also advises that a further reduction to below 5 % or roughly
25 grams (six teaspoons) per day
would provide additional health
benefits.
The session will be moderated
by Dr HS Selikowitz, Vice Chair of
the FDI Science Committee, with
panellists Dr Chizuru Nishida, Coordinator, Nutrition Policy and Scientific Advice Unit, Department of Nutrition for Health and Development,
WHO; Prof. Paula Moynihan, Professor of Nutrition and Oral Health
and Director of the Centre for Oral
Health Research at Newcastle University UK and Director of its WHO
Collaborating Centre for Nutrition
and Oral Health; Dr Rob Beaglehole, Principal Dental Officer and
Senior Dentist for the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board

Health Forum where she leads on
NCDs and global health policy.
Session 2 of the World Oral
Health Forum 2015 is entitled ‘Universal Health Coverage (UHC); towards optimal oral health’. It will
highlight efforts made by emerging
economies and low and middle income countries to achieve UHC and
a roadmap which could be used to
integrate oral health into UHC
within the context of the post-2015
development agenda.

Prof. Michael Glick, Professor, Oral
Medicine and Dean, School of Dental Medicine, University of New York
at Buffalo, USA, who will address
the Forum on What do we mean by

Asia’s first dental museum opens in Bangkok
Permanent exhibition at Mahidol University aims to help improving understanding of the importance of good dental health
W
ith the newly opened
Sirindhorn Dental Museum, the Faculty of Dentistry at Mahidol University in
Bangkok has introduced the first
dental museum of its kind in Asia.
By highlighting the history of dentistry and oral hygiene across Asia
through fun and interactive exhibits, the museum hopes to raise
awareness in the country about the
importance of proper oral care.
The 620 square metres museum, which is sponsored by the
royal family, features five main exhibits, each aimed at improving understanding of the importance of
good dental health.
“We want to ensure that Thais
will have a healthy smile in our
‘Land of Smiles’ for as long as possible,” Dr Phira Sithiamnuai, assistant professor and Deputy Dean for

A highlight for children is the giant
model of a mouth. Assisted by the
staff, visitors are encouraged to practise their toothbrushing skills on the

State-of-the-art dental milling technology on display in Bangkok

DG Australia recently announced the introduction of its new
wet milling dental machine. The
DWX-4W and other new developments in Roland dental milling
technology will be on display at key
dental conferences worldwide, including FDI 2015, the company announced.
The recent introduction of
CAD/CAM software, CNC milling
machines and new restorative materials, has revolutionised the production of dental prostheses, including crowns, copings and
bridges. One of the most popular
restorative materials is lithium disilicate that is gaining support from
the functionality of dry milling and
wet milling into a single machine,”
he continues, “While these machines can process a variety of dental CAD/CAM materials, they require a cleaning process when
switching between wet and dry
milling. This includes the disposal
of milling residue, then cleaning the
inside of the machine and drying
out the processing area.”
Roland DG’s multiple device solution of either dry or wet milling can
handle the simultaneous processing of different materials without
the inconvenience and delay of
cleaning.
“Each machine specialises in either wet milling such as the DWX4W or dry milling such as the DWX50 and the smaller DWX-4. Furthermore, having separate machines
provides the opportunity to add an
additional unit to meet production
demands, with the ability to run four
units off the one PC,” Adams said.
